NVME drive, like something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=NVMe+SSD&qid=1599668049&sr=8-3
But the only problem, AFAIK,is I CANNOT use it to install Windows and boot from it. And I won't be getting the high speeds of an M.2 SSD. But If i install this I wont have a place to install an extra video card (even 1050Ti) on my motherboard.
Am I correct in my assessment?
2 points • womble123
Just checked and your Motherboard has two M.2 slots so maybe pick up a Samsung Evo Plus M.2 SSD with at least 250GB: like this.

This one? Also since I’m new to pc sorry if this sounds obvious to you but when I get this do I need to replace the one I have or there’s a free slot where I can just plug this? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=m.2+ssd&qid=1597074089&sr=8-2

Well, it seems like I can't change the chipset fan settings in BIOS on the ASUS board for some reason, so I'm a little bit disappointed.
I would get the MSI MEG x570 Unify if it wasn't 322 euros in my country ( 350 USD ). However I think I won't have any other choice, because I don't want to pay 400+ euros for a motherboard now.
Is the Unify a reliable motherboard? I'm getting mixed results from people in different forums, subreddits. To be true, I would get a B450 board too if there wasn't so much problem with them in the past days, weeks.

> One thing I'd suggest is to upgrade your Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2 to a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 GB M.2.
It's about 45 USD more than the 970 Evo, so I'm hesitating a bit.

I have no experience with any of the items on your list, but I can confirm that this one absolutely rocks.
Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe / $115.80
The less expensive non-Plus model would probably be fine, but the rated write speeds on it are significantly lower.

M.2 is the name of the connector or slot if you will.
NVMe is the protocol used to communicate through it.
Your board has one M.2 slot supporting 2242/2260/2280/22110 form factors. These are physical sizes.
The M.2 slot can be configured in bios to operate either in SATA or PCIe mode.
Fastest NVMe config is in PCIe mode. Be aware, though, that when M.2 is set to PCIe mode, it will disable traditional SATA ports 4 & 5. If you have HDDs on these ports, they will have to be relocated to other ports.
So...
What you want to buy is a NVMe SSD that supports PCIe and has a form factor 2242 or 2260 or 2280 or 22110.
You can find one here.

Your title and descriptions of the 970’s are conflicting. But your time stamps shows them as 970 Plus. With that, they’re are brand new on Amazon right now for $120

You would need an SSD in the M.2 format such as this one. If your laptop is indeed from 2017, it's not going to be capable of playing much other than old, casual, or eSports titles at low resolution and in-game settings.

What hard drive are you going to use for Windows? I really hope you're not going to use one of those Seagate Barracudas for your main system hard drive. That will be a serious bottleneck to your system and anything other than an SSD is not recommended. I would recommend the Samsung 970 EVO Plus m.2 500GB.

Can you spot the bottleneck? Please help!
Guys, I have the following specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700X
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE A320M-S2H V2
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 2666MHz RGB
- GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8GB SC Black
- Storage: M.2 Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB & Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

What should I upgrade to run PUBG at 1080p at 144 consistent frames with Textures on Medium and Sharpen enabled?
Can someone please spot the bottleneck or give me tips on how to improve my performance. It runs like wonders in other games, this is the only game it gives me headaches, and none of the suggested tweaks helped!

so the 3 fans will fit? The ram is fine too? also decided to pony up a little more for a samsung evo 970 plus 500 gb and then a 1 tb western digital black hard drive if those are compatible as well, or if they're even worth the extra money to ensure no issues or errors.
1 points • VinnieT8x
Hey man the build looks great so far! Depending on what you are using this PC build for, the only thing I would switch out would be the m.2 SSD. Western Digital has a great rep for HDD's, but I truly see that Samsung seems to of mastered SSD's and you really do get what you pay for. Also Samsung Magician is a program you can install that is very nice and helps you maintain your SSD's health and performance. With that being said, below are my recommendations on (IMO the best reasonable choices) of SSD's that you cant go wrong with.
1TB Samsung 970 EVO - $179.99 - Gaming
Read / Write speeds up to 3,500MB/s and 2,500MB/s
500GB Samsung 970 EVO Plus - $119.99 - Video Editing
Read / Write speeds up to 3,500MB/s and 3,300MB/s
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I do believe Free-Sync 2 Monitors will connect up with G-Sync GPU's.

Surface Studio 2: cost to take RAM from 16GB to 32GB: +$700 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surface-studio-2/8SBJXM0M58T4/G652?activetab=pivot%3aoverviewtab
Also your SSD comparison isn't the same because you're comparing a SATA SSD to NVMe SSD. The SSD in the Mac Mini has R/W ~6x faster than the Samsung one you're talking about.
>Take, for example, the 1 TB Samsung 860 Pro, a 2.5-inch SSD with a maximum sequential read speed of 560 megabytes per second (MB/s). Its successor, the NVMe-based 960 Pro, is more than six times faster than that, with a top speed of 3,500 MB/s.

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S2T0B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=960%2BPro%2Bssd&qid=1587666321&refinements=p_n_feature_three_browse-bin%3A6797522011&rnid=6797515011&s=pc&sr=1-2&th=1
The upcharge from 500GB to 2TB is ~$400 (when it isn't on sale). So yes, the Apple upcharge is a bit more, but it isn't as crazy as you're claiming.
Again I say, if you compare similar computers (ones with similar build quality, components, and customer support) you end up with very similar pricing. Anything else has trade-offs.
- Build your own PC to save money -> no customer support, not small and light (you aren't building yourself a laptop).
- Buy a cheap PC -> no customer support, crappy build quality (plastic, awful trackpad, shitty quality (color, refresh, etc) screen).
- Buy an expensive PC -> expensive (probably good build quality and support)
- Buy a Mac -> expensive (good build quality and excellent support)

>M.2 NVMe
See I imagined it was that simple but was worried about the sizing for the laptop or something, is this not an issue? Why would they quote me such a high price... literally 5x the price.
So you think something like this will work: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=M.2+NVMe+SSD&qid=1600282693&sr=8-4
And I could potentially transfer the data over, or at the very least reinstall Windows.
1 points • DepressedElephant
Soo an NVME Raid 0 setup is x4 the cost?
OK.
Lets see: 1TB SSD - $140
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S
1TB NVME - $190
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/
500GB NVME - 109 x2 = $220
So please explain to me how you went from $140 vs $220 being "at 4-5x the cost."
This is why sources matter - because they don't let you keep spewing your absolute ignorance.

I went with 8 soldered and then I grabbed a 32gb. Double check on the crucial website, it lets you enter your laptop info and lets you know what will work.
they said 32gb would work in the t14 but everything I'm reading says a max of 32gb. I'm hoping they mean the expansion slot.

Think of in terms of the weakest link argument, and while this can still be considered an opinion, I would say the weakest component in your system in the HDD. HDD get slow with age, and also with capacity issues. They can last longer (with enterprise drives) for archival purposes, but the performance drives (like the WD Black HDD) all eventually suffer the same fate. SSD are far from perfect, but in general, quality SSD have tested to be more reliable long term than HDD. Whatever decision you make, I hope it helps. I can only recommend the order of upgrades for the most price/performance gain:
1) HDD -> SSD
2) RAM \^ (amount and speed)
3) tossup between better CPU and better video card.
Not sure what you run for power, I would say at least 500w for 1060, 550w for 2060, 650w for 1070 or 2070, 700-800w for 2080 and above.
Also, if your motherboard supports NVMe M.2, that type of SSD has even greater performance than the SATA SSD, multiple times increase in read and write speeds. But if you switch to that you will probably need to reinstall Windows and all games:

> 128GB SATA SSD to a 1TB M2 SSD
Broski, M.2 is a form-factor. SATA is an interface.
There are M.2 SATA drives. And then there are M.2 NVMe drives, hopefully you bought one of the latter.

Can someone breakdown for me the performance I can expect if I boot a Pi 4 off a USB 3 drive like this: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T5-Portable-SSD-MU-PA1T0B/dp/B073H552FJ vs an internal ssd like this that will need an adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ref=sr_1_4?crid=HBT52Q9QPFHC&dchild=1&keywords=m2+ssd&qid=1601816203&s=electronics&sprefix=M2+%2Celectronics%2C162&sr=1-4

SSD I used: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB
SSD I recommend: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7 or any other good quality 500GB drive.
So what I did was put a 2TB SSD into the empty m.2 slot and then used Samsung Magician to clone my existing one onto it. I now use the 2TB as my one and only SSD with OS, files, games, everything. For most people I’d recommend just filling the second slot with an additional SSD and choosing what to install to each. 500GB or 1TB should be fine.
RAM I used: https://www.amazon.com/CORSAIR-Vengeance-Performance-260-Pin-CMSX32GX4M2A2666C18/dp/B01BGZEVHU
The SSD size is worth upgrading, but the 16GB RAM that comes with it should be fine, however I noticed I was maxing it out on certain games with thing running in the background so I wanted to eliminate any performance issues and decided to double it. If you decide to upgrade it you might want to choose one with a higher MHz (if supported) as it’s more important with AMD CPU’s. I think 2666 MHz is fine for an Intel laptop though. Corsair sells really good RAM, but there are others out there.

I bought the same card and kit used from this video. Just make sure you download those two drivers too. I ordered this SSD yesterday.

Get an NVME M.2 SSD. PCIe 3 models are fine because B450 boards don’t support PCIe 4.
Best bang for the buck:
Higher end performance:

What is the full model number for your laptop?
If it supports a 2.5 hard drive and a NVME, I reccomend keeping the SSHD and getting a 500gb NVME drive as your Windows and primary programs/games drive.
If it supports only 2.5 hard drives, get a 1tb SSD or a larger size if your budget supports it.
A solid 2.5 inch 1 TB SSD from Samsung runs about $140. IIRC it drops to $120 ish on sale.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078DPCY3T
A solid 500 gb NVME SSD from Samsung costs about $100 to $120. The slight variation is if you want the newer model with a bit higher speed. I use the $100 one in my desktop. Never feels slow at all even when playing a game and downloading more big games in the background.
$100
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BN4NJ2J/
$120
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M7Q21N7/
In the best case scenario, you can buy a 512/500gb or even 1tb NVME drive to install Windows and maybe a few programs/tools like anti-virus and programming software you use regularly. Then keep the 2.5inch SSHD as bulk storage for games you play less often, storage for your downloads and programs you don't need to run too often or need super fast load speeds for.
You can check out www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/ to see check the current sales for SSD parts.

normally not. The NVME protocol is a standard, unless it's some obscure brand there's a chance they may not be entirely following the standard. But with samsung like that, zero chance. Lets say just about 99% of the nvme drives out there should work. Obviously 1 nvme drive isn't the other.
For example. The 1TB top of the line 970 EVO plus https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MFZY2F2/ will max out at around 3500MB read and 33-3400 on the writes. A more moderate budget Intel 665P 1TB https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Internal-Solid-State-SSDPEKNW010T9X1/dp/B0851L494L/ will max out at around 1500, but that's still 3x as fast as a standard sata SSD would allow for (M.2 or standard sata port, same max speed of around 550MB/s)
Though i wouldn't get that one. The standard EVO series have been updated with newer "EVO PLUS" models. This one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ is the newer model of the one you linked, just barely more expensive. Here's a performance comparison. https://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Samsung-970-Evo-NVMe-PCIe-M2-500GB-vs-Samsung-970-Evo-Plus-NVMe-PCIe-M2-500GB/m493995vsm700020

For a slightly faster experience,
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2B44SCLC8KAYY&keywords=samsung+500gb+ssd&qid=1580937211&sprefix=samsung+500%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-6 (500GB, $115.89. 1TB configurable at $199.99)
I haven't tried a non-pro version, so I can't give any verdict on the noticeable difference between the two. I've read a reasonable number of reviews to believe that there is a negligible difference in the user's experience in the speed.
XPS 13 is very easy to open. As for me, the laptop became drastically faster after changing to 1TB EVO plus. I have a 2017 version of XPS 13, and I also had the thermal strap. I don't think the strap serves any meaningful device as a thermal dissipator anyway, even with the original enclosure of SSD. So I think you can ignore that disclosure on the Dell website.
Good luck!

I bought it from a Finnish website since that's where I am, but I'll put in Amazon links here for your convenience.
Case: Fractal Design Define R6 My old case is also a Fractal Design, just much older. I'm really happy with their noise cancellation so I went with them again. The windowed one was on sale so I took that one.
MoBo: MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI No real reason why I took this one over some others, except that it came in a nice bundle offer with the CPU and RAM. The reviews seemed good enough too so complaints here.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X No reason to buy Intel at the moment. AMD has better performance for a lower price.
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB Came in the bundle, seemed good enough with 3200Mhz clocks
GPU: MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X I went back and forth with this and NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super. But in the end, their performance difference was very small while the price difference was 140€, AMD being cheaper of course. So I took this one, especially since I didn't place any value on having ray-tracing. This should be capable of running any game I want at 1440p / 60FPS(at least).
PSU: Seasonic 750W FOCUS GX-750 Had to upgrade from 550W to 750W. This is the exact same PSU that I have in my old PC, just more watts. Seems to work well and is affordable.
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U14S Stock CPU fans aren't usually enough so got a Noctua. They are a premium brand, but AMD components tend to heat up so putting more money into cooling is a solid plan. Might upgrade to water cooling later if I get into overclocking.
Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 500GB Fast but affordable SSD storage. I also have a SATA SSD and a 7200RPM HDD in my old PC that I'll hook up to the new PC, but this one will be OS and more demanding games.
Monitor: Samsung CJG5 Series 27-Inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) 144Hz 4ms Curved Gaming Monitor I've never really bought into the 1ms refresh rate hype. 5ms or below is quite enough for me since I don't play competitive. It seems to be a good monitor with the specs I need. Was on sale too, from 350€ to 250€.
