I know it's in US and doesn't seem cheap right now but it drops to 230 $ pretty often I'd check your import fees (which lower too when sales on) and compare with rift S price. It's actually objectively better than S if your IPD doesn't match cause it has hardware adjustable IPD and you could save a hundred or so by buying this instead. Rift S has sharper looking visuals and O+ has softer but no screen door effect (replaced by a random looking pattern you won't notice most of the time) they're close so its subjective if your IPD is perfect match to S.

Amazon has them for $290 new like Naisu said; Also, worth noting, there's the "Odyssey" and the "Odyssey+". The "+" model is the one you want; It's newer and much better than the previous one (typically cheaper, too).

Just a word of advice, I would avoid going with anything oculus. I used to recommend them for VR beginners, but with what facebook has been doing on the VR front, I would like people to avoid giving them money at all costs. If you want a cheaper alternative to the index, look for pre-owned vives, or check out other non Oculus options, like Windows Mixed Reality headsets (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT)

That being said, so long as your GPU has Displayport slots (and your GPU can handle VR), and you have an available USB, you should be good to go.

The index can be purchased in parts, as in the headset separate from the controllers, and those separate from the base stations, or you can buy the $1000 bundle which gives you everything you need. The index is also compatible with vive hardware, meaning you could get the index HMD and use cheaper vive controllers and base stations. IMO the full kit is definitely worth it, but since its not your money that is being budgeted, you might have a tough time getting grandma to pay that much for tech she doesnt understand.

This one ? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=samsung+oddysey&qid=1586450543&sr=8-1

It seems like it has been discontinued...

Also, can you put headphones with it? (or at least earphones)

I've had Vive since 2016 and I upgraded to Index.
Right now if you have $499 I'd consider getting Oculus Quest + Link cable, or a Rift S (if you have compatible IPD). Or Samsung Odyssey+ for 300 bucks (Amazon link).

Vive has the worst SDE out of all the headsets and controllers without analog stick (personal preference, I prefer analog sticks).

Check out the Samsung Odyssey +

But look for it on sale which should be about $230.

It's not perfect, but I think it's the single best entry point into VR hands down.

The resolution and anti-SDE make for a really solid image. Plus the IPD is adjustable.

The controller tracking isn't great and there are some other downsides but for me $230 put it in the realm of achievable. I get to enjoy VR now instead of waiting years for prices to drop and I get to do it on a full, legitimate VR setup instead of some bullshit, glorified smartphone holder.

Just uninstall the USB drivers completely, sell the Cosmos, and buy a Samsung Odyssey Plus instead:

I just sent this to a friend today: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_IcJEEb5K7QY9S

That's a great headset.. they are falling rapidly in price. Graphics cards are expensive but even an mid-range cars from the current gen will be more than enough for any VR title now. It's getting more and more affordable all the time.

Well, Amazon Global

Second this. You can pick it up for $300 on Amazon right now

Compared to the Oculus headsets, the screen and built in audio is better, but the controller tracking is slightly worse. Definitely a fair trade off, especially considering the price

I bought a Samsung Odyssey+ last year on Black Friday. I've used it every week since, so about a year. Here are my thoughts on VR:

  • Most VR games are indies, and many of them are very good. VR games tend toward smaller, pointed experiences rather than bloated AAA affairs.

  • The AAA titles that exist are a bit of a mixed bag. Half Life Alyx and No Man's Sky have been standouts. Skyrim and Fallout are lazy ports that accomplished the basic premise and stopped. Doom VFR is actively bad (its decision to only use teleport movement flies in the face of the fast, fluid combat the modern Doom games are known for and it fails at the design level).

  • Getting comfortable with smooth movement is a must. All of the games I've enjoyed (Half Life Alex, No Man's Sky, GORN, Battlezone, Arizona Sunshine, TWD: Saints and Sinners, Boneworks) either explicitly require smooth movement or are vastly improved by it. My recommendation is to get a 100 count bottle of Dramamine and take it before playing. By the time you get to the end of the bottle, you won't need more.

  • I really can't understate what a game-changer VR is. I don't think it works for everything, but that stuff it works for is just without comparison. GORN is a good example; it's a simple arena brawler and I've sunk easily 10X into it as I would the same kind of game on a flat screen. Getting into VR with an entry level headset is just so many miles above a top tier gaming rig.

Damn, I didn't know! I will look this up, thanks!

Edit: Sorry man but I am seeing that the visor is 629 on https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT . Where can I find it for 200?

here's the Amazon page for it. Do not buy it for that price. If you keep an eye on R/buildapcsales you can pick that headset up for around $250. Anything more than that and you should get a rift s as it offers better tracking.

I'm seeing huge price swings on that device, Amazon has them for $751 (sold by Samsung) while the Microsoft store has them for $279. I don't see any differences though, any idea why?

I'm seeing that the O+ has some issues with game compatibility, do you find this to be the case overall?

> Samsung O+ (which is a fantastic headset) complete and ready to go for well under $300 bucks these days

Where the hell do you guys get 300USD VR kits? In france they go for almost 1100USD. Check this out. Sams product but on Amazon.fr instead of Amazon.com.

https://www.amazon.fr/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT => 1080USD

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT =>325USD

This is ridiculous.

An Oculus Rift and Quest go for 750USD. 570USD for a Rift S. VR prices in France are completely retarded.

That's an original Rift, like others have said I'd save and purchase a Rift S. If you really can't manage $400 you might consider the Samsung Odyssey + it's an inferior set up (in my opinion) but mainly due to the WMR controllers.

However, if I have a choice between the Odyssey + or an OG Rift and at the same price it's no competition, the Samsung Odyssey + wins every time.

So is this the correct Odyssey+ everyone is talking about? There is TOO much information out there about these VR headsets that it all starts to jumble together. If I purchase the item below, is that all thats needed to race? I want to open the box, plug in, update/install software, and go race.

Yeah, and the video also has some blatant misinformation. For instance u/valvenewsnetwork claims:

>it is nearly impossible to get a brand-new VR kit for under $1000 even with the really cheap Windows mix reality sets going for nearly 800

But all one has to do is check Amazon to find for example HP's first WMR offering for $400, the Professional Edition version of the original Reverb for $660, the Odyssey+ for $495, and even the scalper prices on the Rift S and Quest aren't anywhere close to $1000. Beyond that, while getting one of the Oculus headsets for MSRP takes some diligence and patience it's far from impossible.

He also claims the HP comparable to the Oculus Touch when they don't have any finger tracking at all, and while I haven't seen it confirmed either way I suspect the grip input on HP's controller is just a simple button like previous WMR controllers rather than an analog trigger like the Touch.

If you already have PC with something like a GTX 1060 (6gb variant) and a recent ryzen CPU, it will work and the only thing that you would have to do is to literally just go down to Best Buy and buy either a Rift S for $399 or a Samsung Odyssey for $499 or you could get the Odysseys Plus for only $350 on Amazon.com (excluding shipping) or if you want a slightly more comfortable headset with a higher resolution, you can get the HP Reverb for around $699 on Amazon or for $639 at Best buy (or get a quest and a link cable, but the experience wont be as good because of compression and the 72Hz refresh rate but I can't confirm this for myself since I have not tried the Quest)

Current VR headsets with inside out tracking are around (if not slightly above) the prices of consoles. Also, this doesn't even consider buying something like a used Vive or Rift CV1.

Considering how relatively new of a technology VR is (at least in the consumer space), the progress that has been made in the last 3 years is honestly outstanding.

VR is getting cheaper, so stop lying to yourself and the rest of the internet. People bitched and moaned about having to get new PCs when Half-Life 2 came out because their Dell Dimension 2100s couldn't handle the processing required for the physics. This is another one of those moments. Half-Life Alyx without VR would be like Half-Life 2 without the physics, completely unplayable and stupid.

If you're open to an alternative, the Odyssey+ seems to be in stock on Amazon US . Although I'm pretty sure it was previously available for closer to $250 than $300, so you'd still be getting scalped a bit.

If the Rift S or Quest are definitely what you're after, I'm not aware of any restock notification services. Looking around on my preferred UK sites, most simply say "out of stock" but one of them lists an exact date and allows for a preorder. That particular site won't be useful to you, assuming you're in the US, but if you could find something similar on one of your sites that'd at least take the guesswork/frequent checking out of the equation. Of course, "find somewhere that'll let you reserve/preorder" barely counts as advice. Sorry!

Edit: NewEgg, B&H, Bestbuy and Walmart offer stock notifications, not that that'd solve the "sells out in 10 minutes" problem.

Edit again: If you're absolutely desperate, used Vives (original, not Pro/Cosmos/etc) run for $400-500 on eBay. Helps immensely if it comes with a Deluxe Audio Strap. I have a Vive myself (albeit with Index controllers) and while it's showing its age in terms of resolution (and the wands suuuck), it's still absolutely playable. Could maybe get the used set, and then sell it on when new Rifts seem to be back into normal production? That would still be a last-ditch effort, though. A new Odyssey+ would probably be better - I don't have one but a friend does and I've never heard bad things aside from the headset being a bit uncomfortable.
