For anybody else with this issue, get one of these bad boys. It's pretty cheap and it works really well with almost every garage door opener! Probably one of the best smart home pieces I have ever bought!

MyQ. Super simple and there are probably more intricate options out there, but for just the basics of what you are looking for, this has been great for me.

I have this MyQ .
The transponder mounts on my garage ceiling and connects to my WiFi. I have a super old garage door, and it works with that.
A sensor mounts to the inside of the garage door, and it senses if the door is up or down.
When you remotely close it, it shines a bright light and makes a very loud alarm beep to warn everyone nearby.

Update July 15th 2020- After researching a bit (and alternating being busy and lazy), finally decided to just go with the MyQ hub and sensors from chamberlain. (Chamberlain Group myQ Smart... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075H7Z5L8)
It was the easiest install and setup. Getting power to a spot between to two garages was the most painful. Tested for a couple days, everything seems to be working ok. Couple things that bug me, and I’ll post soon, but overall it just works.

Yep, this is what you want. It can do alerts if left open and such. I have one of them as well and with SimpleCommands it can tie into the Ring system as well which is great.

I recently got a MyQ garage door opener via Amazon in the US with a rebate that took $30 off. I've got it working Homebridge and it's been running fine.
Only downside is that it has to traverse all the way before you can send the garage going back the other way. In the summer, I like to crack the garage door and that can make things a bit complicated.

So its kind of a hodgepodge of different technologies.

The garage door itself is connected via a myq closer which is connected to my wifi.
From there I have a raspberry pi running (amongst other things) homebridge.io and there's a custom plugin for homebridge to connect to myq's api.
Other than that its pretty damn fast as reflected in the video. Its also pretty cool to be able to walk up to my front door and ask Siri to unlock the door.

I assume you just bought this:
If so, you are going to be in for a sad reality. All that does is makes a non-smart garage door opener MyQ "smart". It will interface with the MyQ app. That is all.
As mentioned, to then make this adapter HomeKit - you would need one of these:
Which you can see is stupid expensive. Chamberlain/Liftmaser really messed up their MyQ ecosystem when it came to HomeKit. Its so fragmented and hard to understand.
If your garage door is already MyQ - then you may want to look into HomeBridge or HOOBS. That is what I use for my MyQ garage door (it has the logo on the motor itself). This interfaces the garage door with HomeKit perfectly.
If your garage door is NOT MyQ, there are a few better products like the iSmartgate or the meross Smart Garage Door Opener .
