I believe this cage unfortunately is too small. On Amazon there is a cage called “Prevue Pet Products 528 Universal Small Animal Home, Dark Gray” https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Pet-Products-528-Universal/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=prevue+528&qid=1591812847&sprefix=prevue&sr=8-3 This cage is 608 sq in I believe and has a big enough tray to fit the proper amount of bedding into, if you fill it all the way. If it’s too pricey for you, I suggest doing a bit of research on bin cages, as they are cheap and easy, as long as they are of suitable size. Reminder that hamsters need at least 450 sq in of continuous floor space. Hope this helps!

I bought this one for my Robo and she seems to really like it. She doesn’t chew her bars anymore like she did with her temporary cage and she has lots of room to burrow : Prevue Pet Products 528 Universal Small Animal Home, Dark Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RH3xFb0ZH16GD. Only thing is this ones $95. When I bought it it was $80 but I couldn’t find it under the “Purchase Again” tab

I feel like such a bad hamster mom...
So I bought my sweet little hamster Charlie about a week ago. I knew from the start the poor guys cage was too small...although it’s not disgustingly small like the tiny tale crap they sell. My cage now is 24Wx14L. I feel so guilty. Everyone around me was like “that’s a perfectly fine cage” and “how much bigger can a hamster possibly need?” I want more then anything in the world to have my hamster happy and healthy. I keep sizing up the wheels. I try my best not to hold him and leave him alone...although it’s kinda hard to navigate when I have to get him out to clean the cage. I bought him a play pen to use instead of the ball I got him...it’s huge. But he hates it. I bought him toys he doesn’t play with. And I finally felt so guilty that I ordered https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Pet-Products-528-Universal/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=prevue+hamster+cage&qid=1595125205&sr=8-3 I pray it’s big enough for my little Syrian to explore and play. Unfortunately I have to wait two weeks for it to get here. Hopefully he will be okay till then. I feel like no matter what I do he is never pleased nor is he happy. I’m trying really hard guys. I wanna know I’m doing alright...boy if I act like this towards a hamster I can’t imagine having children.

My ham has this one. It fits a 12 in wheel and is nice and deep for burrowing:

I actually had the exact same setup as you, favola cage with the silent runner wheel in the middle. I upgraded to this cage: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074FH47MQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, it's a little pricier but much bigger, also it has HUGE openings so it's much easier to reach in and pick your hamster up or drop them off :)

We got this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_xWfhFb9APVSTY
608 square inches. My Chewbacca got stuck in her tubes just once and I got scared, so I went tubeless. Instead, I put climbing structures like ladders and hidey houses and wooden platforms in her cage instead. Her personality completely changed. She seemed way more relaxed. You could sell your setup to pay for half what this cage costs. I know it's a pain to upgrade, but Syrians should have larger cages just cuz they're so chonky.

The Prevue 528 is a fantastic cage!

Congrats on the upgrade! Super happy for you and your hamster. 😊
I think on that one the wire spacing may be a bit too large. I would suggest The Prevue, or going to Petco to get a 40 gallon breeder aquarium or larger. They're on sale right now. Edit: that cage I linked on Amazon is also on sale right now. It's usually $120-$130 when I check right now it's only $90

most likely not 😔 the only commercially sold hamster cage that I've seen that meets the 450+ sq inch minimum is the Prevue 528
4 points • erinanka
I'd suggest getting a bigger cage. The Prevue 528 is nice. Or if you have more space, you could try getting an IKEA Detolf.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. She’s in a Prevue 528 small animal habitat
Again, I’m new to adding links, so hope that works. It’s pretty large for a Syrian. I think she’s happy. Could you possibly recommend a product on either Chewy or Amazon that would be appropriate? It would be so appreciated!!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_HyXLEb0SCDQGQ This is the cage I switched to, it’s not much more expensive than the one you have already, and I use that one to hold my hamster when I clean his cage, or as a change of scenery for him to be in when we sit on the porch. This cage isn’t great for dwarfs because of the large gap between bars but I don’t know what type of hamster you have.

If you are in the US, this one is great for mice. It’s big and the bars are close enough together they can’t get out. https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Pet-Products-528-Universal/dp/B074FH47MQ

Spend some time stalking craigslist/marketplace/etc. to see if you can get a good used cage.
The Prevue 528 cage ($73) is about 6 cubic feet so it's more than big enough for 2 to 4 rats for weekend trips.

I ordered a new cage from amazon. It should be arriving tomorrow, I hope. I actually bought it because someone here recommended it. I’ll have to buy some hammocks, hiding spaces, toys and a wheel. Hopefully chewy has all of that. I included a link of the cage below.

Looks like it's probably a Prevue 528.
They're a decent size - I actually have my Syrian in one now. However, it's also possible to get larger enclosures for less money, so I've stopped recommending them as much as I used to.

Prevue Pet Products 528 Universal Small Animal Home, Dark Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AvtiEbGH8C0EB I got it from Amazon! The price fluctuates from time to time so i'd keep an eye on it for at least a couple days, I got it for around $65, it's got enough space for a 12" wheel and plenty of other toys and boredom breakers

We bought this one, but got it directly from the manufacturer that sells it, Prevue Pet Products.

If your hamster has gotten out 7 times, that is not ok. It could lead to him/her getting lost and you might never see them again, or they could get hurt somewhere in your house. Since your hamster has gotten out 7 times, have you tried a different cage? Hamsters escaping is a very serious deal so I want to help you.
This is the cage that I have been using for a couple of years and my hamster has never escaped before. Sure it is a little pricy but it’s worth it for your hamsters safety

There are cages you can order on amazon too, this is a good one that is over 500 square inches.
1 points • ashleyasinwilliams
Minimum enclosure size for a hamster is 450 square inches, but bigger is much better if possible. Options include:
-The Prevue 528 is a wonderful hamster cage available on Amazon, but IMO it's very pricey.
-Glass aquariums with screen lids will work, but you need at least a 40 gallon tank or larger. These can be a bit pricey when new, but you can often check your local buy/sell/trade websites to find cheap used ones!
-DIY bin cages are by far the cheapest option, and really great. Plenty of tutorials online on how to make them.

This is the cage I've used in the past: https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Pet-Products-528-Universal/dp/B074FH47MQ
I usually had someone to carry the other handle because it is long enough that it's a little awkward to carry, but I never found it too heavy

Oh thanks! I was about to ask the question on cages, which of these two do you recomend:
https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Pet-Products-528-Universal/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1NPZZY3X6O7E6&dchild=1&keywords=hamster+cage&qid=1585889112&sprefix=hams%2Caps%2C155&sr=8-3
https://www.amazon.com/Ferplast-CAGE-FAVOLA-BLACK-Hamster/dp/B0133LNVAS/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1NPZZY3X6O7E6&dchild=1&keywords=hamster+cage&qid=1585889112&sprefix=hams%2Caps%2C155&sr=8-4
But I think you just answered my question! I was thinking the other one due to the tubes they can add on, but if they like more floor space that works. Where do you find information on the best diet for them as well?

You might be dreaming a bit with the lightweight part. The Ikea Detolf laid on its side with the shelves taken out. You'll need to make a top for it. Also this cage is good. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FH47MQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_asin_title

I worry about the spacing between each bar. A hamster can easily squeeze themselves out if they aren't close enough.

I would recommend the Prevue 528:

mine is currently in a 20 gallon tank, which is WAY too small. I have a larger enclosure on the way. Someone else on this sub suggested it.

Great! So since you’re in the USA you have a ton of options. There’s something called a bin cage you have to DIY with or without power tools. here is the link to an appropriately sized bin at target and here is an informative video on how to make them with or without power tools. There are other, more expensive options such as a Prevue 528 wire cage or a 40 gallon terrarium . If price is an issue I’d suggest the bin cage, or taking advantage of petco’s current $1 per gallon fish tank sale. You will need to buy a lid separately which will add to the cost, unlike the terrarium that already has a lid. Here is an appropriately sized fish tank and here is a good example for a lid- I couldn’t find one on petco’s website, but I’m sure they’d have one in store if you don’t want to make a few trips.
Hopefully these helped! Anything bigger than 620 square inches will be good for your guy. To calculate this just measure the length and width of your cage in inches and multiply them together.

Hi! So mostly echoing the advice above:
- Never introduce your hamster to your cats. Natural prey/predator, it will be very very stressful on both ends.
- Most curiosity and least fearful hamster is the right one to look for! Male hamsters should be easy to tell apart from female hamsters because the males have huge/visible testicles. Maybe you could take your daughter with you when you pick out the hamster, so she can pick the one she wants? You could get the cage and everything ready at home so it'd still be a surprise :) I think if I were your daughter, I might want to pick the hamster myself.
- Here is the guide I used to buy everything for my hamster. Syrians need a cage floor of at least 600 ft\^2, which is a LOT larger than anything in the pet store. I would get a bin cage (cheapest), a 40gal aquarium, or a large enough wire cage (I use this one, and my hamster seems to like it so far). How to keep the hamster happy: they need enrichment! Hamsters are burrowing animals, which is why you'll need a large (not tall) cage with at least 6 inches of bedding on the bottom, so they can spend time building tunnels. They'll also need wooden toys/structures to chew on, both to keep them busy and to wear down their teeth, which are constantly growing (I'd check out chewy.com). Wooden tunnels are great, too, because they let the hamster hide, play, and chew. Aside from that, it'll need a hide (little wooden house) for its nest, a water bottle and/or dish, a food dish, a wheel (at least 11 to 12 inches), a sand bath (I just filled a Tupperware with children's play sand, NOT DUST as this will kill your hamster), nesting material (commonly aspen wood shavings, NOT PINE as hamsters are allergic), and food, lab blocks, and treats (I feed her unsalted almond slivers, unsalted sunflower seeds, carrots, eggs, and meal worms), with 2 tbsp of food, 2 lab blocks, and some treats every two days.
- Hamsters have very sensitive hearing, so it's recommended you don't keep them anywhere near a TV. Moving its cage at night might also be stressful. If you get a silent wheel like the Wodent Wheel, it should be fine at night - my hamster lives in my room with me, and she doesn't disturb me at night!
- I'm not sure if there's a way to keep a hamster from pooping outside of its cage if you let it free roam, but I know you can train them to go in a sand bath.
This YouTube channel is really helpful for hamster startup, as well as hand taming and potty training.
Hope this helps, please ask if you have any more questions! And good luck with the hamster, I'm sure your daughter will be thrilled :)
