Strongly recommend this: the Sennheiser Game One. I know its a bit above, but it was a good headset at $250, now its $137. If your budget is really strict you could go with the hyper X cloud 2

Try finding a good pair of open-back headphones. I can hear everything as if I have them off of my head. Most are a bit pricey but I’m sure you can find something used. One that I’ve seen good reviews about is the Sennheiser Game One. Personally, I have a pair of the HD 6XX, except it is headphones only. I have a separate microphone that I use.

The best part about open-backs is your ears won’t be sweaty after hours of gaming!

Hyper x is fine.

A little out of the price range but https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KK8ZLEC/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdo_t1_I0zbFbJ1EYCCJ

Literally on sale for 1/3rd off and probably the best headphones ive owned thus far. Only problem i have is after 5 years the braided line has started pushing out the cord but that happens with all headsets.

Hey, I'm looking for a pair of open-backs with a mic. Amazon recommends these. They're Sennheiser, which I understand to be a respected headphone manufacturer, but I'm wary of anything marketed as "gaming". You seem to know your shit so are these a good buy, and if not, what would you recommend at that price point?

Any chance you could save a bit more money and wait for a deal on Black Friday or Christmas?

For under 100$ you might find an okay headset, but to be honest you will probably have to replace it in a year or so.

You can get a heavily discounted amazing quality pair for $150-$200 around the holidays.

I played this game throughout the end of the 360 lifecycle and pretty much the entire Xbox one life cycle and went through about 6-7 pairs of cheap headphones till I finally bought a quality pair of gaming sennheisers and have had them a few years now and they are amazing.

I am looking for a new PC headset mostly for gaming but also some music. I would like a headset with a good sounding built-in mic and decent surround sound. It's just for basic use scenarios like gaming and Spotify. No super high fidelity music listening or editing and I don't have a DAC or AMP.

  • Budget - Flexible $200
  • Source - PC
  • Requirements for Isolation - It would be nice to block out PC fans but totally flexible on this one
  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear
  • Preferred tonal balance - I'm a basshead for music but I like it balanced when I'm gaming. I think I'd lean towards bass if I had to pick one. Hopefully, there's one that can switch tonal profiles.
  • Past headphones - I currently have the HyperX Cloud 2. I don't have a problem with the sound or mic quality, but the headset is too small for my big ol head. I have my headset fully extended but it still is tight to my ears and puts a lot of weight on the top of my head. It gets very uncomfortable during long sessions.
  • Preferred Music - Rap(bass please) and rock
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Comfort for long sessions(very important for my big head), mic quality, bass, surround sound for gaming. Auto-muting flip up and down mics are nice, but that might narrow my options too much. I'm very flexible on this one.

I would like a headset with good surround sound that makes it easy to differentiate directional audio such as enemy footsteps and gunfire in fps games.

I'm definitely not limiting myself to gaming-oriented headsets. Anything that covers my needs works for me. Thanks for any suggestions.

Edit:

Currently looking at the Sennheiser Game ONE or Sennheiser Game ZERO. Haven't done much research yet. If you guys have any notes on those I'd love to hear them. I would like some tips deciding on open/closed style headsets too.

Sennheiser Game One for open back headphones.

Or

Sennheiser Game Zero for closed back headphones.

These are my favorite headsets depending on if you like open or closed back headphones. (I prefer open back for the larger soundstage, the trade-off being no noise isolation and sound bleed)

I've used many headphones from Turtle Beach, Astro, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Plantronics, Sony, and others. The Sennheiser Game One has been my favorite Bang-for-the-Buck gaming headset for the past 2.5 years. It is not wireless, but it works with PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Pair it with the Windows Sonic app (free) or Dolby Atmos app (paid) on the Xbox and you now have excellent surround sound headphones on Xbox for about $130.

Good luck with your headset research!

Having used many headsets, I will NEVER go back to closed back. Open back headsets really expand the sound around your head, plus you can hear better if anyone needs to talk to you without taking them off. Downside-you can hear other things around you, so if you have a load gaming area or crazy kids, may not be the best. I personally recommend the Sennheiser GAME ONE. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KK8ZLEC

That depends on how much your willing to spend and if you want a headset or headphones. I will say if you are willing to spend up for something like a $200+ pair, you generally want to pair that up with a soundcard for your PC unless your mobo is fairly high end and has a solid audio chip already preinstalled on the board. Otherwise if you dont really want to spend for both a higher end pair and a sound card and deal with setting up your audio profile, getting a cheaper pair in the 70-160$ range is probably a better option for you. Also depends on if you want wireless or not. I personally prefer wired because I dislike my headset dying in the middle of a game since that can get me killed in a pvp match plus they are cheaper, but if you want to reduce some of the "bulk" you mentioned then maybe wireless is a better option for you.

Personally I use Sennheiser Game One Series: https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Game-ONE-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00KK8ZLEC I didnt want to spend a ton on a headset, but I wanted something at least somewhat high end for gaming with good sound clarity to pick up footsteps and such in shooters. Its mic is high quality for headset standards. Also this is the most comfortable headset I have ever worn. I have owned 2 of these total, and the first one was covered by my 4 year warranty half way through the 3rd year. The current ones Im using have lasted for over 4 years at this point, probably past 5? Hard to remember exactly. So durability is solid. I still have my old pair as well, the issue they had was the mic stopped working but they serve as nice backup headphones now.

I have heard some solid things from others about the Sennheiser PC37X: https://www.amazon.com/Massdrop-Sennheiser-PC37X-Gaming-Headset/dp/B084GFGMYT Also not a super high end headset, but you get a lot of bang for your buck with it. This headset is actually based on the game one series design, but simply cheaper. It came out later otherwise I probably would have gotten these instead.

If you do want to go for a higher end pair or a wireless pair I wouldn't say I have a ton of experience in that area. You might want to look up some reviewers if thats the case. I do know that generally speaking Bose are considered to have some of the best sound quality headphones can get by many reviewers, but Sennheiser does generally come in second while being more affordable. Plus if you are looking for an open ear (or open back, you see both terms used for the same thing) or to get a headset instead of just a pair of headphones then Sennheiser is probably the best. Bose tend to be closed ear headphones specifically. Sennheiser has a good mix of everything. And if your looking for comfort always get over the ear cups. These are the ones that fully go around your ears so no pinching happens around your ears causing ear pain. Otherwise pay attention to reviews and see what people say about the pressure it places on your head. A really tight pair of headphones can become uncomfortable after awhile.

Consider following notes when selecting a gaming headset in general:

  • They should be comfortable when worn for long time. Over-Ear DJ-styled headphones are the most comfortable.
  • You will need an headset with good microphone quality
  • Low latency is very important (if they are wireless)
  • You will need a good battery life (if they are wireless)
  • They should have good Surround sound staging (for 3D games) and also good fall-back and mixing capabilities when you are simply playing a 2D game.

Here are some well reviewed gaming headsets:

Here's one of my old posts. The Sennheiser 558hd are non gaming and very comfortable and sound great. I posted some gaming ones as well in case you decide you want a mic. Lmk if you have any questions.

I went with an astro mixamp and paired it with a Sennheiser 558hd headset. It came out to about $150 during a sale. If you can afford it, it's best to get an excellent stereo headset and pair it with an amp to give you virtual surround. I ended up getting a sennheiser game one headset later to have a built in mic. This headset is very comfortable and is open back. If you prefer closed back, there is the game zero.

If your budget is to spend less and you can deal with wireless, the sony gold and platinum headsets are actually pretty good. The difference being the golds have 40mm drivers and the Platinum has 50mm drivers plus 3d sound capability.

Yaa honestly you could pay around the same price for a pretty good mechanical Keyboard and better headset strait from Amazon. I have a recommendation on a good cheap open back headphone for FPS it is the Sennheiser game one or pc/37x its the same headphone just the newer branding is the PC37x one. I would also recommend any gateron switch Mechanical keyboard they are good long lasting switches you can find them for under $50 these days on Amazon and there way higher quality then a membrane keyboard you would get from IBuypower, I would know I have one. I would just recommend staying away from the blue switches if your in a room where you could annoy someone with clicking a lot red and browns are good for gaming, also black switches even if you have hammers for fingers. The other thing is sound will leak out of an open back headphone and in so if your in a room with someone that could also be a bother to them but they have a much better sound stage for FPS gaming so that's the benefit. The Cooler master headphones are also said to be some of the best under 100 closed back headphones for all around use like music gaming and movies. Both headsets have microphones as well.

https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Headset-Surround-Omni-Directional/dp/B07ZV7SDQX?th=1 Mh650 and Mh630 are your best options on here there the most up to date models.

If your interested in the Sennheiser as of this post the headset is $125 but they constantly go down in price and on sale. https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Game-ONE-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00KK8ZLEC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2KKR6L4Z60W7V&dchild=1&keywords=senhiesers+gaming+headset&qid=1588037084&s=electronics&sprefix=senhi%2Celectronics%2C139&sr=1-1

as for the keyboard if your looking for a board that will last a long time and has replaceable switches that are never going to go bad The Kemove is your best bet it has optical Gaterons wich they say are faster then normal switches even in response time and have no mechanics on the inside of the switches that can ever go bad so they will last forever.

https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Waterproof-Computer-Programmable/dp/B07W6ND3BB/ref=sr_1_1?crid=5KGIF8MBNBML&dchild=1&keywords=kemove+keyboard&qid=1588037273&s=electronics&sprefix=keymove+%2Celectronics%2C138&sr=1-1

EDIT: These are my budget picks of spending at the very very most $150 for both items if you have any plans on going above that range there could be some better recommendations for either Keyboard or Headset at around $200 through $250

At work, I use either IEMs or closed-back headphones. It depends on how much sound isolation I'm looking for, and how hot the office is on that particular day. I'm more likely to wear the IEMs in the summer and the headphones in the winter.

At home, I have a set of open-backed headphones and an open-backed headset with a mic. I wouldn't generally recommend open-backed headphones at work, though it depends on how loud you like your music, how close you are to your colleagues, and how much isolation you want.

Headphones I've used:

IEMS:

  • TRN V80 (cheap but decent)
  • Fidue A83 (expensive and great until I stepped on them)
  • AKG N40 (great until the glue failed)

Closed-back headphones

Open-back headphones

Open-back headset

Many of those have since been superseded in their product lines. For example, the PC 363D has been replaced by the GAME ONE or the PC 38X.
