I get why people do this in a pinch eg when traveling etc., but you can buy a portable display which connects with a single usb c cable for under $200. https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Monitor-Computer-Speakers-Protector/dp/B07V1SQ966/.

Why use your $1000 iPad for this and lose all the functionality of it just to use as a monitor?

I have this monitor and can confirm that the switch can be plugged into it via a usb-c to usb-c cable. May not be the case with all similar monitors. I just plug in the monitor using the official switch adapter and then plug the switch into the monitor, no dock necessary.

Many would be concerned about bricking which is fair (because of the many reports of third party docks, especially the Nyko one, bricking switches.) It hasn’t done anything unsavory to my Switch though. If you are worried about it the dock can still be used if you prefer.

Something like this might be what you're looking for? If you search Amazon for "Portable Monitor" there's a bunch like this with varying features. I believe some have batteries, but most use USB power and could probably run off a power bank, or a USB charger in the car. The only name-brand one I see is Asus but it doesn't have HDMI, it uses USB-C for display input, which I don't think works on the Switch.

I know this doesn't solve your tower problem, but I use my laptop screen and 2 of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V1SQ966/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_btf_t1_6BvNFbRG71P61?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 (and of course a 60%) to "work from home wherever" and they work like a charm.

I've got three NUCs in my rack, and I keep one of these in my backpack. But it's great for setting in the rack as well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V1SQ966/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4FsEFbC87Y0XM

I use this monitor. It has type-c and micro HDMI inputs that I adapt to. Also would with laptops for a portable second monitor.

Ah gotcha, ok I mean I cheap 4k would work for just productivity with no gaming or color critical stuff and would give you a bigger are provided you can read it. Remember your SB3 is probably at like 150% zoom because of the high res on a small screen so you are essentially not getting all the "real estate" possible because everything would be really small.

IMHO I recommend something like this for you. It's portable and thin so you can toss it in your bag with the SB3, it's powered by the USB C, and obviously video goes through the USB C also. So you'd have an option for a second monitor anywhere you set up (library, study group, diner, class, ECT) not just at home. And you wouldn't need to increase the resolution much if at all so you're still getting the same usable area. Just an idea for ya!

Idk about recommend but i use this Lepow 15.6 inch portable and so far it has done the job at a reasonable cost. Bonus points if you just buy through your employer as a work related expense.

I'm using a Lepow branded monitor. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V1SQ966/ My only complaint is that the HDMI slot is a bit fragile and the cable doesn't sit well in mine after a minor bump. Still works, but I'd like to try to use the USB-C instead.

I dont like gimmick laptops like the zenbook pro duo if you need a second screen get a portable monitor like this one monitor . as for the xps 17 we will have to wait for reviews but i am afraid its going to get smoked by AMD's new processors and wont be worth the $1500+ price tag

I have a RTX 2060 card (part of a pre-built) that is full up on ports:

HDMI 1) projector

Displayport 2&3) 2 monitors at desk

Displayport 4) HTC Vive

I've been wanting to add a "second monitor" for my projector setup (I swap between projector and desk) for a while, and I thought I could achieve this with a USB monitor. Second monitor would be just for web browsing / occasional netflix and whatnot so high performance/fps/etc. was not required.

I bought this thing and have been unsuccessful in getting my Desktop PC to recognize it, and I'm getting the feeling it's because it just can't work the way I thought it could.

The following do not work (also used my work laptop for testing purposes - type of cable in italics):

 • Monitor <- USB Type C to USB Type A -> Desktop
 • Monitor <- USB Type C to USB Type A -> Laptop
 • Monitor <- USB Type C to USB Type C -> Desktop (I think the USB Type C port on my desktop is part of the integrated graphics and is turned off, so this makes sense probably?)

The following does work

 • Monitor <- USB Type C to USB Type C -> Laptop
 • Monitor <- Mini HDMI to HDMI -> Desktop (not a workable solution for my situation though)

So, just wondering whether it is possible to work the way I wanted it to. I'm guessing I'll be returning this thing though.

I understand that I can get a second graphics card, or a displayport splitter, or that sort of thing, but I was attempting for a quick/easy and relatively cheap solution, and the android tablet I currently use as a "second monitor" has been driving me nuts.

Not an expert by any means, but I suspect it has more to do with marketability than ability to make 1080p monitor smaller than 21.5 inches. For instance, my work laptop has a resolution of 1920x1080 and it is either 15.6" or 17", can't remember. Either way - still smaller than 21.5" but still a 1080p display.

Additionally, Windows scales display elements based on the resolution of the display - so your icons will be really small on, say, a 17" 1080p display vs a 25" display. Most people would consider the size of the icons on the 25" display "normal" but you'd have to scale up the size of icons on the 17" display to get icons/text to a normal size. For instance, on my laptop, I run the scaling at 150% - everything appears 150% bigger than it normally would be.

I think most people just do not care for a 1080p monitor smaller than 21.5". However, they can be found with a little digging - this portable monitor is 15.6" and is 1080p.

I went cheap with it to see if I liked the setup. Got this this one used for about $80. I haven't had any problems with it at all, but I am looking to upgrade. I want one that I can mount to my laptop instead of having to sit it on a desk or table (I often work from bed at night, so nowhere to put it). The AOC is just too thick for most mounts I've found. This is the one I'm thinking about upgrading to.

If you want a monitor to bring around with you, also look into getting something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Monitor-Computer-Speakers-Protector/dp/B07V1SQ966/ref=sr_1_3?crid=12FU5ZDXKR2K0&dchild=1&keywords=lepow+portable+monitor&qid=1588620265&sprefix=lepow%2Caps%2C215&sr=8-3

It's good for if you want to bring it along with your mba.

You didn't mention what resolution you want to be at, but if it's 1080p and if you don't care about high refresh rate, the Lepow is pretty decent. I've been using it for about 6 months now and haven't had any problems. And it's well under your budget.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V1SQ966/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DFqBFbVABGS40

I've heard good things about G-Story if you are looking for 1080p with higher refresh rate.

Sounds good, the only downside you’re going to be seeing with this new build is that’s there’s a lot less USB’s on it, so I recommend getting a usb hub for your build. And lastly if you want a portable monitor you should go with this one from Lepow. Anyways Have fun
