Sabrent Rocket I've read online they are one of the bests drives for the money. Currently sittings with one in my cart, 1TB for just under $120 USD. 3200 Mb per second DTR and PCI Express x4.
it's got close to the same stats as the Samsung 970 EVO Plus but $60.00 USD cheaper.

Hey all, didn't want to make a new thread so I hope this is the right place, I am going to get a new Samsung SSD and plan to just take out my old SATA SSD (which is my boot drive). What I want to do is transfer everything from my current SATA SSD into the new Samsung SSD. How can I go about doing this? If it matters, my motherboard is an MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX and the old SATA SSD is an ADATA 120 GB (I think).

IIRC the 970 EVO is a better overall drive, but this one is pretty close. If you're just looking for more storage I'd buy a cheaper drive. Actually, checking right now, the 970 EVO Plus is also on sale.

Stuff a 1TB M.2 NVME SSD card in your M.2 port. Put your footage on that and you will see huge improvements even on the timeline previews.

I bought an Acer Nitro 5. It has an empty hard drive bay, so I’m planning to install an SSD. The SSD that’s included in it is a 256 GB PCle NVMe, and the description states that there are two PCle M. 2 slots.

I’m looking at this SSD It’s a Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD M. 2 NVMe interface internal SSD.

My questions:

  1. I’m fairly certain that it will fit, but just to be sure because I’m an amateur: will this SSD fit the laptop I’m getting?
  2. This laptop will primarily be used as a gaming laptop and also used for schoolwork for grad school (at most, I’ll be using Word, Excel, maybe some statistics programs). Is 500 GB enough or should I invest in the 1 TB SSD?
  3. This laptop comes with a 16 GB DDR4 2666 MHz RAM card with a slot for an additional card. Would it be overkill if I got another 16 GB DDR4 2666 MHz RAM card to put in there?

HDD’s are mechanical hard drives. They’re on their last legs and eventually will be completely discontinued as SSD prices keep going down.

SSDs are similar to RAM chips just that they’re able to retain data while RAM isn’t. There are no moving parts.

Even SSDs themselves aren’t created equal! The USB 3.0 SSD as well as the 2.5” SATA SSDs are much much slower then PCIe 3.0/4.0 NVMe aka m.2. These NVMe drives are ultra fast. 2-3 GB/s and faster! These are the drives that the 2016 and newer MacBook Pros ship with.

This is the Samsung 970 EVO:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07MFZY2F2/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile

The problem is that we can’t take advantage of their speed with the current consoles but hopefully this is the type of drive that I hope MS and Sony choose for the Series X and PS5.

You need a "T5 sized Torx". If you're unfamiliar, that's exactly what the tool is called. Google that bad boy.

Definitely something to help pry it open. MAKE SURE it's made of something soft, like plastic. You can mark up your case otherwise. There's quite a few clips around the chasis, and they can be hard and a bit nerve-wracking to pry open the first time. Don't be afraid to put some elbow grease into it. Open it from the front to the back. Pry open under the touchpad first, and work your way around the case towards the screen hinges.

For another NVME drive, I installed this bad boy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MFZY2F2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a wicked fast drive. Very nice.

Last tip, the second screw for an extra drive does not come with the 9500, so I'd recommend buying a "misc computer screw" pack to make sure you can secure the new drive in place.

That is going to be your biggest impact to performance. You would be better to replace the Kingston sata SSD with an M.2 NVME SSD.

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2/

Install your OS and games on the single SSD and that should greatly improve your performance.

Interestingly enough, there is a Samsung 970 EVO plus for the exact same price on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BN217QG?pf_rd_r=0X56QW2Q8PXPY4DX5QP4&pf_rd_p=edaba0ee-c2fe-4124-9f5d-b31d6b1bfbee

I also found a different model for a slightly higher price ($168). Not sure what the difference is though:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2/ref=psdc_1292116011_t1_B07BN217QG

Since the price difference is negligible to me, should I just settle for the Samsung if it's "higher end"?

I went through Dell Support and also created an earlier thread on here to make sure the SDD I purchased would fit, so I knew I could upgrade it, I just didn't know the process.

I don't even need to copy over any of my files or programs (this laptop was only just purchased 2 weeks ago).

I just need to be able to boot it on the new drive (when I replace the SDD it comes up with an "unable to boot" option). I assume this is because I don't have anything installed on the new SDD as akg7091 pointed out.

So, what you're saying is that I need to purchase a SSD holding device to download Windows to it? Couldn't I just load windows to a USB and after installing the new SSD boot it through the USB? If so, I'd prefer that route since I have a USB, but I don't have a SSK SSD Enclosure Adapter.

For reference:

This is what I purchased.

This is my laptop.

That does look like the same part number. I took the exact model number from the memory compatibility list on the asrock website. Normally, I wouldn't care so much and go cheap but I wanted this build to be as stable as possible so I didn't deviate from their "approved" list. 32GB modules will allow expansion to 128GB later for me. ECC is always preferred in a server as well and worth the small premium IMO.

The SSD I got a little while ago but it should be this one here:

Other things to look for: a quiet power supply, quiet case fans, and a large, quiet CPU cooler.

BTW, for best performance, make sure your SSD is a M.2 NVMe type, that connects directly to the motherboard, such as this:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2/ref=sr_1_6?crid=MVT8GXNTKQRQ&dchild=1&keywords=ssd+1tb&qid=1595891387&sprefix=ssd%2Caps%2C218&sr=8-6

Personally, I build my own so I can get the specs I want.

I could do this but I’m looking at 2TB. My existing laptop is using a 850 Pro (bought 5 years ago at a high cost) and it is already 90% filled. I think I might delay this purchase for a couple more months as my existing laptop is still working. I’m wondering why Samsung doesn’t have a 2TB for the 970 Pro. The 960 Pro has a 2TB drive but has a significantly lower review score than 970 Evo and Evo plus -

As u/harshmf has said, the 970 Evo plus looks like the best choice for now. Only the pro uses MLC name while rest are using TLC nand, I’m researching on the stability of the TLC band.

Crucial 1TB NVMe: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0784SY515

Samsung 970 EVO Plus: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2

The Samsung drive has higher read/write speeds than the Crucial, however both of these options would be much faster than a mechanical drive or SATA SSD (which is what your Intel drive is).

Keep in mind since I don't know what your current motherboard is, I can't recommend purchasing that now. These drives will work for the motherboard you have in your pcpartpicker list. If your current board doesn't have an M.2 NVMe slot, you won't be able to use them.

If you're looking for a more "traditional" SSD that you'd install internally with a SATA cable I'd recommend the WD SSD I recommended earlier because it's a great price for what you get, and you're looking at saving money for a new build.

Uh cause the 'Pro' line is meant for a specific use case and is meant to last much longer. You don't need a 'Pro' level SSD for a PC/Gaming setup. These are more suited for a server setup when people create VMs and do constant writes (cloud servers for AWS/Azure might use this). Remember writes are what kills a SSD but console gaming isn't write heavy. It is more read focused as once you write a game to SSD, rarely does the base file change.

The 970 'Plus' model is available on Amazon for 180 bucks for 1TB: Source. In fact the price went up recently as this was selling for around 160 just a couple of days back.

Here is a better much more faster option: https://www.newegg.com/sabrent-1tb-rocket-q4/p/0D9-001Y-00049 which is PCIe 4.0 and much faster than the XSX/XSS drive.

I currently have an Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD that I bought like 4 years ago. I'm looking to upgrade this SSD to something more modern (it currently runs my OS).

Currently looking at the deals I see Crucial MX500 2TB 3D NAND SATA for $180 while there's a [Samsung (MZ-V7S1T0B/AM) 970 EVO Plus SSD 1T M.2 NVMe] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2/ref=pd_di_sccai_2/137-9087279-8341117?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07MFZY2F2&pd_rd_r=b998f97d-bf7d-4106-b67a-6a757023c1aa&pd_rd_w=MORTR&pd_rd_wg=7PE10&pf_rd_p=5415687b-2c9d-46da-88a4-bbcfe8e07f3c&pf_rd_r=QVNSMP0K89ZECZBMDJGG&psc=1&refRID=QVNSMP0K89ZECZBMDJGG) for $170.

I guess the current argument is space vs speed. I like to game and use my pc for VR. Would would be more of a value for me? Is upgrading to NVME worth the upgrade?

For a little more, I suggest swapping the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB (SATA) with a 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS (NVME). So much faster for about $20 more. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S1T0B/dp/B07MFZY2F2

It’s certainly not the cheapest option but it was on sale and can’t go wrong with Samsung drives. It’s a gen3 NVMe so it won’t work in the internal expansion slot you need gen4 for that.

I know it’s not necessary but I wanted to go 100% SSD. I got the digital edition and plan to put 1tb NVMe gen4 in the expansion slot once Sony allows it. I have noticed while transferring data from the HDD and swapping back and forth that the external HDD lags the OS but as you can see from the one test I did above minimal difference in load times atleast with GoT.

If price doesn't matter go with this drive. It's very fast and also reliable. If price does matter and you want a more bang for your buck SSD, then go with this one. The HP SSD is slower, but you likely wouldn't notice much of a difference in day to day use. Either way you cant go wrong with either.

[Build Upgrade] Adding an SSD

Hey guys! Looking to add an SSD, my friend basically built my PC 4-5 years ago. I am wondering if there's anything I need to check inside my tower for compatibility for an SSD or if its mostly just plug and play. The two I am looking at are listed below and I am considering just waiting as NewEgg and Amazon both have sales coming up on the 13th. Please let me know what you think :). Thanks
