It depends.
The ProMedia set I mentioned is integrated. That is, the amplifier is built into the subwoofer and the speakers plug into it. The subwoofer has it's own on/off switch and so do the speakers. You can turn off the subwoofer and keep the speakers on.

When you start to spend a bit more money (or just differently even) you can get an amp/receiver and passive speakers- you're doing this right now. You can just buy a subwoofer like this: Polk Powered Subwoofer.

The amp you want to purchase does not have a sub (subwoofer) out. But what you can do (if you want a sub) is to get the Polk sub above (or something similar). Output from your amp goes to the input of the sub. You would attach your speakers to the speaker outputs on the sub. It would be "cleaner" (e.g. easier) if you had an amp or stereo receiver with a sub out. This way you would have only one output going directly to the sub (amp/rec sub out to sub subwoofer in).

You certainly don't have to spend a lot to get nice sound. Spending more money will get you better components, more powerful with cleaner power (e.g. differing classes of amps) with less distortion. Also, there are people here who have way more experience with hi-fi stuff than I do; so they can probably offer really specific advice for you.
But remember, as long as your stuff fits into your budget and you're happy with the sound that's all that ultimately matters.

A couple of "budget' powered sub options that I own and would recommend for these are:

Hi again,
I placed an order for Jamo S 803. And currently talking to someone in my city, who have Denon S750H brand new for sale at good price, might crack a deal.
About subwoofer, which one would you buy? Deyton that you recommended earlier for or this:

Thanks a lot.

Yeah, the Fluance sub plays down to about 35 Hz whereas the Logitech seemed to cut out after around 45 to 50. I never turned the z623 loud enough to encounter that problem, I have been living in apartments since I got it and trying to avoid noise complaints haha.
I'm probably not the best person to ask about other audio components since I am pretty new to higher-end component audio. I'm sure the ESI units are fine, but it looks like the subwoofer is only rated to play down to 50Hz from what I saw, so it probably won't go much lower than the z623. I think I have seen this Polk unit recommended quite a bit in my research.
EDIT: I was looking at the wrong part of the specs, the ESI sub is rated to go to 30 Hz. It looks like it will be fine to me!

So I've been searching for another sub with a low pass filter but can't seem to find any..
Here's an example, could I use this Polk Audio sub?
1 points • mag914
What would you recommend in that case? And I am considering a 2.1 system, maybe this Polk PSW10 idk or maybe the better PSW505 but regardless that will come later.
I wish I didn’t love audio and video and live in an apartment.

Will I lose the . 1 sub soundtrack if I do this. What gets plugged into my receiver labeled subwoofer out? Here is the speaker I was thinking about getting? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_GkzRFbTE1XC2Z?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

That's in line with what I am after, for sure.
Is it better than this thing? Some of the reviews on this one worried me.

Hey guys, quick question about subwoofers. My stereo receiver doesn’t have an RCA output for a sub so I’m planning on just running the sub through the B channel since I don’t need a full 5.1 setup, just two front facing speakers and a sub is good for me. I know I need a powered sub that’s able to be used with speaker wire. My question is, is any sub that had that capability on the back a good fit for what I’m trying to do, or does it CLEARLY need to state that it’s a high level input on the sub. For example, does this sub have high level inputs? Thanks!!

I have a small room. I want to get a subwoofer for my home setup because the bass from my soundbar is very lackluster. I currently have a soundbar connected to my tv through an optical cable. The tv itself might also have audio out (RCA?)
What all would I need to connect something like this to what I have?
Also would there be anyway to have my gen 2 amazon echo connect to it?

I'm no audiophile, but I have one of these that I bought many years ago.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KVQBA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's relatively cheap and it works. But, if you want the kind of bass that makes your neighbors call the cops, this unit isn't going to cut it.

This is my budget setup that I am happy with (although those Edifiers look pretty sweet):
- Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers = $70
- Polk Audio PSW10 10" Powered Subwoofer = $130 (There is a lot of hate for this sub, but it sounds pretty good next to my desk in my 10x12 office.)
- Craigs List / FB Marketplace Denon (or similar) receiver = $100 or less

Something like this which has a lowpass crossover filter. Will allow you to only use sub-bass here and use the 3.5s for the rest of the frequency range. I am not sure exactly if you plug the RCA in then how do you output it to other speakers without the piggyback RCA. That should work but its not that professional sounding? loss of signal? anyways who are we to complain we're not even using balanced TRS or XLR

Help with purchasing speakers and subwoofer for 2.1 computer setup.
So ive had the Logitech Logitech Z623 since 2014 and have grown tired of there sound. Im looking at buying these speakers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2/?coliid=I3IZ6VKSMCSL1Z&colid=3604JX7IF00OY&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it and this subwoofer https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-PSW10-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=subwoofer&qid=1595197523&s=electronics&sr=1-2 and connecting them to this yamaha reciever which I got in a 5.1 home theatre system back in 2014 https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/328301/HTR-3065_Manual.pdf . I have two questions. Are these speakers a good combo with my reciever? And can I use a rca to subwoofer cable and connect the sub to the subwoofer connection on the reciever? I know this reciever is lacking some ports in regards to subs so im confused if this will work or not. Any help is greatly appreciated! Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit for this question.

Not a huge audiophile so I don’t need the best but I do want surround sound (for awareness gaming) and dual subwoofer.
Currently looking at a pair of bookshelf speakers: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-0DoEb4DV9VAR
And this sub: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_M2DoEbNJ6VR4T
I really wasn’t trying to spend more than $400 but I’m seeing that I may need to spend that much just on a receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers and work my way up to the rest.

Thoughts on pairing the R1280Ts with a Polk sub? Since they're both active, I figure I don't need an amp, just a simple 2.0 DAC.
1 points • sharkamino
You're welcome. What ever you do don't get the Polk PSW10, it's not good. If you buy a new subwoofer Dayton Audio SUB-1200 is larger and better or Dayton Audio SUB-1500 for your large room if you are also using it with a TV. Or keep on the lookout for a better used SVS or HSU.

I was thinking of the Polk Audio PSW10: https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-PSW10-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA/
as for the amp.. i was thinking of this one, but wasn't sure if it's the best for my needs of if there was something better?

$300? If you need to piss people off you want heavy duty bass, and no sound bar alone or with a kit sub is going to be up for that task. Here is my recommendation for generating the serious neighbor hate: Yamaha ATS10180-R Soundbar Polk Audio PSW10 10" Subs (PAIR) RCA Splitter
Splitter off the soundbar sub-out, connect subs with a spare l/r audio cable and you are in business. Not what I would normally recommend, but this is bang-for-buck going to produce the most annoyance you can get for just over $300. Shouldn't sound too shabby for action films either. Have fun.

That really depends on how much you want to spend. I allways recommend going for passive speakers and a separate amp, i found it to just be better imo.
If you want something around 200$, a pair of Micca MB42X and a AMP like the SMSL SA50 will be good enough for most people, you can add a separte sub down the line, like this Polk PSW10
If you are someone who prioritizes aesthetics, take a look at the Kanto YU4 line up, they are pretty decent and are often on sale.
Vanatoo t0 are probably the best speakers out there with a small form factor and they also output quite a bit of bass which is surprising for such size.
I never messed around with cheaper stuff than that so I cant really recommend anything below that price point but im sure you might be able to find something cheaper. r/BudgetAudiophile is a place you wanna visit if you need help.

I have the Yamaha ATS-170 (Costco version from previous model year). I second the suggestion to just buy a good subwoofer and add it to the soundbar. I ordered the $100 PSW-10 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KVQBA) and have been very happy with it after adjusting its levels to not be too boomy. You can look at https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-budget-subwoofer/ for some other suggestions.

For my office, I'm using Pioneer SP-BS22-LR mains with a Polk PSW10 subwoofer. Current pricing Amazon respectively is $118 & $129. The price of each often drop down to $100. So, if you are patient, you can get a beter deal.
https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG
https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-PSW10-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA
There are other options. If bass is important, you really can't do without a subwoofer with stand mount speakers. If you are considering tower speakers, listings are commonly for individual speakers. Before you order tower speakers ensure that you are purchasing a pair, not a single speaker.

So there are two ways to go at this - a Schiit Fulla (or Hel) can handle both mic and headphones, but that is it - no way to go for speakers.
I will direct you to /r/headphones for headphones, because if you are going GAMING!!11ONE11! headphones, typically the sound is shit. Picking up a cheaper set of headphones and a mod mic will be a lot better.
Say you grab a DT770 Pro (just means it squeezes tighter) 32 Ohm ($137 on Amazon) plus a ModMic Uni ($50 on AntLion Audio - makers of) brings you to $187. Add a Schiit Fulla - $99 and you can certainly power the headphones (80 ohm Dt770s are $140 in gray - see this dive into the weeds on the difference between the various DT models where pants on head people claim the 80 has 'more bass' than the 32, pants on head because they are subjectivists and don't pull a scope out to check). Net $268.
Now speakers, this is going to limit you most likely to bookshelf which lack in bass (typically) to their larger cousins tower/floorstanding. Micca MB42X ($80 Amazon) could be paired with a Dayton DTA-1 amp ($26) bringing you to $392. Idea would be all audio into the (one or two cables from the computer based on USB power allowable) Fulla - headphones and mic through the front two inputs, TRS M/M from back of Fulla to DTA-1. DTA-1 via speaker to the Miccas. If you want more bass, add a Polk PSW10 (or similar) sub ($129), and go DTA-1 into the SPEAKER level inputs, and then SPEAKER level outputs to the Miccas. All told 521 plus shipping and tax.
Upgrades would be for the Miccas - they are very entry level, see sidebar here for where to go. Sub is probably fine, amp could be more, but if you are sitting at a desk 85dB/W @1m speakers fed 15W is still enough to cause hearing loss so you would be getting more quality from the amp than you needing to increase the power (sidebar again). Same with the DAC/Amp - some people HATE Schiit (partially marketing, while they do have internal testing I am willing to bet they are not 6Sigma quality so some bad experiences have made it out). You can go to a Hel for another 90, above that you have to swap brands for mic inputs.

Would this combo make for a good 5.1 system?
Speakers (I would buy 2 sets): https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Amplifier-Turntable/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=micca%2Bmb42&qid=1597602016&sr=8-3&th=1
I'll worry about stuff like speaker wire and shit later. Everything here at full MSRP combined sells for about $660, is this a good deal? Doing some research it sounds like I might be able to pick this up for $560 as some of the items apparently go on sale often. My expertise is in headphones, all of this speaker stuff is new to me. The size room that it would get set up in would probably be considered a smallish medium-sized room

I was so blown away by the epic home theaters some of you were posting that I was embarrassed to show my humble 5.1 surround setup in the family room. It’s such a modest little thing.
However, it gives me great enjoyment, so I’d like to share it with you. It’s built around some old components I’ve had for years (Sony surround receiver, Samsung Blu-ray player, B&W 805 speakers), combined with a few new pieces from Amazon.
Given my small room (10’ x 12’) and smaller budget, compromises had to be made. However, I feel I made the best use of the resources available, and I can’t think of anything I’d change right now.
Since I still have about 300 CDs which I’d like to continue to enjoy, this system also has to produce quality stereo sound, which the Sony receiver capably delivers in 2-channel mode to the phenomenal B&W monitors.
In summary, movies are immersive, music is engaging, and I’m happy. I think I’ve hit the mark.
Here is my equipment list:
TCL 55S425 55” 4K Smart LED Roku TV (2019)
Sony STR-K790 Home Theater Receiver
Samsung BD-F5900 3D Wi-Fi Blu-ray Disc Player
TEAC CD-P650 Home Audio CD Player
B&W Matrix 805 Studio Monitors (Fronts)
Micca MB42X-C Center Channel Speaker (Center)
