So the current (4th) and previous (3rd) generations (2018 to present) of the MacBook Air have only Thunderbolt 3 Ports (which is a type of USB C port). Gen 2 is split up so its a bit of a complication.

Do double check what generation of Macbook you have, but I'm going to assume you have a gen 3 or gen 4 in which case you want a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI cable.

I won't vouch for this cable as I've never used it before. It was just the first result off Amazon. I'd shop around but this is generally what you're looking for.

It might, but if it does work it's not advisable to use.

As it would be the equivalent of a third-party dock.

They make HDMI to UBS-C cables you could use.

So all you have is USB-C ports there.. so you'd need whatever USB-C adapter helps you connect whatever monitor you have (DVI, HDMI, etc).

I've used:

  • UNI USB-C to HDMI cable: https://www.amazon.com/uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Surface/dp/B075V5JK36/

But there are a variety of other Adapters or Hubs (such as from Anker) that all work great too.

I have a Samsung TV and use something like this. Find a cable compatible with your phone.

Save the network bandwidth and use the cable. Connection doesn't drop as much either.

Another option depending on where your computer is, is to use SideQuest to stream the quest to the TV - Computer to TV via HDMI, SideQuest wireless Scappy

Good Luck!!!

Yes, I do see the lightening bolt. Does that mean I can use it? I was thinking of getting this one since its one cable (vs buying HDMI cable and buying adapter):

There has been a problem with the 2018 Mac Mini's HDMI support from the introduction. There have been many HDMI firmware updates that have helped for some. Why are you using two adapters for the same display? There's no need to convert from HDMI to display port before connecting to your MacBook. Just use either an adapter such as along with an HDMI cable, or use an HDMI to Thunderbolt 3 cable such as.

I had this same exact issue but was also having issues with the resolution. For the past few days I have been trying different USB-C adapters and HDMI cables on mine and I just finally got my three devices working right: desktop with GeForce 960 (yes I plan to upgrade this soon but it has HDMI 2.0 at least for now), MacBook Pro 13 inch (2018), and a Latitude 5400 with USB-C.

In the end the only cables that worked for me were:

-Desktop connected via HDMI and running at 5120x1400 60 Hz and HDR — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084RFQPSP/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_BYKgFbRZGXD22

-MacBook Pro connected via USB-C to DisplayPort cable running at 5120x1400 120 Hz (not scaled with Big Sur beta) and HDR — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XTYKLNJ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_vXKgFbVGWJG2V

-Latitude 5400 via same USB-C to DisplayPort cable running at 5120x1400 60 Hz and HDR — Same USB-C to DisplayPort cable

Edits:

These adapters never let me get above 3480x1440 and did not work with HDR

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075V5JK36/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_O7KgFb3VPS7NH

I also upgraded my firmware to v1004 and panicked when it wouldn’t turn back on or light up the power LED after. I think it was an issue with having cables plugged into it still. It didn’t come back to life until I unplugged everything from it and let sit for a few seconds before reconnecting.

At $300 you can choose among many 4K 27 inch monitors and even have some money left for a good shielded cable , a laptop stand and lunch or beer. I personally like this Philips model, but seriously choose a 4K IPS and your eyes will thank you for many years to come. Having a retina display side by side against a 92 ppi HD 24 inch monitor is jarring and a pain.

Thanks for the details. And don't worry about any holes in the information. Each piece of data just pushes a little one way or the other.

I think you're incredibly lucky that the district's I.T. department will officially support the device like that. I'd recommend asking for some input from them to see if they say something like, "Oh, we are terrible at supporting X, but we can make Y do Z, so you should get that." If they're officially backing you up, take advantage of that! I.T. gets the reputation of being the Department of No, but in reality we usually enjoy making people happy. We just get grumpy when someone assumes that their time is more important than the time of the person we're already helping. (It's as if they're barging in on someone else's doctor's appointment to ask about their problem. "Rude" doesn't cover it.) So I guess that is my long-winded way of saying that their input may influence you in ways even I can't predict.

As to my own thoughts, of the three devices you indicated, I see some pros and cons to each. The Samsung device will run Android. That means it will integrate really effectively with the Google / G Suite products. Much better than the others, I think. Google Classroom's Android app will allow you to write on assignments that are handed in. It's pretty cool, actually. However, it will probably not get software updates as often or for as many years as the iPad. That is probably the best thing about iPads. We have a number of them (and Macs) at my district. They last a surprisingly long time. And most Google apps for the Samsung tablet would work on the iPad, just a little less impressively sometimes.

I don't know much about Surface products. My understanding (limited as it is) is that they'd be about as well supported as any PC running Windows. It will probably have the worst chance of working wirelessly with your projector, but I'm only guessing. The iPad could work with your projector if you buy an AppleTV and connect it to an HDMI port. Then the iPad and AppleTV could make what is called an "ad hock network" to do streaming. Check with your I.T. department first. It may cause problems for other teachers, since it consumes some of the limited radio frequencies that your wifi system uses. To oversimplify things, its like causing a "traffic jam" that slows down wifi for neighboring classrooms. There are ways to prevent this, but not every school has the right equipment for that.

I don't know if this device is a good fit for you, but have you considered the Lenovo Duet Chromebook? I bought the 64GB model for $250 recently and have been pleasantly surprised. It came with a kickstand, keyboard, and charger. When put together, it weighs about 2 pounds and feels like carrying a high quality journal. When the magnetically attached parts are removed, it feels like a 1 pound iPad. It has a robust web browser (better than the iPad's in my personal opinion) and can run Android apps (giving it some advantages of the Samsung device you're considering.) Unlike most Android tablets, it is scheduled for software updates for about 8 years. So it has that iPad longevity. It isn't as mature of a product as the iPad, but I've been pleased with it so far. It works decently with the Meko stylus, but that isn't as good as the Apple Pencil. Its integration with Google services is better than all of the devices you mentioned. For connecting to a projector, you could use a USB-C to HDMI cable (example) or a chromecast (if IT will allow it). I recommend the cable, personally. It would be more reliable.

In the end, my personal choice would probably be a tie between the Duet and iPad. The Duet is a very low cost and better if you want to type. The iPad is better if you want to use handwriting more than typing and don't mind spending a lot more money. ($250 total package vs. $800) That assumes you have no person preference (maybe you really want to use an iPad-only app?) and your I.T. department can support either to the same degree.

One last comment: I think u/tacotrap gave some great advice, too. :)

Remote work. If you're using remote desktop etc, the network connection is the limiting factor.

...

Chrome. Known to be slower and use more battery and ram vs Edge.

Either way, use a good ad-blocker like Ublock Origin.

..

Google Apps. Unless work is on Google Apps, the majority of the entire working world is running on Office. Office Online is free and a good alternative. Completely eliminates incompatibility issues often seen with Google Apps users trying to work with Office workers.

...

Home movie. Windows Videos can do that easily.

...

8gb - Open Task manager on the pc you're now using with all the apps you usual run open. Ram section will sum up how much physical ram you use. Buy based on that.

Most light to moderate multitasking home users have no issues with 8gb.

...

Ssd in SL can be upgraded easily/cheaply. https://www.onmsft.com/feature/how-to-upgrade-the-ssd-in-the-surface-laptop-3-or-surface-pro-x

...

Ssd usage. Right click your Documents, Photos, Videos folders to find out how much room they all take. Buy or upgrade based on that and how many gb in photos you take per year.

Many users put it on an external flash or hard drive for cheap backup and storage.

You're not buying a Pro, so no microsd card slot (in which case, $50 for 512gb), so it's either a small usb flash drive, external sdd drive, or hard drive for backups.

...

Hook up monitor. Depends on port. Buy a usb-c to whatever it supports.

If it's a usb-c monitor, usb-c to usb-c cable. If it's hdmi,https://www.amazon.com/uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Surface/dp/B075V5JK36 Etc.

Hdmi also lets you connect to any hdtv at home, projector at work, etc easily since it's more common.

Also, because 4k 43" hdtv are under $200 at Wal-Mart, the easiest, cheapest way to get huge desktop space and high res. Vs mute expensive pc monitors. (No idea why - same Chinese lcd makers make both in their factories...)

Attach an antenna and watch the games, too.

I just got the "uni" cable too ([this product](https://www.amazon.com/uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Surface/dp/B075V5JK36/ref=sr_1_5?pldnSite=1)) and I am still getting only 30Hz with my Sony X950G 4K TV, coming out of my MacBook Pro 13" (2020, 4-Thunderbolt). Tried it on two different HDMI ports and two different USB-C /Thunderbolt ports on my laptop and no dice :(

Any idea how I can narrow down the problem further? Is hte cable defective or my TV at fault?

Previously I was using a USB-C hub with a regular HDMI cable hooked up to it and that was giving me 30Hz only too, hence my attempt at the Uni, but would be unfortunate if the uni isn't going to work either.

Thanks so much!

**EDIT:** SOLVED! I had to turn on "Enhanced format" in my sony tv's External Input settings https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00141961

I use my current Galaxy S9 and cast it to a TV; both are on my wireless network. My network really didn't reach my garage so I got $15 extender, and it works perfectly.

I also picked up a USB-C to HDMI cord that goes from the phone to the TV that makes it easier than casting. it reduces the lag to nearly zero, low enough that I don't notice it and it's fine as long as I ride less than 1.5 hours. If I am riding longer than that, I need to charge the phone cuz the battery will drain too far. In that scenario, I cast it and have the phone plugged into a portable battery that has a little carry bag slung from my handlebars.

I also tried to use the cord and have the phone sit on a wireless charger, but the charging was intermittent and I really didn't see too much of a benefit there, so I nixed that process.

YMMV, but even a cheap 32" TV and your phone and you're ready to go. I don't know what your budget is like, but Target has good deals on 32" TVs for less than $100. I picked up an old model 55" TV last black friday for about $125 and it's perfect for Zwift and football in the garage.

This is what I did.

First, two of these monitors: HP 23.8-inch FHD IPS Monitor with Tilt/Height Adjustment (VH240a, Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072M34RQC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ai.dEbQXNWFKB. Each is about $100, more or less the cheapest monitor you can get, but is 1080p and I think they look great.

Next, you need two of these cables: USB C to HDMI Cable 6ft (4K@60Hz), uni Slim Aluminum USB Type C to HDMI Braided Cable [Thunderbolt 3 Compatible] for MacBook Pro 2019, MacBook Air/iPad Pro 2019, Surface Book 2, Samsung S10, and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075V5JK36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mj.dEb13Q09FQ.

If you have enough room on your desk for the two monitor stands individually, you’re done. If not, you need a vesa mount. Here is one: VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand Heavy Duty Fully Adjustable fits 2 /Two Screens up to 27" (STAND-V002) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009S750LA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yk.dEbNCEFX8A and here is another: VIVO Dual LED LCD Monitor Free-Standing Desk Stand for 2 Screens up to 27 inches | Heavy-Duty Fully Adjustable Arms with Max VESA 100x100mm (STAND-V002F) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C5H5DN0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2k.dEbKY4RQZR.

The difference between the two stands is one claps onto the back of your desk, one just sits on top.

EDIT: just realized you only have two ports. if you want to charge your laptop while you use it (which you should) you should get this: USB C to Dual HDMI Adapter 4K @60hz,Type C to HDMI Converter for MacBook/MacBook Pro 2019/2018,MacBook Air,Chromebook Pixel,LenovoYoga 720/730,Dell XPS 13,Surface Book 2,Samsung Galaxy, etc-Grey https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QKVY23Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_dn.dEbT7VXEVT and then just get two regular hdmi cables, each of which is like $7.

So I am trying on an LG 27GN950.

I've tried:

Startech DisplayPort to USB-C (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-USB-DisplayPort-Cable-CDP2DPMM1MB/dp/B01E9RTEI8) which only gives me 60hz at any resolution. I use the same cable on my Dell S2719dgf and get 2560x1440p (monitor's max resolution) at 144hz. If I tell my LG it's a DP 1.4 cable, it gives me the option of HDR. If I tell the monitor it's 1.2, I lose the HDR option.

Curiously enough I just realized it's a DisplayPort 1.2 cable. I will order and try: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=displayport+usb+c+1.4&qid=1603084003&s=electronics&sr=1-3

I also tried HDMI to USB-C (https://www.amazon.com/uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Surface/dp/B075V5JK36/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?cv_ct_cx=hdmi+usb-c&dchild=1&keywords=hdmi+usb-c&pd_rd_i=B075V5JK36&pd_rd_r=655478a2-e9e9-4e44-9cd6-c6d59c5865ef&pd_rd_w=XKb3r&pd_rd_wg=JqnQQ&pf_rd_p=aa27be45-7294-48a8-8c11-546cebd55a37&pf_rd_r=DCXYBKK2RC00TKJARZ70&psc=1&qid=1603084564&sr=1-1-a14f3e51-9e3d-4cb5-bc68-d89d95c82244). Once again, my Dell accepted this and output 144hz at 1440p. The LG does not.

I have a feeling the LG monitor might not support, natively, a higher refresh rate on macOS. It's odd the Dell has accepted multiple cables without issue, but the LG won't. Even lowering the resolution doesn't help or give the option of higher refresh rate.

HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color is never an available option for me, and turning off adaptive sync doesn't help either.

Will report back when I try the 1.4 DP to USB-C, but I have a feeling it won't work :(

>"A USB-C port may or may not support alternative modes, like: * Displayport Alternate Mode * Mobile High Definition Alternate Mode * Thunderbolt Alternate Mode * HDMI Alternate Mode (Other modes, including Ethernet Alternate Mode, are currently being discussed)"

I assume by "just USB" you mean you've checked that it doesn't support Alternate Mode. I'm sorry to hear that, but let's see if we can't find a workaround that doesn't require swapping cables all the time.

I'll also assume that both of the new monitors you buy will have at least two inputs, DP and/or HDMI, and that you're not looking for >60hz.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019): Thunderbolt 3 -> DP/HDMI

"One device to rule them all"

  • $66 dock that I'd consider, because it can do multiple extended monitors, while sharing its thunderbolt ports for Ethernet, charging, etc.

or

or

(you'll need separate dp2dp or hdmi2hdmi cables, in case you don't already have any)

Adapter-free method:

(you'll need one for each display)

NUC:

(requires mDP 1.2 or better, for MST; I know nothing about what this NUC, or your monitors support so that's on you)
