If you can fit a NH-D15, you probably won't do much better. It's about the best air cooler on the planet, better than quite a few AIOs, and zero chance of leaks.

Make your life easier and sick with an air cooler like the Noctua D-15.

It will give you better temps than this ~~AIO~~ radiator plus a semi cheap "fittings, tubing, a pump + a cpu block" and be much easier to work with - especially for a first time builder.

And if you're not OCing your 3600 then you honestly don't need a different cooler than your stock one. But if you want to go do that route then really look into the Noctua.

I was using the stock fan. I first didn't have any case fans and just had the CPU fan. The CPU literally got to 95 degrees and got auto shut down. I had to keep the case open to play games until I got my fans.

Then I got the fans and it helped with airflow, but on games like CSGO i was getting 68 degrees or more and on battlefield around the high 70s and 80s if i recall correctly.

I haven't tested BF5 yet but I know on CSGO with the watercooler it keeps CPU down to 50 degrees and PC on idle or on reddit now it's around 31 degrees vs the 50\~ mark it was on before.

The MAIN reason was for aesthetics, but the liquid cooling aspect actually helps to keep my CPU cooler. You can get by with the stock cooler, you don't need to get an RGB liquid cooler, you can probably get yourself a really decent fan.

There's nothing wrong with the stock cooler and it will work to your needs. However, I think that in the long term you should probably get a better cooler if you have the money.

By the way, I think for 90USD the Noctua air cooler outperforms liquid coolers, but it doesn't look as great :p

I read online that the MA620M is not a good value CPU cooler. You could consider something like the Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B for half the price, or the Noctua NH-D15 if you want to spend around $100 on an air cooler.

Also if you're OK with Amazon warehouse, there are Z490 boards for cheap on there.

Otherwise, solid build and good luck!

If you want a air cooler I would recommend the Notcua NH-D15. It's not the prettiest of coolers but it does a great job.

A review for that one where the person has an i9-9900k said their cpu idles at 32-37C and runs at 50-65C when gaming.

> Coolermaster MB600l

part of your thermal issues are the case. That case has a hilariously bad design for air intake. I'd love to know your cpu temps if you pop off the side panel.

You could try something like this noctua. The Noctua coolers kick ass.

The i9-9900k has a 95watt tdp (thermal design power). Overclocked, you might find it uses in excess of 125, possibly even 150 watts.

Therefore, your cooler should have a tdp of at the very minimum, 95 watts.

Google your cooler's model name and tdp and you should get the specs of it.

Looking around, this seems to be the most widely recommended cooler for something as powerful as a 9900k: https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-heatpipe-NF-A15-140mm/dp/B00L7UZMAK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?keywords=noctua+nhd15&qid=1555084160&s=gateway&sr=8-3&linkCode=ll1&tag=rlncg40d-20&linkId=33421dc9d67e47cb77ce00085251cfdf&language=en_US

All you need to do is:

  • Learn how to remove and reinstall a video card. It is SUPER easy.
  • If you have an AIO liquid CPU cooler, you don't have to worry about it during travel.
  • If you have a stock CPU cooler, leave it. It isn't heavy enough nor is its mass far away enough from the motherboard for it to be a problem during travel.
  • If you have an aftermarket tower cooler, that is quite heavy and could possibly damage the socket while being tossed around in transport. Learn how to uninstall and install a CPU cooler. It's not that hard.

  1. People tend to vastly overestimate the sort of strain they'll be putting on their processors, and usually choose CPUs at a tier (or several tiers) above what they need, which wastes precious dollars that could be spent on much more meaningful upgrades, like higher-tier GPUs, or vastly more storage.
  2. I meant that you should buy one of the top-end air coolers. Noctua is King, and they make all-black versions also:

If you don't plan on OCing the 9900k that would work but it'd probably be quickly outpaced with any significant ocing.

For a 9900k oc on air i'd go with a NH-D15 or Dark Rock 4 Pro

If you got room for or desire an AIO then a good 280mm or 360mm should be fine. They all use pretty much the same asetek pumps.

I couldn't tell you. :-)

I have an old AMD 5800k with the stock cooler and it sounds like a hair dryer. :P (But it is actually a nice white noise). I bought the case to make use of my old mATX system so I could have separate work and gaming stations. I do use a noctua fan on my gaming i7-4790k. If you unplug the hard drives and go completely SSD, it is whisper quiet.

I have this one, but it only came with one fan at the time. https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-heatpipe-NF-A15-140mm/dp/B00L7UZMAK

Look at this one if you just want to keep that APU and want to be sure it fits. https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-L9a-Premium-Low-profile-Cooler/dp/B075SG1T3X

I am waiting till the 4000 series APUs come out and will upgrade to that for my workstation (compiling, web scripting etc).

If you are concerned about noise-don't buy tool less cases. My Corsair 200R tool less hd racks-they are nice to use, but the hard drives start vibrating and produce this horrible pitch noise. The Q300L doesn't have this ( :D ) because you have to screw in the hard drives.

r/buildapc • comment
1 points • MwSkyterror

That's a pretty big budget for just a decent cooler. If you're just looking for better noise (ie not overclocking much) you can get a $25 budget or $50 midrange cooler that'll serve you fine.

Otherwise, the NH-D15S for $76 is the best option in your budget. Despite having only 1 fan, it's still a top 3 air cooler that rivals 240mm AIOs. For $14 extra you can get the dual fan version (the fan alone costs $22).

There's apparently some pretty good double sink/fan combos out there now. So even an 8700k should be kept reasonable.

Not super great, but I’m very skeptical your selected cooler would overclock any better. Also, in general you probably won’t manually overclock the chip, you’ll make sure pbo and some other setting are enabled and the chip will overclock itself - which, yes is reliant on a good cooler.

Maybe this? be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, BK022, 250W TDP, CPU Cooler https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BY6F8D9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_v-ZaFbQ1QGF3D

The thing about thermal paste is that you shouldn't put very much on usually, something the size of a pea should be enough.

Some people smear it, some people just press it down as a pea size.

If it came with paste on it, you want to get it off and re-apply using new thermal paste.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hNgFNH7zhQ

I always go with the huge Noctua fans, they are so friggin huge so you have to make sure your case can fit it, it doesn't look cool, it has no LED lights; but it cools almost as good as a water cooler and its whisper quiet. And they have never failed me, I've had them running 24/7 for many years without a fan failing.

https://i.imgur.com/oXbFNOi.jpg

The huge surface area carries away heat like its nothing.

They have different versions depending on what CPU you have, and you can move the fans up and down so there is no problems with RAM being in the way.

Yeah, Discord is VERY CPU intensive, so a game that is also heavy on CPU can cause issues. I'd recommend getting a high quality thermal paste, and a better CPU cooler (affordable | premium).

Lemme know later on when you can try low settings as a stopgap until you can get those CPU temps down. I'd also suggest you try unplugging additional monitors to see if that has a positive effect. Not ideal, but in my experience, it CAN help. Additionally, you can try turning off (or on) Discord's hardware acceleration setting in the Appearance Settings.

EDIT: One last thought. You might want to try undervolting or overclocking your CPU and/or GPU to eke a bit more performance out of them. Undervolting is where you tell a device to use less voltage for the same speed, thus achieving cooler temperatures, as their draw power is usually overkill for a given clock speed. The potential risk is in causing instability, which can cause BSODs or graphical glitches. Luckily, undervolting utilities, used properly, will automatically revert settings that don't work. Careful iterative, trial-and-error testing can get you solid results with minimal risks. The opposite of undervolting is overclocking, where you increase clock speed and sometimes even increase voltage, allowing you to get substantially more performance out of a device at the cost of significantly more heat output. I would suggest looking up guides to decide if you want to try either of these approaches, but I would probably wait on overclocking until you get your thermals under control. Applications for CPU tweaking are ThrottleStop and Intel XTU, and for GPU tweaking you can use MSI Afterburner.

If you want a pretty nice cpu cooler I reccomend the scythe mugen 5 or scythe fuma 2 (fuma is better by a little degrees compared to mugen5) . These should perform better than the hyper 212 for a good value. If you want to go all out with cpu cooler for lower temperature I recommend the Noctua D15 which it is the best aircooler as I know of. However with the Noctua, the scythes above perform worse by a couple degrees. So either all out or save a couple bucks here are links

For aftermarket coolers air coolers have come back in a big way and if you're ok with the aesthetics something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L7UZMAK/ is a great option.

If you'd prefer the aesthetics of a CLC the hot option right now is the Arctic Liquid Freezer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WSDLRVP

For RAM as long as it's a reputable brand and 3600C16 it's hard to go wrong. Something like https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16820232880

Get the most powerful processor you can and buy either This or This. Both of them are top tier cpu coolers which are known for their performance and quietness. Even if they are not silent enough for you, There are cases made especially for quietness(Coolermaster silencio series , This define r5 case or there are more) which you can buy. First try the cpu cooler thing.
