[SSD] Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD - $99.99

The 860evo 1TB is at the same price on Amazon and it's a TLC performance SSD (2.5" SATA).

Cheers: one of the only reviews to note the updated MJX controller & the NAND layer count. And, your choice to show benchmarks of only 1 TB drives is a sight for sore eyes. It's fair, clean, and easy to parse.
Likewise, the image restoration benchmark is a great pick. It's still stunning to see: a HDD soundly beating the pants off a premium-priced SSD. Of course, it's just one relatively niche benchmark, but it's rare to see even one SSD, who are usually pure superlatives of HDDs, falter.
It really puts the 80 MB/s write speed into real-world data.
Why Samsung sells a 1 TB version is beyond me. It doesn't seem too different than their TV naming scheme: "Let's change one letter that makes our low-end product eerily similar to a high-end product." EVO -> QVO | OLED -> QLED.
QLC seems like a niche, nearly DOA advancement that's cannibalized by nearly a decade of TLC optimization (from the OG 840 SSD). Samsung's EVO line-up already severely undercuts this drive, as prices have dropped:
Hopefully the 870 PRO / EVO (perhaps with 128L + MKX 'Metis') will be more interesting.

> Apparently not after finally finding the specifications for my laptop. Took longer than I thought. Gen3, but this was the listing that helped me find them.
If your laptop boots from a mechanical hard disk, pretty much any SSD would be an upgrade. Problem is everything is expensive because of the current situation.
This is the one I have on my Windows desktop machine. However, it is a desktop with no NVMe slot (I could buy a PCIe 3.0 but meh). If your laptop supports NVMe SSD, you could get this drive for USD 150. Just know that you will likely not get the full performance boost this SSD offers.

Consider if you want to just replace the drive and sell it so you can buy a PS4 Pro or a PS5, or replace and continue to use it. If the latter, buy this 1TB SSD https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E1T0B-AM/dp/B078DPCY3T/ref=pd_aw_sbs_147_3/132-0462340-4853103?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B078DPCY3T&pd_rd_r=215daf69-9c81-4358-8fee-8ecf39eb2849&pd_rd_w=znpyP&pd_rd_wg=s9aw8&pf_rd_p=b92b95f6-4deb-412c-ab19-44e7ae3926f2&pf_rd_r=BA971CB8VN12FDK1N17K&psc=1&refRID=BA971CB8VN12FDK1N17K - if it fixes the problem then your games will load faster, and if it doesn’t help then just return it. From what I can tell, your PS4 is too old to fully utilise the speed of that drive but it should still be a major improvement over what you had. If that’s a lot of money to you, then order the same model number that is on the drive that you need to remove (a 1TB 2.5” HDD); watch a YouTube video that explains how to remove it - the hardest bit is popping off a piece of plastic that initially feels like it isn’t meant to pop off.

I normally just buy the Samsung EVOs. They are solid ones for home use. But it really depends on what you are sticking it in. There's many different form factors now. Part of my rant was that I had to buy the older form factor since my motherboard is old.
But the PS3 and PS4 use a traditional 2.5 inch SATA 3 drive. Your PC probably uses the same.

The other thing you can do to make it faster is to upgrade the hard drive to a SATA SSD like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E1T0B-AM/dp/B078DPCY3T?ref_=mh_s9_apbd_otopr_b1PRaOp&pf_rd_r=HNYBNFW8DVJT8HAXG9F2&pf_rd_p=ba70c880-10f6-5485-8067-b891948fb3b6&pf_rd_s=mobile-hybrid-2&pf_rd_t=BROWSE_ANYWHERE&pf_rd_i=1292116011&th=1&psc=1
This upgrade is a little bit more complicated since you have to reinstall macOS from scratch on the new drive. For this you would need a USB flash drive with a bootable macOS installer.
This video shows you how to do it:

So I have a 500GB SSD with 3 TB of HDD, but I’m probably going to buy more ssd storage soon, I’d recommend you to do the same. As for which SSD, if you have an NVMe slot you could go with that, I have the Samsung EVO SSD which is really good, so that’s what I would recommend you to get. With the new generation of consoles, the newest games are going to be running off of SSDs in the PS5 and Xbox so that’s the future! I hope I could help you! Samsung EVO 860

Ahhh shit, really hope it's not that! Have had it in my PC for about a month now, probaly won't be able to return it at this point. It's a Samsung, this one to be specific. The 160gb OS SSD is also a Samsung, but a much older model. I grabbbed it about 4-5 years ago, but I never got around to installing it in my PC and it's just been sitting in the closet for a few years. Decided to install it with the newer SSD when I picked it up last month

This is what I got. I suggest either the 500gb, 1TB or 2TB. I have the 1TB and my wife has the 500Gb and both perfomed better than I anticipated. It’s noticable not just in this game but other games as well. Not sure if you play shooters but you’ll see a difference in performance. Hope this helps.

I rather have a 1tb Sata ssd than a <500gb NVME ssd. Just go for the 1tb so you don’t have to choose what to put on your ssd.
But the SSD I got skyrocketed in price. On amazon it’s base price is $200 but it’s on sale for $150. I got it for $80 during Christmas.

You can change out the HDD to a 2.5-inch SSD. Couple things about your plan, though. First, that enclosure does not support PCI-Express/NVMe drives. Second, even if it did, you would be limited to SATA 6 Gb/s speeds anyway. This SSD would be a drop-in replacement.

Buy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078DPCY3T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NjEQEb5Y3RM53 and install your games to it. Should fit plenty and you won’t have the performance penalty. You could also install windows to it and boot to it as your own system, leaving your dad to work off the other system.
Also 5TB doesn’t cost $2000, either in SSD form or as an HDD

It's cool. Yeah, it has 2 different slots. One m.2 SSD slot. One SATA 2.5 inch that can be SSD or hard drive.
For example, mine came with a 500GB m.2, I added this Samsung SSD.

Hey I've got an old MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, it runs Linux not macOS. Despite that machine running pretty well all things considered, it is not worth more than the drive it's running.
I get keeping machines alive as long as possible, but my older MacBook Pro is very much at the point where it is worth less than any possible upgrades and has been past that point for probably 4 or 5 years.
Hear me out, you could go on iFixit and buy a MacBook Pro 9.2 logic board $299, a new battery $94.99, 16GB of RAM $99, and an Evo 860 1TB SSD $149.99 so now you've got a DIY maxed out final version of the Unibody MacBook Pro and may still even got official macOS updates!
BUT that upgrade list, parts only no shipping, runs $641.99. For $641.99 one could build an acceptable but not amazing computer or be ~half way to the cost of a 2020 quadcore MacBook Air with 512GB of NVMe that will run circles around an "upgraded" unibody MacBook Pro.
It's just not sensible to drop $640 on an ancient computer, it's a computer they just don't last forever or hold value in the same sense a house or classic car might.
