A wacom tablet to help me design better/ improve my abilities

I want to get out of working retail, and finally make some video games. Something that people really enjoy and talk about. Something that 20 years later people would really be excited if it got a remaster. I've gone to school to learn, but right now it's paycheck to paycheck. But life is getting better everyday. I know what it feels like to want to just quit everything, but if I didn't go through the abuse, screaming, hopelessness of my past, I really wouldn't have the world I have today. And I'm very thankful for what I have today.

It's a Wacom Intuos S. When you get it, you get 3 free drawing softwares you can download. Clip Studio Paint is the one I use.

I’m not too much of an artist but I’ve designed a couple of tattoos I want to get and it was so much easier using a touchscreen laptop and a bamboo ink plus I have. Correcting mistakes was just hitting the undo button. I’ve heard Wacom tablets are pretty good and it’s reasonably priced.

it is far more natural to draw on a drawing tablet than it is on a screen. Wacom does a good quality but cheap one

I just started and I use this. It's kinda small and the pen's buttons are uncomfortable but those are the only downsides.

Good entry-level graphics tablet?

I'm trying to get into digital art, and want a drawing tablet that's not too expensive. I've been looking at the Huion H1060P and the Wacom Intuos Small (CTL4100) , which are both $80 on amazon.

A lot of threads online recommend the Intuos, but the Huion seems to have better specs with a tilt stylus, higher resolution/pressure, and larger drawing area. The Huion is larger and weighs 1.5 lbs more (2lbs).

Portability doesn't matter to me that much; I'd probably be drawing at my desk the most, but maybe I'm underestimating the convenience of the Wacom. Maybe when I go back to school it'd be nicer to carry around.

Opinions on which tablet I should get, if not a different one? Are the features of the Huion worth it for a beginner over less portability?

Thanks a lot man I really appreciate it. I’ve always been curious as to how it works. I knew it wasn’t just pencil and paper for this type of thing.

Could I just use this and plug it up to my 2020 MBP? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079HL9YSF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Zdu8EbMAD5FRM

Okay so, a drawing tablet isn't a tablet like an iPad, it's a blank slate that you hook up to a pc so it'll take pen inputs. It's a classic digital artist's tool that's been used for decades. He suddenly has to cancel a raffle, which he was doing to celebrate hitting a milestone, and now he can't deliver the prize, because his means of making it was this tablet.

For an example of an art tablet: https://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Drawing-Software-Included-CTL4100/dp/B079HL9YSF/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=wacom&qid=1583805079&sr=8-3

> You don't have to go this fancy, I did because all of my online lectures are being saved for permanent online offerings of the course.

This is a key part. If you're not doing online beyond the short-term necessity, get a Logitech C92x and a decent mic. But otherwise, do invest a bit in a sweet setup.

I don't use a cam except for short personalized videos and quick hellos at the beginning of class, so I use a C920 without any special lighting. Most of my course material is screen recordings which sound great: I record from a walk-in closet with this Rode lav mic. I also use editing software for certain videos, but again, I don't think I'd bother if I was only doing it for the short-term. For live sessions in my area (programming and IT) a multi-monitor setup and a drawing tablet are really helpful.

You're right, the combo is expensive. I just meant an iPad that is compatible with Apple Pencil.

https://imgur.com/R5wxDcK.png

Look up info on which iPad's are compatible, but definitely I know the iPad Pros are compatible.

The pencil and iPad are a very good combo. Pretty much as good as Photoshop and a tablet. It's portable too.

I still recommend using Photoshop with a tablet like this though; Photoshop is a bit more versatile than ProCreate. But both are great.

When you post later be sure to include the drawing with the post too so we can help you better.

all the cheaper drawing tablets on the market are screen-less (you'd have to look at your computer to see what you're drawing) from my experience the screen tablets are fairly expensive as you're basically getting a second monitor with a stylus.

I'd recommend starting with a cheaper tablet like the Wacom Intuos, because while not the greatest, it's a good start and definitely works once you get a hang of it. Or if you want to, you can try and get a stylus for your laptop.

I used a Wacom Bamboo and Wacom Intuos for my early digital art days, but just didn't enjoy the feel/workings of my $400 monitor tablet. I now have an iPad Pro + pencil and that's all I use, occasionally making tweaks in photoshop. Of course this is just my personal experience, you might experience something different. Do some looking and research before you do what I did and blow your cash on something you won't use! Good luck!

Pretty much an essential tool. But if you aren’t actively drawing and painting, the pro lineup might be overkill, especially the larger sizes.

Depends on your needs. Intuos pro are great devices and will last as long as you need/want them to.

For dodge/burn and simple photo editing tools:

One by Wacom Graphic Drawing Tablet for Beginners, Small (CTL472K1A) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S1RR3FR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WjoSEbMRBV69Q

If you WANT shortcut buttons and slightly more flexibility and ease of use:

Wacom CTL4100 Intuos Graphics Drawing Tablet with 3 Bonus Software Included, 7.9”x 6.3″, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079HL9YSF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8loSEbRR1HGCC

If you WANT wireless, replaceable drawing surface, MORE/better buttons and touch wheel, and touch support like a trackpad, pinch to zoom rotate etc, consider the PRO line of devices.

This is essentially what you're looking for --

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079HL9YSF

These are typically for graphics applications, but they'll work as a "mouse/pen" also.

The grid correlates with your monitor.. so as you hover the pen above the monitor (not touching it) it will give a "mouse cursor" so you can see where it's at on the screen.. as you actually touch the graphics pad, it will "write" or draw on screen. These will usually have all of the pressure sensitivity options.

I actually prefer the smaller sized ones like this.. some people prefer the large 12" ones but I think the 4x6 ones are a lot easier to do (less travel)

A Wacom tablet will last you a lifetime. There's the Bamboo and the Intuos that are within your price range. I purchased a Wacom CTE-650 about 10 years ago for $100 and it's still what I use for my work today.

I'm aware that there are other tablets out there for cheaper, but I've personally had a lot of complaints regarding charging your pen (Wacom tablets don't need a pen charger), regarding drivers and lack of support (Wacom still has driver support for even my 10 year old tablet), and build quality (I've dropped my pen a million times over the years and it works perfectly).

Good luck!

This is a hefty list of requirements here. and the budget isn't that great considering the requirements.

Aside from the mentioned surface book, the Dell XPS 15 2in1 is prob the only other one that I think would fit here, and it might be over budget when you factor in tax. Its got an i7 8780u, 8gbs of ram (I would advise that you upgrade to the 16gb kit, since its soldered on and cant be upgraded) and vega M graphics about on par with the 1650max-q. This model does overheat apperently, but I think thats something that your just gona have to deal with for a gaming 2in1. Battery life is good, and it has a solid display with pen support.

To be honest man, as someone that is in college and takes notes electronically, you might be better off just getting something like the wacom drawing tablet to carry around with you to write stuff down (There is a learning curve there, I would practice it a bit before actually using it in class). I have a bluetooth one that I use for some minor photoeditting work and for drafting, and they arnt terribly expensive, I bought mine for 40 bucks usd. Itll free you up for many more options with better specs, and cheaper ones as well.

This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Drawing-Software-Included-CTL4100/dp/B079HL9YSF/ref=sxin_2_ac_d_pm?ac_md=4-0-VW5kZXIgJDEwMA%3D%3D-ac_d_pm&cv_ct_cx=wacom%2Btablet&keywords=wacom%2Btablet&pd_rd_i=B079HL9YSF&pd_rd_r=c254b25a-7cf3-4bf1-8167-ef4f2a9d50ba&pd_rd_w=kOKug&pd_rd_wg=5WZ7O&pf_rd_p=ef07af27-e48f-451d-ab63-8b6b216a0bc3&pf_rd_r=K9EG767R0BN4NGBQ7SP0&qid=1579879182&sr=1-1-22d05c05-1231-4126-b7c4-3e7a9c0027d0&th=1

Since this post is also for questions/help, I hope my post belongs in here.

My current tablet is the "Huion 420", which i bought back then because I just startet playing osu and wanted to try out how a tablet feels. So I looked up the cheapest tablet I could find.

Now that I play the game pretty often, I want to upgrade my tablet to a better one. Now there are 4 tablet but since I can't decide which to buy, I hoped maybe someone could help me with that.

  1. The XP-Pen StarG640
  2. The Gaomon S56K + Huion P80 pen
  3. The Wacom CTL4100
  4. The Huion HS64

(I'm a dragging player, if that is relevant)

Thanks

Hey man im 19 too. I'd imagine you don't want to go work somewhere which is how i feel. I've been at it for over a year now and I'll tell you where to go. You do need a drawing tablet such as a wacom cintiq or an xp pen. So first you just need to know your budget. A cintiq or xp pen you can see what your drawing on the tablet itself. On a wacom intous you can't see the screen on the tablet itself just on the laptop which really isn't a big deal just different. Don't worry I'll give you some links to them so you can see yourself. Thats first off is the drawing tablet, next is the program. Two free programs are krita and opentoonz. If you're a student or get through it on adobe you can get adobe animate with all the other adobe programs for 20 dollars a month. Which actually is an advantage since the editor is also included. If not and you go with krita or opentoonz which are also great choices, id just pay for an editor such as easy video maker for $30 out right. Which is a great option, i used it for a long time. About how to animate it, i would look at gingerpale's video on how to animate storytime animations and domics video on it. They are both in adobe animate but it doesn't really matter what program you're in, there is just different approaches to them. I think definitely the best way of learning how to do it is reanimating some of you're favorite scenes from odd1sout, alex clark and so on. It will definitely help you gain lots of understanding rapidly fast. Now the best way of staying motivated, yeah it takes alot of work but also just remember to have fun because you really are making a cartoon. You'll have to learn how to animate, just the basics of editing and the different programs. But that's just a thing that you gotta do. Some advice is k.i.s.s " keep it simple stupid" in the wise words of dwight from the office. Just go through the tutorials and stay calm. Make sure not to get frustrated and keep it simple. Once you've got it, your just chillin after that. Here are some links to some stuff for you to check out of some different price ranges. Hope it helps have a good one!
