Very good speakers especially for this price, but they do lack bass power so a sub will help them out alot. A good stereo amp to pair these with that easily recommendable is the sony STRDH190 100wpc amp .

Given your setup, you can use any kind of mixer/receiver you'd want that sits between your turntable and your output options (speakers, headphones, etc.)

The options are pretty endless. This model, for example, gets Wirecutter's stamp of approval: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078WFDR8D/?tag=thewire06-20&linkCode=xm2&ascsubtag=AwEAAAAAAAAAAatF

The fact that it has built-in bluetooth connectivity would be a plus since I think it increases your options if you ever wanted to use it with bluetooth headphones or speakers.

Thanks!

(IMO) The cheapest receiver that's decent and has a phono input for your grandfathers presumably older turntable is this Sony STR-DH190 - $150. It has more than enough power and wont blow up your speakers.

Sorry to hear about your granddad. It's nice that you have these incredible speakers to help you remember him though.

So - this is what I bought on a suggestion from someone over at r/turntables: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH190-Stereo-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B078WFDR8D/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1T5551IYZQ1K9&dchild=1&keywords=sony+str-dh190&qid=1601673919&sprefix=sony+st%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-2

Since I said I wanted a budget option for listening with speakers, plus needing headphones for late at night. This has a built in phono stage, so you don't need a separate preamp. Some people on this subreddit also have retro receivers, as some people believe older receivers will get you a better sound. I'm not at liberty to say anything about that, I'm not audio expert haha, but this Sony receiver sounds great to me.

The Sprout 100 is 100 watts into 4 ohms, it's only 50 into 8 ohms, both the LS50 and RB42 are 8 ohms. They are also both Class D amps, The Sprout would really just be a more refined, up-scale version of what you already have. If you want big room-filling Bass from a bookshelf speaker, you aren't going to do much better than the RB42 unless you spend a whole lot more on something like a Buchart S400. I would keep the RB42s util you can try the with an A/B amp with <80 watts per channel into 8 ohms... something like this: If you still don't like it, then invest in Floor-standing speakers.

Awesome! This is great info thank you. Woild I need to get a stereo amp with eight or four slots to put the wires in? Also will I need a ground?

I’m on mobile. Please forgive formatting issues.

The amplifier I picked was the Sony STRDH190 2-ch Home Stereo Receiver with Phono Inputs & Bluetooth. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078WFDR8D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I got a little dongle for my pc so with that I can switch over and play music from my pc too if I want. The turntable can go directly into the receiver or you can add an external preamp if you want.

Just ordered Beyer DT 770 80ohm and AKG 371 to test out. Gonna keep 1 and return 1. With that being said, is my Sony STRDH190 going to be enough to power either of these headphones? I'm mainly listening to vinyl with this set up every now and again I'll be streaming from Spotify but always through the receiver.

If I need an amp, do you have a couple of suggestions? Not trying to break the bank on the amp.

What country are you in? What’s your budget for an amp? Do you want to connect anything else - pc, console, smartphone?

The Sony STRDH190 seems like good value in the US.

For speaker wire you usually don’t need banana plugs, it’s a matter of preference: almost all amps and speakers can take bare wire ends. Speaker wire is speaker wire. 12 gauge is standard. Don’t get sucked into any pretentious overpriced audiophile bs.

If you get all the details together you should ask at /r/BudgetAudiophile, especially for feedback on specific Marantz models, if you’re looking for something smaller or want a particular look/style.

The Yamaha does not have a phono input built in phono stage preamp so you will still need the Mani.

The Sony STR-DH190 ~~$149~~ $129 costs less, is a bit better amp, and it includes a basic built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain to start with.

The Mani sounds good, however it has an odd gain setting.

Or what is a nearby town or zip to search for a used receiver?

There is no difference in sound quality between the well known brands like Yamaha, Sony, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer etc.

If you prefer a new receiver over a switch box just get the one with the options that you want and the design that you like. The Sony DH190 is at the moment a good choice because it’s end of life and provides because of this a very good bang for the buck.

Retro look for a receiver = patience to find a vintage receiver in working condition.

Alas, nearly every receiver/amp made after 1984 or so is gonna be your typical black.

I've been through a few vintage receivers that I loved the looks of, but they all had some issue that wasn't worth getting fixed. Some day I may fork out $400 or so for a fully refurbed 70's silver-face pioneer receiver, but, until then, I may have to just live with a black box.

As for black boxes, the sony DH-190 seems to get pretty decent marks especially for its price:

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH190-Stereo-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B078WFDR8D/

Now, speakers, on the other hand, have had a huge resurgence in vintage aesthetics so you can find a lot of great new speakers out there in walnut veneered boxes that I think look amazing. Speakers is a HUGE topic, though, and there are literally hundreds of options out there. I'd maybe just start with a vintage pair...which are usually not too hard to find locally on facebook or goodwill or the like.

Also, serious congrats on that Turntable score! That's a really amazing find. Take care of that one!

PS. consider Sharing that turntable find in r/BargainBinVinyl !

Hey y'all. I am looking to upgrade my extremely old receiver (a Technics SA-5730) to something more modern. I recently bought a Sony STRDH190 thinking that the receiver wouldn't affect the quality that much, and....yeah, that was dumb. I hooked it up, played one side of a record, realized it sounded off, compared it to my old one, and have already returned it. I realize now that I probably have to spend more than what I assumed was a bargain. I would like to keep it under $500, but if there's something crazy worth it just above this price-point, please let me know.

My current setup is:

 • Technics SA-5730 receiver
 • ProJect Debut Carbon TT
 • Pioneer SP-BS41-LR speakers
 • Sennheiser HD 599 headphones
 • Also play music from my computer just through a 3.5mm to RCA cable coming from my motherboard

Thanks for any help.

Hard to recommend the AD18 when you can grab a refurb AV receiver for $160 that has way more features.

https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktxsr383/onkyo-tx-sr383-7.2-ch-x-80-watts-bluetooth-a/v-receiver/1.html

If you don't care about the 4K HDR video pass-through, you can easily grab a 1080p model off Craigslist for under $100. People with 2000-2010 stuff have all upgraded or are upgrading.

Edit: Or you could get a Yamaha stereo receiver for $130.

If you like the Klipsch sound, then the R-51pm isnt a terrible deal, I just prefer the ability to upgrade as I go, with separate components and such. I also prefer buying used gear. Shopping around for used stuff has got me some killer deals.

Amazon has a used pair in very good condition of the RP-150m for $250, or new for $289 in Cherry. Pair that with a Sony Reciever for $99 and youd have a pretty good starting point for about $350.

Also, I believe the newer reference series is a significant step up in performance from the older line, like the R-15PM you're looking at. Buying the newer R-51M when they're on sale for about $150 and a reciever may give you better sound quality.

What are you needing for that budget? Receiver and two front speakers? A small home theater in a box?

If you need a receiver in that budget, it’s tough, as power doesn’t always come cheap.

This goes on sale for $99 every once in a while.

Sony STRDH190 2-ch Home Stereo Receiver with Phono Inputs & Bluetooth Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078WFDR8D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_wTe3Fb64NGSGX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

If you just want two bookshelf speakers, Costco has the Klipsch RP41M on sale every now and then, too, for around $90.

If you just need speakers, you can get lots of good speakers in the $100-200 range, but they’ll be bookshelf speakers most likely (no low bass). The Infinity R162 go on sale regularly for $160-180 and are fantastic at that price. Klipsch has their RP-150M on sale for $240 or so (https://www.adorama.com/kprp150mc.html).

If you need a HTIB or a sound bar, I’m not much help.

What I think you have there is a Pioneer PL-12D. The boxy font makes the D look like a 0.

Here's a picture of what the back of one should look like, with the cables (the fact that this one is red/white and yours is red/yellow doesn't matter).

Your ebay seller either has no idea what they're talking about, is flat out lying, or both.

In the 80s there were some mini systems, where the turntable, tape deck and receiver all shared a power plug (usually on the receiver itself). Each individual piece was designed to only work in the system, so they had weird little plugs to connect them together. This is not part of one of those systems.

As a standalone turntable, your left/right/ground cables plug into either a separate phono preamp, or an amp/receiver with a phono connection. Those cables take sound from the turntable to the amp. The turntable still needs power though. It still needs to plug into the wall. In the first photo there is a wire that clearly has the ends cut and stripped. That shouldn't exist. Someone cut the power plug off the end of that wire.

Sony STR-DH190 (receiver) & Sony SS-CS5 (speakers) This is what I’m running and I couldn’t be happier and it will be under budget for you so you can get more vinyl! The receiver has a lot of great options for vinyl, phono line, Bluetooth, there is a PH OFFSET setting which allows you to put more power through your cartridge to bump the sound coming from your TT and the speakers are awesome and well balanced without to much high end or low end. Just my 2 cents, good luck friend!

Hello all, I need setup help/suggestions. I am trying to setup a system for an apartment for me and my fiancee. We are not audiophiles and we just want a system to listen to vinyls, connect to bluetooth from phones for music, and maybe connect our TV to.

Turntable: Orbit Basic Turntable: https://uturnaudio.com/products/orbit-basic-turntable ($179)

Receiver: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH190-Stereo-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B078WFDR8D ($149)

Speakers: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RJLHB8 ($75)

I know it doesn't have a digital audio in, but I figure it keeps everything nice and cheap, and I can just use the 3.5 mm headphone jack to RCA cable to plug into the receiver and get sound no problem. I'm not setting up a surround sound system or anything, I can just use the better speakers if I want. Does this make sense at all?

Looking to purchase equipment & furniture for an affordable home audio system and could use some buying advice.

Specifically, I want to get a belt-driven turntable, a receiver and speakers, trying to keep the total cost of these items under $750 (ideally closer to $500) without sacrificing sound quality. As a starting point, I've identified a couple options, but I'm not 100% sure about quality or value of these (except for the Sony receiver which came recommended by a pro):

 • Fluance RT81 Turntable with AT95E Cartridge, Belt Drive and Built-in preamp ($300 on Amazon)
 • Sony STRDH190 2-ch Home Stereo Receiver ($150 on Amazon)
 • Polk Audio T15 100 Watt Home Theater Bookshelf Speakers ($80 on Amazon)

I also want to get either console table or cabinet that can not only house the turntable and receiver (not necessarily speakers), but also at least 100 vinyl records that can be easily accessed and displayed. $250 max.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask about furniture housing, but I'll take any tips on the technical components! Thanks!

an amp will take a line-level signal and amplify it so you can listen on your speakers.

a receiver will do the same job, in addition to giving you control over volume and source selection.

some receivers can power multiple sets of speakers, so you could potentially get a single receiver and use it both in your house, and for out in the garage.

if you want to keep things simple, and at the lowest price, you'll be able to use a simple stereo amp to power the garage as it's own audio zone. but this will mean you'll need some more accessories if you ever want the house and the garage listening to the same signal from the input plate in the garage.

for example, a simple stereo amp for $50

https://www.amazon.com/Channel-Audio-Amplifier-Professional-Speakers/dp/B06XZL2PQD/

alternately, you can get a more full-featured receiver, and a speaker A/B switch, and use the receiver for listening in your home and then for listening in the garage when you want.

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH190-Stereo-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B078WFDR8D/

there's a lot of answers to this part of the equation :)

That marshall is great. If you want something super portable an good looking, thats definitely a good choice.

I would also take a look at the LG XBOOM RK7 this gives up some of the looks and portability, but is cheaper and sounds great at higher volume.

If it were my money I would get the following:

These speakers are amazing, but for the reciever, I'd head to a local record store or pawn shop and get something vintage then drive it with a DAC for the bluetooth.

Hello, my girlfriend just bought me my first vinyl record, so I am planning on buying a setup to play it and to start my vinyl collection, but I had some questions on how exactly I should go with this.

The turntable I was looking at, recommended by this community, was the Orbit Basic Turntable. I was looking at it and saw that there is an option to have a preamp installed to it, which got me thinking about what exactly I needed to play this music. I assumed that I only would need a turntable, speakers, and a table, but now I see that I need a turntable, preamp, AV receiver, speakers, and a table? Am I missing anything?

My current plan is:

Turntable - Orbit Basic Turntable (link)

Preamp - Pluto 2 Phono Preamp (link)

AV Receiver - Sony STR-DH190 (link)

Speakers - Edifier R1280T (link)

My budget is very flexible, but I don't really want to spend too much, maybe around $250-500? So I ask you guys to please suggest me options and review what I have picked out so far!

Thanks

I come to you humbly confused by my seemingly simlple 2.1 setup.

I've searched a few subs on reddit and have come across similar questions, but am yet to find a good solution and wanted to reach out to this community.

Simply put, I have 3 sources (bluetooth receiver, turntable, TV) that are feeding into my Audioengine A5 speakers, these speakers are the original models with only a physical volume knob, no IR receiver (this was updated with the A5+ models). The turntable and bluetooth receiver are both 3.5mm inputs, the TV only has a digital output so it is passing through a DAC before going into the A5s.

Currently to adjust volume I need to turn the knob on the driving (left) speaker to adjust the turntable or the TV volume (bluetooth I can do through phone). This is a pain in the ass. The bigger pain in the ass is that in order to switch between the turntable and the TV I need to swap inputs as the A5s only have 2 3.5mm inputs (1 on top, 1 on rear).

Ideally I would like to have something that has a remote control where all of my devices route through that has both remote volume control and some level of EQ control (even if its just bass/treble). I bought a receiver thinking this would solve my problem, but i still wasn't able to control the TV volume.

Is something like the Schitt Saga S the answer to my dilemma? Or is it as simple as something like this receiver that I somehow failed to setup correctly?

Current setup diagram is pictured above- let me know if you have quetsions

You didn't specify what kind of connector so I'm going to assume you're talking about normal audio line out via 3.5mm jack or RCA jack.

Also these products I'm linking are just hte first thing on Amazon I saw to give you an idea of what's out there. I'm not endorsing any of these specifically.

What you CANNOT do is use a splitter to connect the speaker to two devices e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Syncwire-Nylon-Braided-Stereo/dp/B07431YDWM/ This will not work because the output of one device will be feeding into the output of the other devices. The outputs are not made to be connected together and IMHO you risk damaging the devices.

What you can do is either switch, or mix the outputs.

Something like this would let you switch between outputs and you can select which device is connected. It's basically just an easier way to unplug and plug in your speakers from one device or the other: https://www.amazon.com/STEREO-Manual-Speaker-selector-available/dp/B073GWCRP3/

This is also what home stereo receivers are for. A receiver has speakers and inputs connected to it and it handles being an input selector, and amplifier, all in one. So if you already owned a receiver such as this then you'd have your speakers plugged into it, and you'd have Input 1 and Input 2 for your desktop and TV. Then you switch between them by pressing a button or using a remote control. E.g.: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH190-Stereo-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B078WFDR8D/

On the other hand, if you want the speakers to output audio from both devices simultaneously (e.g. the devices "share" the speakers and both can play), then you need a mixer. The mixer would let you mix and control the volume of the two input sources and mix it together into a single output you can connect the speakers to. That's a more specialized piece of equipment meant for studio recording and stuff, so that's harder to find. Here's one: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Channel-Audio-Passive-Recording/dp/B07Y2RYHFF/

Sound like you need a receiver. You're going to have more inputs and be able to switch easily between them with a remote. I have experience with this one from yamaha, but it would seem it's currently unavailable.

If it's for stereo, and bluetooth is fine for you, maybe the Sony STRDH190 could work. You would plug
(1) your projector audio out to an rca input using jack to rca (from what you've sent, the audio out of your projector seems to be a jack)
(2) your turntable to the phono input (I'm guessing the pro-ject doesn't have an integrated phono preamp)
(3) your iphone to the receiver using bluetooth
Then speakers cable from receiver to your speakers.

If you are planning to add a sub, maybe you should look into av receivers. This Denon does everything you want and has wifi. Then you have these ones from Sony and Yamaha, but they don't have phono so you will have to purchase a phono preamp like this one from pro-ject.
