I think that also is using a Realtek chipset, so you'd end up with the same issue (I'm not 100% sure on this though). I searched for other usb wi-fi adapters, and it looks like most of them are also using Realtek chipsets. Instead, if you're not completely averse to opening the laptop and replacing a component, I would go for something like this: https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-AX200-PCs-802-11AX-Bluetooth-NGW/dp/B07TLBNSZQ

Can you link the card? Good morning all!
I recently learned that m.2. slots can accept wireless internet cards like this one.
My question is: will it work in any m.2. slot? It does it need a slot designated for WiFi?

Is this it? Other options that you might suggest? I'm currently using Ethernet, which is not bad thus far.
Just out of curiosity, why would you not recommend the dongle? From quickly looking on newegg I see a lot for a few US$.

Cheap upgrade, make sure you’re connected with Ethernet cable first so you can install the driver.

If you have a free M.2 slot, I'd just go with Intel.
https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-AX200-PCs-802-11AX-Bluetooth-NGW/dp/B07TLBNSZQ/
If you don't have a M.2 slot, you can get an adapter to use it in PCIe slot.

IF you really want Wifi 6, you can get a b450 board and swap out the wifi card with for about 23 bucks: https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-AX200-PCs-802-11AX-Bluetooth-NGW/dp/B07TLBNSZQ/ref=psdc_13983711_t1_B07V9N9XVJ?th=1
B450 has the best performance per dollar value imo.

There are plenty of WiFi 6 devices. And even in old ones you can swap the WiFi card for $20 to a new WiFi 6 one.
Most laptops will be a quick swap.

I don't think that it will be very hard to do. The process is the same on all laptops. The WiFi 6 AX200 card from Intel is popular.
1 points • MrIronGolem27
Gonna need to see a source on that, because add-in AX cards don't seem to dip below $30 new on Amazon and not everybody has a spare Key E M.2 slot for stuff like this.
A PCIe Wifi add-in card is also going to cause problems with airflow if you're working in an mATX case and the motherboard doesn't have either (1) PCIe x16 in the first vertical slot and PCIe x1 in the fourth or (2) PCIe x1 above the PCIe x16 slot.

our buy a cheap one and change the adapter. It is only 20 dollars. (https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-AX200-PCs-802-11AX-Bluetooth-NGW/dp/B07TLBNSZQ)

You want a simple question? You got it.
Will this wifi card/chip work with my Asrock B550 Pro motherboard? I think so but the little tabs on the wifi card/chip say M2 A and M2 E but motherboard only mentions M2E.

If you'd like to get a different board getting an addin WiFi 6 chip and pcie adapter is like 30$ or so. It also comes with Bluetooth 5 and better range than the normal built in motherboard WiFi cards.
Right now it's only 23$ plus tax. For the Intel WiFi chip.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TLBNSZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_fvCAEb8XTMQ65
The pcie pcb board you place it into is this. For 14$
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MFGYAX6/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_rzCAEbBQWM20R
Let me know if you have any questions. This is a great addin for allowing use of Xbox controllers when playing steam games and etc .

Probably. I only used an internal WiFi adapter once and that was quite a while ago (I'm now hardwired, but occasionally use USB WiFi adapters). I assume Gigabyte/Asus make decent networking cards since they make motherboards as well.
The only issue on some boards may be spacing. A full ATX should have plenty of room for a GPU and a network card. A micro ATX is questionable since the GPU is usually in the slot closes to the CPU, it would be right on top of another PCIe device (and some GPUs take three slots).
However, for small boards, there are m.2 slot networking adapters. You'd run the antenna outside the case. Here's an example (I think it's Intel). Gigabyte also sells AC one with an antenna and backplate. The PCIe cards may just be these m.2 cards mounted in a board. (They probably all are. Using PCIe boards keeps the m.2 slots free, though.)

that's good to hear. I'm not really crazy about the fingerprint reader but i did order a new wifi card for my x1c6. This one specifically. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TLBNSZQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It was only 17.99. I haven't installed it yet. I'm hoping it works.
Do you know if you can disable the fingerprint reader in bios?

Powerline adapters?
Why not get a Wi-Fi adapter like this (USB), this (PCI-E), or this (M.2)?

> Is there any significant difference between the m.2 interface versus the PCIe interface for a wifi adapter?
No - in fact, most PCIe cards are actually just holders for m.2. cards with the antenna built-in.
Something like this is the card you're looking for:
https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-AX200-PCs-802-11AX-Bluetooth-NGW/dp/B07TLBNSZQ
You'll also need antennas e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Antenna-RP-SMA-2-4Ghz-Extension-Notebook/dp/B07QKF18KM
I couldn't find one that comes with a bracket but you find them on ebay for cheap, e.g. this one

The b550M HDV is hot garbage. Outside of PCIE Gen 4.0 support, every other feature is bare bones, no USB-C, limited fan headers, low end components.
I'm not sure if this counts as the similar price range, but the B550m Pro4 is apparently 150 ASD. Aussie prices don't show up properly for me. It gives you a high end realtek 1200 audio codec compared to the lower end one on the b450m steel legend, and the lowest end one on the b550 HDV, PCIE gen 4 support, it has amazing connectivity options with tons of usb ports and internal slots and so on, you can easily add an m.2 ax200 wifi card and antenna set (25CM ngff pigtails needed) like this and this (taken from american amazon) if you need wifi and keep the extra pcie slot open for expansion cards later.
IMHO easily worth the extra 25 Aus, but not sure how tight your price range is.
Failing that, the B450m Steel Legend is a really good board.

Which one on the list that I posted should I buy? They have so many, don't know if all are legit. Some of the "Intel" AX200 chips listed have different numbers on them. WFM number, BDM number, numbers under the barcode. I don't know what all that stuff means or if it matters. Posted examples below as well.

It really depends on your usage habits. How much does your current PC have? Do you feel like its enough? In my opinion as an IT, today for personal computers 8GB is an absolute minimum regardless of operating system. Anything less is for smartphones and raspberry Pis. Especially as online student, you will probably be dealing with lots of browser tabs which are known to be the biggest memory hogs. If 16GB is not too far out of your budget, then go for it. Better have extra than not enough. You can get this one: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC4-21300-SODIMM-260-Pin/dp/B019FRBHZ0/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2JLIMBM1AIKTI&dchild=1&keywords=crucial%2Bsodimm%2Bddr4%2B16gb&qid=1594685172&sprefix=crucial%2Bsodimm%2Bddr%2Caps%2C199&sr=8-1&th=1 they have 8 and 16gb models. Choose 2400MT/s version as thats the fastest this motherboard will run. If you buy 2600 or 3200, the motherboard will underclock it to 2400.
As far as other upgrades, this laptop has 2 M.2 NVME slots, one of which supports M.2 SATA. The Sata/NVME port runs at full speed, while the other NVME only port runs at half speed.
replacing the stock M.2 SATA drive with M.2 NVME will give you a fairly noticeable boost in boot and loading times, and even bigger boost in large file copy/move operations.
Faster/more expensive, and my personal favorite NVME to date: https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-SN750-500GB-Internal-Gaming/dp/B07M64QXMN/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=sn750&qid=1594685288&sr=8-2&th=1 if you go with this one, since its significantly faster I recommend replacing the default SATA drive with this, as its way too fast for the secondary NVME port.
Slower/bit cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-SN550-250GB-NVMe-Internal/dp/B07YFF3JCN/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=wd%2Bblue%2Bnvme&qid=1594685033&sr=8-2&th=1 if you go with this one, you can ADD it along with stock M.2 SATA. It's just fast enough to cap out the secondary NVME port. Its slower than WD Black but still significantly faster than stock M.2 SATA.
Depending on how fast your home network and internet speed is, you may want to upgrade your wireless/bluetooth adapter. The stock one will do about 150mbps up/down. You can get this https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-AX200-PCs-802-11AX-Bluetooth-NGW/dp/B07TLBNSZQ/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?cv_ct_cx=ax200&dchild=1&keywords=ax200&pd_rd_i=B07TLBNSZQ&pd_rd_r=cffc35e2-9227-41a0-907e-8a6586548424&pd_rd_w=Ffq1o&pd_rd_wg=26LbU&pf_rd_p=13bf9bc7-d68d-44c3-9d2e-647020f56802&pf_rd_r=SHBYCP0XZHPT2GTSSB5H&psc=1&qid=1594685570&sr=1-1-791c2399-d602-4248-afbb-8a79de2d236f which will go up to 400mbps on 802.11ac, and even faster if you have WiFi6 (802.11ax) compatible router. This is only needed if you have really fast internet at home(more than 100mbps), or if you have some sort of home server that you use for file storage and whatnot.

I think these links make the difference apparent:
The original looks like this:https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=11327
And the AX200 looks like this:
I guess if I find a "modern enough" PCI express half mini card that should do it though.

The wifi/BT card in these older ITX motherboards are old. Upgrade the card to the latest card and maybe buy new antennas.

Congrats on the new laptop and good luck next semester! I've really loved everything about the laptop so far. I've used it for work, on travel, and gaming and a few things standing out after / I would mention are:
-It's a relatively slim laptop for the components
-The display is sharp and bright (has an IPS display by default)
-The keyboard has been nice to type on and it's great having a numpad
-The 1660ti has been a beast
-The upgrades I did from the get go were replacing the memory; Adding a secondary SATA SSD; and upgrading the wi-fi card (cheap upgrade and dramatically improved my laptop's network throughput and bluetooth compatibility)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TLBNSZQ/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L3D19MY
-The only real negative I've had is the speakers, but I use headphones for the most part.

I work in IT currently and even with everything going on right now work has been extremely busy. I would say having handled laptops, desktops, monitors, from various manufacturer's for work Dell's been one of the best about qc but still ymmv.

You could buy a PCIE card and the same wireless card for your motherboard. https://www.amazon.com/Deal4GO-Wireless-Adapter-Desktop-Converter/dp/B08BWXNXFS/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=ngff+to+pcie+card&qid=1603674821&sr=8-6

Also if you need more ethernet ports just buy a simple network switch to connect to your router for cheap.
