Just a college student who likes to game and knows nothing about PCs...

Hey, guys, I hope everyone is staying safe. I'm a college student who games on a quite old Xbox One that's nearing the end of its life. I'm debating between purchasing the new Series X or investing in a gaming/productivity PC. An Xbox is a single-use piece of technology, so I am leaning towards a PC. I don't mind throwing a bit more cash towards building a PC versus what I would pay for a new console. Ideally, I would love to get more than my current 60FPS on games. I don't know anything about building a PC, so any advice helps. Thanks!

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

  • Some light gaming (mainly Fortnite; might explore some other titles) and school work. I game exclusively on my Xbox Elite controller, so I'm not in need of some fancy keyboard and mouse setup. I'm just a college student who wants to try out gaming on a PC instead of buying a new next-gen console. Most of my major-specific work involves reading and writing papers -- maybe a bit of statistical analysis in R. In all, nothing too demanding.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

  • \~$1,000

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

  • Hopefully over winter break/Christmas time. Certainly not in the next two weeks.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc\)

  • Pretty much everything sans Windows.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

  • North Carolina -- no Microcenter access.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

  • I play my console games on this monitor. It's 75Hz, so I might need a new monitor depending on the computer build? I don't know a lot about PCs.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

  • Maybe in the future. I'm not quite aware of the merits and dangers of overclocking.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

  • I would like to reach as high of an FPS as possible while maintaining solid graphics and performance. Anything beats my current 60FPS console.

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

  • A royal blue would be nice, but I don't have a strong preference.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

  • Nope, I have access to all software.

Thanks everyone!

Does he have a gaming monitor or tv? If not, this monitor will drop to around $100 on Black Friday. Any gamer would love this cause it frees up the tv :)

Dear User,

Let me just get this out of the way, this a great setup. It has a lot of potential! I would recommend getting a better monitor and getting upgrades on your pc like the processor and video card- this doesn’t matter that much right now. The big thing bothering me is that chunky bezel monitor. It catches my eye quickly- I would recommend getting an Asus, maybe something like this- Asus Monitor

It isn’t the best monitor but it’s good for the price and looks better than a thick bezel.

Great monitor/ and looks so much better than a thick bezel.

Asus vg-249q. 1080p 144hz. Compatible with Xbox 120hz mode. Free sync via hdmi. Ips screen with height tilt and swivel adjustment. Trust me. I have it. EXCELLENT monitor for gaming.

Looked at your price. The above one is $250. For under $200 the next best is the ASUS vg-245. 1080p 75hz free sync 1ms pixel response and a low input lag for console gaming.

I use this one for my Slim and it’s perfect. I play on the desk so I’m not that far from the screen so size of screen is excellent. Maybe even a little big. I play MW and it’s really good. I personally don’t understand how people can sit so far away from a screen and play shooting games. If you have a Pro, look for a monitor that’s capable of 4K but if you have a Slim, 1080 is fine. Unless you plan on getting the PS5 when it comes out. Might as well search for a 4K monitor.

I have a 26ish" Asus monitor that's like 5 years old and it's still amazing and they're fairly cheap. Would def recommend getting one. I can only imagine how good the newer ones are.

Edit: Actually mine may even be 24". But anyways, here's a new one on Amazon for $165.

Edit 2: Also they have built in speakers

This one: My only gripe is that for some DUMBASS reason (I assume price?) it doesn’t have a display port. Oh well. Works nicely until I can get the wife two let each of us get 2x 32” 4k displays lmao yeah right

For the monitor, I was mostly looking into the new technologies like FreeSync but also faster response times. I was looking at this monitor specifically.

And yes! That controller looks awesome and every video I could find praises it. That's why it's so tough haha

Hi! Sorry to bother you again! I have just one more question!

I did a lot of research and ended up deciding on this this monitor (thanks again for your help - I did more research and found out my PC definitely can't handle 144 Hz)

I was wondering if I needed a special HDMI splitter/adapter to set up the dual monitors. I want to extend the screen (as opposed to duplicating it), and I wasn't sure if I could connect ONE monitor via VGA and the other via HDMI, or if I need an HDMI splitter (and if so, some say they don't extend so I wasn't sure if there's a specific one for extending).

It’s a 24” 75 hz 1080p. The viewing angle is solid when it’s horizontal but vertical like this it’s very narrow just FYI. Idk if you plan on doing it vertically.

Thanks for the response. I was thinking about getting the ASUS VG245HY, in your opinion this doesn’t work? https://www.amazon.com/VG245H-inchFull-Console-FreeSync-Adaptive/dp/B01JGYM5H6

That monitor is 144hz which is unnecessary on a PS4 which is only 60hz so you’re paying extra for a feature you won’t use. This one or this one are better deals.

I believe my current one is this https://www.amazon.com/VG245H-inchFull-Console-FreeSync-Adaptive/dp/B01JGYM5H6 and it's all I know, however definitely would like to upgrade to a 1440p monitor with a higher refresh rate!

This is what they were using for the CWL. If you're planning on getting a PS5, I'd try getting atleast a 2k monitor.

HDMI is digital only so it has to be converted into analogue signal to be output as VGA, there are some cables that do this with the hardware built into it.

I'd just buy a cheap 1080p monitor with HDMI like this which has input lag of around 6ms.

According to rtings the KU8000 has an input lag of around 20ms, if your monitors are quite old your better off buying something new.

Is it its own separate system from the router and stuff or is it like a subunit? Also, are there any links to good ethernet. I was thinking about one of these monitors

I'm an Asus fan, so don't have any experience of other brands - but THIS one looks very stylish and has AMD free sync -

You are under no obligation to follow the order of monitors I placed down here. You need to check for yourself if these have any and or all of the features you are looking for, i.e. stands that have adjustability, Display Port (for future proofing), speakers, etc.

Good luck.
