You can use mostly any cable. I recently picked up a 16ft one from Amazon that worked fine.

I'm using this one without any issues. Under half the cost of the official one and still 16ft.

Edit: Scratch that. It was $26.99 when I ordered. I guess they're popular because now its $40.

Quest 1 Link runs at 150 Mbps, you can even use a USB 2.0 cable with minimal impact. It's limited by the video decoding speed, not USB speed. Quest 2 should be able to bump that up a bit but not more than double I don't think.

There are 5m USB 3 cables like this that seem to work fine for most people.

The included cable only support USB 2.0. It will allow you to charge and move data between your Quest and PC. It will also allow you to use Sidequest.

However, if you want to be able to run PCVR games for Rift S or SteamVR, you will need a cable that support USB 3.0.

I've tested a couple of cables and short of the official $80 Quest link cable, I believe this is the best.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087JKBM6W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As long as you have a USB 3.0 A port, then you're good. No need for a USB C port.

16ft is the absolute minimum, trust me. I had the 10ft and it wasn't enough.

I use this to play Half Life: Alyx and works all the time, no issues.

There's a nice list of tested link cables here.

I just purchased this one from Amazon based on the reviews and length: here. It supposedly charges while playing but have not tried personally.

I'd say the Quest 2 is the better deal. I had a Rift S, I sold it to get the Quest 2 and I'm very glad I did. I got a 3rd party Link cable from Amazon, was just a little over $20, works great for me. Here's the one I got, but others would probably work fine too: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087JKBM6W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

From day 1 Oculus treated the Rift S like the red-headed stepson and the Quest as their golden child. Facebook already announced they will be dropping support for the Rift S.

What about cables, with the usb A at the end, that say they can charge your battery ?
Do they mean charge, but not fully ?
( like this one : https://www.amazon.com/Oculus-dethinton-Transfer-Charging-Compatible/dp/B087JKBM6W/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1CJXRGY3MWTE6&dchild=1&keywords=oculus%2Blink%2Bcable&qid=1603119211&sprefix=oculus%2Blink%2Caps%2C259&sr=8-3&th=1 )

Yes, it's crazy, the USB standard in general 🤮. You could look for used official link cables, which is probably the best in terms of quality, realtively thin when compared to others and good length. Some people sell at 30-50, but very hard to find.

Official Oculus 3rd Party Recommendation Anker makes some pretty solid cables, and this was fine, I used it for a tiny bit, will probably want a right angle connector of sorts, the product listing on the support page is now 3 ft instead of 10 ft for whatever reason so not sure why. If the 10 ft doesn't come back, you can just use in conjunction with an active usb extension like the one below.

Monoprice 5m Active USB Extension This would also probably come in handy if you wanted like, mega range to your play space.

One of the cables I used third party was Dethinton a bit on the thick side, so I returned it.

Another option could be going for Virtual Desktop, purchase through Oculus Store for the Quest, NOT THE RIFT, and you can add a patch through SideQuest that lets you wirelessly stream games from Desktop to Quest, pref a 5ghz / Wifi 6 router to have a good experience. I've used it, and honestly I don't notice any lag, people have complained of latency on Expert/Expert+ on Beat Saber, but I don't really play the game, but a new update has came out which has reduced latency and it's probably about 30ms overall from 40 for me I think. Some reports better/same as Link cable. There's tons of threads out on it.

Sorry for the wall of text, a lot of info to take in, and I'm kinda a stickler for stuff like this and knowing what I buy and doing my due diligence so I don't end up regretting or making a wrong purchase.

I personally am using VD (Virtual Desktop) and it's been my go to, it's been great so far when I'm in the same room, and I don't feel any lag and I'm more than happy / fine with how it looks.

I'm using the 64gb oculus quest 2. You don't need the more expensive 128gb one because it's not storing anything on the quest. You need the Oculus link cable which can be a pricy cable but I got a third party one which works 100% exactly like the Oculus one but for less than half the price. My laptop is an Acer Nitro 5 with an RTX 2060, 9th gen i7, and 32gb of ram but I feel like you could go down on the processor and ram.

Here are the things I'm using from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087RSQGSV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_v3hMFbJ7PA60J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08F7PTF53/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_p5hMFb3KJ2T1Z?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087JKBM6W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_b4hMFbKF72JZW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Of course you need the VR version of the game which, if you got it on steam, then I believe you have it.

That is literally it. I don't even use a flight stick. I've played on Xbox for so long that I just use a Bluetooth xbox controller and the default context key mapping which makes it work exactly the same way.

I prefer using my Quest now with my PC instead of my Rift S.

Got some things to make the Quest better:

  • Cable: https://www.amazon.com/dethinton-Transfer-Charging-Compatible-Headset/dp/B087JKBM6W/

  • Padding: https://www.amazon.com/MASiKEN-Professional-Replacement-Accessories-Comfortable/dp/B082Y3YCF3/

  • Headphones: https://www.amazon.com/Amavasion-Headphones-Headset-Sound-Noise-Suppressing/dp/B083XF27DK/

These things have made putting on the Quest and playing on the PC convenient and comfortable. Compression is barely noticeable in most games but extreme low light games has some compression blocks in the darks and having a single USB cable to worry about is pretty nice. The Quest does not have any significant tracking difference from the Rift S.

If you're not in a hurry I would wait until September for Oculus Connect 7 when more information about future headsets (and maybe Quest revision?) will happen.
