Check out the basic dimensions of the box, that will help.

When they go down to $9.99 ea, these are the gold standard, typically anyway, for tupperdors. I assure you they do go down to $9.99 with prime, so be slightly patient. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00284AG5U/

Get a food grade tupperdor for no plastic smell and a large space.

I got this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00284AG5U/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_Ym7CFbGTG6MQP

Its large enough for Amazon's standard Spanish cedar trays as well if your so inclined. I have 90 or so cigars in there and humidity is held perfectly where I want it.

Amazon is your friend. Find cedar shelves and there is Tupperware that will fit two shelves perfectly. Boveda packs and digital hygrometer and ur good to go. Woods pretty, plastic is efficient. Sistema

This is pretty much the standard here. Sistema KLIP IT https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00284AG5U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_llUsEbN4K7B05

All you’ll need to do is air the Tupperware out for a day so that the plastic smell is gone. I usually wash them with dish soap, dry thoroughly then let them air out.

Not sure why that link is so long. Based on what I have in it now, it looks like it will hold about 64 6 inch by 52 ring cigars.

Get a Sistema Klip it 236 oz, with some boveda packs. Works really well and won't break the bank. Wait for the tupperware to go on sale, they fluctuate in price, but you can get them for around $10. https://www.amazon.com/Sistema-Microwave-Collection-Noodle-31-7oz/dp/B00284AG5U?ref_=ast_sto_dp

That wood humidor will leak humidity if you don't seal the glass window. The acrylic jar is perfect if you won't have a lot of cigars.

This is the one most commonly recommended. It fluctuates in price from $9.99 to $23.99. Usually it is $13.99, but lately has been at the high or low end of the range. Sometimes you can find them at HomeGoods or Target.

If you want spanish cedar trays, the above tupperware will fit 2 of these in each one:

Question for tupperdor makers/users

Hey everyone, I’m planning on DIYing a tupperdor, but I have two questions:

1) The only container brand I ever see anyone recommend is the Sistema KLIP IT. Is there a reason for the exclusivity? Would any container with a rubber seal do the trick?

2) I also see recommendations for Spanish cedar trays but can I forego these?

Thanks!

If you don't know that you want a box of such-and-such cigars then buying the entire box might not be the best idea. If you're going to buy twenty or twenty-five of something even ten of something it is best to be sure it is a cigar you enjoy or that is some sort of rare thing that is very very hard to get and thus "collectible" and that stuff is crazy expensive.

If you are buying more cigars than say you'll smoke over the weekend, you will need some sort of storage. Easy-peasey is the "tupperdor." Rubbermaid Brilliance in 9.6 cup (20-30 cigars), Sistema Klipit in 236 Oz (considerably more than the Rubbermaid and there are cedar trays available that will fit probably shown in the "bought together list": https://www.amazon.com/Sistema-Microwave-Collection-Noodle-31-7oz/dp/B00284AG5U/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2836T3V63VOA3&dchild=1&keywords=sistema+food+storage+containers&qid=1599748865&sprefix=siste%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-5) are typical tupperdor recommendations. Airtight container with a gasket lid that latches more generally.

Boveda humidity packs in 65% or 69% at a rate of 60g per 25 cigars of capacity. (Boveda come in three sizes- 8g; 60g; 320g.) Do not mix rH levels. Do not mix humidity devices. Better to have a bit more than you need than to have too few.

Make a tuppadore. You could have one for each of you, but keep in mind if you buy boxes, who will get the box, and do you want to age those sticks together? I bought this one today, https://www.amazon.com/Sistema-Microwave-Collection-Noodle-31-7oz/dp/B00284AG5U/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1UZ4IY50UCJMN&dchild=1&keywords=sistema+klip+it+236+oz&qid=1592085766&sprefix=Sistema+klip+it+236%2Caps%2C175&sr=8-1 along with cedar trays and boveda 69% packs. I have two of these to separate different styles/flavors https://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Brilliance-Storage-Container-1991158/dp/B01JCNEJVQ/ref=sr_1_13?crid=2JQ25POEWLIQM&dchild=1&keywords=rubbermaid+brilliance+food+storage+containers&qid=1592085842&sprefix=Rubbermaid%2Caps%2C244&sr=8-13 Each person could have one of these, with the boxes going into the larger unit. I store mine in my wine fridge @ 65f.

Sistema 7L and 2 spanish cedar trays worked great for me starting out. You could dwindle to 1 tray, or go with no trays at all and just toss some Spanish cedar in there. Digital hygro, I got the caliber IV. A 60 gram boveda will do just fine as said above, and you're done. Tupperware is 10, boveda 5, hygro 20 (a good one is worth every penny), and trays are 15. So, 35 with no trays, add trays later if you want. Here's the links:

As someone else already mentioned, tupperware container with some Boveda packs. However, here's an additional thing I like to do.

I will take some run-of-the-mill zip-loc bags, clean them with a distilled water & baking soda solution (to remove the plastic smell since cigars easily pick up smells). Whenever I get new cigars or boxes, I will segregate them to their own zip-locs with Boveda packs in the large tupperware container I keep.

Zip-locs are semi-permeable (meaning air can seep into and out of them VERY slowly), so the bag and tupperware system I keep acts like a "two-layer" approach. Each cigar/group of cigars has its own "private" space to do their own thing, but all the bags share a common area that is humidity controlled so what little air seeps into them is at the RH I prefer.

As far as plastic containers go, humidity sealed tupperware containers and acrylic jars (both can be found on Amazon) are options.

i've had sticks taste like that too! not these but other ones. just guessing it's the way they were stored before i got them, because after about 2 months in my humidor they lose that floral taste.

do you ever get some with that faint taste like an unlit match heads? it's usually comes from sticks with nicaraguan fillers for me. i prefer the match taste over the floral ones.

*my humidor is really a tupperdor with spanish cedar trays in it. (2 trays per box)

I have two Sistema Tupperdors with two cedar trays in each one, along with either a 62% or 65% Boveda, whichever I have handy. They last forever.

For box storage, I have a coleman cooler with cedar shelves, and I use a pound of 65% Heartfelt beads. I also have a wine cooler ("wineador") that I don't even plug in any more--it just holds RH really nicely and stores a lot of boxes. It, too, has about a pound or two of Heartfelt beads.

With the beads, I find I don't have to do anything to them in the spring, summer, and fall, but I do need to add some distilled water every few weeks from December to about April.

I find the idea of a fancy humidor is a waste of money. If you've got serious coin and a showplace house then go for it. But if you're just a regular joe who values the preservation of your sticks over appearance then you can't beat the tupperdors or coolerdors. The problem I find with dedicated nice-looking humidors is that they simply don't seal all that well, nor do people take the time to season them correctly or maintain humidity levels correctly. I've owned several in my years of smoking and I gave up on the whole idea.

One of these: https://www.amazon.com/Mantello-Spanish-Adjustable-Divider-Humidors/dp/B079V3KYT7

One of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733TYGWX

Season the cedar trays by patting with distilled water and put them in the Sistema container with the Mantello tray on top of the F.e.s.s. container. After 8-12 hours or so, pat them with distilled water once again and let it sit for another 8-12 hours. Add two or three 62% Bovedas and a digital Hygrometer. When it's at a constant 62% add your cigars.

I put up a post last week about mine. If you search "My Cigar Tupperdore - Pictures" you can see it in progress. I put the details below.

I know there are guides on YouTube and other online locations, but I thought I would share my recent setup. I used many of those guides and will include some in the links below. I added this per a member’s request and as a means to have one location for others to gather data. There are plenty of other options and I am by no means an expert. This is merely a guide as to my process to this point. I did this as a temporary solution until I can find a nice humidor. I am by no means an expert, but I hope this helps. If anyone else have tips please feel free to share them. Steps 1. Get a container with a good seal and preferably latches to lock on the lid. I used the Sistema container but many others are available. Wash at least once with dish soap and water. I washed mine three times and let sit overnight to dry. (Component link below) - $13.99 each 2. A Hygrometer is a good option to measure your temperature and humidity. I selected the Cigar Oasis Caliber IV Digital Hygrometer by Western Humidor (Component link below) - $23.99 each. 2a. It is recommended to calibrate any Hygrometer before using. This is sometimes called a “Salt Test.” Fill a small water bottle capo with table salt. Put some drops of Distilled Water (Always use distilled water) until the salt is wet but not soaked. Put cap and Hygrometer into a sealed bag and wait overnight. The next day the reading should be 75% humidity. If not follow instructions to adjust. (Detailed video link below). Mine was fine out of the box even after the test. 3. Cedar Shelves are optional but I decided to add one (possibly another later). Using a clean cloth or new sponge, wipe entire cedar shelf with distilled water. Do not make it dripping wet but a good once-over. Make sure to use distilled water only. This is prepping the wood so it does not rob your hydration device during “Seasoning.” (Component link below) - $15.50 each. 4. Put cedar shelf inside container. Then add hygrometer and something to add humidity. I used a Boveda pack and some damp paper towels using Distilled Water. You could also use a damp sponge (or paper towel) with distilled water if available. I also put a layer of plastic so nothing was spilled inside the container or on the shelf. Seal the container and let sit for about 24 hours. The numbers should get high as the humidity is absorbed into the cedar shelf. I used a 320 gram Boveda pack but you could certainly use something smaller, and take it out of the cardboard if you prefer. (Component link below) - $22.99 each. 5. After 24 hours remove the sponge or paper towel, and let sit for another 24 hours (I am at this stage). 6. At this point the humidity should be relatively stable. Add some cigars. The humidity should change as it adjusts to the new additions. Monitor your hygrometer accordingly. 7. Approximately once a week open to allow outside air in to recirculate for a minute or so.

After some research this is a very popular combination to build a Tupperdor. You can get some seasoning Bovedas and/or seasoning wipes to round it out, and would put you right in budget. I opted for wipes because they have propylene glycol, which will help with mold later.

I did find the fit is pretty tight, so I'm going to sand the bottom of the trays a little as suggested by somebody in the reviews.

Very thoughtful of you, lucky guy.

Since you have time before they will arrive, I do suggest putting together a tupperdor for him. He will want to start resting them as early as possible so he can enjoy them. Try to discourage him from lighting one right out of the package, it will not be bad necessarily but will not be as good as it could be.

Here is an amazon list for you to consider, I own and have used all of these:

$10 cutter, 2 pack of $9 lighters, $9 tupperware or $22 larger tupperware, $17 4 pack 65 Boveda

You can get this all done between Target/Walmart and a local cigar store for around the same prices also.

Edit: correct link for the $9 tupperware
