If anyone is interested, these are the grow lights I've been using for the last few years. I only had 1 light in the living room this winter as the others have been placed around the house. Bought 5 and just ordered 2 more.

I’ve had the cooperi under the light for 4ish months continuously now- my apartment gets lackluster light most of the year. I have them on a timer for about 10 hours of light a day, and the lights are just full spectrum LED grow lights that i got from amazon. i’ve had them for about a year now and they’re very good.

I went with this light based on suggestions from this subreddit and have seen a big improvement over the rod setup you have now. I still use them for other plants but these work incredibly well.

Mine flowers maybe every 3 months after I got it some dedicated plant lights ( these LED ones, just an example - lots of options). I keep the lights on a timer, 8am-8pm. Before the lights it was kind of small, not doing well. But it really seems to like the lights. I'm moving it to a larger pot after I read up on what kind of soil they like.

Check that you've got drainage, and that it get a little water. I wait until I see the leaves slightly dimple and then water it (just a little). I also pushed one of those plant-food sticks in the dirt. (No idea of those are the right things to do, but mine seems happier now.)

I have them on a windowsill where they get light all day and I thought that would be enough combined with the grow light (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07C68N7PC?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) at night but they're still etiolated :(

I use these grow lights in my kitchen. I also bought an outlet timer so I don’t have to turn it on and off every day which has been super helpful. I usually have them on all day, around 12-13 hours. I like these because they don’t have the weird pink lighting and they aren’t horribly unstylish so that they fit in a home setting better then most grow lights. There are better more pricey options if you’re looking for the highest quality but these work very well for me.

These ones! I chose them because the bulbs are replaceable. I have noticed a different with some of my succulents that were lying flatter and they are now more compact. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty happy with them.

I think there’s a review thread or recommendations on grow lights in the sidebar, but you can also search for the term grow light in this thread. It’s been asked a lot. Tons of grow lights are small, perfect for a handful of succulents. There won’t be any big ones hanging from the ceiling because that’s too far away for it to work lol! 😆 I got mine on amazon and it does a pretty good job, just gotta keep it really close https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C68N7PC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_W-LhEb511WFBB

I have these: LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C68N7PC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

But! the price doubled since I bought them. I assume that look-alikes function the same, though, and would probably yield the same results.

I have noticed that folks saying these don’t work frequently had the lights far away from the plants. I keep mine only 3-5 inches away, and just move my plants around or angle the lights towards different plants (my favorites) every few days. I keep them on for ~10-12 hrs/day. Would recommend!

I keep it pretty close.

Average temp: lowest 65 (at night) high 85 So maybe it is getting to cold for them.

This is super helpful. I’m going to be prepared for summer and get some of that fertilizer.

You can get a small grow light for about $33 on Amazon. You can get a few cheaper, but search for 'full spectrum grow light'.

This is my first VFT, and I am wondering what I should do about dormancy. I live in SE Michigan so outdoor growing is not possible. Currently the plant is around a year old and lives in my office at work. I work in an interior room with no natural sun light. I have a full spectrum grow light on a timer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C68N7PC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_vj-XFbVFBHPW4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I have been running the timer for about 12 hours right now stepped down from 16. From my underatanding it is the shortening of daylight that triggers dormancy.

I have a heated garage and west facing window. I believe would make a good winter home for my plant. The garage stays around 40-50 degrees, just enough to melt snow off my truck overnight. Right now the max possible sunlight around here is 9ish hours. The window is west facing so it would be even shorter than that all winter.

Should I just move my plant and be done? Should I step the light down to like 10 hours before a move? Is it strong enough to enter dormancy or should I up the light for a healthier plant?

I do also have one of these. It wasn’t really for the bay plants, but it works ok, if you have an appropriate place to clamp it. And because it’s a white light, it’s not so jarring in a room as a pink grow light tends to be.

Plants (~75) - Cheap led grow light like this ~$30, DIY matten filter (foam ~$5, PVC ~$5), dirt ~$0-5, aquabid or /r/aquaswap low tech package ~$30

20 long tank, w/ lid - $40 at the dollar per gallon sale

Good heater, adjustable - ~$30

Air pump+airstones - ~$20

substrate - smooth landscaping gravel ~$5?

hardscape - $0, go play in a lake or river and grab some wood, keep an eye out for nice rocks

The first link is the kind I use for lower light plants, added to the light from the north facing window they're near. The other two links have lights that are really bright and good for lots of higher light plants

These are the ones I have and, after six months of daily use on a timer, I have no complaints! However, if you're like me and are the type of person who sometimes needs help opening tough jars, you might need to phone a friend to help with the clip! These also look similar for slightly cheaper, but I don't have them so I won't make a recommendation.

I got this light for Christmas:

I am a total newbie, so there might be more knowledgeable people on here with better recommendations but I am very happy with this light and my philadendron tetraspermata put out three new leaves this month so I must be doing something right haha

Hi! I can help with this! I live in a 12x12 studio with my fiancee and pittie, so I feel your struggle.

I'm not very savvy with specs, but I've been using these two grow lights for the past couple of months and my succs have been very happy! They don't get any additional. sunlight besides the lights and I just keep the heads a couple inches above my boys. Some of them are even stressing, so I think that lights are up to snuff. I think I would recommend the 3 headed option (mainly cause it has a timer). But the heads on the two headed guy are a little larger. Either way, I'm a hella novice but no one seems to be etiolating, so I'd recommend both the lights!!

Looks to me like that is a ficus retusa (ginseng ficus). Ginseng ficus can generally be “indoor” bonsai, but you’re gonna need a bit more light than a desk lamp. It may be a good idea to put it by the window AND installing grow lights like these or these if you want something more budget friendly, but do keep in mind that the first would be better. If you want to keep it on your desk, you can use the second ones because they clip onto desks, but be aware that these lights have lesser output and they wouldn’t have the boost from the light coming from the window. If you have somewhere to stick the strip lights on the desk that would allow them to shine down on the tree, that would be second best to keeping it by the window with the strip lights shining down from the top of the windowsill. Hope this helped!

Would these do? “60W equivalent”. I only like “soft white lights” 😩 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B0M9XCC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_UmQDFb3SBPDEC

If not, I was looking at this grow light, and I could leave it on while I sleep lol. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C68N7PC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KnQDFbC1RYCAT

The sun has already shifted behind some trees and I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse when the clock changes.
