First thing - while a budget is good, what you're asking for is a bit of a no-man's land. What I mean by that is, if you actually want so spend around $800 for a gaming headset, your options are a bit limited.
Thankfully, that means that you can very easily get away with spending less!
I'd start here: Philips Fidelio X2HR for $145 and V-Moda BoomPro for $30
This setup should be able to work directly or through cheap adapters with everything you have. No DAC or amp needed strictly for the headphones.
But more importantly, the X2HR pretty much hit that 'gaming' featureset of just enough detail, just enough bass, and oodles of soundstage with great imaging.
The BoomPro as well is an absolute knockout for the price, especially given how well it works with the X2HR.
What's more, the combo is lightweight and extremely comfortable.
The only real downside is that they're open. Crank them to immersional volume levels and people nearby will hear them, and at normal volumes you're going to hear your surroundings.
For that, you can look at Beyerdynamic's MMX 300 for $279, also known for comfort and quality.

I’d recommend the Philips Fidelio X2HR. I use them with my PS4 with a Modmic wireless and FiiO BTR 3 with a Creative bluetooth USB for a fully wireless setup. If your okay with wired though you can just buy a cheap mic and plug it into your headphones and then into the controller. The Philips are comfortable, have great bass, good soundstage and a lot of people use them for gaming. $144 new on amazon or used like new for $101.

Check out these Phillips Fidelio X2/HR (they’re $144 at Amazon right now — I paid more than twice that). Wired. Hi/Res certified. You could have a watermelon for a head and put a PSVR and glasses on top and still feel comfortable, due to the sort of ski-band style strap that it uses. It never feels like it’s pushing against your head or gets too snug; I really like the design of them.
They’re an open pair of headphones (as opposed to closed), so it’s a wider soundstage. Playing a game like “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” is a perfect way to show them off, as the binaural recording techniques they used really makes it feel like you’re hearing voices coming from in and all around your head (as opposed to just the L/R channels on your ears). Also, you don’t need to get a special headphone amp/DAC to power them as the PS4 controller is just the right amount. I absolutely love these headphones, especially as they fit comfortably over my PSVR headset. I think they’re the answer to your problem! And if not, you can always send ‘em back to Amazon.

Hello,
I'm looking for a new pair of headsets for gaming on PC, I have the HyperX Cloud and the top hurts my head, almost dented it a bit. Willing to go up to $250, maybe $300 if the quality gains are worth.
I have these ones on my target but looking for suggestions from experts :)

Can you do open back or do you need closed back??
How about fidelio x2hr??? There is a used like new set on amazon for 93$. They are great for gaming and movies. They have a huge soundstage and great bass for an open back. I have multiple headphones and they are easily one of my favorite. They sound like a movie theatre lol.

these or the X2HR for $116?
1 points • Unimarobj
Hey, thanks for the response! I don't have strong feelings on open/closed just because I haven't spent enough time exploring either, and I have a set of closed headphones (no mic option). If I may ask two follow-up questions...
I only see the X2HR for ~150 on amazon. I might be missing something, but are these the ones you're talking about?
I've never used a plug-in mic before, but am I correct in that you use the mic cable in place of the audio cable that come with the headphones, which adds a mic in-line?
Many thanks again, I really appreciate it! :)

If you're shopping in the US, they're currently $149 through Amazon. That's what I would do.
If you're not in the US, I understand.
Back in the day, $200-$230 was their typical price, and if you could get them under $170 that was a deal. Over the past year they've typically been down under $150 though. The price will probably continue to rise on them again now that they're discontinued and as inventory runs out.

My Audio Technica m40xs just broke and I am looking for a replacement.
Budget - 100-150 USD
Source - Directly into my PC
Requirements for Isolation - Not picky about this, but I will almost always be using them at home.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized
Preferred tonal balance - Balanced
Past headphones - Pretty much only these, the rest have almost always been earbuds.
The only real improvement I am after is having a 3.5mm removable cable so I can plug my vmoda mic into the headset (unless this is not the best way to go). These will be mostly for gaming honestly. I did not find these headphones that comfortable until I replaced the earpads with some faux velvet ones.
EDIT: Are these good? Good deal?

What I've been using is just taking real headphones (spend as much as comfortable I've been using these and they are great)
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2HR-Over-Ear-Open-Air-Headphone/dp/B01N5VHLUG/
And then getting a mic for them
https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Microphone-Gaming-Communication/dp/B00BJ17WKK/
Sounds amazing, super comfy, and the same price as a high end headset. (Do have to plug it into the controller though).
Used to have to get a steel series replaced every few months and got sick of it.

I went all out on parts for my PC a few weeks back, but shortly after assembling it, I realised I don't have a good sound setup for it. I have a great pair of headphones that I've been using to tide me over, but I could really use a recommendation for a good pair of 2.1 speakers.
My budget is $200 for everything (including shipping to Hawaii, two speakers, a sub, and amp if needed). I don't know anything about the sound features on my motherboard or GPU, but if I can take advantage of any of those, that'd be great. A dedicated volume knob and an easier way of switching to headphone/mic inputs would also be nice.

I would suggest you get the Phillips Fidelio X2HR . . Amazon about $120.00 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5VHLUG/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_PJ1eEbAV6M6MJ
Great all around Here is a great review .. FYI the only difference between the X2 and X2HR is now Earpads replaceable and a slightly different finish.

Phillips Fidelio X2HR with Voda Boom Mic plugs right in
Philips will give you a great and fun music listening experience, but also a top notch gaming experience. 99% of gaming headsets simply aren't worth the price and are hoping you'll cave for some "sick gamer gear"

I've paired Phillips X2HR with my Sound Blaster X3. I must say, it's a great paring for people that like fun headphones. Some consider the Phillips X2HRs to be muddy, but in my opinion they offer a lot of bass and a V shaped sound without sounding like a muffled pillow. For SXFI, the Phillips X2HR also work extremely well while something like the Sennheiser 6XX with SXFI hurt my ears...SXFI was unusable with those.
I play Overwatch and Apex Legends, both sound great on this setup. Overwatch is best in an unprocessed form, while the virtual 7.1 and SXFi really completes Apex Legends. The first time I heard Apex Legends with SXFi and 7.1 VSS I was blown away and it made me a better player. In general, sound processing features can be hit or miss depending on games, but the Sound Blaster X3 gives you all the options between SBX, Scout Mode, EQ Profiles, 7.1 VSS, and SXFi.
As for the headphones, paring the Phillips X2HR with one of these microphone cables yields a fantastic and hassle free setup with great microphone quality courtesy of the Sound Blaster X3 and its TRRS headphone jack. (No mic/headphone splitter needed.)
(There is a microphone input on the headphone out jack of the Sound Blaster X3.)
Here is an image of the setup.

Grab a pair of Philips SHP9500 with a V-MODA BoomPro. Will out preform pretty much anything at that price point (~$100). If you have a little extra money, go for a pair of Fidelio X2HR with the V-MODA again if you need a microphone.
1 points • Fai9al023
No problem!
As far as recommendations would go based on those preferences:
SHP9500/X2HR with a BoomPro is a very popular choice around here. That combo will place it well under your budget, and I think most people would enjoy them for gaming.
If you're into more competitive gaming, the 9500 would be better for those details like footsteps you would want to hear.
The X2HRs are bassier and a more "fun" headphone with a very wide soundstage. If you want a more fun headphone but willing to sacrifice some of treble performance (footsteps and such), then the X2HR is a great choice.
Either way, you will not be disappointed!
1 points • rebelution808
everyone recommends these, but it sounds like shp9500's would be good. I wear glasses and don't have an issue with most headphones. If I do, I'll end up stretching the headband slighly until its better.

but the philips shp9500s are very comfortable, just not very bassy and treble is considered harsh by some.
actually, i just remembered the 9600 came out, they look slightly different and are more v-shaped. (aka more bass and treble, more fun sounding, but wont have as much clarity with vocals). theyre similar to the philips x2-hr in terms of sound.

TL;DR the philips 9500, 9600 or x2-hr

I 'd say the genres you listen to are pretty bassy so o good pair of bass cans would be ideal, the Philips X2 are notorious for excellent punchy powerful base without leaving the rest of the frequencies behind, they are pretty good for gaming too and have a good soundstage, you can also buy a VMODA Boom Pro and have a hell of a gaming headset.
I kinda now understand why they did not recommend you the DT990, they are treble focused headphones and your genres won't be as enjoyable with them.
1 points • MarbleFox_
If you have to have wireless (personally, I find wireless headsets to be more inconvenient than wired headphones), then I'd recommend the Arctis 7x or 7p (The 7p is the same thing as the 7x except the 7x is wirelessly compatible with both PS and Xbox and the 7p is only wirelessly compatible with PS)
If you don't have to have wireless, then I'd recommend either the SHP9500 or X2HR (depending on budget) and this mic. If you go with either of those options though, keep in mind those are open back headphones, so if you hear what they're playing, even from across the room, it's not that they have the volume way too loud, that's just the nature of open back headphones.

Phillips Shp9500 and V-moda BoomPro
Will be superior to 95% of gaming headsets. Don't get swindled into paying for "leet Arctis gaming" marketing, if you want sound quality this is the way.
My personal setup consists of Phillips Fidelio X2HR, V-Moda BoomPro, and Astro Mixamp 2013. Tad more expensive than $100 but really good.
