> If you pay 30 dollars for a plastic fan you got ripped off.

I would say that for the vast majority of users, paying $30 for a single Noctua NF-A12x25 is quite the ripoff compared to a 5-pack of Arctic F12s for $28.

The type of case and your layout will have a larger impact on cooling performance than choosing between these fans.

But if you're not on a budget the performance and noise difference is appreciable. And for that use case, it's not a ripoff. Context matters.

Put in other terms, the GTX 1650 is better value than an RTX 2080 Ti in terms of cost per frame, but if you want to play in some combination of maxed settings, high frame rates, and/or high resolution, the value doesn't matter anymore. At some point "bang for the buck" loses out to just plain "bang."

> I had $100 air coolers before and it would still occasionally reach temps that weren't ideal. I don't know, just wondered if there is one ugly big air cooler that is considered to be great.

The most expensive air coolers - I know of - are the $90 NH-D15 and the $90 dark rock pro4, which are basically tied for performance. They're HUGE, but certainly not ugly. They can handle heavy overclocking for every consumer CPU on the market, and a reasonable overclock on a threadripper or xeon. AFAIK air coolers don't get more expensive than $90-ish unless you're paying for RGB etc. I'd be curious what your setup was that that wasn't enough. threadripper/extreme CPUs? or, do you live in another country perhaps?

> fans that cost $150

???

The Noctua af 12 25 is - to my knowledge - currently the quietest, highest-performing fan in the world for consumer PCs. It strangely outperforms 140mm fans, and it retails for $30. https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V

A pack of 5 would be $150.

Corsair maglev fans use magnetic no-contact ball bearings, AND they have fully addressable RGB, and they also sell for $30/ea. They're also very quiet.

> liquid cooling is really quiet but still has pump noise either way

yeah that's accurate. or it can be really quiet, with lots of rads and very high-end fans like Maglevs or those noctuas. that's where it gets to be expensive.

Stock paste is reasonable. Stock paste vs the best paste available is good for a couple degrees max. On ryzen 3000 series, complete die coverage is incredibly important since the actual cores are not in the center of the die. “Grain of rice in the center” is not sufficient for ryzen 3000. So when you do get the new cooler, be sure to spread the paste in a thin layer across the entire top of the IHS. Or use a smaller pea sized dot in the middle.

And Yep. Your case/fan setup is choking the system. I bet if you take the side panel off it will drop 5-10 degrees. You have a good plan though. Dark rock pro 4 is a good one. An exhaust only would almost do better than an intake only. But 2 quality fans is quite a bit better. I’ve got 3 normal intake fans and one noctua exhaust fan. Two of these would give you a whole lot of airflow.

The most cost effective air cooler (under 160mm tall for your case) would be a Scythe Mugen 5 or FUMA Rev.B/FUMA 2. Either cooler is capable of keeping a 3600X cool.

The best air cooling solution I can think of currently (and most fiscally irresponsible solution) would be to buy a NH-D14 and replace the stock fans with two NF-A12x25 fans. $130 for the best fans plus what was formerly the best heatsink (before the NH-D15 came out), though I wonder how much benefit it would have over the NH-U12A that comes with the NF-A12x25 fans stock.

Nope, they're actually pretty poor performers and the noise levels is lackluster.
https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V

The noctua is LEAPs and Bounds ahead, I for one wouldn't ever touch these QLs. Hell, as far as I'm concerned these Arctic fans are better performers than the Corsair, and they're $9 bucks each.

Unless you're a hardcore RGB Fanatic, they're simply not worth the money, but I think that's obvious to everyone!

How much Ohms Law do you know? We are looking at this the wrong way - forest in the trees. The specs I saw on the Noctua Fan are 12 volts, .14amps. Do the math on a series resistance circuit. If you're not able to, I'd be happy to post the math. I was very surprised when I looked at it. TLDR - no need for a Buck Converter with a Noctua Fan - https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V/ref=sxin_2_ac_d_pm?ac_md=2-1-QmV0d2VlbiAkMjUgYW5kICQ1MA%3D%3D-ac_d_pm&cv_ct_cx=noctua+fan&keywords=noctua+fan&pd_rd_i=B07C5VG64V&pd_rd_r=36d2081e-ba3e-4fd5-bf77-053d4ec25a93&pd_rd_w=oXvuh&pd_rd_wg=hLktS&pf_rd_p=0e223c60-bcf8-4663-98f3-da892fbd4372&pf_rd_r=627S8HBK2WM7J2R39GBE&psc=1&qid=1582164535

Replace your case fans with high-end Noctua Fans to maximize airflow and reduce fan noise. It won't cut a lot of the noise down, but perhaps a bit. https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V/

If your stock cable management is tight a 25mm can under it.

They have a few choices in that range. Something like this can fit:

Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (120mm, Brown) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C5VG64V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VhWsEbN9N7CX2

I wouldn't take the chance on anything beyond 25mm. It runs the risk of having the center spine interfere with it. Regardless, assuming you don't mind the color scheme, Noctua's Sterrox fans are bar none as good as it gets.

I read that the stock aio fan gets pretty loud. I recently purchased this case (and in anticipation) I bought three of these fans to replace the stock aio cooler fan. I also deshrouded my gpu to replace those stock fans with two of the fans I just bought. Apparently these fans runs much much quieter than stock fans.

i have the sg13 (great case).

>silent wing 3 no pwm fan

you just need a PWM fan. non-PWM means the fan always has to be spinning loudly. PWM means that it only needs to spin fast if necessary. it's essential for managing noise.

for the sg13, you can choose between a 120mm fan or the 140mm fan in the front behind the mesh. you can only fit 140mm if won't obstruct your gfx card (some are longer than others).

for example, this 120mm Noctua PWM fan is probably the most popular sg13 front mesh fan: https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V - It's powerful and extremely quiet. Though you can find much cheaper options.

> If you have a water cooled AIO for the CPU, i found out why i was getting errors on boot with my fan. Turns out the CPU fan needs to hit a threshold of 2000 RPMs for the system to think its good, which these fans dont do.

Hello! Thanks for making this post, it has been super helpful for me trying to make my R8 quieter. There is one thing that I don't understand: The Noctua fan that you mentioned you tried and caused problems has a max RPM of 2000, so why would it be failing to hit the 2000 RPM threshold for the boot test?

This is what the amazon page for the Noctua fan says: "2000rpm maximum speed (1700rpm with supplied Low-Noise Adaptor) "

Were you using the low-noise adapter when you tried this?

The stock fan noise was driving me crazy. I was skeptical going with a 120mm fan, but I wanted less noise. Totally would recommend. My temps stayed about the same, but at way lower RPMs and way way less noise.

I would opt for the Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM, probably the best 120mm fan. I would also consider the Sabrent Rocket 1TB, Samsung are really good but they are overpriced. For must a bit more you can get 1TB.

I wasn't using anything special, though it performed better than the Corsair I tried: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CYX45CK/

The 8700k uses the older non-soldered TIM, so you're going to see higher temps unless you delid. I would recommend getting some Kryonaut and using it however - depending on what the prebuilt used it can make a difference, especially if you're in the 90s for some stress tests.

For instance, I had tried some old school Arctic Silver 5 out of curiosity for a week before I got the D15, and my OC was no longer stable and had over a 5c difference. You might also want to try out a better fan, like the Noctua A12x25: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C5VG64V/

I used Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM fans in my Phantex Evolv X. They aren't black, but I covered them with Phantex Digital Halos and they look gorgeous. The fans are super quiet and super-powerful/effective, and the halos make any fan into a daisy-chainable RGB fan.

Note: Get the "Digital" variant of the halos if you want full digital control of the RGB. The non-digital halos are 12V and digital are 5v. It depends on your motherboard or case, depending on where you're controlling it. The Evolv X case has 5v digital control built-in, so that's what I used since my motherboard doesn't have the headers.

Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM feeling kinda loud

So recently I been having this one problem with my Noctua NF-A12x25 FLX, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (120mm, Brown) like for some reason I turn on the PC, don't touch it for an hour to let everything load before logging in and the fan stopped spinning, I've had this happen to me about 2 times, my recent time I did not realize the fan was not spinning and I was actually using the pc till I felt how hot it was getting, then I replaced it with a Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (120mm, Brown) I'm using the sound reduction cable it came with like with my previous fan and yet it kinda sounds a bit loud like I can hear it and notice it dispite my previous one honestly making less noise then this

any recommendations especially with the problem I was having with my first fan, I have been recommended Noctua NA-FC1, 4-Pin PWM Fan Controller (Black) to control the fan speed, also some other low noise adaptors Noctua NA-SRC7, 4 Pin Low-Noise Adaptor Cables for PC Fans (Black) I might use on this current 4 pin fan to see if it will help lower the sound compared to the one I got in the box.

There are little copper heatsinks you can apply to the memory modules to dissipate heat. You should also look into replacing the weak ass 92mm fan that comes with the kraken g12 with this Noctua NF-A9 PWM fan. I opted out of the heatsinks because this fan does a great job on cooling them down and it's really quiet. I also bought this Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM fan for my gpu's radiator.

I would get one of these https://pcpartpicker.com/product/LmCFf7/arctic-p12-pwm-pst5-pack-563-cfm-120-mm-fans-acfan00137a

They are still quite good for cases and radiators and 5 of those for the price of 1 noctua fan, is just personal opinion but $30 for 1 fan is just a waste of money.

You could also get 140mm fans if you want depending on where you want to put them, since they are bigger they can spin slower and make less noise while keeping up with a 120mm fan in air.

So, speaking as someone who just did this, get a Molex-to-PWM adapter, then pick up a Noctua 120mm fan for the side. There's enough room that you could do push / pull, but that's unnecessary on this.

Trust me on the Noctua bit -I went Thermaltake and I'm regretting it. Part of the next phase of upgrades for Snowtooth is going to be a Noctua fan and a SIL3112 card to have native SATA in 8.6 (as opposed to adapters).

Been there, what's I've done:

- Replaced the top fans with some noctuas instead of the horrible 120v ones

- Replaced the rack fan controller (basically a temp triggered on/off switch) with a Fan Controller (not great but works) + a molex adapter, it's a standard 5.25" slot so I dremeled the existing slot to accommodate the new controller.

Now the fans are temp based and can run all the time while being very quiet

Put some sound dampening panels on both sides and back of the rack.

Overall it's better, but like other post said the openings for ventillations on the front panels is where the noise comes out.

What had the most impact though was having my main server into a 4U full of noctua fans

Radiator/intake fans:

[NF-A12X25] (https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V/ref=sr_1_3?crid=HJIEENUXKHXI&dchild=1&keywords=nf-a12x25&qid=1590614804&s=electronics&sprefix=nf%2Celectronics%2C249&sr=1-3) - they're the absolute best fans you can buy, but obviously not cheap.

[NoiseblockerNB eLoop B12] (https://www.amazon.com/Noiseblocker-NB-eLoop-B12-PS-120mmx25mm-Silent/dp/B008RO65UU) - excellent static pressure fans, but they should only be used in push configuration, they get pretty loud otherwise.

[Nidec Servo Gentle Typhoon PWM] (https://www.coolerguys.com/products/gentle-typhoon-120x25mm-2150-rpm-pwm-3pin-fan-d1225c12b6zpa-64) - My favorite fans in terms of price to performance ratio. They're virtually inaudible at 1000 rpm and you might notice they look almost identical to the NF-A12x25 which is basically a GT with improved blade material and motor design.

Exhaust:

[NF-S12A] (https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-S12A-PWM-Premium-Quiet/dp/B00BEZZBFO) - Hands down the best airflow optimized fan you can buy. I've been using mine for 3 years at full speed (1150rpm) and it's almost inaudible.

I also added a blank I/O shield since there's no motherboard in the case

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=MCP-260-00011-0N&_sacat=0

and a supermicro JBOD controller board so the power button works

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=CSE-PTJBOD-CB1&_sacat=0

you could also just jump a couple of pins on the psu atx cable or use a psu tester which does the same thing to make it power on without a motherboard or controller board.

I used the controller board since to me it was cleaner and it had fan headers for the case fans which I also replaced with 3x noctua nf-a12x25

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C5VG64V/

one other thing I did was to remove the small board with the front audio and USB ports to help clean up the cabling in the case. plus they're useless with nothing to plug them in to anyway

Little Update for those of you who are concerned. This is what im going to do with my setup. Thank you all for the feedback, I appreciate each and every one of you.

For Ram i am not doing the upgrade yet but will eventually do it and it will be to 32 GB. Thank you to those who talked me out of upgrading to 64 GB of RAM. You were right definitely not needed. When i do it it will be the: HyperX Fury 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM (Kit of 2)  Black XMP Desktop Memory HX432C16FB3K2/32 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WJJJ5M6/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

After reading many reviews that Alienware and Samsung EVO dont get along i decided to go with Crucial which has 100% compatibility. > Any reason to go with the 3700X over the 3600/3600X?

I think the R5 3600/3600X is a fine choice. I would get the Ryzen 5 3600, if you want to save money on that line item.

The 3700X has a little more frequency and 2 more cores. The idea was to make sure there were not stutters in the VR in some future more-demanding game. The 32 GB of memory, rather then 16 GB, is also about editing or future games. Current games are happy with 16 GB, so you could save $50 there.

I also think that the Wraith Prism RGB (by Cooler Master) is as good as a $40+ aftermarket cooler. The Prism is not as quiet as Noctua solutions, but they are $55+.

> Likewise, any reason to go with the 2060 over the 2070 super?

That is the 2060 Souper, I would not recommend the non-Souper. The 2060 Souper is almost a 2070 non-Souper.

The reason to choose the 2060 Souper over the 2070 Souper is that the performance is going up slower then the price. As you look at moving up to the higher-end cards, you will see 25% price jumps to get 13% more performance.

While you have a large budget, it is not unlimited. Given that graphics cards are the most-replaced component, I try to invest just over what a person needs. Gamers with mad money usually buy a graphics card every few years. The case and power supply can be around for 5-10 years.

> Also, how quiet are those Corsair fans? I was looking to make sure this has low sound during typical use and am fine with moderate sound come gaming or other intense tasks.

I have not found the Corsair fans to be quiet at normal speed. They have to be turned way down to be close to quiet. They do have nice lights.

The Noctua fans I would normally recommend are out of stock in PCPP; NF-A12x25 PWM, NF-F12 industrial PPC, or NF-A12x15 PWM

It looks like PCPartPicker is not showing Amazon stock (you will want 2): https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A12x25-PWM-Premium-Quality-Quiet/dp/B07C5VG64V

Edit:

New list with better fans, a 3600, quiet cooler
