[HDD] Western Digital 1TB 7200RPM - $18.28

I would recommend an air cooler such as the Noctua NH-U12S or Noctua NH-U14S as chenzyjerry recommended. They are very high quality.

It might be worth allocating more of the budget to a bigger monitor; 21.5 inches looks too small in the long run, in my opinion, and 24 inches budget monitors are very cheap now. Sceptre and AOC make good budget (gaming) monitors with Acer and Asus a bit higher up the food chain.

Regarding the HDD, I am not sure the legitimacy of Hitachi - if you feel the same, the WD Blue 1TB drive has worked great for me :).

I hope you enjoy your build!

For a good quality hard drive, check this one out.

If you're looking for cloning your pre-existing OS onto this new hard drive, you can use EaseUS disk cloning software. Launch it and follow the insturctions (there are multiple tools that can do the same, find the one that suits you the best if needed).

SMART is a series of criteria that determine the overall health of your hard disk drive, and the values given for each set of criteria are used to determine the likelihood of your disk failing in the near future.

Hard disk drives read and write over the same parts of the disk constantly, they move things around, sectors die, etc. There are so many reasons a disk drive can be nearing the end of it's life, luckily storage is dirt cheap now days. Every critical document you have should be backed up at the very least to another disk drive.

Hard Disk Drives are mechanical components with analog storage, there's no software fix for disk drive problems really. They just go bad, they have a finite life span and it's just something that happens.

Go on Amazon, search HDD, almost any disk drive that shows up within your budget will be perfectly acceptable and will last as long if not longer than your current drive. Within your budget you are looking for a couple things:

  1. A drive that is at least as big as yours, but bigger is better
  2. If you use your PC for anything other than web browsing try to get a 7200rpm HDD (if you can't afford an SSD of equal or greater size)
  3. You'll want to try and stick with a brand like Western Digital or Toshiba, something reputable. Other brands can be perfectly fine but if possible go with a well known brand.

That's about it. Storage is pretty basic, especially on the HDD side of things.

This HDD is just about in your budget and it's a fairly decent general purpose drive, 7200rpm for higher read/write speeds. But please look around for better deals.

Try using /r/buildapcforme and see what they recommend.

I bought this HDD and it works fine.

I took a real network adapter and installed a sata adapter into it. There are plenty of ones on ebay that already support sata, but they tend to not actually have any network functionality. They are easy to tell apart since they usually have some no name company branded on them and a yellow sticker over the ethernet port.

There are a variety of ways to put games on the HDD over your network. This process is usually slow due to limitations in the actual hardware. Quicker to do it by plugging the HDD into a PC and transferring that way. There are way too many tutorials online for all of the ways to do it, so google it and see what method works best for you.

The thing that truly kills me is that storage space is insanely cheap today.

You can get 1tb for $45 - and that is even at 7200RPM. It's not even a slow media drive like we used to deal with before when we wanted mass storage for cheaper. The 7200 is literally the same price as the 5400.

Do people really think $50 for more storage than 90% of the population can fill is asking too much?

Make sure to get an SSD, even a 120 gb just for windows to be installed on, because it will greatly improve the speed of the computer. If you can splurge the extra $12 bucks than opt for the 240 gb. Pair that with a 1 TB HDD and you've got storage taken care of.

Hello Dead,

Just as a suggestion you may consider adding a HDD to your list. If you put the OS on the SSD your system will run faster and the HDD will provide ample storage and be less expensive up front. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1\&amp;keywords=1tb+hdd+internal\&amp;qid=1592610315\&amp;sr=8-4&_encoding=UTF8&tag=iminant-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=dbbe49b0403c64a602a6112928ce416d&camp=1789&creative=9325">HDD</a><img src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iminant-20&l=ur2&o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />

This would be a good option and seems to be relatively good priced though you may want to check your particular market as you appear to be out of the US so the price may not be exactly the same comparatively speaking.

No worries, the fun part about building your pc is learning everything in the process. And sorry, I meant SSD, not SDD.

SSD = Solid State Drive HDD = Hard Disk Drive

These drives are your storage to store everything on your pc from pictures to programs. SSD is the more advanced and quicker storage than the HDD. The SSD also came out with a newer and quicker interface than the SATA interface that I’m going to show you. It’s up to you if you want the newer technology.

Here are my SSD/HDD recommendation for your budget:

7,200 RPM drives are faster than 5,400.

If you want to save money by not investing in a SSD. I would research this brand for speed and reliability. I personally have a Western Digital Blue 2TB drive for my games and its fine but Iam looking at SSD when I can afford a 2TB+ drive. So if you are going to get a platter drive I recommend looking at WD Blue or Black. Remember that start up time is one thing that is impacted but so is download time as well. You could have great internet speeds but downloading games could take hours longer because your drive bottlenecks

I personally bought a 1TB SSD and use exclusively that, rather than an SSD and a separate drive.

As far as brands for SSDs, I go with Samsung typically, Though Western Digital tends to be less expensive. Here's a good one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073SBZ8YH/

For the capacity of the SSD, I wouldn't go lower than 256 GB, and 512GB is probably a good middle ground.

You'll want a SATA SSD, which uses the same connectors as regular hard drives.

If you're wanting a good, cheap HDD, I'd suggest something from Western Digital's "Blue" line, they have a 1TB HDD for like $50 right now on Amazon.

No problem! The only thing I would add to this build (depending on how much storage space you need) is a 1-2 TB HDD, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK

All the other components look good.

Processor/mobo decisions

Hi,

I've been accumulating parts to build a new mid-range (whole setup <$1000) PC for a few days now, waiting out for sales and such until I find a decent deal. I have a Google Doc prepared which lists my current setup if you're interested, I know its not PCPartpicker but it works:

&#x200B;

CPU: R3600, R3300x?

GPU: Sapphire 5600 XT?

~~Case: - 84.99 (Rosewill Prism T)~~

~~Power Supply - 58.35: Corsair CX550M (found on eBay for a great deal in the current climate)~~

Mobo: Gigabyte Aorus Elite? Steel Legend ASROCK? Pro4 ASRock? STRIX B450-F? Tomahawk MAX? (lol no chance of that going back in stock it seems)

RAM: https://www.newegg.com/xpg-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/0RN-00KG-000A3

59.99

Storage:

29.99

44.99 (I will probably [hopefully?] find a better deal than this)

~~Monitor: 169.99 (Newegg 144hz Acer)~~

Keyboard: ???

~~Mouse: free (bundled w/ case)~~

Anyways, I really would like to have this PC set up by the end of this month and I could use some advice regarding what to do for the CPU and mobo. As we all know, b450s around the ecommerce-verse are practically nonexistent right now except for a few scalpers on eBay and newegg, and while the Ryzen 3300x was supposed to be available a while ago, it also is basically unattainable except through aliexpress, which is obviously a no go. Basically my questions are:

Should I wait a few days for B550 and get a bottom of the barrel one of those? Or should I grab a cheap ASRock Promontory B450 (the only B450 in stock right now it seems, and only in micro ATX) or wait for other B450s to come in stock?

And should I wait for the 3300x to go back in stock or go with a 3600?

I will be using this PC for school, which will include using a lot of music production software (ableton) and the like, as well as some gaming, a mix of newer AAA games like Forza Horizon 4 and older titles like TF2.

Yeah, USB to SATA cable, Internal Hard Drive, and PS2 Network Adapter.

I use this drive: Western Digital Blue 1TB https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs-ajax1_0?cv_ct_cx=western+digital+blue&dchild=1&keywords=western+digital+blue&pd_rd_i=B0088PUEPK&pd_rd_r=78ce92b7-3287-4e28-a771-00de636f22a7&pd_rd_w=oytM4&pd_rd_wg=MKvqw&pf_rd_p=914d9fa7-0b02-4e0c-8659-a466cf5c8c6e&pf_rd_r=ECW3XEP88781J9FKYB20&psc=1&qid=1602285039&sr=1-1-776e1b88-8838-403c-9ba3-fc5054845b7e

And this SATA to USB: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07SGRBVB7?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

With this Network Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071ZQ2PMR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

There are cheaper options of course, but I can vouch for these being an ideal setup But both Amazon and Ebay have cheaper options that should be fine, but I haven't used them.

Ok, from the sounds of it you need to replace a few parts, the fans are cheap - $13.

The Hard Drive will run you $44.

Finally the Power Supply Unit aka the PSU will run you $22. My advice to you is to save up what gift cards or money you can towards these items. You'll need some screwdrivers for the repairs, but I can walk you though it.

I checked out the pricing, ms azure cloud is 20$ (roughly)/month fro 20GB space. Google one drive is 3$(roughly)/month for 100GB

I will admit that is much more cost effective. A developer at minimum wage is about 420$ per week, system developer would take 1 month, a terrabyte hard drive is 31$(roughly)

The developer though is likely already on staff so you could say that cost is null potentially. With google this would take 10 months to catch up to the 30$ cost, and with ms you would be saving money by month 2.

7200RPM is the gold standard for home computing. Any other RPM, wether it be faster or slower, are really built for long term storage solutions and offer there own benefits and downsides.

Western Digital and Seagate are the two big boys in consumer hard drives right now, so things like [WD Blues](https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK) and [Seagate Barracudas](https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-128MB-2-5-Inch-Internal/dp/B07D99KFPL/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=seagate+barracuda&qid=1592688418&s=electronics&sr=1-4) have been recommended for years now. When looking for a new one, look the capacity, cache and reliabilty from customers.

This 1tb sata SSD is $110

This 1tb M.2 ssd is $124

This 1tb HDD is $50 and this 128gb SSD is about $34 (for roughly $84)

&#x200B;

I'm assuming you are running windows and are building a new pc (although that CPU seems to defeat this point). Personally, I would go for either of the first two options. SSDs are not that much more expensive then a HDD (look at entry level laptops, most of them are running cheap M.2 or sata ssds). Other than that, you're PC will be fine for quite some time with paradox games.

Maxtor was king way back in the day.

These days, if you go with an unmodified official network adapter, I suggest a 250GB PATA drive if you can find one. There are usually some 250GB PATA drives available as new on eBay if you don't mind that.

Alternatively, if you go with a SATA modded network adapter or an unofficial one, I suggest a 1TB WD Blue. Reportedly, 2TB HDDs will work, but I suggest 1TB for better compatibility.

In advance, SSDs will be utterly pointless. The interface for the PS2 (and the PS2 itself) is not remotely fast enough to gain any advantage from their use.

I'd Google/youtube "mrmario xbox" and watch his videos on the matter. He also does alot of great coverage about upgrading your harddrive updating your soft mod to Rockey5s all in one softmod (which you can upgrade to from whatever came on the system) He helped me out a ton when I first started. I then got more versed in the hobby and I'm 5 or 6 xbox mods in now.

Cables that I use every time are these but really any 80wire should work if you are upgrading the hard drive. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003IDF0JC/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_qqArEb786QVA6

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002J1Y36/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_gGxJEbDDGVV5N

This is the hard drive I use https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_erArEb04GEJQ3

And this is the IDE to SATA adapter I use https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JVUXMRI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_fsArEbCPWD5DC

If you need a flash drive to redo the softmod or anything a usb to xbox adapter is the way to go from my experience with those damn disc drives always failing after all these years. I dont remember where I got mine but I think it was amazon. The best thumb drive I've found was this one though.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002U213Y8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_bCxJEb69PC9SS

As far as playing them off the hard drive yes. That's the only way I play my xbox games except for KOTOR 2. That one requires the disc till you get past a certain part. Theres like 3 other games you need to burn to discs or or use original disc like Tony hawk American waste land and project 8, and I think two of the Harry Potter games. But I dont own those so I've never played them. Lastly you need to try and get the clock capacitor out asap whether you are using the xbox or not. If it leaks it will cause rot to develop and the xbox is 100x harder to fix after that. Oh and you may want to have a laptop or pc with an ftp program to transfer games over to the xbox as it's faster than ripping every game directly to the hdd. Hope this helps

Here's one example of what you can do from a quick browse of ebay/amazon:

$44 * 3 = $132 : Three 4MP cameras

$40 Raspberry Pi

$45 1TB HDD

$23 HDD dock

$15 POE switch

= $255 for cameras, compute, and storage, bought within the US (no waiting 4-6 weeks for parts from China)

Add on maybe $20-$30 for cabling, power adapters, a microSD card, and any other bits and pieces

These are ethernet cameras, but POE so you have a single ethernet cable going to each of them for both power & data.

If your budget is tight, you can save by buying 2nd hand parts, buying parts from China, picking a cheaper Pi board, choosing basically any other camera that has an RTSP output, etc.

Considering that Rainbow Six Siege is about [90GB](https://support.ubisoft.com/en-gb/Article/000080364) and you don't imagine you'd be storing any else (like videos, photos, programs, other games) I think you'll have enough space to last for a good while. So, yes I think it is enough until you decide to download more stuff. However, storage isn't that expensive in the first place so I would consider asking yourself is it worth, for example, to save $10 on a [500GB HDD](https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-3-5inch-Internal-Warranty/dp/B00X95ROOS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=500gb+hard+drive&qid=1608988417&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A18WXU4I7YR6UA&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFZQTJIQkJUTTM1NUEmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAwMTAxMjkzVDUwSUVOUDE5VTBDJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2MTAxMDcxMEJFOFhQN09NWFpNJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==) vs. a [1TB HDD](https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=1tb+hard+drive&qid=1608988469&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExQlUzN0tFTDNGODQmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA2NTM3OTQxVElLMzNTRlNWNjBHJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxODcyMjlIWDNDSkRBTVdWN1Umd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl)?

Okay, I made a build.

&#x200B;

I asked you about your previous build because I wanted to know if you could take some parts out of that one into the new one. Sadly that is not the case and 1000USD - while a lot of money - is still a relatively restricted amount to build a whole computer from if every part is supposed to be high quality. I tried to make a balanced system and landed at \~1080$. It is weird that in my country's online stores, the same build cost the equivalent of about 100$ less than it did on my amazon recommendations, so I advise you to look around aside from amazon if you can get better deals for the individual parts. Also currently the prices went up because of supply chain issues due to the corona virus so if you don't absolutely want to upgrade now, I'd recommend you wait at least until autumn of this year.

&#x200B;

|Part|Prize in USD|Amazon Link| |:-|:-|:-| |Case *|90|Fractal Design Focus G Mini| |Power Supply|85|be quiet! Pure Power 10 600W| |CPU|200|AMD Ryzen 5 3600| |Mainboard **|135|ASRock B450M Pro4F| |GPU|375|MSI Radeon RX5700| |RAM|98|Corsair Vengeance 16gb DDR4-3000| |SSD|57|Crucial MX500 250gb| |HDD|40|WD Blue 1TB HDD|

* I don't know if you can or want to reuse your old case. If so, make sure it has space for the graphics card.

in this case it's 271 mm long.

** The mainboard might need a bios update in order to work with this CPU. I wanted to find a x570 mainboard because that chipset was made specifically for the 3rd gen ryzen CPUs, but they are quite expensive and would have further restricted the build.

If you are not going to overclock: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NWcctp

Here is how it will perform with rainbow 6 seige with high / ultra settings: https://youtu.be/b4XwWdMPqjk?t=576

If you are going to overclock: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VMwVQq

Performance fortnight: https://youtu.be/rq1hKAS7TwA?t=99

Performance rainbow six: https://youtu.be/rq1hKAS7TwA?t=576

Overclocking the gpu could give you 10 more fps and lowering settings to medium and low might let you hit that 144fps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite PC Part Picker saying the motherboard is not compatible, I checked on the manufacturer's website and it *is* compatible.

You can add a 1tb hdd although I think a 512gb ssd would be enough.

Here's the entry level Alienware Aurora R9 (AW's latest desktop refresh besides the Ryzen edition which some consider R10)

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/desktop-computers/alienware-aurora-gaming-desktop/spd/alienware-aurora-r9-desktop/wdaurr910s

Specs:

Intel® Core™ i5 9400

Windows 10 Home 64bit English

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 SUPER™ 6GB GDDR6

8GB HyperX™ FURY DDR4 XMP at 2666MHz

1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s

Cost is $869.99 USD on Dell.com, on Dell University (Dell's student website which you really just need a link to access) you could likely get it cheaper depending on which specs you would want. But we'll use the regular pricing since Amazon which I'll use for the pre-built parts does not offer a discount. Taxes nearly anywhere but a tax-free state in the US will make that over $900 so lets round it to that. OP said building that would be "50-60% cheaper" so that'd be $450 right?

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-9400-Processor-Processors-984507/dp/B07MGZ9FJZ/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Intel®+Core™+i5+9400&qid=1587487472&sr=8-1

https://www.amazon.com/NEW-Windows-Home-English-Sealed/dp/B07SJH85ZH/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=windows+10&qid=1587487490&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&smid=A2TPX7741KL5KM&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFSWTMyOEcyWjBGS0wmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4ODgxMTUyQk9BOVQ0SFZHVU1DJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxMjg5NjMzVERDOE1VU1dYMzBIJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

https://www.amazon.com/gp/huc/view.html?ie=UTF8&newItems=C7bb3b541-ce50-406b-a251-e2fbcb6631bb%2C1&siHasShown=1

(Here we've already proven that 50-60% cheaper price wrong)

https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-2666MHz-Desktop-Memory-HX426C16FB3A/dp/B07WHF6YDL/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=8GB+HyperX™+FURY+DDR4+XMP+at+2666MHz&qid=1587487572&s=electronics&sr=1-2

https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=1TB+7200RPM+SATA+6Gb%2Fs&qid=1587487596&s=electronics&sr=1-3

You're also going to need a PC case, so let's add this NZXT one for $80

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TC76671/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Lets assume this is also your first build ever and you wanted a basic mouse and keyboard for set-up, Alienware desktops come with one I know so lets add this shitty office Dell bundle for $30

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-KM636-Wireless-Keyboard-5WH32/dp/B01FM8H22S/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=dell+desktop+mouse+keyboard&qid=1587487708&sr=8-3

That comes out to $757.83. Just over $100 cheaper before tax.

And again, depending if you're a student (or just someone with this link https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/delluniversity/ab/delluniversity?gacd=9614781-1019-5761040-0-0&dgc=st&gclid=Cj0KCQjws_r0BRCwARIsAMxfDRiwlH6Qrq8H_32TcJRw9ioTQzsTLDWR0A_g6CHOSWgkBYr9CPKWYMsaAoaaEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds oops) and go on Dell University, you could probably get the same thing in a shiny Alienware package with a year's manufacturer warranty for the whole machine for around the same price.
