Yes. I noticed that when I pulled ip rhe galaxy map. I feel like I need to stand up and walk back and forth in front of that map.

I've only played for about 15 minutes so far. We'll see how it goes.

The experience was enough to sell me o. Star Wars Squadrons in VR when it comes out.

I bought this at Christmas: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ay5fFbFKD7SPM

The buttons on the throttle are super easy to figure out, they're all pretty different in feel and shape.

The buttons on the joystick are another matter though. I havent figures out their feeling yet, they're all so similar

It's like gaming back in the 90s before light up keyboards, and voice chat, where if yoy want to smack talk someone in a death match game, in your poorly lit room you needed to memorize tbe keyboard and type fast between kills.

HOTAS (hand-on-throttle-and-stick) is a setup in which you have one hand on a flight stick and the other on a throttle controller, while HOSAS (Hand-on-stick-and-stick) is using two flight sticks, one in each hand.

It took a while to acquire the toys. There’s an affordable thrustmaster throttle and stick that does the job just fine. Thrustmaster T16000M FCS HOTAS for PC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_V6LdEbGNBY4VB This is the stick I have, just a different throttle

I got my TM1600m used in December 2018 and have had slight issue with the twist issue that is fixed by occasionally unplugging the throttle USB and plugging right back in. I don't think reliability is an issue and even if It died today and I couldn't get another one for $50 used I'd spend the $118 to get a new set from Walmart.com

Edit: Walmart doesn't have any in stock (3rd parties are price gouging during a damn pandemic! Damn I hate ppl that do that!) But anyway here is a reasonably priced set from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xtzmFb12Y0HPN

You'll be safe getting the FCS HOTAS. Probably better you get use to using a HOTAS in other games. It has a bit of a learning curve imo. Not only in the use of it in games but the software.

It's probably safe to assume the most popular ones will be supported. I have a T16000M that I got a while ago for Elite Dangerous, and that's pretty much the most popular budget option AFAIK. I think the Warthog (also made by Thrustmaster) is another pretty popular pick for a higher price point.

I have the HOTAS X and found the lack of buttons a major limitation. I would highly recommend looking at the Thrustmaster T16000M and TWCS HOTAS combo. it is $139 on Amazon. I did not search elsewhere. I eventually upgraded the stick to the Warthog (since it has more buttons) and still use the throttle. https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960778-Thrustmaster-T16000M-HOTAS/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=twcs+thrustmaster&qid=1588529654&sprefix=twcs&sr=8-2

This is a fantastic stick, and you should be able to buy the HOTAS (throttle and stick) for USD $120. It's over double that price in the link I gave you. I would search your local offerup/craigslist personally

Lol using a $1000 warthog as an example might be a good way to scare people away from the idea. I got this one for $150 new and I've played 500 hours of DCS on it with no issues

T16000M HOTAS is what I wish I started with from the start. Pedals are okay but you get a rudder paddle on the throttle, and the stick has a twist axis. Was even able to fly helicopters with it, though still difficult.

It has more buttons than anything else at the lower-middle end, which you'll need for DCS especially.

Not sure where you're located, but I was able to snag a new TM Warthog HOTAS for $220 from a Micro Center, and at that price it's definitely worth it. However you do need to buy rudder pedals for that one.

DCS World on steam is great, tho it only comes with a couple planes or "modules", and you have the option to buy specific ones for a kinda hefty price. Nonetheless a great game! I strongly recommend a H.O.T.A.S., which is a joystick and a throttle. The Thrustmaster T1600 FCS is a good one in my experience, and if you have problems their customer service is pretty decent (source: I had a problem with one of my sticks and they had me show videos of it and then cut the cord and sent a new one free of charge).

  1. Define "crashed".

  2. I'd try playing with just the mouse and keyboard to start with. Mouse control is very precise and preferred by many PVP players. Though a stick is more immersive IMO and is what I use (This is what I play with).

This goes for $125 when it's in stock, usually about once a week or so. It's great quality for the price but the throttle does need some lube and the twist has been reported to fail after a while though mine is fine after 6 months. https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960778-Thrustmaster-T16000M-HOTAS/dp/B01KCHPRXA

>you may actually be better off with a dual stick set up (HOSAS - hands on stick and stick)

Genuine question, I see people talk up the HOSAS setup a ton, but I haven't really come across a post that really explains exactly why it's better, because it doesn't really make sense from where I stand to give up my throttle and replace it with another stick, but I'm hoping someone can at least make me a little less ignorant on the matter.

For the record, in case it's at all relevant, I currently run a t16000m HOTAS setup and I could not be more pleased. I especially like the little toggle flapper thing on the back of the throttle which I use to control my yaw, since I really, really dislike Z axis (twist) controls on joysticks simply because it's easy to actuate them mistakenly when performing sharp maneuvers.

The t-flight is supposed to be a solid starter kit.

For 10 bucks more you can get the t16000m with the throttle:

https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960778-Thrustmaster-T16000M-HOTAS/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=thrustmaster+t16000m&qid=1596321712&sprefix=thrustmaster+t16000&sr=8-1

Or preorder the up coming Airbus version:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/thrustmaster-tca-officer-pack-airbus-edition/904dt76970mq?activetab=pivot%3aoverviewtab

I'd watch some reviews of the different options and see what's the best value since these two come without the rudder pedals.

MSRP didn't change, bud. I'm talking about the fact that everything is out of stock, so the only available options are private sellers on amazon and other websites charging way too much. Nobody is privately selling honeycombs, they're just not available flat out.

Late sorry but this is my preferred flight stick: https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U/

It's actually better than other more expensive options in my opinion. The control isn't as precise but I challenge someone to actually prove they can tell the difference. It has much nicer construction, much better button layout, and much better button feedback.

I use it in conjunction with the FCS Throttle that comes with this kit: https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960778-Thrustmaster-T16000M-HOTAS/dp/B01KCHPRXA

I don't use the stick from that kit anymore because a) it feels bad in the hand, b) the trigger button broke (a common problem), and c) the button layout is rubbish and they feel cheap.

Can someone give me some HOTAS advice? I currently have a Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS X that is starting to fall apart after several years. I'd like to move up a step to something like the Thrustmaster T16000M FCS or the Logitech G X52. Does anyone have strong opinions about either one? Unfortunately I can't justify the more expensive setups like Warthogs.

r/StarWarsSquadrons • comment
1 points • Nalin8

Just a joystick? The VKB Gladiator NXT ($120-150)

Joystick + throttle? The Thrustmaster T.16000M ($160 MSRP)

Those are my recommendations for good hardware for under $200. Better stuff starts costing a lot more and cheaper stuff just isn't worth it. The main problem you will have is that joystick supplies are really, really low right now because Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 came out and wiped out all supply. Finding stuff in stock and at MSRP will be tough.

I have a chair similar to this, the chair arms are important for mounting the monitor arms. I used strong sticky back velcro to hold everything together

This is my HOTAS: T16000M

Two of these monitor arms attached to my arm rests

This USB 3 hub for all the connections on the chair

and a USB 3 extension cable I keep attached to my PC

I 3D printed a hook for my headset on the back, also added some clips on the monitor arms to hold my VR controllers!

I have this controller- Thrustmaster 2960778 T.16000M FCS HOTAS Controller,Black

I noticed that sometimes my ship starts accelerating out of the blue making it difficult to land. Not sure what causes it.

I wonder if people just use Joy2key rather than let this game attempt to read the Hotas inputs.

No I meant the one sold with the T16000 itself. You can see the little thumbstick above the right side of the paddle. This is my control scheme for it and I make sure to set a sort of "S curve" on the axis. I don't have some functions on here like landing gear or lights and stuff, and either hit the keyboard or use my Streamdeck for those.

T.16000M is usually recommended as a good place to start, has all the basic controls and is generally a pretty good stick (particularly for the price), and can be expanded with throttle and pedals later if desired. The stick itself comes with a very simple throttle slider (you may still prefer to use the keyboard for this at first) and twist-yaw controls, along with some particularly useful features that cheaper sticks might not include, such as an 8-way hat switch.

Welcome to the game, CMDR! Started out with a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS (Hands On Throttle and Stick). It runs about $70-80. Looks like it’s on sale right now. Not bad for entry level, but the limited buttons meant I had to bind a lot to my keyboard. Not great for VR. If you pick up a voice pack for Voice attack you can eliminate some keyboard use. It lets you bind thing like hard points or landing gears to voice commands and your ship will respond.

I just upgraded to a Thrustmaster T16000M and no longer have to use voice commands. It has a lot of 4-buttons that can have each direction bound separate.

Happy flying.
