Dashcam viewer option not showing up

I have used Samsung Pro Endurance MicroSD 128gb card with SanDisk MobileMate microSD card reader since the beginning. I was able to get sentry videos in the card and used some apps to view them on the phone or computer. But since the latest 2020.12.5 update, the dashcam option is gone and in the security tab, it says, dashcam feature will be enabled when compatible device will be attached. Now, not even the sentry videos get saved. Last file saved was at the end of March. I have tried formatting the card over and over in FAT32 with various utilities found on the web, and none have worked.

Is anyone having the same issue? What else could be done.

This will burn out in about 2 months max. You might be able to reformat it and have it work for another few weeks if you’re lucky.

Source: I had one. Because low profile is cool.

Get yourself one of these and a proper dashcam MicroSD card. Been working like a champ for several months since.

Haven’t tried yet since I’m still waiting on delivery, but from a previous video I watched, this was highly recommended: SanDisk MobileMate USB 3.0 microSD Card Reader - SDDR-B531-GN6NN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G5JV2B5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_B0NfFbWF2FAJQ

Getting one for myself since it seems like a simple adapter that’ll do the trick.

By chance, was the USB adapter that wasn't working for you this one?

Ever since 2020.40 my SD reader (this one I use for Sentry/Dashcam isn’t recognized by the car. Previously it had been working for over a year. Every computer I try the reader and micro-SD card on sees and can use the reader and card just fine. I have reformatted the card (FAT32/MBR) and created the TeslaCam directory like in the old days with no success. I have tried different SD cards with no success.

Now, if I plug in a Western Digital HDD, the car sees it immediately and is happy.

Sooo, what direction should I go here? Are SD cards no longer supported? Are certain readers no longer supported? I am not excited to put in a full blown SSD as honestly, the discrete form factor and “out of the way” aspect of the micro-SD is much more my preference.

This. MicroSD that specifically says it is for dash cams, and a microSD USB adapter. Like this and this.

SSD still seems unnecessary to me. I have this tiny combo in both Model 3s and they work great.

My setup:

  • USB to micro SD card adapter Very small, and easy to hide. I've not found a good spot or method to hide it yet, but having all of our drives in the same place makes it too easy to steal the drive too.
  • High endurance micro SD card These are more expensive than typical "USB Sticks". But do you want to find out the drive was/went bad when there was finally something to record? What size drive do you need? It comes down to how often you clean up the footage, the number of recorded events, and drive life expectancy. Larger drives will last longer as they are overwritten less.
  • Micro SD to USB C adapter To view the clips on my phone. If there is damage to the car, I want to see the clips there, and report the damage there. Going home and reviewing footage is great, but reporting and documenting the damage before moving the car is ideal.

I love the Raspberry Pi option mentioned, and I'll try it as long as the ability to review the footage "on scene" is still possible.

Still holding out for the ability to review footage on the in-car screen. If we can play MP3s from a USB drive, we should be able to open video files from USB (while parked).

The USB interface will be the chokepoint, regardless. Why not just a USB drive? Or perhaps a USB/mSD reader?

Ok yeah the slot may be defective then.

As for the card reader, there aren't any direct to micro SD versions that work with USB-C, so you'll need an adapter to fit the full size sd card slot or to fit a USB-A port.

With a direct USB-C connection, this Sandisk Extreme UHS-II dongle works great.

If you have or don't mind using a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 adapter, you can use this tiny SanDisk USB 3.0 reader which directly supports MicroSD cards, but would need a USB-C dongle to connect with the Surface Go.

They're both super fast and easy to use, depending on whether you want the full size card with USB-C, or the MicroSD that needs a USB-C dongle. The second one is the way I went for portability, but I have one of the full size ones for when I need to load files from my DSLR, also.

Any USB > 4MB/s write speed (most are advertised by read speed) will work in theory.

Realistically you should be use a DVR/high endurance card. I'd recommend a Kingston High Endurance card (https://www.kingston.com/us/memory-cards/high-endurance-microsd-card) and a quality USB adapter.

Some claim you need a full on Samsung T5 SSD, but thats wild overkill IMO.

The USB to MicroSD adapter included is, in my honest opinion, rather bulky and flimsy. (Mine fell apart into multiple pieces after trying to pull it out of an USB port)
Personally I use this with computers that don't have any sd card slot:
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-MobileMate-microSD-Card-Reader/dp/B07G5JV2B5

Just search for "compact MicroSD USB adapter" and you'll find plenty of variants. Majority of em far better than the one included with the printer.

I have had great success with this high endurance MicroSD card and USB adapter. I used to have a flash drive, but the video would often be corrupted and I received multiple error messages on the screen that the drive was too slow to handle SentryMode/Dashcam.

Ultimately, flash drives are not designed for the constant rewriting that dashcams demand, and they fail quickly when used as such. High endurance MicroSD cards were designed specifically for dashcams, which is why I chose to use them over flash drives. SSD external hard drives are also an option, however, they are not designed to handle the extreme temperatures that MicroSD cards can handle. They also use more power and take up more space than a high endurance MicroSD card.

Honestly, I wish Tesla would just include one of these cards with the sale of the car at this point or at least provide an official recommendation to use high endurance MicroSD cards. It would save a lot of frustration for everyone.

I'm using a high endurance micro SD card designed for security and dash cams.

SanDisk 256GB High Endurance Video microSDXC Card

with this reader: SanDisk MobileMate USB 3.0 microSD Card Reader

I've had it for about 1 month now and has been working great. It's super compact, wont move around when driving and should hold up well as it is specifically designed for this purpose.

take the SD card OUT of the phone, and insert it into a suitable reader on your computer. If your computer doesn't have one, you get get USB ones, like this one:

I've got a Roadie on order - hoping it's a great solution.

If you'd rather use something that costs less you should probably look for a high endurance microSD card. It's notoriously easy to fry a microSD card by continuously recording video to it. There are some tricks one can do to make the card last longer but Tesla doesn't do them. And there's ways to burn the card out faster and Tesla is guilty of at least one of those. So... You do what you can.

Amazon has a 32GB high speed, high endurance Samsung card right now for $10 - we allowed to link here?

That leaves you needing a MicroSd USB adapter. My work had many dozens of them that came with some cards we used to use, so I 'borrowed' one. You might have luck with this inexpensive and well reviewed one.

But, really, as /u/teebonez28 says... Roadie.

~$50 of very well spent and long-term dashcam/sentrycam storage right there. The Endurance line from Samsung is designed for outdoor/extreme temperature conditions.

I have a SanDisk High Endurance Card with an adapter.

If you get an SD card, make sure that you get one that is made for lots of read/writes.

If you get a hard drive, make sure that you secure it in place somehow. If you get in an accident, they can get jostled and come unplugged.

Build: midnight silver metallic, Gemini wheels, LR AWD, tow package, black interior, Vin 36xxx (has the amber taillights], 15 miles on the odometer at pickup. Ordered July 30 was ready for pickup Sept 2.

Issues: 1 paint chip on A pillar, windshield is misaligned, Gemini wheel covers squeak terribly (seems to be common, can only hear with the windows down going low speed), whistling noise at highway speeds, loud low frequency rumble with AC on that is annoying (anyone else get this?), purple passenger door! (kind of like the color though), few trim pieces with gaps, grease stain on headliner, small tear on side of rear seat driver side, driver door takes more effort to close than others and makes a “pop” sound when opening. I scheduled mobile service to take a look at these.

Accessories: I ordered these ahead of time so were ready to go when I got the car home, everything from amazon, overall very happy with how it all fits and looks. Matte screen protector (Carwiner $25, looks like you can get it for $18 right now), matte black hard-shell console covers (BougeRV $33, currently $26), center console storage tray (JKCOVER $15), Armrest hidden storage (TAPTES $17), performance style foot pedals (Etopmia $12), MicroSD for Sentry/Dashcam (SanDisk 128GB High Endurance Video $25 + MobileMate USB 3.0 reader $12), Bench seat cover with zip down center (Vailge $30), back seat protector kick mats (Lusso Gear $16), car seats are Graco SlimFit 3 in 1, a tight fit to sit in between but does allows center to come down with cupholders folded in ($158 each), waterproof blanket to protect trunk space when transporting things such as bikes, home depot supplies etc. (Bessport Camping Blanket $30), tire repair kit (Orion Motor Tech 77piece $20), also not installed yet XPEL 6” x 84” roll of PPF, planning to cut strips for rear bumper lip and door edges ($23), Optimum No Rinse for wash and Ethos Ceramic Wax PRO for finish, looks great, bug guts wipe right off.

I did the micso SD car route with this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G5JV2B5/

and this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NY23WBG/

It is designed to run dash cams. My fear of using a straight SSD is that in general, they are not made for continuous writes. SSDs do actually have a limited number of times they can be written to. Now does that mean a regular SSD will die due to continuous writes in 1 year? 5 years? 20 years? The micro SD will have the same problem I think though too. I suspect the using one of the SSDs on here would also work great, just putting another option out there. :)
