Everything seems to point to your adapter being the problem. Everyone else's stuff in the home is working fine, including your phone.

It really seems like the adapter was dying, the router coincidentally got unplugged near it's final death wail, and now you think it's tied into the unplugging event. But every other piece of evidence indicates the modem and router are working fine.

I would suggest biting the bullet, and buying a new WiFi Adapter for your computer. If you are going to teach from it, I'd suggest using an Ethernet cable anyway (running across the floor if necessary) during teaching hours, as a boon to your students and a nod to being a professional. I'd even consider putting my whole teaching setup on a small table with wheels, and rolling it closer to the router so I could wire in during classes, and then moving back to be considerate to the roommates.

Alternatively, spend a bit more and get a PCI wireless adapter for your computer that has external antennas, so at least you are doing your best to get a "teachable" connection. Don't buy the cheapest USB style WiFi Adapter, buy a good one. Something like this:

So the good news is you have a couple of options. Either you can just run a wired Ethernet connection to your PC from your router or from another wireless repeater. Or you can just purchase a wireless card and install that in your PC. Most install into a basic PCIe slot, so just make sure you have enough room.

Here is an example from amazon

TP-Link AC1200 PCIe WiFi Card for PC |Bluetooth 4.2 |Dual Band Wireless Network Card (2.4Ghz / 5Ghz) | for Gaming, Browsing, Streaming etc.- Supports Windows 10, 8.1, 8 & 7 (32/64-bit) - (Archer T5E) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LAkiFbGAKNVXX

So you don't need a separate drive for your OS as you'll have plenty of space with 2tb. Unless you want to keep you OS separate for some reason ( I can't think of one).

As we've seen with GPUs and CPUs, once you get above a point (3080) you pay hundreds more for not much more performance. It's up to you but honestly you won't need it unless you really just want the top end.

You don't need a sound card unless you're doing intense audio stuff. Unless you're doing complex mixing with many audio i/os you really won't need it.

This MB doesn't have wifi. For gaming, wired is always better if available. If unavailable, you could get a $30 wifi usb dongle. Or find a wifi pci card (Like this).

I know nothing about monitors. I'd recommend some LTT on types of monitors to inform your decision.

In terms of clearance for your GPU, you should be able to find on the manufactures page the max GPU size it can accommodate.

It’s this one...

You can always buy a PCI-E WiFi + Bluetooth adapter.

something like this (just an example): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=twister_B07YY773GX?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

Here is a PCIe wifi/bluetooth card for $35 dollars.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_xwy3EbXF6WWME

The motherboard you have will have a 4x PCIe slot you can use to plug it in. Windows should recognize the card immediately, and you will have wifi/bluetooth access. Also, make sure the computer is off when you install the card. Hope this helps.

I picked up this one recently and it's been working well. If you don't have a drive to install drivers from the disk, you'll need Ethernet connected.

Edit: They have one without Bluetooth for $30.

thoughts on a bluetooth card (like this), since I suspect bluetooth is here to stay? Or are the USB bluetooth things good enough? The reviews on amazon are worrisome that they only last a short time.

Oh woah I didn’t consider that at all. So I have a wow router technicolor brand and I recently got it this feb. so the router provides a 802.11n 2.4 GHz and a802.11ac 5 GHz. So ( please correct me if I am wrong) the PCIe slot is right above the PCI where the graphics card is. I found one online that is available here and has a Bluetooth included so that might be the option I go with:

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Bluetooth-Wireless-Browsing-Streaming/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=wifi+card+802.11ac&qid=1591118274&sprefix=wifi+card+802&sr=8-6

Is there anything else I should be careful of? Honestly this is so helpful thank you for taking time to answer my questions and explain things in detail.

any would be fine probably, just check out the reviews! I picked up the tplink ac1200 at Micro Center for my first build. this is the one, it’s for wifi and bluetooth 4.2: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_H.NdFb72WW422

commonly they’ll go in one of your PCIE slots, there are usb ones but as far as i know they don’t have as much range as PCIE

Yes, you will need a wifi card. And if you want bluetooth, you’ll need to buy a wifi card that supports it. Unless you already have a wifi 6 enabled router (unlikely, they’re pretty new) I would recommend this: TP-Link AC1200 PCIe WiFi Card for PC |Bluetooth 4.2 |Dual Band Wireless Network Card (2.4Ghz / 5Ghz) | for Gaming, Browsing, Streaming etc.- Supports Windows 10, 8.1, 8 & 7 (32/64-bit) - (Archer T5E) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_..SmFb3Y4GKNR

This is the one I use, you don't need a drivers update, it has Bluetooth built-in. Literally just stick it in your bottom PCIe slot and you're done, the whole process takes less than a minute, you don't even need to restart your computer.

edit: I would personally avoid getting a USB wifi dongle if you can, oftentimes you can have connection issues and lag depending on the brand.

Since you're on a desktop PC a PCI WiFi card is best. They last longer and are of generally better construction. But you have to install it physically, which isn't hard at all.

Hmm well theres a couple things you could do, but if your ps4 is anywhere close to your pc id thing you just had a really terrible network chip in there. I’d try just buying a new network card first, maybe plugging a signal booster in there too. Couldn’t hurt to do both.

Try something along these lines, theres usb ones too but if you don’t want to waste a slot I highly recommend pcie. Make sure you toss the antenna on there for max results.

This is good, but it would be better to get something like this with the long WiFi card instead of the stubby card. The long card is an M.2 and the stubby one is miniPCIE. It doesn't matter now, but the ones using M.2 can be upgraded to WiFi 802.11ax down the line.

HDD: Pretty much any 7200rpm hdd from WD or Seagate is fine

AIO: I recommend at least a 240mm if going with an AIO, single fan ones are a waste of money IMO, unless you need it in a cramped tiny case.

WIFI/BT Card: Something like this should be fine

Edit: Also I second the other comment, you're going that far anyway, just get everything new. A 2004 build is not something you upgrade, in all honesty it's something you replace.

It does not. You can still have Bluetooth capabilities if you use an adapter, such as this, or you can get a Bluetooth card that connects to and expansion slot on the motherboard itself, such as this.

PCIe wifi cards have less latency and have higher speeds than USB wifi adaptors, and of course ethernet is much more stable than either. I am also a very new pc builder and when I was looking into wifi cards I found the two below before settling on ethernet.

cheaper wifi card

faster wifi card

Board has a M.2 Key E for a 2230 WiFi/BT modules. You'd need to buy that module plus external antennas.

Do can also buy a PCI bracket with everything together: Example: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Bluetooth-Wireless-Browsing-Streaming/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=wifi+pci+adapter&qid=1597518139&sr=8-4

Or a USB WiFi adapter.

Seems odd, for Asrock to offer a M.2 Key E slot, but no WiFi bracket for antennas.

PCIe WiFi card Any will do, but gaming ones have better bandwidth. You only need just above the internet bandwidth you pay for, or as low as you're comfortable with.

I'll edit in a bit with links

Edit: links

TP link, Bluetooth and wifi dual band. 2.4Ghz up to 300Mbps, 5Ghz 800+ Mbps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ta7aFbCM0YPW1

ASUS, Bluetooth and wifi dual band, brags a 1Gbps+ bandwidth. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F42V83C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bf7aFb61ZE830

Either will work if you have an open PCIe slot (most peeps do) GL shopping

OP's card is currently on a limited time sale for $35, normally $40. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JPFKQ5/

This highly rated AX card is $23, and has a 5% off coupon on that page:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082NZYDDM/

For the same $30 - $40 price range, there's dozens, if not hundreds of AX cards available from different brands.

The M.2 module is what matters, and the Intel AX200 is the only AX one on the market.

The M.2 AX200 is generally at least $15-$17.

The M.2 RTL8812AE (in the TP-link T5E) is readily available starting at $7.

With an $8-$10 M.2 Key E to PCIe adapter, you can make your own WiFi card identical to T5E for half the price.

The best bet at this point is to try a different card or wire up. I'd recommend maybe moving away from the USB models and try an internal PCIe card. Just make sure that the back of your PC is not obstructed by a wall/desk/or whatever.

Give it a good Line of Sight to your wireless router.

Here is the build I would recommend for your use case. Everything will be able to run optimally. It comes out to 853 but with a wifi (unless you're just using ethernet but heres the link to one that looked good: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Bluetooth-Wireless-Browsing-Streaming/dp/B084JPFKQ5/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=wifi+pcie&qid=1606755164&s=electronics&sr=1-4) will add 40 and if you want windows that will also be \~105. Overall, it should stay on budget. If you would like me to explain any of the reasoning behind the parts just leave a comment below and I'll be happy to respond! Also, if anyone else sees this and would recommend something different in my build, do let me know. Anyways, I hope this helps! Best of luck on your PC.
