That motherboard is fine. You could get an Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero if you’d wanna spend more money, it also comes with WiFi so you wouldn’t need an adapter. & for the SSD, you could get this for cheaper https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L6GF81L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5OPfFb1KT16GS

I recently ordered the Silicon Power 1TB; is it worth canceling/returning it and buying the 1TB version of this WE Black instead? I mainly play competitive games and use my system for music production. I currently have a WD Green SATA III 240GB, so I understand the upgrade is going to be significant either way, but if I can get a better product for a few more dollars (as long as it’s worth the performance), I will.

>...I'll have a look at the Phison, thanks!

Silicon Power is generally a good cheap option. I did not buy it ('cos no 2TB option available locally) but have a drive with identical controller and RAM chips and it is great. Just linking that -damn SSDs have gotten cheap!

>...I'm thinking I will be fine, but maybe I'll look into mobos a little more

Please do, that one is a "known bad" mobo and has shocking reviews. b550 (MSI is fine there) would suit you better. Asus or Gigabyte are the best for lower-end x570.

>Is that legit?

For the seller? Depends on where you live. In the EU it is fine, but here in Australia they are breaking their license agreement. Regardless of where the buyer lives you are never doing anything remotely illegal, though. There is a theoretical chance your license could be revoked, but I have never heard of it happening. There are re-sold bulk purchased licenses. You are just buying a never-used license 2nd hand.

I could be wrong, but isnt this: The Silicon Power A80 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L6GF81L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

a superior product? It has for the 1TB version over double the TBW.

Edit: it only? has 512 DDR3 instead of 1GB on the equivalent 1TB ex950.

EDIT2: READ! According to Amazon reviewers, its a potential bait and switch, the A80 drives switched to Unic2 nand. After some research, I cant really confirm this. They did update the model but my personal research shows they switched to SM2262ENG from the E12. It also now has Nanya dram.

Old version Review: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/silicon-power-p34a80-pcie-gen3x4-m-2-nvme-ssd,6180.html

New Version review: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/silicon-power-a80-ssd-1-tb/

Another edit: a customer in the techpowerup comments got one with E12s and potentially Kingston ddr3. I noticed the "good" stuff has M28 ending suffix while the e12s/ddr3 combo has m28AB.

Probably want to avoid this mess.

Silicon Power is a perfectly well-known brand and they make some excellent SSDs.

OP, you should really look at getting the A80 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L6GF81L) instead of the A60. The former is about $20 more but has DRAM and better speeds than the A60.

I was about to post the 1TB for $109.99, which is apparently at least a 30 day low. It is $2 more than the 1 yr low.

P34A80 is a TLC drive that had the Phison E12 (like the Rocket), although they have also been shipping with the SM2262EN (like the SX8200 Pro). Either way, "Consumer NVME" per the r/NewMaxx tiers.

you can consider something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Gen3x4-000MB-SU001TBP34A80M28AB/dp/B07L6GF81L I've purchased couple for work and those are fast enough.

1 points • Eboxinatorness

Personally I'd go with a 1tb SSD and skip the HDD. I know pretty much everyone recommends SSD for OS and HDD for game library but as someone who doesn't replay a large number of games or play more than a couple games at a time I like having more SSD space for game storage to get faster load times without having to switch between drives vs the extra 500 gb capacity.

You can find something like this with TLC flash for about the same price as your drives that will be a bit faster and more consistent than a 1tb p1. Otherwise you could probably find the 1tb p1 for around $100.

Your current selection is good too, really comes down to personal preference.

r/buildapcsales • comment
1 points • wildeye

That's 55% faster reads and 88% faster writes. While that's only theoretical, still, I'd call that more than "slightly" and it seems to me that $10 extra is a steal for that amount of extra performance.

It looks like the $129.99 A80 you're referring to is here:

Don't get the crucial, get some Silicon Power P34A80 with DRAM in it for hardly anything more. Like this for $110 Review here. Absolutely will be worth paying the premium for the speed and overall performance among other things. In the past it made sense to buy QLC drives when they cost twice as much (like $110 vs $220), but now TLC drives are only like $20 more for 1tb.

by the way, that M.2 SSD is a SATA SSD not an NVME one. Which is fine for a lot of people, but you're not getting the legendary speeds everyone's obsessed about.

> untill 1tb M.2's come down a bit then i'll populate the second M.2 slot with one

$95 not low enough? The $130 A80 model uses the same chips as the Corsair Force MP510, getting performance comparable to a Samsung EVO, it also has a higher TBW (lasts longer).

A big part of making new SSDs is not about making them faster, but making them cheaper. Brands like Crucial, Samsung, and Intel are heading in that direction.

250gb is 100$ and 500gb is 90$? either way, I don't think both options are worth it.

100$ is around 1tb of budget ssd storage. be it better tlc on sata or qlc on nvme.

if you want faster, both the regular sabrent rocket with 1tb or this one costs 120-130$, are almost as fast as the samsung drives and you get way more storage space for the price

What is open core??? I’ve got dual boot windows10 and Catalina on pcie nvme. And never heard of it till about a month or so ago. Boot loader of some sort??

Basically I started with high Sierra, Put in a r9-280x with mac efi firmware “metal” card. Downloaded Mojave’s installer from App Store. It did some firmware flash, then updated to Mojave. Did the same to catalina App Store installer. Did another flash. Then updated to Catalina. All good from there ?!?! This was all done on a spinner disk. After Catalina was installed. I did a fresh install of Catalina directly to pcie nvme. And removed spinners.

~~The 1TB CS3030 I linked is a good choice for a large boot drive if you need one now. It has a 5-year warranty and uses TLC/DRAM for respectable performance and reliability. I don't think you'll find a better drive for cheaper (unless you wait for prices to come down more).~~

Edit: the CS3030 just jumped to $127; it's no longer a good deal. I'd recommend a P34A80 instead ($118, TLC, DRAM) or an SN550 ($105, TLC, DRAMless).

Which of these SSDs is better?

I'm considering between https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L6GF81L?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M64QXMN/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=performanc066-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B07M64QXMN&linkId=bdc76377d80f2623143293ede429c4c8&th=1.

I've read reviews for both, and some people have issues with speed being inconsistent, unreliability, and even advertisements in the WD one (what?). Does anyone have either one of these and/or recommend them? I check the other brands and they are either costlier and have lower speed.

I also have no idea what the hell this is supposed to mean:

"The Silicon Power PCIe SSD does not have a b notch and therefore, the b key on the SSD connector will prevent it from being inserted". Might just go with the Black WD. And why does it come with a heatsink!? Can I use it without one?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

A lot of people like Samsung's drives, but they carry premium prices. If you don't mind the price tag, performance is good. I've used Silicon Power for a desktop for myself and one of my friends and both of us are very happy with the results. You might want to grab a cheap heat sink to stick on it if you use silicon power, or another brand of nvme without a large attached heatsink. Some people on the internet have complained of issues with overheating in sustained read and write, which is a common problem for high speed nvme drives without built in heatsinks.

I would use 2tb or maybe 1tb + 1-2tb sata with the nvme drive as the boot drive. Then grab a heat sink to avoid any issues. Haven't tried to run them without one, it might work fine but for $5 seemed easier to just order together, put it on and not worry about it. Note that all these links are examples of the product, but i didn't check for best price you should shop around to see if someone else has it cheaper. I know newegg carries those drives, likely some other major retailers as well.

Going up in price and performance - I've only picked stuff that beats the sabrent - and tbh the differences are fairly small - especially in read.

https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Gen3x4-000MB-SU001TBP34A80M28AB/dp/B07L6GF81L

https://www.amazon.com/CS3030-Internal-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B07MW9NJSH

https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Rocket-Internal-Performance-SB-ROCKET-1TB/dp/B07LGF54XR/ this is the quicker Sabrent gen3

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2/ref=psdc_1292116011_t1_B07LGF54XR

The Samsung evo is the fastes gen3 NVMe drive, and I don't think it is worth the extra money over teh Sabrent Q rocket. If you were going to spend that sort of money - close to $200 then you are looking at gen4 NVMe drives for a major uplift in perforamance.

https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Force-MP600-Gen4-PCIe/dp/B07SQZYW2V/

https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-PCI-Express-Interface-Performance-GP-ASM2NE6100TTTD/dp/B07TJWZGL9/

The real world benefits of super high speed drives are fairly questionable - particularly in a home environment - however if you are running lots of vm's there may be some benefit depending on what they are doing.

Personally I think the $110 Sabrent or $120 silicon power drive would be absolutely adequate - the Silicon power is probably worth the extra $10 for that big jump in write speed.

I need clarification and help on purchasing a 3rd storage, my 2 options are:

  1. This NVME M.2, Silicon Power 1TB is priced at $109.99 USD ($119.99 USD originally)
  2. This SSD, Crucial MX500 1TB Internal SSD is priced at $114.99 USD

I currently have an ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WiFi ATX Motherboard, the same NVME M.2 as above, and an additional Seagate 2TB Barracuda. My mobo supports a 2nd NVME M.2 so I have no problems there, but I noticed that the 2 storage options are really close in price, is there a reason for that? (performance, quality, brand, etc.)

I was gonna buy the NVME M.2 since in my head, it's the superior one, but I wanted to ask here before I make pull out my wallet as they are close in price. Thanks in advanced!

As others have said, I'd change the drive. There's no sense in going for the M.2 SATA WD Blue when you could go NVMe.

Definitely checkout NewMaxx's SSD guide. Consider spending the extra $20 or so on the Inland Premium or Silicon Power or if you're not in a hurry keep an eye on /r/buildapcsales, as they've gone on sale to prices close to the drive you've got. If you want to stick with SATA, I'd say get the regular WD Blue or Sandisk Ultra 3D so you don't take up an M.2 slot.

For cooling, you've got an intake and an exhaust pre-installed already. Here's some good information on cooling. Personally, I'd consider adding at least one more and making it an intake so you've got slightly positive pressure inside the case. Case fans are pretty cheap if you don't care about RGB.

OS, probably Windows 10. I honestly don't run an antivirus, Windows Defender is good enough. Just don't download anything sketchy, and know what you're downloading. Maybe run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware if you're worried.

Steam for games, yes, but there are other launchers as well.

Can't speak to Tarkov unfortunately, but with a 3600/2070S you should be fine.

Agree with u/iLove-Minecraft on this one. You definitely are going to want to get an SSD for this build. I would recommend getting a nice NVMe SSD to start, and dropping the Hard drive all together. 1TB should be enough for at at least a bit, and down the road if you need more storage, you can get a cheap 2TB Hard drive like you have in your list already.

That case is also too expensive IMO for your budget. The NZXT H510i is a $100 version of the same case, just without the front glass panel and front LED fans, which btw, don't offer any thermal advantage (I actually tested this in my H510i build, adding front intake fans made my thermals worse overall). The NZXT 510 is the same as the H510i, just without LED strips for $80. I would say for this budget, you should look at cases in the $60 - $100 price range. they are largely subjective and come down to looks, so I will leave it to you to pick on the suits your fancy. Any of the top sellers on newegg in that price range will be solid cases though.

The motherboard is also micro ATX, which will look pretty weird in a mid tower case, due to the size. The B450 Tomahawk is a popular option, although it is a bit pricier. Also running low on stock.

For the CPU, I might consider getting the new 3300X for a bit cheaper with similar performance, if you want to balance at the price a bit. Or go up to the 3600, depending on what your budget allows.

The Ram you picked is a little on the pricey side, you can find similar RGB enabled kits for around $75. If you wanted to forgo RGB ram, you can pick up this DDR4 3600 MHz kit for $73. Those ryzen processors favor quicker ram.

The Ryzen 5 3500u supports up to DDR4 2400mhz, so I would suggest getting that or higher. Here's the least expensive 16gb I found (actually, the 2666mhz one is $2 less expensive).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HOM9WCI/?th=1

You didn't specify how big a drive you wanted. I went with a 1tb drive for mine, but if you don't think you'll need that, you can get a 500gb drive. A reddit user, /u/newmaxx, has compiled a spreadsheet of available SSDs - you should filter by nvme: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B27_j9NDPU3cNlj2HKcrfpJKHkOf-Oi1DbuuQva2gT4/edit#gid=0

But the short answer is that, for a budget NVME, I'd suggest a drive based on the SM2262EN or Phison E12 controllers. The least expensive of these, for 1TB on Amazon, is the Silicon Power A80 which uses an SM2262EN controller: https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Gen3x4-000MB-SU001TBP34A80M28AB/dp/B07L6GF81L/

The Intel 660p and WD SN550 are kind of slow, but if you can get one for $100 or so for 1TB, I'd get that.
