maybe a usb hub switcher like this one would be good?

Sure! My monitors have dual inputs (DVI and DisplayPort), and when I switch machines I just hit a shortcut menu button I have saved that lets me switch between those inputs. Or, I'll just leave it on AutoDetect and let it switch on its own when one machine goes to sleep and the other wakes up.

My mouse, keyboard, webcam, and audio adapter are (a UGREEN USB3.0 4-port switcher)[https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Selector-Computers-Peripheral-Switcher/dp/B01N6GD9JO] that works fantastically. One side goes to my rig, the other goes to my ThinkPad dock. So yeah, a couple of clicks to get switched over but it's a better solution IMHO than buying a proper KVM and having yet another box sitting on my desk.

Not pictured here but behind my Sony speakers I have a USB peripheral switch. The one I’m using is this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6GD9JO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TzTuFb71TA390

For display connection I’m using the built in monitor switch!

I use a USB Switch and 2 different monitor inputs. That means that I need 2 button pressed to switch between my Laptop and Desktop.

I still manually switch the monitor, but the monitor allows me to assign a button on the io for easy switching. Still feels like a hassle though!

Nice setup by the way.

I don't know if this would be elegent enough for you, but I have the CRG9 and I'd imagine it's roughly the same.

I just bought a USB 3.0 KVM Switch that I just have mounted to my desk for my Mouse Keyboard and Speaker, and the monitor has multiple inputs.

So I just switch the kvm button every time I switch the input in the monitor. Unless you're doing it like 3 times an hour, it works great for me.

I use a USB 3.0 switch for input and webcam, and then for display I have a dell 2k 144hz monitor that I switch from DP (gaming machine) to HDMI (MacBook thunderbolt Dock).

I could not find a KVM switch that does 144hz so gave up on that idea.

Sound goes through HDMI and DP into the monitor and is output to speakers hooked into the Monitor audio out.

No problem! In my setup I currently have this USB switch: https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Selector-Computers-Peripheral-Switcher/dp/B01N6GD9JO

My mouse, keyboard and a USB hub are connected to this switch and it has two USB outputs, one which is plugged into my PC and one that I can plug into my work laptop and then switch between those devices. My headset however is plugged directly into whichever device I am currently using because I cannot plug the headphones into the switch since they have no USB. Therefore, my question is if I could just buy a dac/amp combo, connect the headphones and mic to that and then connect the USB output into the switch. I feel like connecting literally all my peripherals + headset via a single USB port like that might not be a good idea. If you don't know, no problem! Maybe someone else knows.

Similar idea, but it's built into a USB hub. I think it has 2 special controller ports and 5 normal USB, and bolts onto the bottom of the MiSTer just like the official hub. Uses HDMI connectors for the controller ports. I wonder if you could use a HDMI switch to have a whole bank of inputs instead of just two.

Might actually be able to do your SNAC idea with just a few SNAC inputs, one SNAC board, and a USB switch. Something like this could probably have 4x controller ports and output to one SNAC board.

Do you really need built in KVM?

I use this USB sharing switch and it works perfect. At the touch of a button on the switch, my mouse and keyboard are on a different computer. It has 4 ports, I can share flash drive and other usb peripheral as well.

The USB ports on the G9 are only connected to one device and don't switch. Your best bet would be a USB switch. I haven't used it, but this one will switch 4 USB 3.0 device between two PCs. I'm looking at getting one and a Mac mini M1 once it supports 5120x1440.

There is also a cheaper version that only does USB 2.0, which would probably be sufficient for a keyboard and mouse.

Laptop connected to monitor via HDMI. PC via DisplayPort. Keyboard, mouse, and headphones are connected to a USB hub that has switchable outputs.

I'm using this, but I'm sure there are better options:

It's mounted under the desk with double sided tape. I also tried using synergy but ended up preferring a physical switch. Also for what it's worth, I don't perceive any input lag when I am gaming

A USB switch to make switching keyboard/mouse between your laptop and desktop and then have both the laptop and desktop plugged into the monitor via displayport and switch inputs as needed.

So basically displayport from pc to monitor (dp1) Another displayport from laptop to monitor (dp2) Keyboard and mouse to usb switch which will be connected to both pc and laptop.

Hit the button on usb switch to switch between the 2 devices.

Go to monitor OSD and switch to either dp1 or dp2 input. Never have to replug anything. With the AW3418DW you can set up the buttons as well

With the pandemic (and even before the Pandemic), I work from home. On my desk I have my work ThinkPad and a Mac mini. I switch between them using this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6GD9JO

So, I think I need to leave it with PC firmware on it. It would be nice to get the Print Screen key working on the Mac mini though.

You need a USB switch with at least 2 ports (keyboard and mouse) and 2 inputs (i.e. can be connected to one of those two devices at any given time).

If just USB 2.0 (since it's just keyboard and mouse), you can get something like this one.

If you need USB 3.0, you can get this version instead.

You could use something like a switch to swap between you PC and Macbook. I use this to switch my peripherals between each computer and the cables that come with it transmit data. I just use a small USB to USB-C adapter (it came with my Galaxy phone but you can buy a cheap one on amazon) to connect it to my Macbook.

I’m also currently looking into this, but couldnt test it since I don’t have my PC yet:

  • Mouse, keyboard, mic and headset (if all USB) connect to a USB switch as input.
  • One output of the USB switch goes to your PC.
  • The other output connects to a USB C hub (with power delivery for charging). Connect the USB C charger and HDMI cable to the hub.
  • Now connect the USB C hub to your MBP. Charger and HDMI are always connected to your laptop and you can switch mouse, keyboard etc. between your MBP and PC with the switch.

USB Switch

USB C Hub

As for the monitor: Since HDMI is connected to your MBP through your USB C hub, you can connect the DP directly with the graphics card of your PC. You should be able to switch the input from HDMI to DP or vice versa in your monitor menu.

It's kind of ridiculous and janky the way I rigged it up -- but it works and isn't too fussy. I just have to press a button and then switch my display from DP to HDMI. If I wanted to dock and undock the MBP it's a single USB-c connection.

I use this:

USB3 switch: https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Selector-Computers-Peripheral-Switcher/dp/B01N6GD9JO

A usb-c multi-function dongle with HDMI, USB 3, and power delivery/passthrough. Any will work, but I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Tiergrade-Ethernet-MacBook-Laptops/dp/B07VRZ68FJ

A USB3 hub. Again, any works, but I'm using an el-cheapo Insignia one I got from Best Buy: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-4-port-usb-3-0-hub-black/5631038.p?skuId=5631038

I have a multi-function dongle with HDMI and more type-A USB3 ports. I leave the dongle connected to the MBP since I leave it docked all the time. This could be a pain, but would be the only thing you need to plug and unplug (the dongle has power delivery.)

I have all the following plugged into either the USB switch directly or a USB3 hub hanging off the switch:

Mouse plugs into a port on the keyboard, keyboard and audio dongle plug into the monitor, monitor plugs into the switch.

I have a usb webcam, usb speakers, and yeti mic plugged directly into the switch.

When I need to change I just press the button on the switch, mash the keeb and wiggle the mouse to "wake up" the other device and switch the input on my monitor. Luckily my monitor has a joystick nub and a really fast way to change inputs.

You could probably get away with a cheaper USB-C dongle -- I've used multiple successfully. But I haven't tried any other USB 3 switches and I know that one works.

One drawback is that every once in a while either a device or one of the computers will get confused and stop working on one computer or other. Usually switching again fixes it, but worst case I've had to reboot. This mostly happens with my speakers, but the camera has gone wonky in the past, too. Very infrequent.

I actually got this setup to work- pen pressure is fine too, and theres minimal lag between switching setups. https://imgur.com/a/mUe19fc

Basically a USB 3.0 Sharing Switch Selector and HDMI Switch 4K HDMI Splitter together- the usb has my mouse and keyboard and the hdmi has an adapter to the cintiq's DVI- plug that back into the HDMI switch and connect both computers.

It actually doesnt cost that much if you got a usb 2.0 switcher, probably total for both items around 30$. It is a little roundabout though since i need to press both buttons, but definitely saves from unplugging.

This is super helpful, thanks for taking the time to reply!

Rather than going for a powered USB hub + switch, I think I'm going to go for this device, which combines the 2 into 1:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6GD9JO/

In my case I think 4 ports is enough for sharing. I should also be able to get 5 sharable ports total if I connect the monitor's downstream like you mentioned. For some ports (e.g., controllers) I would probably only need to connect them directly to the PC (and never the Mac).

May I ask how you like the Audioengine A2+ speakers? I'm not a speaker expert but I was actually eying these because I really like how they look (wanted something fairly minimal). Also, do you use them with USB-only, and do you use any wireless functionality?

Re: the Apple AV Adapter, I was actually looking at a very similar device already and did not realize Apple made their own:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G2GJFF3

Glad to hear you use something similar. I'm not sure if I should go with this one ($27) or the Apple one ($69). I suspect they're the same functionality and one is just the Apple premium tax. The Uni one actually claims to support USB 3.0?

One more question: I think I might need/want a USB C extension cable because I would rather keep the AV Adapter out of sight of the desk. Do you have any experience here? Would this degrade the connection?

Here are two I am using. I prefer the one from StarTech because it has a button on a cable that is used for switching hosts, and uses ordinary type A to type B cables instead of the oddball type A to type A used by the Ugreen one. I have it stuck behind my desk and the button to control it is underneath my desk in a easy to reach place. The only difficulty with that is I can't see which host is selected, but it's pretty easy to figure out how many button presses it takes to get to the one you want.
