This game is really optimized for joystick input. To be perfectly frank, I was surprised they even bothered to include mouse aim. I don't think you're going to be able to do much better. I humbly suggest: https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960773-Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=16000m&qid=1581797210&sprefix=16000m&sr=8-2#

You can replace the keyboard with a left handed joystick, bind the y-axis to the throttle and the x-axis to the turn, and the other buttons however you please.

The [Thrustmaster T.16000m] (https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960773-Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS/dp/B01MQEDEEW/) is a cool ambidextrous option.

You could try this, it doesnt have the throttle, but maybe it could work on a basic level, for $69.99:

The 3D Pro uses a twist the stick to control rudders, and it has a built in throttle lever. You can also use a keyboard to control rudder and throttle.

A 3D Pro was around $35-$40, but may be harder to find these days. A thrustmaster T16000M stick only, is $70 on Amazon. It is a better stick and should last longer, and includes a throttle slider, and twist rudder. https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960773-Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=t16000m+joystick&qid=1588528328&s=electronics&sr=1-11

Other cheap options are to use a mouse, or a Xbox controller. Not the best options though.

Yeah, the HOTAS X is a fine entry level HOTAS. Adequate is a good adjective for it.

Another option, which would position you better for future upgrades, would be to buy just the T16000M stick. It would only be a bit more than the HOTAS X, but is a much better stick and you could then buy the TWCS throttle later to make it a full HOTAS. This option would also give you more buttons to work with (16 vs. 12), which is the X's most significant shortcoming wrt to ED.

Single stick free shipping < $110, double stick < 200 with shipping, and there are a few new hotas (stick + throttle, no pedal) under $250.

I got a thrustmaster a few months ago it works really well on DCS and Warthunder I still haven’t played The new flight sim yet but I would imagine it would work well there too. Thrustmaster T16000M FCS for PC, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_XhtrFb6GZHJCP

Your two main entry level options would be the Thrustmaster T16000m at around $50 or the Logitech 3D Pro at around $30. While I call them "entry level" they're honestly all you'd ever really need for a civilian flight sim.

For Elite you might eventually want to upgrade with either a second stick or a separate throttle.

I don't know anything about playing the Descent games with a mouse, but here's a solid joystick if you're feeling particularly adventurous. Also great for D1, D2, Overload, Elite: Dangerous, probably others.

So I left this part out, but I also have used pedals to get that last axis.

I think your solution works fine but it’s a lot to do with one hand. I’ve tried mapping four directions to a hat switch on the HOTAS throttle, so you’ve got 3 axes on the left hand, and then using a twist axes to roll on the HOTAS joystick, so you’ve got 3 on the right and too.

A lot of the Star Citizen community does use two of these, however: https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960773-Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS/dp/B01MQEDEEW

There is also just the joystick version of T.16000M. T.16000M is their lowest model with magnetic (hall effect) sensors, which means it will never have noise or issues from potentiometers wearing out.

The Thrustmaster 16000M is a very good “cheap” joystick or HOTAS combo. It’s a significant step up from the cheap joysticks without breaking the bank.

Edit: it’s the T16000M.

my suggestion is two joysticks...right one controls pitch/roll/yaw, left one controls forward-backward/lateral/vertical, plus all the buttons from each. I used to play with stick and throttle but two sticks is just so much better for space sim...you'll actually be able to take advantage of the space environment and vertical/lateral thrusters. I suggest two of these which will run you $140. They are about as well built as you'll find without spending hundreds of dollars, and the grip is reversible so you can have one right handed and one left handed. There's also a two-pack option of the same stick on Amazon for a little less.

So. The throttle on that is . . . okay.
It's the stick that's really bad.
I got one of these bad boys.

Pre-Covid I got it for $40.
I used that stick with your preexisting throttle, and just flat out ignored the attached stick. It was a much better experiene.

The T16000M is a very solid bet. You get throttle and stick for...well, it was ~$120 USD yesterday but now they appear to be a bit less available.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=t16000m&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

It (the stick part) also allows you to change the left/right handedness of it, so you can use two sticks, which is what I'll be doing as I'm left handed. (stick alone) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=dp_cerb_1 The software lets you redefine the controls and movements to affect different things, it's quite versatile (my first stick arrived today....was holding off on getting another till I saw this gameplay reveal)

To be honest I don't have much experience with these myself (played TIE Fighter with a mouse way back when) but this and Elite Dangerous alone offer a lot of content for the peripherals. And having used a driving wheel for racing sims in VR, there is something magical about sitting in a virtual cockpit controlling it as you would in real life.

Thrustmaster T.16000M.

Everything cheaper is garbage. You can go with Logitech 3D and T-Flight, but it's a bad investment. If you like using a joystick, you are definitely going to want to replace them. It is better to get something better and sell if later if you don't like it, rather than mucking around with poor quality stuff.

Higher grade devices worth attention are Logitech X-56, Thrustmaster Warthog, everything from Virpil and VKB and a range of a few other manufacturers at around the same price range as those two, depending on what you are looking for more specifically at that point. If you want more info, join HOTAS discord, they will let you know what's what in great detail. Few people on reddit use flight simulation hardware enough to give a reliable advice.

I picked up a Thrustmaster Warthog, it's one of the coolest pieces of tech I own and the build quality is absurd. I combined it with a CH Products rudder, since the joystick does not have twist rudder.

This setup ain't cheap ($450 for the stick and throttle, $100 for the rudder), so my recommendation would be the Thrustmaster T.16000M. It uses super accurate hall effect sensors (like it's big brother the Warthog) rather than potentiometers. This thing will last you a lifetime. You don't really need the separate throttle, since there's throttle control on the base of the stick.

Another benefit of the T16000M is that it's ambidextrous. A lot of people are starting to use dual-joystick setups for Star Citizen, which looks like a ton of fun. This thing would give you a path forward, should you want to get deeper into this hobby. ;P

I'd spend the extra ten bucks to get the T16000M.

https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960773-Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS/dp/B01MQEDEEW

I run dual stick with both. The Logitech stick has an awful deadzone and doesn't work well for any sort of precision. It has a few more buttons on the stick, which is nice, but I overall do not recommend it.

You probably need a joystick. I one of these

https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960773-Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=FCS+hotas&qid=1592671197&sr=8-2

https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960778-Thrustmaster-T16000M-HOTAS/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=FCS+hotas&qid=1592671197&sr=8-1

All you need is the stick really. But if you want to get the throttle too you'll probably enjoy that aspect of it all.

You'll also need some patience setting things up. Might take you a few minutes to figure out how to bind things. However once you're setup you're good.

Probably going to go back and replay this myself now lol...

T.16000M is usually recommended as a good place to start, has all the basic controls and is generally a pretty good stick (particularly for the price), and can be expanded with throttle and pedals later if desired. The stick itself comes with a very simple throttle slider (you may still prefer to use the keyboard for this at first) and twist-yaw controls, along with some particularly useful features that cheaper sticks might not include, such as an 8-way hat switch.

Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 came out. Picked up a TMS 16000m fsc (just the stick) on an auction for $50 a couple months ago, and managed to get a CH pedals from an auction too.

The auctions were Amazon returns and basically new in box, and thankfully both work perfect.

Best option right now is watch for holiday sales or Craigslist which I've seen full sets on as well.

Eventually I'd like to get a throttle like this

I actually use the pedals for steering in naval, so I can free my left hand for other buttons when in a blue water ship (because they take an hour to turn) and toyed with using the toe forward / back axis for naval throttle but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped.
