Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, so I'll just say:

GET A SCREEN PROTECTOR. This one specifically:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_jZbVFb4NN5T7F

With a 6 year old there will be drops. This will save you from a broken screen. There are a bunch of other great cases and accessories that can protect or enhance your experience, but that's the only 100% necessary thing.

Nah it peels off in one piece clean. Do Vinyl wraps. You should have a screen protector tho. They dont reduce touch screen traction by much at all. I love these and they’re a two pack for $8

Awesome, thanks for the subreddit recommendation!

This isn’t related but I have another question. I just ordered an amFilm tempered glass screen protector for my Switch because I read the plastic screen scratches easily. It has literally tens of thousands of 5 star reviews and many recommendations on YouTube so I guess it’s a good brand?

Anywho, I’ve recently been reading online about the console heating up when in “dock-mode” which causes the adhesive on the screen protector to melt. Usually from intense games like BotW (which I can’t wait to play!) However, most of these posts were dated mid 2017 to early 2018.

Is this still an issue? Do you recommend I hold off on playing the Switch in docked mode for 24-48 hrs to let the adhesive “settle down”/“cure” on my Switch so it is less likely to melt from the higher heat temps while the Switch is docked?

Sorry for the follow-up question. You just seem very knowledgeable so I thought I would ask. If you have any comments about the screen protector itself, feel free to add that in. Not knowing anything about this ^ is OK too :)

1) Whichever fits your needs better - it seems from another comment like the large Switch fits better.

2) No. The benefits of online are the ability to play online multiplayer in games that have it, cloudsaves for certain games, and the ability to play a few NSO-exclusive games, like NES and SNES games, and Tetris 100. The downside is that you're continuing to support and encourage the current industry trend of nickel-and-diming customers for integral parts of games, on top of the $60 initial price tag.

3) Definitely get a screen protector. This is a good one. Also consider a travel case of a size that fits your needs.

I got this one shortly after the March switch release and have fully enjoyed this one. Cheap, easy to install, no scratches, and came with an extra (which I recently used on my partners new switch)

Be sure to pick up a screen protector. The dock can scratch the screen. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_k.W4Fb9Q94TD8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

$14.99 is steep for a screen protector

Here’s a two pack of tempered glass screen protectors for $8.99 lol. $14.99 is too high for a screen protector.

AmFilm’s Screen protector is pretty incredible, I always mattify my electronic screens so I’ve had my fair share of good and bad. This one doesn’t distort colors or produce noticeable grain (unless I guess u look at the screen 1mm away lol). It’s also really good for night time use, since I play in the dark a lot

Oof that looks unplayable, Godspeed. Not sure what your situation is or where you’re located but here is a 2 pack that’s great quality (I’ve had one on our switch for 2 years) on Amazon for 8 bucks.

The dock doesn't actually scratch your screen unless it's warped or you're sliding it in at a weird angle every time. But I would concur with the idea that being inside doesn't stop you from accidentally dropping it. Buy one anyways.

And they're all pretty cheap. These are the ones I used.

I agree on the screen protector. I have this one and it’s very easy to put on. In addition, any carrying case from Target or something should be fine. Finally, if you’re financially stable, get yourself a Pro Controller.

it has an update but I don't think its more thin 1GB but with how bad the switches wifi is id get that downloading.

Here are some accessorys you may want:

Plugable USB to Ethernet Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AQM8586 will speed up updates/game downloads useful if your switch dock is somewhere u can get a internet wire.

Glass Screenprotector will help protect the screen from kiddos since the switch screen is plastic it can be scratched ez. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV

I also recommend you get a carrying case with a hard shell not one of the fabric ones

As a minimum of extra storage I will suggest to go buy a SanDisk Ultra 128gb microsd, it should be $20 - https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-128GB-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B073JYC4XM

For safety get one of those glass screen protectors, not sure which is the best one but first google search was this one: https://www.amazon.com/amFilm-Tempered-Screen-Protector-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01N3ASPNV

Get an Official Pro Controller(Costco should have it I assume) or if you don't want to spent much get one of those cheap wired $20 PowerA Pro Controllers elsewhere.

>Do I just buy the console? He probably won't be able to get in and out of bed easily, so would it be helpful to buy an extra battery pack or anything like that, in case he doesn't have an outlet near his hospital bed?

The current iteration of the Nintendo Switch has hardware optimizations that mean longer battery life per charge compared to the original, launch version of the console. Depending on the game, he can expect to get anywhere from 3 to 9 hours playtime per charge. If you'd like to spend the extra money for convenience, a battery pack like this one can extend the battery life significantly: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-13400-Nintendo-Switch-Edition/dp/B07DMFL3SJ

>Is there a way to do that with digital games and have them tied to an account for him? Or is there a way to get him a Nintendo gift card and let him pick out his own games?

Yes. You can't pre-buy the games because his Nintendo Switch account will need to log into a console before you can buy games from using the Nintendo Eshop, but you can buy prepaid Eshop gift cards at any major retailer (here's a link for Amazon, but Best Buy, Target, Walmart etc will also carry them if you want to get physical cards). That way he can pick out whichever games tickle his fancy.

Also a good idea to get a tempered glass screen protector like this one: https://www.amazon.com/amFilm-Tempered-Screen-Protector-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01N3ASPNV

I'm not great with game recommendations so I'll leave that to others. Hope his surgery goes well and he has a speedy recovery, this is an incredible gesture so I'd say he's very lucky to have you as a sibling!

I use a tempered glass screen protector. Also, I’ve read online that the Switch can get scratched from putting it in the dock. So from day 1, I slapped on a decal skin I bought on Amazon. I also bought a little carrying case on Amazon.

Okay, first off, there are two different types of Nintendo Switch right now - there's the regular Nintendo Switch, and there's the Switch Lite. The Switch Lite is just a handheld, like a more modern Game Boy. The regular Switch, on the other hand, is what people are calling a "hybrid" system, because it is, as you say, a handheld that also connects to your TV.

To do this, the Switch uses what's called a "dock" (that black rectangle-shaped piece of plastic that comes with it). You connect the dock to your TV, and whenever you want to play on your big screen, just slide the Switch into the dock and presto, you're playing a videogame console. Again, only the regular Switch does this, not the Switch Lite.

The Nintendo Switch is underpowered compared to the PS4 and Xbox One, and some of the games are priced a bit higher. However, this is generally seen as a bit of a tradeoff, because of course the thing is less powerful, since it's designed to be used as a portable also, and of course the games are more expensive, because the Switch doesn't have a disc drive and cartridges are more expensive than discs.

There are three main draws to the Switch, and the ability to easily go back and forth between portable play and play on your TV is the first one. The second one is Nintendo's first-party exclusives, which are some of the best videogames made by anyone. The third is the huge wealth of indie games - indie game studios love the Switch, and as a result the Switch has become a utopia for indie games.

But don't expect to find most AAA third-party games on the Switch. No Call of Duty, no Madden, no Grand Theft Auto... again, trade-offs.

As for your questions:

> 1) I want to try some of the pokemon games (I haven't played any, except Pokemon Go which probably doesn't count). Which ones are most recommended?

There are basically two Pokemon games on the Switch - Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, and Pokemon Sword/Shield. Technically, that's four games, but each pairing of games is nearly identical, with the only differences being which characters and monsters are in the game - that's to encourage players to trade with each other to catch them all.

The Let's Go games are going to play similarly to Pokemon Go, as that's what they're based on. They're essentially remakes of the very first Pokemon games, done in a style that's reminiscent of Pokemon Go.

Pokemon Sword/Shield are the latest proper entries in the series, and if you're looking for a "mainline" Pokemon experience, this is the one to go for. These games got into a bit of controversy by cutting some long-running series features (which you won't miss, not having played the series), and for being more than a little old-school in their design (or if you want to be less-kind, "archaic"), however, they still run on a series formula that has lasted this long for a reason - the mainline Pokemon games are incredibly fun to play, and it's a delightful challenge to try to "catch 'em all" and build your own solid team of Pokemon to take on the world.

> I would like to check out Zelda. I've never played and I'm ashamed to admit it. I hear so many wonderful things. Any recommendations on which one? Are older versions available on the Switch?

Okay, so you're going to hear a lot of people telling you to play Breath of the Wild, and those people are not wrong, however, I'm going to take a detour before getting to that.

Much like Xbox and PlayStation, the Nintendo Switch has a service you need to pay to play games online. It's called Nintendo Switch Online (clever, right?), it's $20/month, and I mention it because it comes with a perk - you can download the Nintendo Entertainment System app and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System app, which give you access to a library of classic Nintendo games you can play for free.

The Nintendo Entertainment System app includes the original The Legend of Zelda, which... while it's still a solid game, it has aged kinda' poorly. There's not really any reasonable way to play through it without a walkthrough/guide. It still has some amazing gameplay, but don't play this game without having your browser set to GameFAQs.

The Nintendo Entertainment System app also has Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, which... this is kinda' the black sheep of the series. It's good, but it plays nothing like the other games, and it's damn difficult. It's a side-scrolling action-platformer with RPG elements, while most of the games in the series are top-down action-RPGs or... that but in 3D. Again, this is a good game, but it's not a good indication of what to expect from the series.

However, on the Super Nintendo app, ohhhh-ho-ho... there we have The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, what many people see as the pinnacle of not only the Zelda series, but one of the greatest videogames of all time. It has aged extremely well, and is still a joy to play and explore the world. If you're looking for a good starting point and a good indication of what the Zelda series is about, this is an excellent game to start with.

After Nintendo originally released this game, they released a Game Boy game in much the same style called Link's Awakening, and that game got a recent remake on the Switch. It's a superb game that has a cute little style that makes the world look like little plastic figurines or something. It's also an all-around good game, though not quite as good as Link to the Past.

Now, why did I put off talking about Breath of the Wild? Well, because while it is an absolutely amazing game, it's not the best game to introduce yourself to this series, as it does a lot of things that are very different from most Zelda games. That said, it is also quite possibly the best videogame on the Switch. This is a game that really pushed the bar in open-world games, doing some wildly inventive stuff like giving you an end boss you could technically challenge right after the game starts (if you want to get curb stomped), and a game structure that rewards exploration by tying your progress into all of the little things you find while exploring.

Now, I say Breath is unlike the other games in the series, and that's for multiple reasons. Its open world, its lack of the usual "dungeon - sub-weapon - boss" structure, its lack of its usual themed dungeons, the lack of gaining any significant new weapons after the opening area... however, while this game sheds a lot of time-honored series traditions, it uses that to focus on an absolutely amazing game.

> I'd like to be able to play 2 player games with my SO. PS4 is sorely lacking in that department. Does the Switch have more options?

Hey, so I review games over on r/eShopperReviews and as it happens, I have a page devoted to great multiplayer games on the Switch. Suffice it to say, there's plenty of good stuff there, whether you want local couch co-op or competitive play, or online play.

> One other question: what am I looking at cost wise in addition to the console and a game or 2? Do I need additional equipment?

The Switch sells for $300 ($200 if you just get the Switch Lite). It comes with a dock, two detachable "Joy-Cons" (the left-right controller they use that can split into two controllers for some games), and an HDMI cable - all you need to get started save for a game. During the holidays, they had a deal where you got a free copy of Mario Kart 8 (one of the best games on the Switch), but you probably can't find that now.

Games vary in price - as much as $60 for full-release games like Pokemon Sword/Shield and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, to as low as... well, free, actually (there are some free-to-play games on Switch, and some of them are even worth playing!). So how much you spend on games really depends on which games you get.

However, there are a few other things I recommend that people get.

First, I already mentioned - Nintendo Switch Online. For $20/year, you'll need it to play Switch games online, and $20/year is a good deal for all the NES/SNES games it comes with - and it also comes with free access to Tetris 99.

Secondly, you will want to get a memory card so you can actually download games to the thing. Even some store-bought games require this. You specifically want to get a card that says it is MicroXDSC, and get one that has a good review score on Amazon, because some people make counterfeits. SanDisc makes a Nintendo-branded 128GB card for about $25, but you don't need to get that. For a few bucks more you can get one with twice the space.

Oh, you'll also want to get a screen protector. They're pretty cheap, and the last thing you want is to get a scratch on your new $300 purchase.

Oh, and if you want to play games in local multiplayer, you'll probably want to get another set of Joy-Cons. Yes, you can split up a set to play many games in 2-player, but for many that's a bit awkward and they'd rather have a more "normal" controller. Oh, on that note, you might want to consider getting a Switch Pro controller. They're pricey, but many people find them more comfortable than the Joy-Cons for most games (I know I do!).

Beyond that, what you get is up to you. If you want to see what I, personally, deem some of the best games on the Switch, you can see my review listings here.

Hope this helps!

I would recommend the following...

  1. SN30+ Controller from 8bitdo (Game Boy Edition) over the Pro Controller
--More Features than the Pro Controller, Better D-Pad, Just as Comfortable, Less Expensive
    Link Here

  2. IF you play in handheld mode a lot
--Satisfye Grip IF you play handheld ON THE GO way more than at home. The Satisfye Grip comes with a case that will fit the grip with the Switch docked in it. However, You do have to remove this grip to Dock to your TV. (Grip works WITH stock Joy Cons).
Link Here (This one IF you DO NOT NEED to carry a portable battery charger)
Link Here (This one IF you DO NEED to carry a portable battery charger)
--Hori Split Pad Pro IF you play handheld AROUND THE HOUSE more than on the go. Comfortability is on par with the Satisfye, but you get the addition of a D-Pad on the Left Adapter. Better Joysticks than the Joy-Cons. I recommend this if most of your handheld gameplay is at home because this is hard to travel with as there is no case for Split Pad Pro. That said the Split Pad Pro can dock to while connected to your TV, BUT does support Gyro or HD Rumble. Link Here

  3. Tempered Glass Screen Protector obviously. Link Here
  4. Portable Battery Charger IF you find you play on the go a lot and run out of juice.
    Link Here
  5. IF going with the Satisfye Grip pick up a Hori D Left D-Pad Controller if you play platformers and games you'd want a D Pad for. Link Here (Good Chance your local Walmart, Target, GameStop has this stocked but call ahead. Restocking has been slow since Christmas)
  6. Lan Adapter if you play Smash Online. Link Here
  7. Wireless Power A Game Cube Controller IF you plan on logging hundreds of hours into Smash. Link Here
  8. Here's an adjustable charging stand, I don't have a need for this my nieces play in tabletop mode a lot so my brother bought one and said it's one of the best investments he's made for this. Acts as a stand that you can charge from. Link Here
  9. Micro SD Card. The one linked is the "Officially Licensed" by Nintendo 256GB card. You may not need a card this big. Nintendo also licenses 64GB (Zelda Theme) & 128GB (Mario Mushroom Theme). Link Here
