It may have shorted and broke it, but it is not something that SHOULD happen just by unplugging a cable. So if it is broken don't be hard on yourself.

If you have another computer (laptop) with an ethernet port, try that on the same cable. If that doesn't work then it may not be your PC.

If it is broken you may be able to get work done under warranty and such. But honestly if it is broken the most convenient solution is to just throw in a cheap PCIe ethernet card example

Couple other things you could try

Check the pins inside the port to make sure they arent bent or dirty

Download the driver directly from the manufacture of the network adapter. Not Asus or msi, but either realtek, broadcom or intel ect...

Also to your edit, you dont need a fancy intel branded nic card. Unless you want to, This tp link one will work the same at half the cost https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet-supported/dp/B003CFATNI

Well if you have an open PCI Express slot

I think they sell NIC cards that go into PCI slots for pretty cheap.

Reset your NIC settings on your PC, then try again.

If that doesn’t work, get a new NIC, they’re dirt cheap.

You should have the option in the bios, of not you can always leave the onboard disabled in windows.

We use these in work, pretty good price and good reliability.

I haven’t used one myself but this is a PCIe Ethernet card. https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet-supported/dp/B003CFATNI

The strix cards are huge but I think that motherboard is ATX so you should have a free slot for an add in card.

I’ve recently upgraded from a Z97 4590 DDR3 to X570 Ryzen 3600 DDR4 and while I’m pretty happy overall with the performance bump, I upgraded when parts were in stock and at prices close to all time lows.

If I had to deal with the current levels of price/stock bullshit, in your place I’d just look into getting that 15$ Ethernet card and upgrading sometime in 2021.

Couldn’t you install a new network interface card? Like this one

You mean like a PCIe lan card? Like this? https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet-supported/dp/B003CFATNI

If so yeah it should work just fine.. but do you really want to use a PCIe slot if you can just exchange the board? Or is it that you just don't want to have to take everything apart and put it back together? I get it though.. it's your choice and good luck

Is there a big difference? Is this one good?

Maybe get a new gigabit Ethernet card for your PC:

Here’s one.

If you don’t like that brand there are many, many more options.

At this point you just have to assume it's a physical problem with the ethernet port on the PC. Somewhere along the line, transporting to/from the pawnshop or the handling at the pawn shop, something caused it to stop working.

That leaves you with the option of installing a PCI-E card like this TP-Link or a USB ethernet adapter.

If you have the latest BiOS for the motherboard, and you know that your cable and router is fine, that means it must be a bad board, or bad software on the board.

PCIE Network cards are great. Here's a dirt-cheap one that I can personally recommend: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet-supported/dp/B003CFATNI/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1& you'll probably cap at around 900-950mbps on that. If you install that and are still getting packet loss, it's an issue with the network. I HIGHLY doubt it's a software issue in this case.

I noticed you were pinging Google though. That's not good practice to test for local network packet loss. Ping your router, and see if you have packet loss. You can find your router's IP address by typing: ipconfig in the command prompt and finding "default gateway". If there is NO packet loss to the default gateway (your router) but there is to Google, it's an issue with your internet connection/router.

Try swapping cables between the two machines. If you have a crappy cable, you can have more bit errors and it will drop your effective rate.

The only other thought is that your network card is old or crappy. HERE is a cheep USB Ethernet adapter to try if that doesn't work. HERE is a cheep PCIe network adapter.

I highly recommend pfSense, it can definitely handle the bandwidth. I guess the right answer depends on your budget and willingness to spend a few hours installing and configuring.

Here’s the setup I used. I’m running Hyper-V with a few other VMs hosted - you likely won’t need as much hardware if you’re only planning to run pfSense.

Help. Bluetooth unstable. (Ubuntu 20.04)

Ubuntu/Linux noob here and first time posting here. Recently I did my very first computer build with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as my OS (specs linked below; if anyone asks I did use the stock cooler from AMD which is why there is no CPU cooler listed here). I bought a wireless and wired network adapter not included on the specs list.

Wired: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CFATNI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Wireless: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XM6XZ1F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The wireless adapter out of the box works flawlessly when it comes to wi-fi connection, no driver installation necessary. The issue comes with Bluetooth that's included with it. As I'm typing right now, my Bluetooth is working. But earlier, the troubleshooting just took forever and I'm still worried about my issue happening again.

See when I was trying to fix my Bluetooth, it was connecting to my headphones technically. But every time I so much as move my head at a different angle, it would break and no sound would come through until I moved my head back to the original position. Even my shoulder touching my headphones caused issues until I put it back in its original place.

  1. I started off with Stack Overflow to see if anyone was having these issues. I tried all the ones I could find but it wasn't working or the solution they gave was already applied (for ex: they would say update kernel version when it was at the correct version already or they would say to ensure bluez and pulseaudio was installed when it was) yet it was still having issues.
  2. There is a USB connection you must make to a 9 pin USB header on your motherboard in order for Bluetooth to be enabled. I opened up my case to see maybe the connection was loose. I secured it in place and tried again. Nope.

Then my problem solving resulted in me turning Bluetooth and my headphones on and off again plus rebooting over and over again and also unplugging the USB connection as described in 2) and plugging it back in. I did this for at least 30 minutes then presto, it finally connects and I can move my head and body freely with no issues which is where I'm at right now. Now it seems silly for me to type when my solution is solved right?

Well, let's just say that not only did this scenario happen just now before I'm writing this post, but it also happened last night. After I had solved it last night and it was connecting with no issues, I was thinking oh great it's fixed perfectly. No, I had to troubleshoot it the same way again. Call me amateur, but I really doubt my solution is really practical every time this happens. Plus, even now as I show in another image (also linked below), Bluetooth on Ubuntu registers my headphones (ATH-ANC700BT) as 'Not Set Up' even though I'm listening to music perfectly right now. I don't think my headphones are the problem because they connect to my Laptop which uses Windows without problems.

I'm sorry if I said a lot and/or included too much information. I don't know what I'm supposed to mention when it comes to this. But I'm really just trying to get to the bottom of my issue. I'm completely new to Ubuntu. I'm continuously trying to find solutions online, but right now I don't even wanna touch the Bluetooth settings as I'm afraid I may go back to square 1. Any help would be appreciated.

Try replacing the ethernet cable, if anything just to rule it out.

If your ethernet adapter failed, you will need a replacement. A PCIE card is best, but if you want a portable tester, that is also good to have. Here are links to both:

Assuming the motherboard has a spare/free PCIe slot, either of these for fifteen bucks would do the trick. Or something equivalent from a local Office Depot or Best Buy.

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet-supported/dp/B003CFATNI

https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DGE-560T-Gigabit-PCI-Express-Control/dp/B0007NWM1U/

Before you install it, if you go in the CMOS/BIOS settings and disable the onboard port it will avoid confusion over which is which later.

Was I an idiot for buying this? It looks like it only allows wired internet connections not wireless, and it looks like the motherboard I got supports wired connections anyway

Any suggestions for a good adapter that allows wireless connections?
