We use a 1970s era receiver.

This is a modern basic receiver. There are other options out there. Search fm tuner or stereo receiver.

The main problem here is a subwoofer. There are really 2 prices of subwoofers. $150ish or $500. If you get the $150 sub (Dayton SUB1200) you'll want to upgrade that pretty quickly, and then you'll have $150 less for the rest of your setup. If you spend $500 on a sub (SVS SB100) you'll have an absolutely phenomenal sub, and then nothing else.

For $600, I'd do something like this.

Grab a stereo amplifier like this one, and then get a pair of speakers. Something like the Elac Debut B6.2, Wharfedale Diamond 225, Ascend CBM-170, or HSU HB-1 MK2 would be good. Then from there, you can save up and buy the $500 sub and have a fantastic setup.

Apologies for hijacking your thread. I have doubt, hope experts here can help me.

Whats the advantage of using Yamaha R-S202BL over something like SMSL SA300 or Loxjie A30 ?

SMSL SA300/Loxjie A30 has better I/O like Optical Input, usb input, Bluetooth input, and even sub woofer out.

What you need is an audio amplifier with stereo tweeter output and a woofer output.

You can find pretty cheap ones on amazon but if your budget allows I suggest going for a decent audio receiver unit like so.

Hope it helps

Denon seems to be the most popular AVR here, then Yamaha. I am a Yamaha fan so recently purchased my 4th with zero issues. If your friend is really married to 2.0, this should work for him: https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Audio-R-S202BL-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B01EMQI2CU/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2AZSIDYPIEZNF&dchild=1&keywords=yamaha+receiver&qid=1592134109&s=electronics&sprefix=Yamaha%2Celectronics%2C174&sr=1-2 I would be inclined to move up to a surround receiver to give that option for the future, but that’s me and maybe unnecessary for your friend.

Seems like a decent budget option. I also have the Charge 3 and Polk outdoor speakers mounted under the eaves on our deck. We much prefer the speakers to fill the space with sound. Keep in mind that the amp may only support two speakers and have limited Bluetooth range depending upon where you store it. If you have WiFi signal, you could also try to find a receiver (like this) with streaming/airplay/Google cast and add more channels to use both outside and in your garage.

Hi please help, I have 2 bose 251s I want to find a way to play them decent enough without spending a ton of money. Would this Yamaha stereo receiver be loud enough without too much distortion, muddiness ect.. Could I just buy that and be good to go without having to buy anything else?

I am trying to hook up four speakers and a sub woofer to a receiver like this Yamaha receiver that has no subwoofer output. From the Q&A, someone says that I can do this:

>First, you will not find anywhere written "Subwoofer Output", however, that did not stop me to connect a subwoofer. How you can do it, depends on the subwoofer inputs:
case 1: the subwoofer has only speaker input.
Connect subwoofer input with speaker wires to receiver speakers output, parallel connection to L and R speakers or use separate A/B if you like (match Red and Black and don't short them!)
case 2a: the subwoofers has RCA Left and Right inputs, use an L and R RCA stereo cable
case 2b: the subwoofers has one RCA input, use an RCA Y cable (to connect 2 L and R RCA to subwoofer 1 RCA input)
I will mention first that if the listening volume is constant you can connect the subwoofer to the receiver output (the back Output near Line 3).
If you don't like the idea of adjusting the subwoofer volume when you adjust the receiver's volume, then you can use instead the receiver's Phones front output. Use a 6.5 jack to RCA stereo cable (and a Y RCA cable for case b)
A few extra considerations:
- the subwoofer must have his own controls (like volume level control) because there is no subwoofer adjustment on the receiver
- compared to a subwoofer output the receiver output is full audio band frequencies; that is ok all subwoofers that I have seen, have a built in low pass filter
- you will be able to use the back Output for a subwoofer for all sources except for Line 3 (so use Line 1, Line 2, CD,...)
- Phones output is not affected by Speaker A / B selection

Is this correct advice? If so, should I go with case #1 and hook a powered subwoofer to one of the channels that is already being used by a speaker? (I can't tell if that is what is meant by parallel) Or should I buy a subwoofer with RCA inputs?

I am a beginner with vinyls and got a Technics SL-220 turntable a few months ago. For Christmas I got a Yamaha R-S202 Receiver and Sony SS-CS5 speakers. I went to set everything up today but realized that the R-S202 Receiver does not have a phono input for the turntable...

From what I've been seeing online it seems like I have 2 options: buy a preamp for somewhere between $15 to $100 OR return the Yamaha R-S202 Receiver for a receiver that has a phono input.

My question is what will be cheaper and easier? Right now it seems like a hassle to repack the receiver, ship it off (hopefully I won't have to pay for shipping the 15lb thing), buy a new receiver, and wait for it to get to me. But I'm also not sure if there's stuff I don't about as a beginner that would make getting a slightly better receiver a better option in the long term.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Edit: Any specific recommendations for a preamp or new receiver would be very helpful!

You will need something to power those speakers, theyre passive and require an amplifier.

Turntables output a very very weak signal. That weak signal needs to be boosted a little to be usable. That's where a phono preamp comes in. The LP60 has a built in phono preamp, so youre set there. That phono preamp boosts the signal jusr enough to make it usable for an amplifier.

That boosted singal however isn't enough to power a speaker. Your coda 7 speakers need something to power them, an amplifier.

There are hundreds of options for an amp depending on your budget. For $25 to $250,000, there's a huge range.

For as cheap as possible an little Lepai 2020ti will do the trick, $30ish.

If you had a little more to spend, something like a Yamaha RS202 for $150 would be excellent for your setup.

I have a pair of Kef Coda 7 speakers. Wonderful little speakers that were known as being excellent budget spealers back in the day.

The Wharfedales are just passive speakers. They are great ones for $200 but they will not connect directly to the turntable and they do not do Bluetooth. You will need to add an amplifier with BT for that.

https://www.amazon.com/BT20A-Bluetooth-Audio-Amplifier-Integrated/dp/B07BQC7GNL

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Audio-R-S202BL-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B01EMQI2CU

There are a couple options.

As has been mentioned, avoid anything that calls itself a 'PC speaker' set. That will be overpriced and probably not great quality. This goes for anything audio related on PCs actually

I would recommend a decent set of bookshelf speakers. You can get a pair of Polk T15's for like $70 per pair. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RJLHB8 Solid speakers. Nothing to shout about really but also won't break the bank.

If your budget is a bit more flexible and you have a bit more room maybe something a bit larger. I use Monitor 40's ($180 per pair) on my desk https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071MSYEE Bit louder than the T15's. I think they've been discontinued and replaced with a 'new' model with identical specs for more money and with a new name but you can still find plenty around.

Then you would need some type of amplifier. You could go with whatever stereo AV receiver you can get on sale at your local big box electronics store (should be able to find several in the $100-120 range). I would avoid store brands (Insignia, etc) and go with established companies. Yamaha is great for example. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMQI2CU/

You can also go with self powered speakers which would have their own amplifier built in. You can find these as either bookshelf or studio monitors. Most studio monitors are self powered for example but not all. Bookshelfs are much more 50/50 and you need to be sure if the ones you select are powered or not.

Generally speaking though self powered speakers have pretty small amps in them usually (30-70w) though which is not loud enough IMO, and they will typically cost more than comparable unpowered speakers with a separate (typically larger) amp. The tradeoff is you just have to plug the speakers in to the source and not worry about a separate amp.

Both bookshelfs and studio monitors are roughly the same form factor, but studio monitors are typically specifically designed to have a flat speaker response for use when mixing music. This means that the bass mid-range and treble are all equally emphasized.

What this means for everyone who's not a musician is that studio monitors generally have less low end than normal bookshelf speaker which is not concerned with replicating an exactly flat response.

Either way you'll probably want to add a a subwoofer on down the line to really get the low end. That would probably be around $120 is also for a decent one.

My entry:

Amplifier - Yamaha R-S202

Turntable - AT LP60 (Note: you'll be using it's internal phonostage.)

Speakers - ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 bookshelf speakers

Comes in $50 under.

Okay, so I've been searching for something that best fits all of your needs. This is the best I could come up with. It's slightly above your budget but has lots of features.

It has a built in DAC so you can connect your PC via USB for high quality audio. Also you could get one of these cables to connect your Alexa. It should output about 40 watts per channel at 8ohms. Your speakers are 8 ohm and rated for 50 watts RMS so this should drive them to sufficient volumes. Additionally it has bluetooth connectivity.

Another option is this stereo receiver. You could use 3.5mm to RCA cables like the ones I linked to connect your Alexa and PC. I know you wanted a USB in for your PC but that requires a built in DAC. Receivers or amps with built in DAC's are pretty much out of your budget except possibly the S.M.S.L SA300 I linked. This receiver is only $10 less than the SA300 and has no DAC. So sound quality could be slightly inferior to the SA300 since you would be using your PC's built in DAC with this receiver. The main benefit over the SA300 is it provides MUCH more power. Although I don't think you need it as your Speakers only need 50 watts RMS and are fairly effecient. This unit also has built in bluetooth.

I actually own that same Yamaha Receiver and it sounds great and has plenty of power. But my speakers need more than double what yours do and I think It is overkill in your use case.

For only $10 more I would sacrifice the power of the Yamaha for the built in DAC of the SA300 . Not to mention it is WAY smaller and more compact and would be a no brainer if meant for desk use.

Hopefully this helps but I will continue to search for more less expensive options for you.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon $400, Yamaha R-S202BL $130, Klipsch RP-150M $290 = $820. You have $380 left for a phono preamp or am I missing something?

We have to know what the speakers are - Brand and Model? Or at least if they are active or passive. Do they have common Speaker Terminals, or do they have RCA or 3.5mm Connections.

There are many low cost Bluetooth Amps on Amazon that would work assuming the Speakers are Passive -

https://www.amazon.com/Nobsound-Bluetooth-Amplifier-Audio-Receiver/dp/B07QRRQDDW/

This amp is Primarily Bluetooth, but it does have a 3.5mm AUX input if you need it.

Here is an even lower cost version that has a Remote Control -

https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Stereo-Mini-Amplifier/dp/B07W46QV5J/

If you are willing to spend more, and don't mind the size, here is a full sized amp with Bluetooth.

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-R-S202BL-Receptor-est%C3%A9reo-Negro/dp/B01EMQI2CU/

The first amp from Nobsound should be a good compromise between size, cost, and quality.

If it matters to you, here is a similar amp in Silver instead of black -

Connecting a subwoofer to receiver without sub out

Hi,

I have a yamaha r-s202bl receiver ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMQI2CU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DYNuFbHV03QR0 ) with bookshelf speakers connected to A speaker outputs. I was recently given a klipsh r100sw powered subwoofer ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FKH9ZDC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_E-NuFb4M914ZN ). The problem is my receiver doesn't have a sub out and the subwoofer only has rca inputs. I was wondering if I can take a line level to rca converter ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ES9QNA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_V2NuFbA6ZVNBR ) and connect it to the B speaker outputs on the receiver which are unused. Would that work even though my sub is powered? I don't want to blow anything up, any help is greatly appreciated thanks in advance.
