Try https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O8YLMVA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zryoFb6XYT6HW if looking for passive but you would need a subwoofer.

What do you think about these Sony SSCS5 Sony bookshelf speakers

As far as I can tell somewhat often. Comparable speakers at comparable prices include the Sony SSCS5 which is often half off at many retailers, I think i've seen it for around ~75 a pair at some points.

the 190 does now have an output for a sub so you will need a sub with high level output/inputs. I am using a 190 with a dayton sub-100 feeding sony SSCS5 3-Way Speakers

I would very much like to use these speakers on my PC. What else do I need to make this happen? An amp and a DAC? Which ones should I get? I'd like to go cheap. I don't need anything fancy.

Thanks for the feedback man. I ended up picking up these speakers because they were on sale. I'm sure they'll be enough for me for my first setup. Will look into adding a sub sometime soon!

Yes. But why spend $320 on a pair of entry level towers. You can get the bookshelf speaker variant, and an entry level subwoofer. That will result in much better sound.

Thanks for the input. Another option I'm looking into is the Sony SSCS5. Of course then I'd need to add an AMP and I'm really pushing the budget. Would you have any recommendations for sub $100 amps?

Additional (noob) question: The Sony SACS9 Subwoofer is active and has speaker-out on the back. If I were to buy the sub could it power the speakers, or would I still need an amp?

I have posted about what a great deal these Sony speakers are before.

But I advise people to get 3 pairs of the bookshelves - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS5-3-Driver-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLMVA/

These sound better than the towers and you are spending much less. The center speaker is overpriced and has different drivers - don't get it. Plus you will get a far better soundstage with identical speakers in LCR.

For those who are on even more of a budget, get 3 pairs and split with a friend for LCR each. Then get a cheaper pair for surrounds which matter far less.

These are better than most speakers that cost $500.

I am a beginner with vinyls and got a Technics SL-220 turntable a few months ago. For Christmas I got a Yamaha R-S202 Receiver and Sony SS-CS5 speakers. I went to set everything up today but realized that the R-S202 Receiver does not have a phono input for the turntable...

From what I've been seeing online it seems like I have 2 options: buy a preamp for somewhere between $15 to $100 OR return the Yamaha R-S202 Receiver for a receiver that has a phono input.

My question is what will be cheaper and easier? Right now it seems like a hassle to repack the receiver, ship it off (hopefully I won't have to pay for shipping the 15lb thing), buy a new receiver, and wait for it to get to me. But I'm also not sure if there's stuff I don't about as a beginner that would make getting a slightly better receiver a better option in the long term.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Edit: Any specific recommendations for a preamp or new receiver would be very helpful!

All the more reason not to overspend on it. The only reason to go bigger would be is if you want surround sound options. You can always add that later though. Pay attention to the back of the receiver unit to compare input options and speaker options. Here's where I'd start:

what sort of components do I need for a passive speaker? My speaker is Sony SSCS5 3-way 3-drive speaker system( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O8YLMVA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 )

For starter, I know I need to have an stereo amplifier and a macbook. Possibly some sort of cable, but I dont know what kind of cable I need. If I buy a bluetooth ampifier, do I still need to buy cables?

I will run the speaker on my 2015 macbook pro.

I am completely new to this :)

Sony STR-DH190 (receiver) & Sony SS-CS5 (speakers) This is what I’m running and I couldn’t be happier and it will be under budget for you so you can get more vinyl! The receiver has a lot of great options for vinyl, phono line, Bluetooth, there is a PH OFFSET setting which allows you to put more power through your cartridge to bump the sound coming from your TT and the speakers are awesome and well balanced without to much high end or low end. Just my 2 cents, good luck friend!

First off, I did room EQ with min, and the 400HZ dip existed, right up until I bumped that range in the EQ, and now it is flat. So 1 flaw in the speaker that can be easily fixed with processing... I also stuffed the boxes with cotton, and it made a massive improvement.. It is now a similar freq response as my klipsch speakers... it just required a little more time and work tuning them.

Secondly, I believe your pricing are off...

Polk T15 \~$69 a pair

Pioneer SP-BS22 \~$114

Sony Core SSCS5 \~$118

Without a doubt none of these speakers are great, and not fighting that the T15's are as good as the other two you listed.. However, one of the easiest things to upgrade later... is the speakers. Even the Pioneer and Sony speakers would likely end up being replaced anyways.... so why waste the extra $100-200 on a slightly better pile of crap that you will later replace.
Personally I feel spending that towards a nicer center or a sub would be a much better investment, or even a nicer receiver that you won't have to upgrade in a year or two.

Just picked up a Technics SL-DD22 for cheap, need to complete my setup. Overall budget in the $300 range, can be slightly flexible. Used is fine for any components. Here is my local craigslist: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/

  • Preamp+amp vs receiver... Any reason to go with one over the other? Will only be used for turntable.
  • P-mount cartridges. Having a lot of trouble figuring out where to buy these--any help? A lot of info seems to be outdated. What would be good to pair with this table?
  • Speakers--I have no clue what I'm looking for here. I don't mind searching craigslist, but it feels like an utter crapshoot. I've been thinking of just buying these Sony's new and not worrying about it.

All help is super appreciated!

Ok, good. That's a modern receiver that should work well in this budget.

You could go with.... 3 of these and at a sub later https://amazon.com/dp/B07WHZR6XD

These would probably do "ok" without a sub https://amazon.com/dp/B00006JPDI https://amazon.com/dp/B00009WBYL

Which model turntable? Sounds like it may be a turntable and stereo receiver/amp combination. If it is then add a pair of inexpensive speakers instead of bothering with the sound bar. Sony SSCS5 ~~$149~~ $75 on sale as a low cost option, add speaker wire $9. Or what is a nearby town or zip to search for used options for $25 to $50? Make sure to put on a new stylus once you confirm it's working with a $1 bin record.

On sale bookshelf speakers Sony bookshelf speakers Usually ($118-$150) = $73 (wont last long, offer for ~$80 one ebay too)

Monoprice sale 12 inch subwoofer = $99.99

Kinter 2020A+ amp $34.99

Total: $206.99

Alternatively you can get 2 of these

Remove Sony bookshelves with ^ = 329.99

You can also get the regular sony's and a better amp and still within budget. This is the absolute best price/performance I can think of.

Right now there's a great deal on the Sony Cores. You can buy 2 sets for the LR and Rear LR surrounds $73 per pair for a total $146.

The matching Sony Centerchannel is $73.

That gives you 5.0 for $219 and these Sony speakers, especially the C are more capable than the Jamo.

For an AVR right now it's dodgy to get anything with HDMI 2.1, besides your TV has eARC which can send lossless audio to the AVR so it kind of negates HDMI 2.1 AVRs until more devices come out. I'd definitely wait for the AVRs to mature. Just get a budget Denon S750H and upgrade the AVR much later on. $350 at BB but they will price match Costco where it is $320.

Finally, I know it sounds crazy, but you'll definitely want a subwoofer and a real one at that. Get an SVS PB-1000 for $500 and enjoy movies and games like never before.

To stay under your $1k budget consider starting with a 3.1 instead of a 5.1 system. The subwoofer will add tremendous quality to your system

$200 ain't gonna do an amp and speakers and sub - get amp and speakers - add sub later.

the advantage of powered speakers (and i'm a fan of them) is fewer components, fewer cables, and no questions about matching. it's not a price advantage if you're looking at equivalent quality equipment between passive / active
