Upgrading a laptop with ssd
Hi PCMR, I have an old acer aspire that I haven't used for a while and I was thinking of upgrading the aging hard drive that makes it basically unusable. I was going to get this one put it in then give to a friend as a birthday gift. Does anybody know if this is a good choice or is there a better one.

Thanks!

Yes, sure, most internal drives you get come with SATA interfaces, whether they are SSD or old-fashioned spinning disks. Here is an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D998212
You can hold the Option key and click the Apple icon top left, choose System Information, and look what it says under Storage. What are the details under "Physical Drive"? Does it say if it is an SSD?

I just use a 1TB sandisk it has worked really well, you can find them on amazon SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 535 MB/s - SDSSDA-1T00-G26 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D998212/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_l97HFbWMBCA1B

It's honestly not worth picking up no-name SSDs since the price difference between them and those from companies like Crucial, Western Digital, or SanDisk is negligible. I have one of these in my desktop, and it's been running great. Plus, SanDisk's customer service is pretty good. I had to contact them for an issue I had with a flash drive. They sent a pre-paid shipping label to send it back, and they were reasonably quick in providing a brand-new replacement. When you're dealing with these obviously Chinese brands, you never know what kind of support you'll receive.

The 1 TB SanDisk SSD comes within budget.

And is there anything wrong with this SSD or is there a certain brand I should learn towards?

Surprising... OWC has a great reputation. But everyone has equipment troubles, it's unavoidable. I haven't had mine for very long... maybe three months? But I purchased this SanDisk from Amazon.
I have a HDD from OWC that's 4TB that I use as a Time Machine. It's actually pretty old but faithful. Twice now I have had to restore my computers from it so it saved my bacon. Always important to have that BU.

I currently have one of these: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SSD-PLUS-Internal-SDSSDA-1T00-G26/dp/B07D998212
that I am using for storing games only. Is it worth buying this one that has DRAM if it's only being used for games? I need another SSD for storage, and it's either buy one with DRAM and move my games to it and use my SanDisk one (which as far as I know doesn't have DRAM) for media storage or I just buy another SSD without DRAM for cheaper and use it as media storage.
So... basically, if the SSD is being just used for games, is it worth buying a DRAM SSD or does it not matter if it's not your OS drive?

ark and pubg really need to run an SSD to run if you need a 1tb SSD and have 100 bucks get this
for pubg i had buildings fail to load when i had it on an HDD (do not that this was many months ago they might've fixed it this was just my poor experience with it (this was on an i7 8700k and a gtx 1080 so it was not due to a poor system)

I personally used "classic" (2.5") SSDs from samsung and sandisk.
SanDisk generally really good for more budget oriented setups, but something like a Samsung EVO tends to be faster.
Hope this helps.

You're not using a SSD currently. You're using a regular hard drive. SSDs tend to be about 5x faster if you buy a SATA one.
I like samsung SSDs the best. The 860 Evo is very good, but its expensive ($150) compared to the competition. For most people the SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Internal SSD makes more sense at $110 and you're not going to see a difference.

Typically name brand ssd will do fine for ya bud I use SanDisk because has best write speeds so if possible have and ssd for your operating system ssd amazon
So optimal pc build is to have an ssd for your operaring system and games*
When it comes to games its subjective but you could do a WD black HDD for big storage or put games on it as ssd aren't the best for transferring big ass files now an ssd kicks as at small file transfers

Does the SanDisk PLUS SSD (1tb) have DRAM? If not, should I look for one that does have some?

I have an Optiplex 7010 DT. Currently has a 250GB HDD, 7200 RPM. I’m looking to get a 1TB SSD. Would any 2.5” work?
My components (especially the hard drive) is identical to the guy in this video, for reference: https://youtu.be/jLj8hvrx2E8
Here’s the SSD i planned to buy: SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 535 MB/s - SDSSDA-1T00-G26 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D998212/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GpFtFb3XHYJ71

For $150 you can get 1TB of NVME m.2 storage that will do over 3000 MB/s even on PCIe gen 3. A 1TB SSD will cost about $100 but max out at 500 MB/s.
1 points • HeadMasterR
If you really need the 1Tb storage:
- Samsung EVO 860 1Tb \~ 140€ (150$)
- SanDisk SSD 1Tb \~ 100€ (110$)
Otherwise a more affordable choice would be:
- Samsung EVO 860 500Gb \~ 75€ (80$)
I personally had an 1Tb HHD but I changed to a 500Gb SSD, since I could manage my storage space to 500Gb and get a more affordable one.
But in general SanDisk, Samsung and Corsair are good choices. Having that as a guideline you can decide what suits you better.

I'd personally go with a manufacturer that I know.
Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX500-NAND-2-5-Inch-Internal/dp/B07YD579WM/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=1tb+ssd&qid=1591073901&sr=8-5
Or this:
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SSD-PLUS-Internal-SDSSDA-120G-G27/dp/B07D998212/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=1tb+ssd&qid=1591073901&sr=8-7
I've got 3 of those 1TB SanDisk SSDs and they've been very reliable.
https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Force-MP510-960GB-CSSD-F960GBMP510B/dp/B084ZWC796/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=corsair+mp510+960gb&qid=1591074047&sprefix=corsair+mp&sr=8-15
I've got 2 of those as well and they've been great. If you can justify the price difference, I'd get the MP510.
But you need to make sure your motherboard supports PCIE M.2 2280 SSDs if you were to go with the MP510.

After trying to install the recent Division 2 expansion, I found that my measly 250GB SSD was getting full to the point that I had to move/uninstall other games off of it in order to allocate room for the expansion. I'm considering purchasing a second SSD that's closer to 1TB for my PC that I built at the beginning of the summer for future games/updates. Here's a link to the pcpartpicker list from my recent build for reference. I'd prefer to order from Amazon but not completely committed to that. I'm looking at This SanDisk SSD right now, since it has decent reviews, 1TB, and is within my price range.
Here's the questions:
- Will there for any reason be any compatibility issues between the SSD I'm looking at and my build? If so, what would be the alternative?
- Should I be looking elsewhere for a better deal on the SSD? I occasionally browse r/buildapcsales but don't see anything that fits my needs right now.
- Is there any reason that I should avoid this brand, and if so, what brands would you recommend?
- Once I install the SSD, will I need to do anything in order for it to work effectively? Or is it similar to an external in that you can essentially plug it in and use it?
Thank you for all your help!
Edit: Here's a Samsung SSD with the same price and size that I'm looking at as well.

One terabyte of SSD space goes for about $100 these days.
For SATA SSDs, a good option is the 1TB variant of the Crucial MX500 which costs $115. Slightly cheaper is the $100 Sandisk 1TB.
For NVMe SSDs, the Inland Premium 1TB is a good compromise between price and performance at $130.

Because PC is a wide range of hardware with different bandwidth limitations. You have people using sata ports with sata SSD's/hard drives, people using mSATA/m.2 SSD's, NVME SSD's and now the newest and most expensive kid on the block PCIe Gen 4 SSD's which is what the next gen console uses. Also the difference in loading times between a next gen console using their proprietary SSD's and your average sata SSD from 2010 isn't going to be noticeable. Maybe the console will load the game 5-10 seconds at best faster than whatever SSD you have in your system. If you have a hard drive, then yes its a big difference. The reason why Sony is touting a 10x faster loading time between the PS4 and PS5 is because the PS4 uses a Sata 2 3gb/s 5400rpm hard drive. Going from that to a PCIe Gen 4 connected SSD is like going from the Earth to Jupiter. Massive difference. But to the rest of us with SSD's in our PC's, the next gen consoles having them is meh. It will only give us the possibilities for faster load times in open world games since games will take advantage of the increase I/O speeds. Only difference is the console might load a little bit faster. Not to mention SSD's are becoming cheap and you can get a 1tb SSD right now for as little as $110

Well this NVMe and this SSD look like they jumped up $30 in the past few months. Probably shortages from the Corona pandemic causing prices to increase.
But the Sandisk 1tb SSD I grabbed in December is still $99.

I see several on Amazon. They're not the top-tier ones, but they're not no-name brands either. For something like games that would benefit from faster speeds, but could also be re-downloaded and re-installed relatively easily, they should be fine.
