One of the cheapest Wifi 6 routers TPLink AX1500

Internet speeds do not matter unless you're planning to use a shadow PC.

Works great and also routes traffic better for ac devices. But sorry for offering a solution. I should just be a sarcastic asshole. Forgot, reddit.

A quarter of the price? When is the last time you looked up wifi6 routers? They're dead cheap. I got this from tplink for $80 and it has beamforming, mu-mimo and the range is great with 4 HGA's. All the config features I care for like QOS, remote control via cell phone, openvpn support and it's crazy fast and caps my bandwidth on a single wifi device.

If you find a $20 router that does all that I'd love to hear about it.

Yup! I just did this exact thing. Got my own 5GHz WiFi 6 router, plugged the ethernet that would be going into my pc into the router instead, then set the router as an "access point" instead of its own thing if that makes sense. Then I plug my PC into the new router, and my future quest 2 to the new wifi connection while the rest of my household uses the regular router/WiFi.

This is the new router I got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZSDR49S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think 90% of your problem is that Sagecom router. They're usually budget routers provided by the ISP, and typically junky. The signal on them isn't typically very good either. When my Google WiFi died, I went and picked up a cheap tp-link router from a local Walmart, and it's been pretty amazing so far.

A single Google/Nest WiFi point will definitely cover that place too, unless it's oddly shaped. I'm in a 1600sqft ranch, and both the Google WiFi, and this Tp-link router cover it with room to spare.

Both of these routers will allow you to change your DNS settings, and many more.

If you have a Quest 2, one of the best routers you can get for a good price is this one: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wireless-AX1500-Wifi-Router/dp/B07ZSDR49S/

Regarding 5ghz routers, you'll want one with a 2x2 or better antenna array (MU-MIMO) though this isn't always listed in product specifications.

Would a router like this work? I know its cheap but I really don't know the differences between them:

It's a relatively decent router from what I had read:

All my devices are ethernet, my housemates are on the 5ghz, no walls or anything between them and the router. I don't have any device priorities enabled either. Hope that helps!

WiFi 6 is more about managing interference in crowded spaces than it is speed. For people in apartments or dorms it's a big deal.

I think the TP link would be the most economical choice. You don't need much. If you bought the wifi 6, ax, router you would be all set if you ever want more speed.

Wifi 6 (802.11ax) is starting to becoming mainstream (successor to 802.11ac) so I'd recommend that tbh if you want some future proofing. Some cell phones/laptops already come with those wifi chips, and more will probably come out later this year

I had a similar problem, in that I was running a cable modem/router combo and the 5 GHz signal was dropping intermittently. I have a 200+ Mbps connection and was getting around 80-120 Mbps on the 5 GHz band around my house. So I went and picked up a relatively inexpensive, but well rated router, the TP-Link AX1500, and it broadcasts a nice and powerful signal. I now get 220-240 Mbps anywhere in my house with this one unit in a central location. I still use the cable modem/router combo unit just for the cable modem part and I have shut off the wireless part on it.

r/computers • comment
1 points • Pasq_95

Yes, you understood correctly: modem goes to router1 that goes to router 2 In my unit we are 4 people, 3 of them constantly connected because working from home. On the other floor there are 2 old people that only use one computer for easy stuff. We have one optimum contract that provides internet at 100mb, so yeah, one contract shared in all the floors. I connected my laptop to the Ethernet on my floor and made a speed test and I get up to 75-80 mb in download, so I believe there is no loss in the long Ethernet connection. I was looking at this one yesterday, what do you think? It should be wifi6, I don't know if this is any better than the one you sent https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZSDR49S/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_i_uMHVEb8JDR5WS

I recommend purchasing your own router. If you don't have TV services and you're an only internet subscriber the router world is yours to explore, just make sure you're buying a "router", not a modem or modem/router combo. Fios doesn't use Modems they use an ONT which is provided with the install and it's not charged for on your bill. If you're looking for something inexpensive and under $100 I would recommend the TP Link AX1500, it supports the latest WiFi 6 technology, has parental control supports if you need it, and it has a QoS feature for gamers. It's only $80 and it works extremely well. I'll leave a link for you to check it out.

Cool, you are likely fine with a decent triband router. I’d honestly not waste the funds ($200+) on a mesh if it’s not necessary.

Costco sells the tp-link archer c4000 for 129.99 and even that is a little overkill imho (but a decent choice at that price point)

If I were you, I’d go with something like:

TP-Link Wifi 6 AX1500 Smart WiFi Router (Archer AX10) – 802.11ax Router, 4 Gigabit LAN Ports, Dual Band AX Router,Beamforming,OFDMA, MU-MIMO, Parental Controls, Works with Alexa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZSDR49S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_dJbRFbCRH77MB

Tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router with good reviews, 79.99.

You can get a budget Wifi 6 router for under $100. It's still questionable if it's worth it upgrading to Wifi 6 just for the Quest 2 since I believe one Youtuber said that maybe it decreased the latency by a few milliseconds at most. If you have a Wifi 5 (AC) router with a 5Ghz band already I wouldn't worry about upgrading. If you don't have a wireless router at all yet... Wow.

Edit: Wifi 6 (AX) router for $80. Test your current wireless router first, if its in the same room and latency is around 30-40ms when using Virtual Desktop then it's almost certainly fine.

I've had TP Link routers before they are..decent. This one seems to have enough features to get you buy. Whether the implementation of Wi-Fi 6 is baked enough on it or any Wi-Fi 6 devices you might have, and the nature of your RF environment, you might actually get those speeds.

Best of luck with it.

With those speeds, you can’t go wrong with a Netgear CM500 and a TP-Link AX1500.

I recommend against buying an all-in-one box. Compromises are made that impact performance on both the modem and router side of things.

Yeah, that dinosaur seems to be an 802.11n, which is pretty old an not really reliable. Seems best just to get a new router.

Dont get a wireless N router, the max speed is 300 gigabits, and look for an wireless AC or AX router.

you don't need a 5ghz wifi card and a new router, if you have a router that has 5ghz wifi capability in your room and no other devices on the 5ghz connection and your PC wired to it then you'll be good. i personally had to get a new router to put in my room as an access point with its own dedicated 5ghz channel. i wired my PC up to that and it works flawlessly. from what i've read a 5ghz wifi card for your PC won't be nearly as stable.

this is the router I got but you could no doubt find a cheaper one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZSDR49S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Q2 is great with PCVR and it looks good. I use it with my 2080 Ti.

Yes, you can use a regular USB 3.1 port, don't need USB-C. I recommend going the wireless route. I know you said in a comment you don't have wifi 6 yet I'd recommend getting a router for where you plan to play (given you are open to using a cable, I gather it's where your PC is) and just have that as your Quest streaming access point. The latency will be very low and wireless is so much better than being tethered. I use this guy:

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wireless-AX1500-Wifi-Router/dp/B07ZSDR49S/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=tp+link+archer+ax10&qid=1603648443&sr=8-1

and it works amazingly well so you don't have to buy a multi hundred dollar router to do this. For me, playing via Virtual Desktop with the AX10 10-15 feet away feels like I'm playing natively so you get the best of both worlds: PC quality graphics and wireless play which is a VR game changer and how VR is meant to be played.

The negative with the Q2 is that it has a shitty black level and low contrast ratio so it will look 'blah' with dark games, like the Vader episodes. For games that aren't dark, the black level and contrast ratio aren't too big an issue.

Can anyone tell me if this is a suitable router for Virtual Desktop with Quest 2? TP Link AX10

It seems great value at the same price as the Oculus Link cable... but I guess it has has obviously cut some corners (ax1500, vs ax3000 on higher end models). As far as I can tell, that means the bandwidth on the 5Mhz band is limited to 1200Mbps, rather than the 2400Mbps on ax3000 models.

My question is, as a router that will be purely dedicated to VD, is this enough? (I saw Guy mention an increased 150Mbps bitrate, in a recent update to VD... Would that suggest that this 1200Mbps router is plenty?).

If this router is not up to snuff and anyone can recommend a good value wifi6 router (just for VD) then I'd be forever grateful! So many terms and standards!

Perhaps this Asus RT-AX3000? (Or its TUF variant which is a little cheaper in my country)

i'd actualy go one step up from that router and get the AX 1500 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZSDR49S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is wifi 6 so you get a stronger signal. With my old 5ghz router the strongest speed i could is 400mbps. With the wifi 6 i max out at 12mbps which makes a world of difference.

Just an AP or a router configured as an AP. I prefer the latter so I can possibly use the device as a router in the future.

Here's a TP- Link device with an explicit Access Point Mode:

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wireless-AX1500-Wifi-Router/dp/B07ZSDR49S

https://www.tp-link.com/us/user-guides/archer-ax10&ax1500_v1/chapter-4-set-up-internet-connection#ug-sub-title-4

Just manually set network parameters on the main router and all APs to be the same name, password and encryption type.

The c3700 is sub-par and isn't even rated for your speed tier. The Netgear AX6 is pricy and not worth it IMO.

You could radically improve your network performance with a Motorola SB6183 and a TP-Link Archer series router.

Rubbish. TP-Link AX1500 is $80 on Amazon. Netgear Nighthawk AX3000 is $166.

If you've got the WiFi hotspot working on your desktop that's great for you, but there have been plenty of people reporting problems trying to get a 5GHz hotspot working with Windows 10. Even the creator of Virtual Desktop has advised people not to bother trying this.
