Sorry everyone, I’m pretty confused now. I need an SD card reader, 3 USB ports & was looking at this usb c hub from amazon to purchase as it comes with an hdmi port already. If I plug this usb c hub I’ll still have an additional 2 USB ports and still have my hdmi port free. So if I buy this, have my laptop plugged in & my HDMI cable plugged from my hub to monitor, my g14 will go to heaven? Sorry, I’m somewhat new to this whole usb c port and would appreciate any feed back!!

Yes you should see quite a significant difference in speed. Since you say that you don't know much about this, and that your mid-2012 MacBook Pro is slow, I assume you must be on a mechanical HDD with 4GB RAM. In this case, you will see a TREMENDOUS difference in everything you possibly do on your MacBook, from opening apps to starting up the MacBook, everything will feel faster because of the faster memory.

The one thing I think you might miss is the port selection. On the mid-2012 MacBook Pro, you have a pretty decent selection of ports, like USB 3.0, Ethernet, mini-DisplayPort, 3.5mm Headphone jack, etc. On the new MacBook Air, all you get are USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 ports. So, in order to get the same level of port selection and functionality as the 2012 MacBook, you might want to consider picking up a dongle like the following:

Besides that, enjoy your new MacBook Air. If you've been using the same MacBook since 2012, without upgrading any of the components, you seem to be overdue for an upgrade. The new M1 chip is pretty powerful, so all your work should get done faster! :)

A Thunderbolt dongle has everything you usually need, including a display out, from only one Thunderbolt/USB-C port. If your laptop has a Thunderbolt port, that is. It can't just be any random USB-C port.

Usb-c to HDMI adapter will work just fine. Usb-c is so versatile, you could get a small docking station that plugs into USB-c and then have multiple monitors and USB ports and lan and anything your heart desires.

lol yeah ports are good, but USB C docks are clean. I use this one. It's only $25, there is a bit of coil whine, but it gets the job done.

$25. Works fine. I have it attached to the backside of my monitor with double-sided tape. I use the USB slots on it for my webcam and a 64gb memory stick. Considering moving it to a different spot to make the slots more accessible, but I was going for clean.

Yes, it's possible. It's probably going to suck though... You won't find the VBUS and RTN wires too bad, they're 26AWG connectors in most of these USB C cables, but you're going to be hating life when you do the D+ and D-, unless you've got a pretty steady hand with an iron. I don't remember the exact guage, but I remember them being pretty fine, and I work with fine wires regularly.

I am using this HDMI cord for one monitor and a VGA cable that came with the monitors for the other.
