What about a regular Chromecast + an HDMI audio extractor? It's a bit pricier than the old Chromecast Audio was, but it should work, and you get the option of optical or line-out.

Hello everyone, this is my first ever reddit post and wanted to share with you all my experience so far with the Xbox series X launch console and my Astro A40s TR with Mixamp. My Series X did not work for Game volume on my astros when only having the USB connected, I could only hear voice chat/friends. To combat this I ordered a HDMI sound converter from amazon for $25 because the Astro HDMI Adapters were sold out on their website. The HDMI sound converter from Amazon arrived a few minutes ago, to good news for other Astro/Xbox Series X users. This hdmi sound converter I ordered, works like a charm and the sound quality on my Astro A40s are great! I plugged in the provided HDMI 2.1 cable to the sound converter and the Xbox where it is most important since the sound is going to the astros and not my monitor. I really recommend you try this before giving up on your astros or wasting money on a new headset, I want to do my part for the Astro/Xbox community as well as the PlayStation community to help you all find a solution to the Optical sound port not being on the new gen consoles. I have provided the link for the hdmi sound converter from amazon and let me know if this works for you all as well!
Best regards -Ace

What you want is apparently called an "HDMI audio extractor".
Here's an example of a low end generic one https://www.amazon.com/avedio-links-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B07H94D77V

I have the same problem, im gonna try this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-T2xFbNGAZC07

I would try something like this and speakers/headphones if you don't want to rely on the controller.

I use this to split the audio off of the hdmi signal and then use the optical adapter the beam came with. Works great and a super cheap solution, especially if you just have a really basic computer like mine (also probably most computers) that doesn’t have optical out.

So I bought this to resolve my issues with lag. I ran the HDMI connection from Arch on my TV and connected to the HDMI Out on the adapter. Then I ran the optical from the playbase to the optical out on the adapter. Virtual no lag now. Always synced

I am unfortunately using a third part adapter because the Astro one was out of stock. I’m using this one:
https://www.amazon.com/avedio-links-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=HDMI+Audio+Extractor&qid=1606657091&sr=8-4
The sound has worked fine in a couple of days. It takes a couple of minutes to connect once you start the PS5, but now it won’t take up the ps audio at all.

I have an LG 1080p 144Hz 1ms FreeSync monitor and 2nd Gen A50s. Bought this for $29 Amazon and it works like a charm. I haven't really tried to see if it has 5.1 surround sound because I just wanted to make sure I have at least game audio because I was only able to get party chat to work.

Here is the HDMI splitter I’m using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_x-buFb2HBVFF2
I’m using the Bose Companion 2 Series 3 speakers
The speaker does not have any other input and it is an audio cable. Not sure what type but I’ll post a picture of it. This cable goes from my audio splitter to my Bose speakers. The Xbox only has an HDMI and no Audio output.
The monitor has no sound and no speakers. It doesn’t have an Audio port.

Dunno why someone downvoted you. That’s actually something you can do. Either plug the sound system into the device directly, or get an HDMI splitter with separate audio output and plug it into that.
Like this: avedio links 4K HDMI Audio Extractor, HDMI to HDMI + Optical Toslink SPDIF + 3.5mm AUX Stereo Audio Out, HDMI Audio Converter Adapter Splitter Support 4K@60Hz HDCP1.4 Full HD 1080P 3D https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JogxFbB6Y1DAS
I wouldn’t actually use that one, but as an example.

You need something like this to split audio out to optical for the surround sound and video to projector.
1 points • Flashbang1
I just used this one and while it can support 4K/60Hz, it doesn’t support HDR. I highly doubt any of these generic adapters will work with 120hz unfortunately...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H94D77V?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Just ordered the Astro adapter and they said it should support HDR. We shall see. Sucks about the 120hz because my one monitor won’t be compatible.... (I have a 4K/60Hz and a 1440p/144Hz).
1 points • vettelover
You can use an HDMI to optical adapter. Something like this.
1 points • Goodwill_Gamer
The OneS has a dedicated S/PDIF (aka Toslink) digital audio out port so you could just use that.
But the easiest solution is probably an HDMI audio extractor
1 points • achmejedidad
I use this. works great unless the xbox is set to power saving mode.

I used this to split a hdmi Audio on a few roku to get a optical out to hook into a Bose system
avedio links 4K HDMI Audio Extractor, HDMI to HDMI + Optical Toslink SPDIF + 3.5mm AUX Stereo Audio Out, HDMI Audio Converter Adapter Splitter Support 4K@60Hz HDCP1.4 Full HD 1080P 3D https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_d1iQFb2V97ENP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
On the ps4 you could use a optical cable - then go into the system setting and set the audio priority or optical and only video would go thru the hdmi I believe . I used this for a while as well before I got a roku (easier for kids to just use 1 small remote for tv when I got YouTube tv and dropped cable)

The vast majority of Series S buyers will be using it with a TV, not a monitor. And the vast majority of people don't even use optical for audio.
If you're one of the few that do use optical (like me), you need to either have a display with an optical port, or buy an optical audio HDMI extractor like this one: https://www.amazon.com/avedio-links-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B07H94D77V

You could get something like this https://www.amazon.com/avedio-links-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=USB+to+Optical+Audio+Adapter&qid=1606481115&sr=8-3#

I’m guessing there isn’t a work around using some kind of adapter, like so (or other), that we can use as a workaround?
I understand in the example I sent, that it is only 4k@60Hz; but if the headphones at least sound good, an alternative could maybe work until a solution by Astro or an alternative headset is bought.

Could it be possible buying this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H94D77V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_NF-SFb2EV8F0G

I am looking at this one currently.
Thank you so much btw! :D

Looks like you need a splitter. Like this one: https://smile.amazon.com/avedio-links-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B07H94D77V/
That's just the first one that came up for me. Do some more digging.
1 points • eat_a_burrito
My gut says you need one of these. It is an HDMI audio extractor to create Toslink.

I bought this to compensate for lack of an optical audio port.... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H94D77V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just understand that toslink (aka SPDIF) is only capable of 5.1 sound. The latest HDMI codec (2.1 IIRC) is the only connection that supports Dolby Atmos 11.2.
1 points • LeftFaceDown
If I'm understanding you correctly, you'll need an HDMI audio-extractor. There are a number of them on Amazon. Like the below:
Then just plug your headphones/powered speakers into the 3.5mm out.
1 points • TotallyLegitAcc
Or you can even use an HDMI splitter to do this: https://www.amazon.com/avedio-links-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B07H94D77V

If you have a bunch of HDMI connections/cables in a small space, note that you can get HDMI cables that are very small. Short (a few inches) and also very thin (4mm) Those are the kind I use in tight spaces, etc.
Example: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014ROO14U
If you need to extract analog audio from HDMI, then your only practical choice is one of the inexpensive HDMI audio extractor gadgets which all require two HDMI cables (one into the extractor and one out of it).
