Dashcam viewer option not showing up
I have used Samsung Pro Endurance MicroSD 128gb card with SanDisk MobileMate microSD card reader since the beginning. I was able to get sentry videos in the card and used some apps to view them on the phone or computer. But since the latest 2020.12.5 update, the dashcam option is gone and in the security tab, it says, dashcam feature will be enabled when compatible device will be attached. Now, not even the sentry videos get saved. Last file saved was at the end of March. I have tried formatting the card over and over in FAT32 with various utilities found on the web, and none have worked.
Is anyone having the same issue? What else could be done.

The Samsung Pro Endurance is another one in the same class. Not sure if it's more or less than the Vantrue one.
3 points • BlackDiablos
I'd disagree with that recommendation; check out the fine print:
> 10 Year Limited : 10 Year Limited Does Not Extend to Dashcam , CCTV, Surveillance Camera and Other Write Intensive Uses
I think it's worth paying a little more for an SD card designed to be used in a dashcam, such as this one.

Potentially instead of the SSD. My concern is that the SSD may become a high risk point of failure. It seems SSD's burn out relatively quickly with constant read/write unless you get something high end.
There are endurance SD cards that have been coming out meant for things like security camera's that write decently large video files constantly. Samsung has one I have personally used (not for crypto).
One example:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Endurance-128GB-Micro-Adapter/dp/B07B984HJ5
There's even a "High Endurance" series. The capacities are hopefully going to get into the 500GB range soon. There's always a chance the read/write speeds don't keep up but it might be worth a shot. Plus it could make your set-up even more tiny.

And make sure you use a heavy duty Micro SD card, such as the Samsung PRO Endurance. I have those for my dash cam and haven't had any issues so far after months of video recording.

A high-write capacity SSD or a high-write capacity micro-SD card with USB adapter.
A cheap USB stick will work for a while, but burn-out with all the re-writes.
Samsung Pro Endurance would be one of the micro-SD cards to look at.

It is the Pro Duo but even with the rear camera disconnected has the same result. Yes it is the 3 wire kit, and I did have it plugged in directly to the camera and not the mount. There is no way it could have been wired wrong because I tested it by connecting it directly to the battery. Having it connected with the USB adapter they include is when it kind of works but doesn't at the same time.
So seems like it is the card then? I got it on Amazon specifically for this. Heard to get higher capacity (4K video) rated for endurance.
Not sure if the 2 issues are related but would too slow of a card cause the camera to not boot at all when it is supposed to be in parking mode through the 3 wire kit?
1 points • sxswAustin
Sorry I didn't get your message until now. With two cameras recording in the highest resolution settings, the front records at 80.5 MB clips for audio and video and the rear is at 40.3 MB. Extrapolating that over the full card (I pulled it out to calculate), there are roughly 1,120 minutes (or just over 18 1/2 hours of record time) for 128 GB card. Here is one I purchased, though I got it slightly cheaper than Amazon.
Keep in mind, I have it set to record while driving and then manually enable the parking mode as needed. If there is something I want to save, I just tap on the camera itself and the 3-axis accelerometer will record the tap and save the file at that time point.

Yeah I that looks totaled lol. That’s a lot of front end damage with airbag deployment but yeah the adjuster/insurance makes that call. Also, That is precisely why a dashcam would be useful! It becomes a battle of one person saying they had the light but the other person is insisting they had the light and so on.
I forgot to originally link this as well, but also make sure you get a good quality MicroSD card like this one. These Samsung endurance cards tolerate the heat and constant writing better.

Endurance: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_5pp6FbGD105S1)
But the alert has since gone away and hasn’t popped up the last 3-4 times I’ve gotten into my car, so I have no idea.

> Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB MicroSDXC Card
Ok so I found that product: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Endurance-128GB-Micro-Adapter/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Samsung+PRO+Endurance+128GB+MicroSDXC+Card&qid=1579562430&s=electronics&sr=1-1
Which SD Card USB adapter should I use? Because I have had a similar issue with my USB thumb drive that I bought starting to stop working occasionally so I assume that is what my issue is.

I picked up two Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB SD cards, one for V2 camera and one for my Pan cam. I checked them in a laptop and they were formatted xfat. I just plugged them in and the cameras recognized them. No formatting was required. Make sure you get a card warranted for a continuous recording device.

Personally, I would use a High Endurance MicroSD card as they are specifically developed to be used in conjunction with dash cams which performs hundreds of reads and writes when in use.
1 points • OhLawdHeChonks
That and the Samsung High Endurance are the most recommended ones.

After some research I found that micro SD cards exist that are specifically designed for security cameras. Read the fine print and many will exclude security camera use.

Recommended by Whom?
Amazon recommendations are not to be trusted.
-
Formatting the Micro SD card in the dash cam is always recommended.
-
Reflashing firmware, or updating firmware also suggested
-
High Endurance cards generally recommended. Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB
Micro SD cards are considered a disposable part of the dash cam. It has a limited number of read/write/rewrite cycles. TLC based cards won't last as long as MLC High Endurance based cards. Also dash cam use will void warranty on some Micro SD cards.
-
You could email the manufacturer of the dash cam for a recommended Micro SD card list.
-
You could also trouble shoot with VIOFO
-
You could also trouble shoot with Samsung - with their 10 year warranty - Might be voided via dash cam use.
Anyways, good luck.

I highly recommend a micro sd card, specifically one that is made for dashcams, if you don’t want to invest in an ssd. I would recommend this one along with a USB adapter. I haven’t had any issues since I switched from a usb to this sd card.
1 points • Ocrizo
You’ll see lots of opinions on this. Some people will encourage you to get an m.2 or SSD with an adapter. But those are all overkill as the USB 2.0 throughput is substantially lower than their write speed.
What really matters is the drive’s write endurance, hitting certain write speeds, and heat tolerance. I’d recommend a high-end SD card with a good quality adapter. I linked the 128GB model below. a 64GB is more than enough for the average user, but having a larger capacity will distribute the read/write wear across more space, so the drive will last far longer.
1 points • Wangfap
Not just your own but one that's specifically designed for this type of load. This is the one I got after doing a bit of research. My dash cam has front and rear with 24/7 parking mode, so I wanted to make sure it would work when I needed it.

You're going to want to get an SD card that's rated for loop recording. This generally means SanDisk High Endurance or Samsung PRO Endurance. I have this Samsung SD card and it's given me no problems.

Yeah I’ve got TeslaUSB on a rpi zero W in the glovebox of my 2021 Model 3. Didn’t work until I realized I had it plugged into the power only micro USB on the pi zero (the one closest to the edge). Worked fine plugging it into the data+power micro USB instead.
Not only is it more convenient because dashcam/sentry mode clips automatically sync to my PC, but I suspect the endurance micro SD card I’m using in the pi will last longer than the Tesla USB stick that came with (which I think is a rebranded Samsung Bar, so not bad but not known for high endurance).

As for the music, I’ve never run into that on any drive, though I’ve always kept my music on the other port. So maybe before spending more money, try using your SD for sentry and a thumb drive for music as an experiment.

It's a Dashvue 750S 1ch.
I've owned it for 18 months and it's been great. I didn't get the 2ch because I don't have a spot to mount the rear facing camera. I put in a 128GB card and I drive about 500 miles a week. The card holds about 6-7 days of driving on it. The software to transfer it to the computer is easy to use. I like how it tracks speed and location with GPS. Would recommend for sure.

I would go with a high endurance micro SD card in a USB adapter. THey're made for constant overwriting like dashcams. I switched to that a while back and have had no issues since. I used to get things like this all the time but I also got the HW2.5 > HW3 upgrade also so I'm not sure which solved it.
I've been using this adapter and this card.

I've used the Samsung PRO Endurance MicroSD for about a year without any issues. Prior to that I burned through three "lesser" USB flash drives. One of the lesser ones still works, but the stress of working as a dash cam reduced it's read speed to single-digit Mb/s.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B984HJ5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
The card reader I'm using is the Vikasi SD reader. It doesn't look like this model is sold on Amazon anymore, but it has both USB-C and Lightning connectors to make it easy to dump files to a mobile device (which was convenient prior to the DashCam viewer update).

Weird response, I assume he just means "I dunno, try something else".
I got a 128G high endurance microSD and a USB adapter and it's worked well all year ($30)
Anyone know what the Tesla USB stick is? I'd guess it's just a rebranded Sandisk, which I would not trust in a car for very long.

Why would you remove SD card from dash cam? Micro SD cards are so cheap these days, $16 for a 64GB Samsung $27 for 128GB Samsung.
1 points • Galactinus
the issue you run into with memory cards designed for speed only is that they are not designed to handle being written over and over and they will fail quickly. The high endurance cards use different memory technology, albeit older, that is able to handle such abuse. Even still you will need to replace it occasionally. The bigger the card, the longer it will last, due to less rewriting during its loops. But they do get more expensive. I have the Viofo A129 Dual, with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B984HJ5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and it seems to work pretty well for me.
1 points • coredumperror
Drives like those are made with lower end, cheaper Flash memory, because the manufacturers assume that the vast majority of their customers will write a few files to it on occasion, and maybe read from it a handful of times in its entire lifetime. That doesn't mean they'll all fail if put into a Tesla and made to record several gigs of data per minute for hours on end. But some of them will.
Because of the experience you've described, I would reccomend a pair like this, instead:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Endurance-128GB-Micro-Adapter/dp/B07B984HJ5

you want a high endurance card made specifically for continuous video recording. the card you linked is not that. if you're set on sandisk, you'll want this one. another highly recommended card on this sub is the samsung pro.

~$50 of very well spent and long-term dashcam/sentrycam storage right there. The Endurance line from Samsung is designed for outdoor/extreme temperature conditions.

I got the dash cam just recently (bought it from Amazon). This is my very first dash cam, but so far I like it! My brother did a bit of research and told me that this dash cam is the best bang for the buck.
I put it to the right of the rear view mirror. When I am driving, I cannot even see the dash cam.
As for routing the cord, I used this video as guide.
A few tips: 1) do not forget to buy and SD card. Here is the one I bought.
2) Format the SD card as exFAT (or FAT32) before you use it
3) When you are placing the dash cam on the front windshield, make sure you are putting it on the wiped section of the windshield.

You are not. OP's link is for the EVO.
This is the Endurance Pro model, and it is on sale.
According to CamelCamelCamel, this is the historic low price.

make sure you hide it good.. if not leaving a $150+ dashcam right in view.. :/

I have an Aukey DR02. it's pretty well hidden due to the design.. plus i got it for $45. The quality if ok. 170 Field of view at 1080p30 .. license plate are readable at 1-2 car length. I had a problem with the date with the dashcam so Aukey sent me a new one..
so..i got two Aukey DR02 for $45 in a way.. i strapped the old one in the back so it's 170 view front and 170 view rear

just pick whatever dash cam you want. The one thing i would recommend is Samsung Pro Endurance microsd card for your dash cam

I used 128GB card since it has 5 year warranty and 43,000 hours of continuous write..
but i think you will be fine with 32-64GB . Most dashcams support up to 128GB while some will support 256GB.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Endurance-128GB-Micro-Adapter/dp/B07B984HJ5

10 minute of video will take up about 900MB of storage for the Aukey DR02 - 1080p30 resolution with sound. I think it's less if you disable the sound.

the higher the resolution the more storage it will take up.

I have had great success with this high endurance MicroSD card and USB adapter. I used to have a flash drive, but the video would often be corrupted and I received multiple error messages on the screen that the drive was too slow to handle SentryMode/Dashcam.
Ultimately, flash drives are not designed for the constant rewriting that dashcams demand, and they fail quickly when used as such. High endurance MicroSD cards were designed specifically for dashcams, which is why I chose to use them over flash drives. SSD external hard drives are also an option, however, they are not designed to handle the extreme temperatures that MicroSD cards can handle. They also use more power and take up more space than a high endurance MicroSD card.
Honestly, I wish Tesla would just include one of these cards with the sale of the car at this point or at least provide an official recommendation to use high endurance MicroSD cards. It would save a lot of frustration for everyone.

Viofo A129 duo is best bang for buck. It's highly rated on all dashcam review sites. If your hardwiring it, don't forget to buy a hardwire kit to enable parking mode. And for SD card don't be cheap. Cheap SD cards die quickly with continuous recording. Get something that can take a beating like the Samsung pro endurance..

I agree with getting a high endurance SD card, they're intended for things like loop recording. On the highest quality settings, I get about 10 hours of looped recording with a 128gb card.

Pi4 with official power supply, frame mount case, 128GB Samsung Pro Endurance microSD card, Logitech C270 on an X carriage mount.
If you want to pare it down, a Pi3 will work just as well as a Pi4 for OctoPrint purposes, but do get a good power supply as many 2.5A rated supplies will brown out on the Pi3. Also you can go down to 32GB for the microSD for OctoPrint, but I really recommend the Samsung Pro Endurance line as they're less prone to wear than most other cards and are reasonably fast. Whichever one you get, I recommend heatsinks.
For the camera, the Logitech C270 is my favorite since you can adjust focus fairly easily after opening it up, there are a ton of Prusa mounts available, and the USB cable makes it easier to keep wiring neat vs. the Raspberry Pi camera. But like other webcams the price is ridiculously inflated right now, so you may want to find an alternative, or until they get back to their pre-COVID19 price of $22.
