Sorry for the late response about the walls! I got them on amazon and so far, the buns have not tried to chew them at all. Here’s the link it’s around 20ish square feet of space and very high for anyone wanting to use them for a fully enclosed space.

I got it on Amazon last summer! I purchased it used and slightly damaged and saved a TON of money that way, and it works great! Just tall enough for them to not reach the top, unless there's something close by to jump off of.

Tespo Pet Playpen. Thoughts?
I’m considering getting some new little babies soon and I would LIKE to keep them in the same room as my sisters guinea pigs, who are in desperate need of a cage upgrade anyways. I stumbled across this as being used to house guinea pigs and even as a rattie Playpen, but I want to hear from all you rat parents what you think of this product and how well it’ll keep the rats away from the guinea pigs during playtime? Thank you in advance!

Same situation as you! I don’t leave them unattended even in the pen since I’m afraid. This is the pen I have used for about a year!

Rabbit playpen: Plastic vs Metal?
Hi all!
I will soon be moving into an apartment and I will need to have my rabbit in a playpen while I am not home during the day (he'll free roam while I'm there). I currently have the metal kind and it's - you know- not as pretty as those plastic panel ones. However, my biggest concern would be that my bunny could more easily knock the plastic ones down (also just trying to minimize my plastic use). I have a 3ft one right now as well and unfortunately my bun just learned how to jump over it, so I'll have to cover the top with a wire pen of sorts regardless.
Thoughts? What has been your experience?

I'd suggest the 28" tall version. My boys would easily jump out of the 17" pen.

here is where i got it on amazon! You can actually turn the walls on their vertical side to make them taller, it shortens the space but its a fix! The company sent us the connecters and enough zip ties to make sure the middle and bottom had double ferret-proofing (which was needed). It also had stickers that are supposed to keep it in place on the floor.... but those were not ferret proof. They don't seem to be able to dig under the pen anyways since the pen sides are flexible and just slide out lol

I bought one of these and they have been great. I have them vertical, so they are too high for mine to jump. I make sure to keep things away from the walls so they can’t climb anything. Expensive, but I was so sick of cardboard. They’d always chew it/pee on it. And it’s ugly. These things just get zip tied together and can fold up great for storage!

There are various options on the market (search "plastic cord protector pet"), and they wrap around the cord tightly so there isn't space for a rat. They may still chew them, but as long as you keep an eye on them you can replace the protector before they have access to the cords. You could also potentially move the cords to above the stand (while still wrapping them in something) so it's easier to keep an eye on the rats around them.
You mentioned looking for a plastic wall - some people use playpen panels like these to block off certain areas. Note that some rats can jump over them, though. Correx is a cheaper option, but can still be chewed through easily.
A new stand is a more extreme option, but if you want to free roam them in that room and don't have another way of preventing them from getting to that space, then your options for rat proofing are limited.

Awww, cute. But, p.s.a, those small animal exercise balls, aren't good for any animal. They can easily get nails caught, their spines arch unnaturally, visibility is basically zero, & there is very little ventilation going through them. Those balls do make good beds, however, ziptied in enclosures (lids thrown away of course).
All small animals need out of cage time, safe options are:

Having had pet rats that liked to chew, the tespo plastic panel playpen was awesome.

Ours are just babies. I’ve been sitting with the in here for 30-45 minutes. It better with less in there currently. They just scurry around exploring, but they warm up to me and start crawling on me too. Eventually they poop out and will snuggle up in a blanket and allow themselves to be pet as long as they aren’t looking!

I had this for mine for a while and it worked great. I had the panels facing the taller way so there was no risk of them jumping out, however there is not actually a way to have a door without removing a panel every time but that isn’t too hard to do. It’s a little expensive, but mine have only managed to escape once.

It’s the large dog Tespo playpen. The nice thing about it is it comes with lots of panels so this could be even bigger, or a bit smaller depending on where he needs to be. tespo dog playpen

I know it’s pretty pricey, but this is what I have coming today. It’s 3,200 square inches of play space and collapsible for easy storage. You can also try to find something cheaper.

There are other options with the same panels. I got two sets because rats can jump over these. :)

I use an old sheet or cheap blanket from Walmart and place it on my bed or the floor in the bathroom.
There are playpens for small animals you can buy. But a 200 qt. Sterilite latching lid plastic tote is probably bigger. You can get them at Walmart, Target, and Home Depot.
If you want something bigger you can buy a configurable playpen made of panels. I bought this one by Tespo...

I have not set it up yet. Based on the pictures I have one concern that the panels have a small gap near the bottom.

I recently got this one, the panels are all separate so you can adjust it accordingly. Our bean was climbing over the normal baby gate we had in front of our stairs so when I got this one we stuck two panels between the gate and the bit that tightens it. They overlap so he cant pull them out and he can't climb over it anymore.

Save any card board tubes they love chewing those up. Chewing up stuff in general lol. Maybe set up a space to let her run around. I got a pet fence like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XTG94TH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to let mine play on floor.

I'm actually really liking having the third monitor on top. I'm able to have my work email client up all the time so I don't end up missing any emails and able to have spotify and slack up as well without it covering up my daily work

I'm gonna guess that it was made by the person. My dad made something similar for his/my mom's bunnies. You can buy the materials for something like this at lowes or home depot, but obviously you'd need to design and make it. If you want something functional but not as pretty, there's stuff like https://www.amazon.com/Tespo-Playpen-Portable-Plastic-Transparent/dp/B06XTG94TH

Hi, r/fosteranimals! A few people have asked about the enclosure I use. I got it on Amazon atfter noticing it in a video by kitten rescue advocate and YouTuber Kitten Lady. It's designed for small critters like rabbits and guinea pigs, but it is strong enough for kittens up to about 12 weeks. Unlike most playpens, it's modular, packs flat for stowability, and most of all, climb-proof. I'm ordering a second set so that I can build larger enclosures and have some spares.

Here’s what you do. I’m going to skip all the other stuff for now, since everyone else talked about that (eg tank, lone rat, etc). Free roam is essential. What you need to do is either invest in a playpen like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XTG94TH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_CmWEFb18RFW29
Or you need to rat proof a room, like a bathroom or something, and let him run around in that (put in some cardboard boxes and toys, too).
The other thing is, ignoring the tank - which is not a good rat enclosure, as others have already pointed out - the wheel is going to hurt his feet. Wire wheels can get toes, tails, or even feet caught and broken. It could also cause bumble foot. Also, there is nowhere near enough enrichment, especially for a lone rat who doesn’t get free roam (which are problems that won’t be solved with enrichment, just a heads up, you still need a cage mate and free roam). Things such as hammocks (a must), baskets, and foraging toys. Here’s a list of DIY toys you can easily make at home. https://www.smallpetjournal.com/diy-rat-toys/
Oh, and bedding - that kind of bedding has zero odor control and just sucks in pee. You’re going to have to either change it every 2 days or so or switch to a different kind of bedding - cardboard, hemp, kiln-dried pine, or aspen are all fantastic bedding.
But as others have said, even if you do all I said above, if you can’t get another rat, it’s probably best to give your rat back to the store. It’s just not ethical to keep a lone rat. They’re incredible social animals.
I’d also advise doing some research - this doc is not comprehensive but it’s a good starting point, you’ll want to do more (doc from r/RATS discord server) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wrT7qHfNHB22Qv9Pm5aZesH2KXhSerr-Tbc2nNlb_PQ/edit?usp=sharing

Hi! I have gotten asked a few times ,and complimented (thank you SO much), on my set up for Smudge, so I decided to share where I got everything for him!
-
Litter Box (Bought from Etsy but they now have a website)
-
White Pennant Flags (Amazon is out of stock on the one I got, but they have similar ones)
-
Toy Basket (Home Goods)
** I saved the X Pen for last because I wanted to explain why I love this thing so much... This pen is super versatile. You can zip tie the panels together to make it a permanent pen, set the panels up however you want, or use it like we do, and keep it open.
My rabbit is 100% “free roam”, but when we first started out, we were scared to let him stay out unsupervised. This pen is great for whatever step of getting to “free roaming” you’re in.
Please let me know if you have any other questions! Or if I left anything off the list you’re interested in! I’m literally obsessed with my rabbit and love talking about him and his set-up, haha.
