I use these! They are the best for mimicking actual sunlight. That being said, it's a light you leave on and the color of the light it spits out isnt desireable for lighting a home really... so i usually keep mine in the least frequented room/area

Hey I just got a similar one (this one), so I would also like to hear the answer because the clips are a little inconvenient and I'm hoping it wasn't a waste of money!

There you go! Hope that link works... I bought these primarily because I have a cheap pair of headphones from the same brand that I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of, just as I am impressed with these lights (and of course many of the reviews). I'm sure there are better ones but for me this was a great budget friendly start and as I said - my plants love them. They're really good space savers, too, if you have a small apartment like me.

I have this one on my desk, and I’ve been really happy with it. I used it to start my propagations and I’m now using it to germinate cactus seeds - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07RTWMTX3?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Idk if its considered compact or affordable, but i looooove this one.. Its reasonably priced for me and works so well. I use it as my only light source for all of my plants and theyre all very happy and always popping out new growth. Im sure its not as awesome as natural sun, but it works very well for me. I can show pics of my set up if it helps 😊

I'd definitely suggest a light source other than the sun, then.
I use this: https://www.amazon.com/VOGEK-Adjustable-Gooseneck-Brightness-Settings/dp/B07RTWMTX3
It's super nice, and allows for more than one terrarium, all on one plug. You can set timers, and intensities.

Hi know there my answer for this is probably buried somewhere in this sub, but I’m looking for a small grow light that can clip onto a ledge. I found this one then one review said it’s not strong enough for succulents:
I only have an east facing window with morning sun and my succulents are already etiolated after two weeks of putting them in pots. They are sitting in my windowsill so a clip would be perfect.
Any advice appreciated! Thanks.
1 points • sarahaflijk
I dunno if you need anything quite as expensive as what the other commenter is suggesting if this is the only plant that needs light. I don't have anything nearly as big as yours, but my lemon and lime saplings have been doing really well with this clip-on style light that was about $35 (and looks like it has a coupon available right now).
It has 3 heads and I really only use one on my saplings, so I'm sure if you positioned all three heads in the direction of your tree, it would be plenty happy.

Which ones? There’s three. One on each shelf. I got them all on amazon. This is the big one on top, but I def didn’t pay that. I paid 26 so keep an eye on it.

this is the clamp lamp (cLamp)
Honestly it’s my favorite out of my three cLamps, the arms actually hold the lights in place super nicely (for both of my other cLamps the arms just suggest where the lights should be) and the timer is really nice. Also the clamp itself seems great.
Also it looks like it’s on sale, it’s cheaper than when I bought it!

Yes! She lives indoors . I have her near our back patio door that’s a SE facing window. Im from NorCal :) I think imma find a better place around the house that lets more light shine down on her . I was just scared because of reading up on her, I read that she gets burnt easily.
I was thinking about getting this light (link below) but am still learning about different lights and how far it should be . Def would love some links or recommendations.

They do like the red and blue for sure, some plants like different ones at different times I haven’t gotten that far yet hahaha. I only use LED lights because the generate less heat and I don’t need to replace bulbs. For the regular I basically have the same thing you do
1 points • brittanybegonia
Yeah I did. Mine all work excellent. The only problem I've run into is that because I bought them all at different times, I ended up with 3 different kinds and the colors of light they give off are slightly different. It ends up giving me a bit of a headache if I look too long. So definitely buy the same brands if you get multiple lol
This one is probably the best of the three, the clamp is the sturdiest and it's got an automatic timer and adjustable brightness levels. I've never had a problem with the bendy arms drooping or bending on their own(the bottom light in the pic in particular for some reason won't stay, the arms droop really bad so I had to support one arm on top of the other).

If you don't have a top shelf to connect the long lights to and need a clip-on light, I bought this light. I have around 12-ish 4" terra cotta plants (and a few other odds and ends pots). It has a 3/6/12 hour timer and a great range of brightness. I have had great growth in the past couple fall/winter months, especially in my props and younger plants!

This is one of the ones I have and I love it! I also have something similar that’s on a tripod. As long as it’s full spectrum you should be ok, search for one that fits your set up.

I’m a fan of orchids. Flowers are beautiful and can be long lasting and I find it interesting to watch the roots and leaves develop. Much depends if you have adequate light though, I’ve added grow lights.
Trader Joe’s have some inexpensive ones to get started with, but know they will eventually have to be repotted. They’re grown fast by adding more medium to the perimeter of the pot, best to remove the plug thing it starts with and add fresh medium, otherwise they die a slow death. I switched to LECA beads and use glass pots that I’ve drilled, I really like being able to see the roots. https://images.app.goo.gl/2jHKseRX34gJkYmXA

Yeah, if that led panel looks like too much of a hassle then dont even think about hps or mh. With mh and hps you cant just screw the bulb into a reading lamp or even shop clamp socket, you need a ballast, reflector and ventalation. hps and mh lamps are not really suitable for anything but marijuana because of how much they cost both to buy and run. They also put out alot of heat which isnt ideal either. Leds have progressed a ton in the last several years and at the scale I need (2'×2' footprint) they are perfect. If you really want mh or hps you better have a good $300 to spend up front plus $50/month
However I do use a cheap $30 clamp 3 headed led lamp for starting seeds. This is probably what youre looking for, but its really weak. You can always try to find a socket light at a hardware store but honestly neither of these are made for growing plants, and unless you can keep them dormant youre going to have problems https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RTWMTX3?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_asin_title
Ive seen some people use t5 flourescent with some sucess but these are still not nearly powerful enough for anything but dormancy or seedlings, theyre also more cumbersome and produce alot of heat, led is simply better in every way now. If you insist on a socket type light this is probably your best shot, https://www.amazon.com/100W-LED-Grow-Light-Bulb/dp/B07H9W1TSZ/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=100w+led+bulb+grow&qid=1601490869&sr=8-10
I had the same delemma with finding a place to set it up but its not as inconvienent as you might think, if you dont want to hang it from the ceiling you can always attach it to something, you can take the power supply off tge top of the panel so its actually lighter than a socket light. It would fit perfect on a lab clamp or dog grooming arm.

Hello all and thank you in advance for any suggestions or insight.
Background: Pinguicula
- Pinguicula laueana was purchased potted in LFS/Live Sphagnum from Exotica Esoterica. P. esseriana was purchased potted from UC Berkeley Bot. Garden.
- P. laueana was repotted into a larger pot in a mix of peat:pumice:sand, with higher percentage of mineral substrate. P. esseriana was left in original medium, which seems to be similar with maybe a bit more peat.
- Top water is provided until a small amount of water drains out of the bottom. Water offered about once a week. Distilled water.
- Currently inside a well ventilated glass "jar" (wide mouth and side opening) two protect from cat.
- Currently under Vogek Full Spectrum Growlight (https://www.amazon.com/VOGEK-Adjustable-Gooseneck-Brightness-Settings/dp/B07RTWMTX3) for 12+ hours daily. Prior, plants were placed outdoors for direct light for about 4 hours (winter in San Francisco)
- Daytime temp around 62F (indoors), night time indoors around 54F. Near windowsill so may drop a few more degrees F.
- Humidity is fairly low, as it is indoors without tray method.
I have noticed that both Pings are producing smaller than average leaves, of which are considerably less sticky/has less mucilage. Is this an early sign of winter succulent-phase dormancy? Is this an issue with light levels? P. laueana is/was fed flake fish food occasionally every two weeks or so.
Background: Drosera slackii
- Purchased potted from California Carnivores about 1 month ago. When shipped, some leaves were dry while one or two retained some mucilage.
- In original pot and potting mix, which I assume consist of peat, sand, and perlite.
- Watered via tray method with distilled water.
- Currently in glass jar with wide mouth sitting in water with alongside D. hamiltonii, which is producing new leaves after shipment and has some mucilage.
- Vogek grow light for 12 hours or so, same prior and current light situation as Pings.
- Same temps as Pings.
- Ambient humidity is low, as indoors, but is in jar with water, so probably an increased in humidity.
The D. slackii has not produced any new/normal sized leaves since arrival. It is not longer "dewey". It arrived with two small, seemingly forming leaves, which now seem stunted and "unraveling" very small. Center of plant looks good and red, no black/mold, but no new leaves yet.
Is this a a sign of shipment shock? Improper lighting/humidity?

Thank you

Hi! I can help with this! I live in a 12x12 studio with my fiancee and pittie, so I feel your struggle.
I'm not very savvy with specs, but I've been using these two grow lights for the past couple of months and my succs have been very happy! They don't get any additional. sunlight besides the lights and I just keep the heads a couple inches above my boys. Some of them are even stressing, so I think that lights are up to snuff. I think I would recommend the 3 headed option (mainly cause it has a timer). But the heads on the two headed guy are a little larger. Either way, I'm a hella novice but no one seems to be etiolating, so I'd recommend both the lights!!

I bought this one first:
https://www.amazon.com/VOGEK-Adjustable-Gooseneck-Brightness-Settings/dp/B07RTWMTX3
Has a timer, flexible heads, can take it down or move it around easily if needed. Downside is that it is relatively small so you may need more than one if you have more or bigger plants.
I then bought these: https://www.amazon.com/Kihung-Light-Fixture-2200lm-8-Pack/dp/B07GPQFHH9
I mounted them under some shelves and they have been awesome. You would have to buy a separate timer, if you want that feature. I still have 6 left which means even MORE lights and MORE plants! Downside is that as my plants grow taller and outgrow the bottom shelves, I have limited light options... so still working on that. These are also suuuuper bright but my plant corner is out of the way of the rest of my living room so I don't mind it.
Currently all my plants are under the lights listed above. I've got a decent variety of plants including hardier succulents, snake plants, and pothos and also some finnicky calatheas... and I haven't had any issues yet. All of my fast growers are putting out new leaves pretty regularly!
Hope this was helpful! Let me know if you want further info or pictures!

These are the primary lights that I attached to the bottom of the shelfs with zipties. They're quite blinding so I'm also getting some sheer curtains to diffuse the light outwards towards the living room. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TYJ22QJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The other lights are the gooseneck type, although if I had to do it all over I would use the first light on all shelves since they seem stronger and would be nice to have all shelves uniform. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RTWMTX3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are amazing, especially for the price. I’ve bought similar lights from a couple of others brands on amazon but this one has by far been the best. I haven’t tried hanging them yet but they do have two holes in the back of the bottom clip that would allow you to do that.
Edit to add: My plants seem to really love these ones as well! They can be hung from the ceiling or screwed into a clamp light fixture and mounted to a shelf/wall. 150W LED Grow Light Bulb Foldable Sunlike Full Spectrum Lamp for Indoor Plants, 414 LEDs Sunlike Grow Lights with Power Cord, E27 Plant Lamp for Flowers, Vegetables, Greenhouse & Hydroponic (2 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081ZRZ4VX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_P5inFbPS36MWR

I've only had these for maybe 6 months fyi and this i my first set of grow lights.
The ones in the picture:
https://www.amazon.com/VOGEK-Adjustable-Gooseneck-Brightness-Settings/dp/B07RTWMTX3
PROS - cheap - 3/6/12 hour timer. I have mine turn itself off and on at 6 am and 6 pm every day. So handy that I dont have to remember and for when I'm out of town - multiple heads for multiple plants - bendable necks...I have some in some really weird positions which is really nice - adjustable brightness - plants seem to like it thus far...aren't growing like crazy, but are healthy and showing growth for sure
CONS - Clamp isn't as strong as I'd like, but works really well if you aren't trying to stretch the necks out as far as they can go horizontally like me lol. - would like a longer cord
I have these in a standing lamp:
Ecosmart 90-Watt Equivalent PAR38... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQ4Q8XT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
PROS - seems to work surprisingly well, I have an alocasia and an orchid going into bloom under them. Would really recommend! - really cheap! - can go into any lamp you own that it can fit into
CONS - pretty big in diameter so won't fit in every lamp.
Hope this helps!
