buy an ethernet adapter for the switch and connect directly, that should make the connection more stable which I imagine is what's causing the issue

this is the one you'll want to get

I've gotten cheaper ones and they didn't work. This one did its the way they are made- the switch needs a specific version if it... can't remember the tech about it

Frankly the cheapest option for you is to just use your existing Type-C to DP cable to plug your monitor directly into your laptop.

Then just use USB-A to ethernet for your internet:

Are you sure it’s the computer port and not the cable itself? If it is the computer, you will probably have to reach out to HP support since DIYing this would be tough and would require electrical engineering competency. Not worth dropping another $600 on a new machine if this is the only problem. As a workaround, you can order a “USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter” from Amazon or BestBuy that supports your high speed internet’s bandwidth. This solution would be your best bet. All the best.

This is what I use with my MacBook Pro for Ethernet: UGREEN Ethernet Adapter USB 2.0 to 10/100 Network RJ45 LAN Wired Adapter Compatible for Nintendo Switch, Wii, Wii U, MacBook, Chromebook, Windows, Mac OS, Surface, Linux ASIX AX88772 Chipset (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_eldBFbT979YB2

Like everyone else has said, pro controller is amazing. Long story short, don't get him a knock-off controller as well. I did the research and they are all either poor in quality or don't have the features the pro controller has (vibration, wireless, gyroscope, those Nintendo action figures support). It's so worth it that I have two for when friends play.

Also, if he plays online, I recommend getting an Ethernet adapter. For this, I have one that is third party, so it was way cheaper and installed with no effort. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_OH7ZEb5S2FTYG

So $13.99 (at the time of writing) is inconvenient for you?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MYT481C/

Because if it is, then you probably should have saved your money and not bought a Switch.

I bought this one back in 2017 which worked on both my WiiU and my Switch. Typically on my phone I get ~200 Mbps, but for whatever reason, even with the LAN adapter, my Switch caps at ~40. I was seeing all over the place that the official Switch one works much better than the knockoffs, but I can’t personally verify. I’m nervous about the LAN adapters ever since that heating issue

The Switch HORI LAN adapter does not work with Wiis or Wii Us because it is a USB 3.0 only adapter, and Wii/Wii U only supports USB 2.0. If you get a generic USB 2.0 adapter like this you should have no problems.

In general I would say the generic LAN adapters are better than the HORI one, since the HORI only works on the Switch, and even on the Switch, it appears to get slower speeds than the generics (I have both and have tested both as well).

Not sure. It doesn't saying anything about being compatible with the Switch, so I wouldn't count on it. I'd recommend looking for one that explicitly claims to be compatible with the Switch, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-Chromebook/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=usb+c+ethernet+nintendo+switch&qid=1590149474&sr=8-3

Might be the adapter, I recommend getting this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MYT481C?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Also I find sometimes that some ethernet ports have better connections than others so try switching the ports from time to time

Try a USB/ethernet adapter. It will at least confirm if it's the Mobo's NIC.

You have most certainly come to the right place.

My router is in my living room as well, I'm trailer trash though so it's a little less distance. I used a tape measurerer and found that I'm about 90ft away from the router. It's only worth considering wifi over wired when you're using a ~400 feet long cable, and even then they keep getting faster so it might even be worth to use one past 400ft. I bought a 100ft long ethernet cable (on sale rn) and an adapter. Make sure your parents are whoever are okay with having the cord on the ceiling or wall. It took me maybe a little more than an hour to hook up my cord along the wall. It comes with these peg things that you hammer in, they have one nail on them and they have a u-shaped thing that holds the wire in place. Some versions also come with sticky things instead of nails if your family isn't okay with you putting a bunch of holes in the wall. Make sure you don't drop any of the wall holder things because a pet or a sibling might eat them. if your family is okay with you using the nails instead of the sticky things, see how hard it is to hammer a nail into your wall. You only need to go one inch for the wall holder thing to be all the way in. And make sure you have the path for the cord planned beforehand. It cost me like $30 and an afternoon but now I have the civil rights to complain about lag. If you need any more help just ask

You can also get cheaper third-party adapters that’ll work just as well. Check out this post to learn more!

Ugreen is a popular one. I recommend opting for a USB 2.0 adapter since the Switch doesn’t even support USB 3.0

I've been using the official HORI lan adapter since I found it on clearance at a Walmart randomly. Currently they go for $30.

If you don't want to pay so much for first party, this one on amazon has a lot of positive reviews so I'd check it out https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-Chromebook/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=pd_lpo_23_t_2/139-4079997-8969305?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00MYT481C&pd_rd_r=c4795619-3a3e-4d46-989f-ec6d1f6e1404&pd_rd_w=Icl4L&pd_rd_wg=q4RUN&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=4Q2DMX00Y2AKVX902FGQ&refRID=4Q2DMX00Y2AKVX902FGQ&th=1

Which ethernet adapter is best?

Right now my three contenders are these:

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Internet-Officially-Licensed-wii-u/dp/B01N6S068R/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=nintendo+switch+ethernet&qid=1606873669&s=videogames&sr=1-3

https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-Chromebook/dp/B00MYT481C/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=nintendo+switch+ethernet&qid=1606873669&s=videogames&sr=1-4

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabit-Ethernet-Network-Adapter-Nintendo/dp/B074FTWJGQ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=nintendo+switch+ethernet&qid=1606873669&s=videogames&sr=1-5

On the first one some people said a 3.0 usb is better, on the other hand it's at 5 stars.

On the second one it's cheaper but not at 5 stars.

On the third one it's also cheaper and 3.0 but it only has 120 reviews.

Any thoughts here would be greatly appreciated.
