This is what I went for. It’s pretty steep, but that’s the lowest price ($250 USD at time of writing) it has ever been historically up to this point.

Some other options have showed up over at /r/BuildAPCSales as well. 👍🏼

a 2tb NVME SSD costs as much as the console itself

you could of course sacrifice some load time and go with SATA, but that would still be ~$250 for 2tb, like the only commenter pointed out.

you guys are all confusing these prices with HDD prices, the storage type that previous gens used. 2tb of HDD is only like $40 which is probably what you're all thinking of.

but all this talk of "no loadscreen" stuff does not happen on HDD, it has to be on an SSD, and at the speeds they're talking it has to be NVME SSD which is even more expensive.

You'll unfortunately be waiting quite a few years for this. Fast Gen 3 2TB SSDs aren't even close to this price point yet, never-mind the brand new Gen 4 which next-gen consoles use.

I agree. The Fuma 2 would be a better choice if you are trying to use the TG panel. Otherwise, the U12A would probably cool better than the U12S.

I am confused about all the fans as well.

Also, why get 2 1TB Samsung pro M.2's? For consumer use, the EVO Plus 970 2GB is close to the same performance for 1/2 the cost.

If you're looking for new thinkpads check out https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/epp_cocacola/

If you get prompted for a code (I didn't) try COKE*EPP

If that doesn't work do a little google searching.

I got a maxed(minus SSD) t14s with 5 years of every warranty + ultra dock + charger + USB ethernet adapter for under $2k. If only it'd f'ing ship...

Edit:. The SSD I bought: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S2T0B/dp/B07MFZXR1B/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=2tb+nvme&qid=1605575048&sprefix=2tb+&sr=8-3

Do you guys think this $370 price tag on this 2TB samsung nvme ssd will hold or should I get it now before it goes back up? I tried to check the price history on camelcamelcamel but it wasn't super indicative of whether I should just get it now or possible wait until black friday/zen 3 release (whichever comes first).

What do you guys think?

I'd probably go with a NVMe drive in a USB-C enclosure. Something like this.

I'd advise a Samsung drive of whatever size you choose. These, for example. Not totally necessary, but anything Samsung tends to be the most reliable SSD.

My upgrades

I don't have any pretty workstation porn pictures to share with you, but I'm satisfied with my meticulously planned configuration so I wanted to share.

I bought the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, Mid 2019 FHD 2080 RTX (RZ09-03018). My needs are easily enumerated:

  • I live in NYC, which is new for me, and my fiance and I have *very* little room in our luxury shoebox. I wanted to game on a PC and needed something powerful that I could easily put away at the end of the night.
  • I chose a 1080p screen rather than 4k (UHD) because I primarily wanted a machine that I could use for gaming and while I love 4K displays as a software developer, I know that GPUs (especially laptops GPUs) just aren't there yet and I wanted my gaming sessions to happen in a native resolution when I could only use the laptop because of space constraints. I can always dock the laptop and use external 4K displays when I have the room again.
  • I specifically bought before Razer updated the Blade with their new keyboards, because I wanted travel in my keyboard for programming -- which many reviewers noted was lost in the new design.

I've installed three major upgrades which I always planned on and were all easy to perform:

  • HyperX Impact 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 (Amazon)
  • Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB (Amazon)
  • Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 Module (Amazon)

I also have a Naga Ultimate and Mamba that I have to dutifully put away every night.

It's great for gaming in my shoebox and serves my needs as a developer when I need to use it for development. Honestly, my only criticism as a software developer is that Razer Synapse 3 has been in beta for over two years now, which to me signals they might forever keep it in beta which we all know is just ridiculous.

My little machine.

If you are handy, cheap, and want a "good enough" Mac until the ARM ones come out, I suggest you get a used or refurb MacBook Pro Retina 13" early 2015 (MacBookPro12,1) or MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid 2015 (MacBookPro11,4-11,5), then follow the instructions on this page to upgrade to a four-lane 1 or 2TB NVMe SSD drive. You could get a very nice Mac with a huge SSD for under $1k.

Could someone explain to me the whole lane sharing thing on PCIe when it comes to NVMe SSDs? I have a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master-CF and I am planning on getting this NVMe SSD: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S250B/dp/B07MFZXR1B.

In my mobo's manual, it says the M2P connector (bottom most connector) shares bandwidth with the PCIeX4 slot. Here are my questions:

If i use this connector, can i configure the SSD to take up all 4x, thereby making the PCIeX4 slot unusable?
Does doing that take away from the GPU bandwidth at all, or does the 16X slot have the bandwidth all to itself (assuming no dual-GPUs)?

r/buildapc • comment
1 points • SeismicLoad

  1. Yes, any X570/B550 mobo will be compatible out of the box with all 5000 series CPU's.
  2. As long as you go with an X570/B550 board, you will not need a BIOS flash/update.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the RGB controller questions as I don't have enough experience to give valid input.

I will just say that instead of the 2TB 860 EVO, you can actually get a 2TB 970 EVO Plus for the same price right now on Amazon:

Hey NewMaxx,

I purchased a couple of drives recently for my new build (X570 TOMAHAWK Motherboard) when they were on sale at Amazon. Trying to make sure I pick the right one for my use case, which will be to store games and instrument samples for music projects.

I haven't unboxed either of these yet- which would you recommend?

From the brief research I've done, my assumption is that the EVO Plus would be better for long term use since it's TLC, vs the QLC Sabrent? Drive will likely get fairly full- I have a little under 1TB of music samples/projects alone.

Or would you recommend waiting for a newer 2TB drive- perhaps there something coming in the near future with substantially better specs than these options for the price? Thanks for your time and help!

Fair enough!

I have pretty much decided what I am going to get. I found the Thinkpad E15 (i5 Processor) model with the backlit keyboard can be purchased from the Lenovo website directly for $729 (after coupon code is applied). By default, this build has 8 GB Ram (upgradeable) and 256GB PCIe SSD.

I will then open the laptop and put in a Samsung EVO 970 2 TB SSD, and a Crucial DDR4 2666 SODIMM Ram. I will use Acronis True Image to Clone the original Windows installation from the laptop when I receive it, cloning the OS to the new EVO 970 SSD, before opening the computer and putting the new SSD inside.

I am hoping I have accounted for every aspect of this project, but please tell me if you see any glaring problems with my strategy. Based off of the Spec Sheet for the Thinkpad E15, the Samsung EVO 970 AND the Crucial RAM I will order ought to be compatible. Having said that, would you mind just glancing over the items I am ordering and confirm these are compatible? I can recall one example in the past when I ordered an incorrect chip for a computer and it was quite a headache to solve that problem afterwards.

Hi having a trouble in here because got this Razer Blade Pro 17 (2019) Intel® Core™ i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHzBought 2 of this Samsung 970 EVO Plus Series - 2TB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V7S2T0B/AM) for storage and This 2 64gb RamMushkin Essentials – DDR4 Laptop DRAM – 64GB (2x32GB) SODIMM Memory Kit – 2666MHz (PC4-21300) CL-19 – 260-pin 1.2V Notebook RAM – Dual-Channel – Low-Voltage – (MES4S266KF32GX2)

overall it's a quite good upgrade for me so when i'm in idle mode or just watching youtube or having multiple application turn on it's on 75C the minimum i saw is 55C when there's no single application running sometimes it ramp up to 65C but my main problem is i'm having a Thermal Throttling And Power Limit Throttling and hitting 90C to 100C everytime i play a game on max settings and when i check it on Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility i didn't touch any configuration yet on Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility but on my Razer Blade Synapse my Performance is on Custom Modify Specification and CPU and GPU are on High.

So i don't know if i need to Re-paste it because i keep searching online video if someone did manage to Re-paste Razer Blade Pro 17 (2019) with no problem at all.

Right now i'm planning to Re-paste is with 2 of Thermalright Liquid Metal Thermal Paste, 79 W/mK High Performance, Silver King Heatsink Paste, CPU for All Coolers, 1 Grams with Cleanser and Spreader and put some 2 of Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8 Thermal Pad, 120 × 20 × 1.0 mm, 2-Pack on the SSD and RAM

TLDR: Get a 2TB 7200RPM HDD if you're on a budget. Get a 1TB or 2TB SATA SSD if you can afford it, it will be very, very fast. Both suggestions are assuming you'll have this installed inside your device.

If you're getting an external drive, just make sure you specify "external" and make sure you have a USB 3.0 (it will either be a blue USB port will have USB SS [super speed] labeled next to the port) or USB C port or you won't see the benefits from speed.

Solid brands for drives include Seagate, Western Digital, Crucial, & Sandisk. I personally prefer Crucial.

It seems like the drive is not your issue here, though. If you've got a Dell (Alienware is their gaming brand) or HP (Omen is their gaming brand) then you can load into hardware diagnostics when you start up your computer to see if you've got any faulty hardware. (Search "hardware diagnostics for insert brand of PC here)

Otherwise you can check the task manager) as many here have mentioned) to see what component is being pushed hardest when you experience these issues.

For anyone curious about the general differences between drive types:

HDD = Hard Disk Drive

These use a physical spinning disc inside of the casing to read and write data. Like a tiny, super fast record player. These generally come in two speeds (RPM) 5400 & 7200. 7200 is much faster. If you're on a low budget, you will get much more raw storage for the price with an HDD. Get a 7200 RPM though, because the 5400 are very slow in comparison.

SSD = Solid State Drive

These run off the same sort of technology that a flash/thumb drive uses. These are lightning fast in comparison to HDDs but are more expensive per GB. There are also 2 variants of SSDs, SATA (which uses the same connection as an HDD, and has a max speed of about 600MB per second) and NVME SSDs which are 3x to 5x faster than than SATA. These come in a different form factor called M.2. Be careful buying NVME as they need special, newer hardware to utilize. Note that their is a SATA variant of the M.2 form factor, so if you get a SATA SSD make sure it isn't a M.2 if you don't have a connection for it.

Examples:

-2TB SATA SSD

-2TB SATA HDD

-2TB SSD External Drive

-2TB External HDD

-2TB NVME SSD

I got one, thanks to OP!!! Now to find 2x16GB of 3200 Mhz RAM and an SSD.

I was thinking of getting this $99 kit from Neweeg with good reviews for the RAM: https://www.newegg.com/team-32gb-260-pin-ddr4-so-dimm/p/N82E16820331504?Description=team%20elite%203200%20sodimm&cm_re=team_elite%203200%20sodimm-_-20-331-504-_-Product

Hey u/iBUYPOWER-Brad Thank you for the response, and the clarification! It is much appreciated. After writing I realized the OS install was a partition on the SSD, with a secondary Western Digital 1TB mechanical drive (I honestly have no idea where that thing is even nestled in the case, props to you guys for that one.)

For the NVME I was looking at https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S2T0B/dp/B07MFZXR1B/

And SATA https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-SATA-Internal/dp/B078C515QL/

which are both fairly solid (if a bit on the pricey side, but I've had enough HDD failures in the past to be comfortable with shelling out a bit more cash for more longevity and security)

But, it sounds like either choice will be A-OK, keeping the stock SSD as secondary storage/scratch disk for certain programs.

edit: clarified a lil bit.

I took a similar route and bought the R7 T14 with 16GB soldered RAM, the 400nit screen, and all the other not easily user replaceable upgrades available (thumbprint, smartcard, backlit). I wasn't as concerned with memory timings vs. wanting the maximum possible 3200mhz RAM, so I added with the following once I received the laptop:

32GB DDR4 3200Mhz SODIMM - https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-SODIMM-260-Pin-Memory/dp/B07ZLC7VNH

2TB NVMe 2282 SSD - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S2T0B/dp/B07MFZXR1B

512TB NVMe 2242 SSD - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital-PC-SN520-NVMe-SDAPMUW-512G-1101-512GB-M-2-2242-PCIe-NVMe-SSD/114216855036

You lose some RAM performance due to the non-uniform memory configuration, but for running 10+ VMs on my laptop, the slight performance hit is well worth the added capacity. I'm running Fedora 33 (just came out of beta this morning) and have ZERO complaints about this laptop. Best I've ever owned.

Hey guys, first time posting here, sorry if this is long for this thread. I'm not great with computers and I had a friend build one for me a few years back. I've begun to run out of room on my current setup and would like to add more storage. I'm not sure if my motherboard is compatible with the storage I would like to use and I have a few questions based off of that.

This is my equipment.

My motherboard: MSI X99A SLI PLUS https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813130841?

The storage I would like to use: Samsung 970 EVO plus 2 TB. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MFZXR1B/ref=twister_B07NLZ58HW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I asked the friend that built my PC about upgrading and he said he's not sure I can use the NVME storage, he can only see SATA compatibility, I just wan to make sure we're not missing something.

Questions:

Is this storage compatible with my system?

If compatible, am I right to say that I can only have one m.2 drive on this motherboard?

If this storage is not compatible my backup is to use this https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0786QNSBD/ref=dp_ob_title_ce?th=1 . I already have two 500GB of these drives installed and I'm wondering how many more of this type of drive I can install without any additional equipment.

Thank you guys so much!
