About to buy a light (SF-1000), any bright ideas?

I am thinking about buying this but I'm new to LED lights. Is this currently a decent deal for a small-scale grow light? Any better comparable options you would recommend instead? I am working with a brute or a small tent.

It honestly depends on your tent size, man. Different lights have different coverage and ppfd ratings. This light can cover up to a 2x2 area with great yields. The 4000 version is more expensive at $530 on Amazon, but it will cover up to a 5x5 with amazingly even spread. (The sf2000 is the mid range light for up to 3x3 coverage. Not sure the price. 2 sf2000 are better than one sf4000, and same goes for sf1000 to sf2000. Better coverage and more mobility with more lights. But get a quantum board!

Well a 2x4, you can do 2 decent size plants. With training and topping you can yield up to a qp per plant.

I would really recommend a qb260 R spec or similar type that you can use in both veg and flower cycle. But that does exceed your budget by about $100.

If its a entry Hobby I would say start with 2 plants. And maybe use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07TS82HWB/ref=sspa_mw_detail_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Its more of a 3x3 light, but you could use it in a 2x4.

Perhaps someone else has some input also.

Claims to replace a 1000 watt MH/HPS light, yet only powerful enough to cover an area of 2x2 feet for flowering? Something doesn’t add up here. A 600 watt HPS is strong enough to cover 4x4 for flowering very light-intensive plants, and a 1000 watt traditional/old school light will do much more than that. These other lights are also on sale right now on Amazon in several sizes for half the normal price and feature the newest/most efficient LEDs.....

We get ours from Crescent Electric! You’ll either have that or a Steiner in your area, call them up and ask if they have plug and play led tubes that do not require a ballast. Get 2-3000k,2-4000k,3-5000k. Gut them and fasten them to some kind of structure and wire them bad boys up! OR

just do this 😝

Trying to understand exactly what I'm looking for in lights.

I have a 300w (135w actual) viparspectra. How does this compare to boards like these? The ones in the link are 75w per board I believe, but for this example, let's pretend they're 60w each. Would two of those boards totaling 120w be better than my viparspectra 135w? Is there a better metric I should be going by when it comes to boards?

Edit: looking at the spider farmer sf-1000 on amazon. These use the Samsung LM301Bs I see mentioned on here a lot. Power draw is 100w. Is it still better than my 135w viparspectra?

I know I'm going to be bombarded with Alibaba recommendations, but, full transparency, I have $300 Amazon bucks after the holidays and I'd like to not have to use cash to pick up some new lights - but only if I'm actually getting something of value. I'm just not understanding if these are decent boards or just the same thing as blurples with a QB skin.

If it matters I'm in a 2x2x4 rn, and may expand to a 2x4x4 in the near future.

Here are the fans, I didn't want to hassle with weird power cord inputs so I got USB fans instead, which I very much regret because they definitely don't have enough power to move lots of air, especially through the carbon filters.

For lights, I got the SF-1000, I'm thinking I could turn the brightness down a bit to help with the temps, but then I'm losing out on light which I'm really not a fan of.

Build is inside of a 55g barrel, lined with reflective insulation, which again is probably not helping temperatures. Gotta decide if the trade off from more light is worth it, and right now its not looking great. Gonna have one 5 gal fabric pot in there with a an automated fanned spray dripper for watering once complete.

You can use that bulb to sprout a seedling. It is not suitable to grow a plant. This is a proper light. You need a blower/filter.

A user review of the Spider Farmer SF600 said that pointing a fan at the light was a good idea since it gets a little hot. What you're saying makes sense though so I should probably move it down to blow across, huh?

I actually have a question about light as well. I was going to pop another Sf 1000 in there but now I'm looking at a Viparspectra VP 2000 that looks great. This is the one https://www.ledgrowlightsdepot.com/products/viparspectra-vp-series-vp2000 and here's the Spider Farmer https://www.amazon.com/Spider-Farmer-Dimmable-MeanWell-Spectrum/dp/B07TS82HWB which one would you recommend adding? I'm planning on taking the CFLs out once I get a bigger light.

I really appreciate the genuinely helpful and thoughtful feedback, I can tell I'm going to get some great help here and feel totally safe to ask questions here. You're building what's quickly becoming my favorite sub.

Running 4 CFL 5000k 60w bulbs, buckets are lined with reflective tape. One fan on the lid, wholes drilled through the side for ventilation.

Is that enough light? I'm hoping it is for veg before I move to the brute I'm gonna build. Also looking for recommendations on led lights off Amazon. Trying to stay under $200

I'm assuming you have a small grow space? Here's a perfect light for a 3x3 or smaller space, that is only $169. But with that $169, you can produce 2 oz or more per harvest, so it will pay off pretty much immediately.

This super soil concentrate mixed according to instructions with Fox Farms ocean forest

Organic Super Soil Concentrated Strength https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079TC27PZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6dhWEb44WZ475

I de-chlorinate my water before using, don’t ph, it’s around 7ish from the tap, but I don’t adjust because it’s my understanding I don’t have to because of the organic super soil and if I did it would hurt the microbes in the super soil. PPM is low for my tap water so I think my water is fine.

I thought it was light burn at first and so I’ve moved my light higher, it’s now 24 in or so, but doesn’t look to have resolved it.

I’m about to enter flower, so trimmed all the previously damaged leaves but now more are starting to look damaged.

It also looks like nute burn because of the yellow tips. But at the same time nute deficiency cause the discoloration and damage to the leaves.

Any ideas?

It's hard to shop around for LED lights when the info for many of the cheaper ones is complete bullshit.

Also, you may still be within the return window for your light, if you want to get something else. The white LED, QB-style lights or autoCOBs are a bit more expensive, but MUCH better than any of the lights with a mix of colored LEDs.

I have a 2x2 tent and use the predecessor to this 135W HLG QB288v2 rspec kit. There are cheaper, relatively comparable options (1, 2) which others here could compare. The HLG QB board is excellent.

Some quick options to span through price for you to compare, spider farmer 1000, Mars Hydro 1000, Vivosun, and MAXISUN.

Personally I would go with Spider Farmer, second choice is Vivosun. I like the Vivosun fabric bags. Price and quality seem good, I went with 7 gallon. Happy with my choice maybe I would go with 10 gallon if I could do it again. I am only growing like 1-2 at a time.

Pretty much anything of quality is going to be better than your light with Epistar LEDs (not trying to be a jerk here). Your light is going to have a PPE (photosynthetic photon efficacy) of around 1.3 umol/joule (amount of photons created per watt-second of energy). Quantum boards with Samsung LEDs are going to be well above 2.0 umol/joule.

A 20 gallon bucket has a diameter of 19 inches or about 2 square feet or about 0.2 meters^2. Your light has a PPE of 1.3 umol/joule at 140 watts for a PPF of 182 umol/sec. 182 * 5 = 910 which is roughly the light intensity (PPFD) averaged in umol/m2/sec. That's enough light.

You would want about 80 watts of Samsung LEDs to get the same light intensity at a PPE of 2.3 umol/joule.

This light kit does it and a lot more at a lower cost:

This light will do it and then some at about the same price as your light when also buying the driver:

This COB will put out about as much light as yours but run cooler:

This board would rock your bucket:

What I would not do is spend $300 on a wifi gimmick app light when you can spend 1/2 that or less.
