This is 60hz but 4k: https://www.amazon.com/VP28UQG-Monitor-3840x2160-Adaptive-FreeSync/dp/B074PK4R2H/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=ASUS+ROG+PG259QN+360Hz+Monitor&qid=1599935649&sr=8-2&tag=pcce-20

This is 1440p but with a higher 144hz: https://www.amazon.com/AOC-CQ27G1-DisplayPort-adjustable-Zero-Bright/dp/B07V39QHMY/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=1440p+144hz+monitor&qid=1599935786&sr=8-3

So whichever you think he would like more, 4k at 60hz or 1440 at 144hz. I personally would go with 1440 at 144hz.

That's not an optimal combo.

PS4 only supports 1080p and 2160p (4K) at 60Hz, there is no 1440p support or 120/144hz support.

This means on some 144Hz 1440p monitors you will have higher input lag at 60hz output vs 144Hz (or 120hz) and the image will be softer as it must upscale the 1080p to 1440p.

The PS5 will be the same as the PS4 Pro but with addition of HDMI 2.1 120hz support at 1080p and 2160p, Sony have given no indication they will support 1440p which is a PC resolution not a TV one. Also Sony have given no indication they will support Freesync either only HDMI-VRR which is used only on latest high end TV's.

So currently your best option is a 27" 4K monitor with low input lag like this even if its little over budget.

I got this Asus one before I got my PS5 in anticipation during the summer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074PK4R2H?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It supports 4k 60fps but no HDR. For the price I was seeing at the time it seemed like a deal

Hey Square,

I run off a laptop with Retina display but work with external display cuz my neck (duh)

Because I work with 4k footage a lot I decided I needed to see what I was doing, so I cheap-ed out and bought this Asus 4k monitor. To be totally honest, the viewing experience freakin' sucked. The whole thing felt like a clunky dead pixel bath.

For some reason I preferred the viewing experience on my 1080p Sceptre monitor...

Takeaway: buy a real nice monitor if you can. Although, then again, I'm always having 1/2 or 1/4 playback... So maybe two monitors is cool!

Just ordered my 4K monitor on Saturday. Should be here tomorrow. I’ve had an Xbox One X for almost two years now, but I’m barely doing this upgrade lol they are just now starting to become more reasonably priced for a gaming monitor (monitors, especially gaming monitors, are generally more expensive than TVs at the same resolution). I’m pre-ordering the series X, so I had to make sure to do the upgrade before I get it. Definitely have to go at least 4K with all of that muscle.

I don't play a lot of competitive shooters, but I was getting into Valorant (basically CSGO) before the beta ended. I've been playing around with streaming (lol the hard part is getting viewers) and it was very popular on Twitch. But I play all sorts of games, really, and FPS is a small minority. I think my main concern is how it all looks, I think. I was playing Metro Exodus and just felt kinda underwhelmed with it on Extreme settings. But I know I won't be able to run THAT at 60fps.

So do you think the $200 Sceptre is something I should avoid since it doesn't have any kind of adaptive sync?

Edit: i also found this asus for a little bit less than the LG.

Are IPS panels significantly better in terms of appearance? Or is it "better" but in a way only a connoisseur could tell? I could spend a little extra for the LG if I need adaptive sync and if the IPS is worth it, but if it isn't a huge difference... idk, my current 1080p monitor is a TN so maybe I should get the ASUS since it's cheaper.

Edit again: the LG also has HDR 10 though... which I've also read is a big deal. The ASUS doesn't. But I think I read a comment indicating the LG's HDR isn't "true" hdr and is some kind of software emulation?

Like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B074PK4R2H/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1590537874&sr=1-3&refinements=p_n_feature_fifteen_browse-bin%3A17751804011&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&dpPl=1&dpID=91ttSUjDUzL&ref=plSrch

It also has Freesync so it’s perfect for the Xbox One X for variable refresh rate (VRR).

The cheapest 4K currently available is the Asus VP28UQG, however, I would make sure you have the specs to actually run any games at a reasonable FPS first seeing how low your monitor budget is.

The gpu i thought i listed it. But its a msi gtx 1060 6gb. I know the graphics card won't let me utilize a full 144hz monitor or play in 4k, but I'm looking between a 4k monitor (https://www.amazon.com/VP28UQG-Monitor-3840x2160-Adaptive-FreeSync/dp/B074PK4R2H/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=asus+gaming+monitor&qid=1606009024&sr=8-8) or 1080p monitor (https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VG27VH1B-Supports-Adaptive-sync-FreeSync/dp/B088MKB54B/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=asus+gaming+monitor&qid=1606008656&sr=8-4) (Also actually i prefer not curved display)

doesn't have to be asus, just what I'm looking at. Budget for monitor is around $200-300 but I'd like to keep it around the middle at $250

As for the build I can go up to $800 or so (for the pc parts) Hard drives and ssd's will come over from my computer, just getting the m.2.

I'll look over what you sent me tomorrow morning and see what I can make out of it. Thanks for your input :)

When you mentioned using an Xbox one X I thought I'd have trouble selecting monitors that would go with it, but some reviews came in clutch mentioning how the two pair.

This Asus would be your best bet. It's 4K and has freesync with which your Xbox can utilize to smooth FPS and prevent screen tearing. There's also a few different versions of the monitor on that page you can also look at, the IPS monitor shown will give you better colour accuracy and colour gamut coverage. And if you could reason going $40 above budget you could get HDR support with this LG monitor. Both have reviews saying that they work great with the one X.

I hope this helps.

Asus VP28UQG28" 4K $280 + ASUS VP249QGR144Hz 1080p IPS 1ms $159 = $439

This seems like a better deal than spending $1000 to $2000 on a 4k 144hz monitor.

4K 60hz not working with USB C to DisplayPort cable

I just got a Dell Latitude 5400 from work to use at home, which has an Intel UHD 620 graphics card and a USB C port (NOT Thunderbolt).

I have an ASUS 4K monitor with HDMI and DisplayPort inputs. I am using a USB C to DisplayPort cable that indicates on Amazon that it supports 4K transfer @ 60hz.

Everything I am reading says that this setup should work and support 60hz. However, when I plug in the monitor to the laptop, it only gives me the option for 30hz at the 4K resolution. Can anyone help me figure out why I can’t use 4K at 60hz rather than only 30hz??

Currently looking at monitors as I currently have a 1080p 60hz that I need to upgrade from.

While I would like to do the whole shabang with a 4k 144hz monitor, my college student budget does not really allow for that. I'm interested in getting a 4k 60hz model because I feel that it fits my interests best.

I think I have narrowed it down to these two monitors:

LG (currently a prime day deal)

Asus

I'm curious as to what others think about the two options and if they will fit my wants or not. Also if there are better options elsewhere I would love to check them out!

Budget: $350

Size: 23-29 inches

Aspect Ratio: 4K

Adaptive Sync: any

Other Features: speakers or audio out jack

Usage Type: Gaming(mostly single player) and programming

-----------------------------------------------------------------

After doing some research with my friend, we brought our list of 4k monitors down to three, but we are open to other options. The three are:

Right now, we are split on which is the best. I personally think the Acer solves the most at the most convenient price, but the Schrodinger's box on its HDR is concerning.

My family has had bad experiences with Samsung tech(specifically their washers) so I have a general lack of trust towards their products. But, since I can buy it from Microcenter, it does have the benefit of being the easiest to try and return if anything bad happens.

The Asus is just straight up cheapest and most convenient to buy. I can also easily set it up and return it since I live near an Amazon store. But its price point suggests it may be the one with the worst make/build.

Since I can't make up my mind on this, I wanted to get advice from reddit on which monitor to choose.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To elaborate further on what I'm going to use this monitor for, it's for gaming for Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out. And then later on other 4k games ideally. I'm buying this in preparation for the release of 3080 since the release matches my original timeline for upgrading my PC across the board(RAM, CPU, MB).

The reason I explicitly mention 4K is because I mainly play single player games so I'm fine with slow response times since I'm currently using a TV anyways and I want the game itself to look as pretty as I possibly can within my budget.
