Any compressor that has a moisture trap and it’s own tank.

Edit: ZENY Pro 1/5 HP Airbrush Air Compressor Airbrushing Kit w/ 3L Tank and 6FT Hose Multipurpose for Spraying Cake Decorating Tattoo Nail Craft Painting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nh3OEbSJHBV0N

Something along those lines

I have something like this. It's a no name Chinese compressor but it gets the job done. This should last for a long time as the pump doesn't need to work all the time. Just make sure to drain the air tank of moisture every time you use it.

Buy a good compressor with tank like this one https://www.amazon.com/ZENY-Airbrush-Compressor-Airbrushing-Multipurpose/dp/B01M33C8MV brand doesn’t matter.

Some good primers (stynylrez, ultimate primer or mig one shot primer).

Some good paints (Vallejo game air set for example)

A cheap airbrush (you will probably break the first one, bend the needle or such) gravity fed to start with and a better one when you can handle it

And go crazy

I have a few quick airbrush questions I can't seem to find the answer to if someone has the time:

  • When cleaning, is it better to pull the needle through the front or back? I've seen videos arguing for both. I think mine has a mechanism to make it easier to pull through the back...
  • Do I need to do anything when I'm done using an air compressor like this other than release the moisture trap? (https://www.amazon.com/ZENY-Airbrush-Compressor-Airbrushing-Multipurpose/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=airbrush+compressor&qid=1607740082&sr=8-9)

Badger has a sale on atm where all of their airbrushes are $56 USD which will get you a high quality brush for a steal. Even if you end up hating airbrushing you could sell it for more than you bought it.

Any of the 1/5hp compressors with a tank and a regulator/ moisture trap - which is pretty standard, will do you. Like this one. Just don't get suckered into a branded one.

This is the one I use for painting model car kits, have had it for a few years, it works great and haven't had any issues yet. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_EhpZFbPFRA8DH

Almost every airbrush compressor out there is one of three types made in China. One is a basic compressor with no tank, one is the same compressor but with a small tank, and then the third is the same type but in a dual piston configuration. Paasche and Badger compressors are just rebranded versions of that same Chinese compressor but with some new skins and embellishments. A quick Amazon search says this one is the current best deal.

I have this variation of the second one. To be honest, the thing about Amazon compressors (and many products in general) is that they are all the same product branded under different names.

If you already have a compressor with a tank then you're really probably not upgrading with any of these compressors and if you truly want an upgrade pick up a name brand from a hobby store. If your compressor doesn't have a tank, then any of these would be an upgrade and they will all preform similarly.

Any cheap air compressor with a tank on amazon will work. The all come from the same Chinese factory and are just rebranded.

Anyone that looks like this

I haven't heard of this brand before but seems cheap and reviews look good. Seems like you gotta do a little tweaking. Might want to grab a badger airbrush since the iwata I mentioned is 150 by itself and those cheap master ones are not that great

I got an Iwata Neo and a Zeny compressor and they've both worked great for me so far.

this is the compressor i use, it has a little bit of a leak around the regulator connection but that can be fixed with thread tape or an o ring https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_jbv3FbZHBE10Q

For the hose, the braided style that you have is perfect. I have had the one Iwata makes for at least 8 years, and I have kept it pressurised pretty much that whole time, and I have not had any problems with it.

Not sure about putting a regulator on the compressor you got. I would probably put the money towards a better one that has a nice regulator with a pressure dial installed. I just did a quick google search and found this one on Amazon that is very similar to what I use. No clue how good it actually is, since the one I'm using is a different brand that I got 8 years ago, but it looks like the exact same model, just from a different company.

Anyone have time to give some purchasing advice for someone looking to start indoor airbrushing? (Mainly topcoating for now)

I'm looking at the NEO CN Gravity Feed Dual Action Airbrush: https://www.amazon.com/NEO-Gravity-Feed-Action-Airbrush/dp/B004INERK4

and its suggested compressor: https://www.amazon.com/ZENY-Airbrush-Compressor-Airbrushing-Multipurpose/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=pd_bxgy_3/133-9934573-6840927?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01M33C8MV&pd_rd_r=b69e7da1-1024-4fef-b048-9f5ab3e620ef&pd_rd_w=V5Vjg&pd_rd_wg=fBi6H&pf_rd_p=ce6c479b-ef53-49a6-845b-bbbf35c28dd3&pf_rd_r=GS9TDHH156QJR53HG532&psc=1&refRID=GS9TDHH156QJR53HG532

I also need a recommendation for an indoor spray booth, preferably with built in ventilation. I've seen some that can pack up/fold which seems really cool. I don't mind paying extra for a premade one (as opposed to building one.)

Also, how much does indoor temperature affect airbrushing? Does it need to be as heavily regulated as it is outdoors or is just indoors in general fine?

Thanks for any help.

I'm also just starting out! Waiting for my supplies to come in. So if anyone here more experienced is reading my post and sees something wrong please tell me!

I decided on not buying a bundle kit and bought the airbrush and compressor separately.

Compressor w/ tank $88: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_cy84EbTMK31AK

From what I've read about this is great bang-for-buck after checking if everything is working properly. And adapters may need to be purchased to work with the airbrush and hose, but luckily that isn't too expensive.

Iwata Eclipse: https://m.maccosmetics.com/product/9034/910/pro/proproduct-grid/tools/gravity-feed-airbrush-gun

I saw a post here tipping off that the Iwata Eclipse sells new on the MAC store for $142 new. Reduced it by another 15% signing up for their loyalty rewards program (no fee just a membership to rack up points for purchases). That brought it down to $120 before tax.

People have had their Eclipse airbrushes for 5+ years so $120 I believe is a great price for a new one.

Also ordered Badger airbrushes on eBay used. But that's only because I struck a really good deal. I think if you look hard enough and pay attention to the seller's reviews you can find some awesome deals.

Don't get a cheap airbrush. I started with a Iwata NEO and it worked ok but I had lots of issues. Ended up having to buy a new nozzle, later a new needle.

Then I bought an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS and the difference is night and day.

If I had to do it all over again I'd not go any cheaper than a Badger Patriot 105.

The compressor is another story. Get a no name compressor from Amazon (although I recommend on with a tank).

It's slightly above your price point (about $175 total) but it will save you money and pain in the long run.

Just my experience, but I tried one of those portable, handheld, rechargable airbrushes like this. My fiance does spray tans and she had bought this for doing people's faces. And it is great for that. But I tried it with Tamiya acrylics and it was a complete pain in the ass. The air delivery was inconsistent and seemed to max out around 10-12 psi. It also only ran consistently with the charging/power cable plugged in, which make the rechargability pointless. It would sputter and spit and the tip would dry out and clog easily. I had to strip a body twice because of it. For my third attempt at painting the body, I finally broke down and bought a Paasche Model H ($50) and one of those $80 air compressors from Amazon. All I can say is it was a night/day difference. I just thought airbrushing was finicky and took skill/practice. It turns out I just needed the right equipment. I'd really recommend spending the extra money on a proper airbrush setup. If you do get an Amazon air compressor, make sure to get one with a moisture trap, pressure regulator and tank, like this one.

95 dB is very very loud, like city traffic / subway loud. That's... a lot.

I use this one, it is 59dB, refrigerator or office building quiet, $85. It seems to be a generic AS-186, and my understanding is many of the brands are more or less equivalent.

I’m super new to all of this, but you’re probably going to have a bad time with that compressor.

I just started the hobby and bought this

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Es.zEbXXYRB8D

I bought a bundle that came with that compressor and an airbrush for $88(the bundle is out of stock and currently being sold by third parties for 150, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N64M2HM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Tv.zEbMYK7BCW)

The included airbrush is perfectly fine for priming and base coating.

I'm not sure where you're getting it or how much, but for what I saw on that compressor, for $75 USD more, I bought this one with my Iwata HP-C+. That's 75 more to buy the compressor and tank with the Iwata. It's been running well for a year now:

https://imgur.com/a/PVkHDMx

This one is just fine in my opinion:

https://www.amazon.com/ZENY-Airbrush-Compressor-Airbrushing-Multipurpose/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=airbrush+compressor+with+tank&qid=1597419848&sprefix=airbrush+&sr=8-4

Note that many of the lower cost compressors use the same or similar 1/5HP motors and a single piston pump. This is a well know set up. I have a spare compressor I picked up (missing the fittings) at a pawn shop for $10.

I have the top part of the compressor, the silver part, the one that I listed for you. This is the compressor with tank I'm talking about:

https://www.amazon.com/ZENY-Airbrush-Compressor-Airbrushing-Multipurpose/dp/B01M33C8MV/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=air+compressor+airbrush&qid=1607952351&sr=8-5

Notice how this one has the big black cylindrical tank underneath it. This should be fine for 1/35 tanks

All their stuff is labeled "central"...I thnk I found what you were looking at.

Just IMHO....

Depends on your budget, but you get what you pay for...a 90 day warranty and a 20% restocking fee on returns doesn't inspire confidence. It's also tankless. I usually read the 3 star ratings on a product like this. If you have to buy it twice, you could have got a decent starter with a tank for not that much more.

You also want a gravity feed airbrush rather than a siphon feed...looks like it is a siphon feed. Getting a incredibly cheap airbrush can make learning how to use one a nightmare.

Better to go on Amazon and order anything AS-186 and get a Neo CN airbrush.

AS-186 Type on Amazon

This one has free shipping, a 1 year warranty and great customer service.

Need help Pulling the Trigger on a Compressor

I'm between 3 Compressors. I need to know if any of you guys have a reason why I should or shouldn't buy either one of these. I will say I would like something that is not super loud, while I'm not worried about the wife, it is a small room... and I don't want to feel like I left a concert when I'm done painting.

Thank you!
