+1 for the Lose It app, even the free version is fantastic. It’s crazy how little changes can have a huge impact... for me what helped was dropping down fried foods and refined carbs, making sure my meals were loaded with protein and drinking a big glass of water before every meal. RenphoRenpho makes a really high value scale with Bluetooth and an app that helps track BMI, body fat, and all sorts of stuff. Logging that once a week and watching the charts move really makes you feel powerful about your progress.

Personally I own one of these, at best this'll give you a somewhat rough estimate of your BF% so it should be used as a reference not neccessarily taken as written in stone, but it's good enough for a quick check at home. There's also a measuring tool called skinfold calipers I believe, those are a little bit more rudimentary though and involve literally pinching your skin with calipers in several areas to measure body fat lol. If you want a more/the most accurate measure of your body fat you'll want to get a DXA scan or something of that nature to get a comprehensive and accurate readout of your body composition and what not.
Just like anything else though, even if it's not the most accurate thing in the world it's better to have some sort of reference point than none at all imo!

need a new scale and I see that a lot of them track more then just weight. how accurate are these scales and are they useful for tracking weight loss and gaining muscle?

I have this scale and it’s great so far, syncs up to my Apple health and MFP automatically and gives some interesting trend graphs and figures. Also doesn’t break the bank cost wise.

Comes with an app, that syncs via Bluetooth, not sure how accurate the body composition analyzer is, but the weight is to very accurate. It’s also nice to see a graph.

I used this one and while it may not be accurate as none are, its consistent so if you start at 16% when you get to 15% you will likely have really dropped a percent, it consistently went down as my weight went down, very consistent for the price

If you need a few extra apps for the diet part (since exercise alone is usually not enough), i can recommend Lose It!
for calorie tracking and Mealime
for healthy meals planning.
One extra thing that might help, get a bathroom scale that syncs to apple health (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01N1UX8RW). For me, it really helped a lot to see the graph of my weight progress as the diet goes by. Although, fair warning, it may generate some anxiety when you see the graph going the other way.
Good luck 💪️
(don't rush it, losing weight the right way takes time, effort and consistency)

I have a Renpho scale i got off amazon that cost like $30-40 (https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01N1UX8RW)
Here's how its results compared to my InBody Scan:
Weight - within .4lbs of each other Skeletal Muscle Mass - There is a 10% difference b/w the two Body Fat Mass - a 5% difference BMR - a 12% difference.
Of course I dont know which one is right - but I will say this $30 scale is "close enough" to give a "sense" of things... and I can do it anytime i want in the morning.

When I weigh myself my scale will show a wife range of weights. Example, weighed myself first thing this morning came up as 166. Stepped off - let the info clear - step on again 188. Is the scale broken?
1 points • thescaryitalian
I had this problem last year! It's super annoying because as a petite woman, everything counts! Not to be sales-pitchy, but I got this Renpho smart scale (I've recommended it here before and so have many others), and you're supposed to step on and off to calibrate the scale to 0 before you actually weigh yourself. It's definitely worth the $30, especially because it connects to an app that also tracks BMI, BMR, muscle, body fat %, all that extra stuff. Even if those readings aren't always accurate, I like being able to see the data trends.

We use this. You can track your weight and other metrics on you phone if desired. We've had it for 3 years. My son wrestles for his High School, and there has never been a "but my scale at home was off..." moment.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but you can buy a number of home scales that measure body fat and other details via resistance monitor. Personally I use a renpho scale with the included app. Great product and great tracker. A lot of options on the app for what you're looking for. Looks like it's around $30 on Amazon right now; not sure where else you'd buy it: https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01N1UX8RW

ohhh alright, that actually makes more sense since i don’t see myself getting fat persay, but im walking around a lot more than i was before the weight spiked (i know this contradicts the foot injury thing, it hurts a lot to walk , but i have to, this is being addressed by doctor:) ) so i’m guessing it could just be muscle? do u know if those body fat scales are actually worth looking into? like this

Holy crap. Are you me?!
First off - congratulations!! :)
Secondly - I have literally the same stats - 31F, 5'4"-5".
My highest weight last year was 143 lbs. My GW is also 115 (maybe 120), and I just re-committed to CICO because spinning away my weight wasn't working while eating whatever my cravings dictated. :( I'm currently 134 lbs, but I am DYING to get to 125, lol.
I love that you got a stepper! I was lucky to have purchased a Peloton prior to all these shenanigans, so I just use that and their accompanying classes (I use their bodyweight strength classes too).
Also, do you manually log in your weight? If you do, check out smart scales!! I purchased this one off Amazon (oof, it was $33 when I bought it; currently showing $39), and it's amazing lol. It measures your weight and estimates body fat %, BMI, and all these other things along with your BMR.
Anyway, good luck on reading your GW!! :) Go us!

Amazing keep it up! The real weight loss happens after the initial water weight from the first week. Don’t falter when the scale goes up in day, it could happen due to eating more carbs than usual as they make you retain water. If you want a scale recommendation I purchased this 2 months ago and it is amazing. It tracks your water weight, muscle mass, BMI, and body fat so you can figure out what’s going on. It’s such a steal for $30.

I consume 1200 calories on average daily but I do not exercise (outside of walking 10K steps avg/day & swimming). I have this scale and I’ve found my BMR changes with my weight loss.

I’ve heard it helps! I use a smart scale. If you don’t have one I HIGHLY recommend the Renpho. It’s on sale right now and so worth it! You can save your measurements and it gives you great ways to compare your progress and track it. Link to some examples.. Hoping this can help some other people if you already have a smart scale. :)

May I suggest investing in a smart scale? It's the one thing that has really kept me on my path. Yesterday I hit the 20lbs down mark!
It helps because if you don't lose weight, you can see that the weight actually changed from fat to muscle and you don't feel as bad! ha!
I got my scale off amazon for $35 and absolutely LOVE it.
(just think of it as money that would have been spent on food!)

For the hardgainer: How I bulk
I deleted my previous thread as it wasn't formatted well and not clear. I rewrote this in hopes to help those who have trouble gaining and holding on to weight. I'm 5'10 and went from 150 to 162lbs (7lbs muscle, the rest water and fat) in my first 30 days. This has worked great for bulking, getting stronger, and feeling healthier which is what I needed as a hardgainer. The purpose of this post is to eliminate complexities and keep the process stupid simple to maximize your chances of success in healthy gains.
Three Components
On your journey to gains, there are three components you need to pay attention to: Body Composition (weight, BMI, body fat %, muscle mass, etc), Diet, and Strength. Only two of these three have to be closely tracked in order to drive progress. The easiest two to monitor are BC and Strength. Monitoring diet is far more tedious and can be managed more loosely (see 'Diet' below).
Component 1: Body Composition (BC)
To monitor BC, use a smart scale with an app. I use this one HERE. For consistency, I weigh myself every Sunday morning before breakfast (after bathroom). The trend feature will confirm your progress across over a dozen BC metrics.
Component 2: Strength
To monitor Strength, use an app that will track the progression of your strength increases. I use the nSuns app and do the 5-day program. Add a few accessory exercises daily (particularly pull exercises) and you have a complete workout. You can find out more about this program HERE. Note that you MUST lift if you want to gain muscle mass. Doing a cardio program instead of a lifting one will negate the gains you're expecting.
Component 3: Diet
To monitor Diet, don’t. Monitoring diet is far more tedious so instead set a baseline daily calorie and protein intake. For me that is 3,000 calories. How do I eat at least 3,000 calories daily? I eat the same breakfast, lunch, and dinner that I had before, but now I incorporate two daily smoothies - one between each meal. The smoothies are about 1500 calories combined. Add in a bedtime snack and I know that I’m comfortably hitting my 3k threshold without gorging myself. Get a good blender (Vitamix and Blendtec are the best) and experiment with making good tasting, healthy, 700+ calorie smoothies.
More on Diet
The key to a good diet is eating healthy and staying hydrated. Other than a whole food multivitamin, I don’t take pills as it’s a chore I know I won’t be consistent with. The ingredients in my smoothies substitute the need for supplement pills and gives me a consistent, healthy diet to support my BC and Strength gains. I made minimal adjustments to my diet otherwise. I can provide more insight on my nutrition if requested.
I hope this helps somebody and good luck!

I've been pregnant twice and had to lose the weight in 6 months each time. Do this and you will drop .4 pounds per day to an average of 2.4 pounds per week:
-
Download MyFitnessPal. Create a profile and set your weight loss goal to two pounds per week.
-
Don't trust yourself to count calories on your own. You will cheat. The only way to be safe is to only eat things with a scannable barcode. I highly recommend the following products:
Breakfast 0700(choose one)
-Special K Breakfast shake Cafe Mocha
-Special K Flatbread breakfast sandwich
-20 ounce folders coffee with 4 ounces of flavored creamer
Morning Snack 1000 (choose one)
-Special K chocolate granola bar
-Another coffee
Lunch 1200
-Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers are the best pre-prepared diet meals I have ever had. Big chunks of meat and vegetables and a wide variety of options https://www.healthychoice.com/cafe-steamers
Afternoon Snack 1400 or on the ride home to avoid stopping for fast food
-Granola bar, shake, coffee or even treat yourself to a snack pack of chips
Dinner 1600
-Another Healthy Choice cafe steamer
Desert Before Bed
-You've done the work, so find a low calorie fudgcicle, cookie or cake option.
-
Log in every single meal, every day. Don't cheat or do funny math.
-
Ask friends and family for support. They will be the worst food guilters and can literally "weigh" you down.
-
Weigh yourself every morning at the same time with your scale in the same location while naked. I recommend the RENPHO bluetooth scale which is $30 and comes with an app that will connect to your phone, tracks your progress and gives you biometric data https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01N1UX8RW/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=ricoh+scale&qid=1593699999&sr=8-3
-
At some point, you will hit a three day plateau. You just need to eat some yogurts and oatmeal (make sure to log it in MyFitnessPal) to get your guts to move the waste out. You'll have three frustrating days and then suddenly you will drop a full pound in a day.

Aim for a minimum of 1 gram of protein per pound of goal bodyweight, OR 1 gram per pound of current lean muscle mass (which you can determine on the basis of your current bodyfat percentage; I keep track of mine using this scale https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01N1UX8RW).

Hey there, I don't know for sure if this could help, but for me as a data-minded person, it helped me. On Amazon, I purchased a Renpho bluetooth scale and measuring tape. It works in conjunction with an app that will easily keep track of your weight/bmi/fat/etc and measurements. The scale is like any other scale that checks fat percentage and will keep the results in the app. Also, you can use their digital measuring tape and it will keep track in the app as well. You literally measure and hit save. It's not the most accurate, but for just keeping track of a moderately correct measurement, it has helped me. It keeps metrics and will show you a chart of your progress. It also has your goals and shows a total of weight loss on the home screen which is a nice reminder. I find that unless you are visiting a specialist once a week to do some special form of measurements, this is the best I can do from home. I try to measure in the same area, at the same time, once a week (Sunday morning before breakfast). It may not be exactly what you want, but it's one small suggestion to help with data tracking.

I have a few autoimmune diseases (caused by genetics not ed) and my lymph system is crap because of it :/ also the scale I have shows body water content or % and i think the average is like 40-60 and im always above 60!
heres the scale if u wanna know https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1UX8RW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
it also tracks muscle vs fat so maybe you can see that you gained muscle instead!
