I’d think XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB 3D NAND NVMe Gen3x4 PCIe M.2 2280 Solid State Drive R/W 3500/3000MB/s SSD (ASX8200PNP-2TT-C) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TY2TN64/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_qSq6Fb5NQ5373 that might be a better option. 3500 read, dram cache, and room to expand with your other m.2 later All for $90 less... you could double your ram with that

I'd say you're making it too complicated. Just go for one 2TB SX8200 Pro for $259, which is better than the SX8800 Pro, and call it a day. Pickup a large hard drive in a couple months if you feel so inclined, but you'd be better off buying one larger drive and having an open slot for the future, than filling both slots immediately.

That motherboard has multiple SATA ports and a M.2 connector.

You can use up to 5 storage devices with this. Either 5 SATA drives or 1 M.2 and 4 SATA drives. You can also get a PCIe expansion card with more storage options if necessary.

To answer your questions:

  1. Yes both of them are.
  2. 2 TB is great as larger NVMe drives are typically faster and have longer lifespans than smaller NVMe's. Also larger single disk setups are easier to set up.
  3. I would actually recommend the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro. The Crucial P1 is also a decent cheap NVMe drive.

I jumped on the $200 Adata SX8200 Pro 2TB earlier, but is there really enough performance difference to justify the price increase for this (or a 970 Evo) instead?

Definitely agree with this. 2 SSDs would be sick in a laptop.

Another option for consideration if you're looking at standard 2280 PCIe NVMe. Has some of the best ratings on Tom's Hardware :)

If you want to splurge, you'll have a top-of-the-line nvme SSD. You could also wait and get something like an Adata SX8200 Pro or a Mushkin Enhanced Pilot E for ~$200 on a sale (3500MB/3000-3100MB read/write speeds).

windows is saying i have 61GB left but windirstat says it's only used 145.2GB

there's no excess partitions that i can see.

i tried cleaning caches and such. but no avail.

i did just do a system swap today

6700k --> 3900XT but that shouldn't be a root cause?

is this indicating my SSD is dying / dead and some chips have died?

it's still displaying it's full capactity of 1.86TB

this is the SSD i got

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TY2TN64/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Running windirstat as admin showed me that redis was causing massive file buildups of 64 gigs.

Deleting redis folder fixed the issue

PRIME Z370 is the motherboard on this iBuypower tower (don't feel bad!) but this SSD you posted should be compatible!

I think I read that your motherboard has an m.2 slot for a faster SSD if you were interested but I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending this unless you were able to look on your motherboard and tell me the exact model.

This is the m.2 NVMe ssd storage that might be compatible with your system also. It's on sale but I could tell you if it's compatible if you provide me the mobo full model :)

For games... Id stick to a gen3 for much cheaper. I bought this 2tb NVME with 3500mb/s and DRAM for $230 after a coupon plus I get 5% cash back. performs on par with the Evo. Nvidia RTX IO may be able to utilize NVME drives in like 1-3 years as developers release games that can benefit, but it still seems hard to imagine that 5000mb/s versus 3500mb/s will make much difference.

For Gen4 you're probably looking at spending like $400 for a 2tb so over 50% more for what's probably 50% performance in some cases but nowhere near that for gaming.

How is the Adata Swordfish 2TB m.2 SSD?

The price seems to have dropped a bit, which does give it good value - especially compared to Sabrent's $249 alternative - but I wonder what it sacrificed in order to reach that price.

P.S. I found a XPG 2TB SSD with Adata parts that costs $249. What's exactly will I find different here?

I'm using this Adata https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TY2TN64/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and it comes with a stick on thermal pad looking heatsink. The question I asked at tomshardware forum was the same as yours. Even with just a thinish thermal pad I was told not to use both, though unlike yours I could have squashed it in there. Mine wasn't preinstalled so I just used the thermal pad that comes on the bottom of the MOBO cover.

If you can find something for under $260, then you can take that, but this is a very fast SSD especially taking a look at the price https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TY2TN64/ref=twister_B07WQKKS8V?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Lol it seems like the 970 Evo Plus is like $430, yes that's the best but the difference isn't going to be noticed in realistic performance unless you're literally transferring extremely large files for a long time each day

For heavy-duty tasks like video editing and professional graphics, I wouldn't use an SSD that has QLC flash memory because it's neither as fast nor as durable. Spend a bit more and get something like this. On the PSU front, the EVGA SuperNova 850 G2 ends up being only about $7 more up front if you use promo code EMCDGGM39 at checkout, and it turns out to be cheaper after mail-in rebate. Even if something gets messed up on the rebate, it's still a great power supply that will give you more headroom in the future if you want to upgrade to a 3950X and/or a more powerful GPU. Your build looks pretty solid otherwise. Good luck.

Looking for 2TB NVMe in the $250-300 range. I've narrowed it down to the Sabrent Rocket, or the ADATA SX8200 Pro. Is there any appreciable difference between the two? btw, /u/NewMaxx thanks for your resources they are very useful.

Let's go through the list.

  • That CPU is complete overkill. At most, gamers should use a Ryzen 7. The Ryzen 9 gives you more cores and threads, things you don't need as a gamer. Gamers don't even need the number of cores provided by Ryzen 7, it's just a nice to have so you can have other processes running while gaming. Ryzen 5 3600 is the best value CPU, if you want no compromises, get the Ryzen 7 3700X, but we're talking a difference of \~5fps.
  • Your need for a fan depends on if you overclock the CPU and how much you care about noise. If your Ryzen CPU comes with the Wraith Spire, that's a good fan that is perfectly fine for stock speeds.
  • Motherboards do not factor into VR support other than you need enough USB ports. If you don't have enough, you can buy a PCIe USB card. The number you need depends on the headset, I think Oculus Rift uses the most at three. The two things that matter are GPU and CPU strength. GPU is more vital.
  • Your current motherboard selection is a mini-ITX form factor, which is the smallest and most expensive. Your case is for full size ATX motherboards. Mini-ITX will fit, but there's no reason to pay the extra cost and shove all the parts close together if you're using a full size case anyway. Mini-ITX is also generally not good for first builds because of the space constraint. Look up ATX boards, they are far friendly to work with.
  • No one who doesn't know they need 32GB of ram needs 32GB of ram yet. Save your money and get 16gb.
  • Samsung 970 EVO is always overpriced compared to competition. Adata SX8200 Pro is, in a practical sense, as good and only $260 for 2TB. For value purposes, I don't recommend going above 1TB for M.2 drives. You can find 1TBs at $100-125 and 2TB SATAs for $200 or less (less would probably be "refurbished").

Everything else is fine. Here's a new build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3L3qV7

Assuming the Pi would need USB 3.1 Gen2 (or 3.2) to reach these speeds. If you have that, why not max out the Gen2 rate at 10gbps (1250 MB/s vs the 800 and change of this T7). I just ordered one each of these, which should hit that 10gbps limitation. Are there faster nvme's (especially pcie 4.0) ? Absolutely, but if you're looking to go through USB there's no point. There's that USB superspeed 20gbps for 3.2, but I rarely see it implemented even on full blown ATX mobos.

i share your frustration, no different than the 9th gen max 17 rtx 2070, still has got a bit though. touchpad unevenness, n key rollover, 0.85v gpu voltage limit, no per key rgb, nose camera. But ive managed 8hr 20 min battery life with an undervolt and with two 2tb nvme drives installed. youtube playing 25% brightness and websurfing mixed in. Now is the time right now to buy a larger nvme drive, prices have dropped since the last 2 years. Ive got the microcenter inalnd premium drives 2tb e12s controller but 512mb dram cache. scored 7000 in assd. the 1gb dram version with the e12s controller transfers files faster than the 970 evo and has a 160-300gb slc cache. the gammix xpg s11 and adata sx8200 are what imn talking about, and theyre on sale and cheaper than the microcenter drives. https://slickdeals.net/f/14268134-2tb-adata-xpg-gammix-s11-pro-series-nvme-ssd-newegg-225?src=frontpage

It looks pretty good. The main thing is that you could probably use a B450 tomahawk (https://www.newegg.com/msi-b450-tomahawk-max/p/N82E16813144267). That would save you about 75 bucks. Also, 3600 ram is the sweet spot for ryzen 3rd gen so you might want to consider changing that. Also, for about $30 more you could upgrade to a full-on PCIe x4 SSD ( https://www.amazon.com/XPG-SX8200-Gen3x4-3000MB-ASX8200PNP-1TT-C/dp/B07TY2TN64/ref=sr_1_2?crid=18M16OJO713ZN&dchild=1&keywords=adata%2Bxpg%2Bsx8200%2Bpro&qid=1591554416&sprefix=adata%2Bx%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-2&th=1).

I'm looking at the WD Black SN750 2TB NVMe (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M9VXSXG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1)

$250 on Amazon right after tax $271 but I've also seen the XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB 3D NAND NVMe

For $250 with a $20 off coupon included basically negating the tax.

Could I get some advice on this and is main question being is the $20 savings worth it? Or should I just roll with the WD? I'd assume there support and such would be better. I just don't know technically if it's worth it.

Thanks!

Edit: Links! Little background: I have a 1tb Samsung 860 SSD and a 4 tb HDD but I'm looking to expand a bit more with games getting bigger and needin

I've personally found building a NUC out and running Proxmox to be the most effective method. I have saved templates of various operating systems I can build and the container template library built into Proxmox has been very useful for quickly spinning up a Linux OS.

I also use a Synology NAS DS918+ with 4x2TB 7200 RPM drives, 16MB RAM, and 2x1TB M.2 SSD caching drives as my longterm data storage for various ISOs, OVAs, installers, repository clones, GitLab repositories, NFS/iSCSI datastores, and running my basic network services (DNS, NTP, LDAP, SSO, proxy, etc...).

Components I bought for the NUC (Total $1,075):

This NUC gave me the ability to do anything I needed in terms of virtualization. It has onboard Wireless so you can train on various wireless security tools. I'd also recommend a hardware managed switch so you can properly explore the L2 behaviors that are not fully replicated in virtual switches even with promiscuous mode on.

Building out your home lab, in my opinion, should be a priority. It will be important for learning and growing in the cyber space. Don't worry about buying expensive laptops with graphics cards because they will quickly become outdated. If you are on a budget, get a cheap refurbished Mac from Apple. Setup NoMachine on the VMs you build in Proxmox or use a SPICE client and install the QEMU Tools on the VM.

What do you mean? I'd like whatever meets my needs and has a decent "money's worth" ratio.

If it was proportionally cheaper I'd consider it but, take a look: $250 vs $269 w/coupon vs $243. And we're talking QLC vs TLC... It seems budget options have stepped up.

There are many benchmarks over the net, this one](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.tweaktown.com%2Fcontent%2F8%2F7%2F8702_02_intel-ssd-660p-review-consumer-qlc-debut.png&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tweaktown.com%2Farticles%2F8702%2Fintel-ssd-660p-review-consumer-qlc-debut%2Findex.html&docid=mpE3czAqW1_HlM&tbnid=H_K6-bqz0dzPZM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwj0wJ-v9aPnAhWQHbkGHTYwD-4QMwhDKAEwAQ..i&w=620&h=620&client=firefox-b-d&bih=948&biw=1914&q=660p%20sx8200%20review&ved=0ahUKEwj0wJ-v9aPnAhWQHbkGHTYwD-4QMwhDKAEwAQ&iact=mrc&uact=8) or this one for example.
