No it’s not a pro controller. This is a pro controller made by Nintendo. I’m not saying your experience is invalid. I’m trying to show you that you’re blaming Nintendo for products they literally do not make. In your initial statement, you said they make shoddy grade controllers. That’s just not true. It’s obvious that you have some sort of vendetta against Nintendo, to the point where you blame them for something that isn’t even made by them. I’m definitely not a fan boy, I totally agree with your opinion on the wifi chip. But you are over exaggerating about the controllers. Yes some joy cons will develop drift, but it’s uncommon.

Well, Nintendo has a bunch it officially licensed controllers, like all the Power A ones with Mario or Zelda themes, those all still have Nintendo logos. But those aren’t really pro controllers.
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Pro-Controller/dp/B01NAWKYZ0 that’s the only actual pro controller you can buy. Anything else is a licensed third party controller, or a knock off.
It’s also possible to have one that looks like that, but it’s actually a cheap knock off. Is your pro controller wireless? And does your pro controller turn on the Switch when you press the home button?

> It must have Amiibo support.
Only available on Nintendo devices, as they wont license third party controllers with it. There are knockoffs that "offer" it, but whether it will actually work or not is a risk because theyre all made of chinesium. As youve found out with that Gulikit device.
Just get a official pro controller, theyre on sale right now for $59

The official Pro Controller is the only one that has rumble like the Joy-Con. You won’t find the same experience in third-Party controllers

Everything you need to connect it to the TV already comes with the system. However, you might want to invest on a Nintendo-licensed Pro Controller like this one! It'll make a huge difference for him.

This is the only actual Nintendo Pro Controller https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Pro-Controller/dp/B01NAWKYZ0/
Anything else isn’t really a pro controller, it’s just a licensed controller that looks like the shape of a pro controller.

amazon is selling a pro controller for $54 and i was wondering if this is the cheapest it will go and should i buy this

If you can see yourself getting more than a few games, then yes probably get a microsd card. Even the 256gb ones are cheap -- but be sure to get one that has "A2" printed on the front. The A2 specification means the games stored on the card will load a little bit faster.
Get a matte screen protector so the dock doesn't scratch the screen, and so you don't have to deal with glare if you're playing in portable mode.
You might also want to get one or two pro controllers at some point. But they're $60 each and you might be fine just using the joycons.
Also you should consider paying the $20 for a year of Nintendo Switch Online. It'll let you play a few games online against other players - including Mario Kart. Also you get free access to a bunch of NES and SNES games which is nice for how little it all costs.

Aye. It's this one: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Pro-Controller/dp/B01NAWKYZ0?th=1

You're completely ignoring my previous post. The Pro is still typically $70. It goes on sale for $50-60 from time to time. The DS4 and Xbone controller are constantly on a $15 "sale".
You've been able to get a DS4 for $45 since late 2017 while the Pro controller has rarely gone on sale at all.

Here's my post on optional things you don't need to know, but probably should at least be familiar with and may enhance your experience.
Let's start with controllers, since just using the two joycons that came with the switch probably won't be enough.
Second set of joycons
So your first option here is to just buy another set of joycons. This means that, with both joycons working together (left side and right side making up one controller), you'll have two separate, full controllers to play with that will work with any game. This will be far, far more comfortable than using two joycons separately instead of two sets of joycons.
You can buy a second set of joycons like this from nearly any electronics/video game store. Note that you'll want to make sure you're getting both the left and right joycons together, not just one or the other. Also you'll probably want to stick with Nintendo brand, not off-brand ones.
The big benefits to buying a second set of joycons instead of a second separate controller are:
-
You're already familiar with how joycons work
-
If you separate all the joycons into mini-controllers, you now can potentially have four people playing at once. This is great for party games, which you may end up using a lot (like mario party)
-
If any of your joy cons die (and they will... eventually. More on that later) then you'll have an easy replacement.
The downside is that frankly, they're not quite as comfortable or easy to use as some of the other options.
Pro controller
The main other option is the pro controller. It's built much more like a traditional controller. The benefits to buying this instead of a second set of joycon are:
-
It's far, far more comfortable than a second set of joycons
-
It's much easier to use. The buttons and thumbstick work a little better
-
It's less likely to need repairs
If you're going to get a second controller, I highly recommend getting the pro controller instead of a second set of joycons.
There are some other options instead of just the Nintendo brand pro controller, but it's really the best there is and it's worth the money, unless you have specific needs/desires.
Both the joycons and the pro controller are wireless and run on internal batteries-- you have to charge them. The joycons charge when attached to a docked switch, the pro controller charges with a USB-C cable.
Okay, that's it for controllers!
Digital Games
Now, as for digital games (rather than physical ones). If your switch is connected to the internet (let me know if you need help with this) then you can actually buy digital games directly from your switch. These download right to your switch, just like an app does on your phone. They're exactly the same as the physical games, except... there's no cartridge. They're stored on your switch (or an SD card). You can access the store to buy these games through the eShop, which is an app on your switch (just like the appstore or google play store on your phone). You find the game you want, you enter your credit card information (there's a few extra steps in there, but they're easy to figure out) and you download the game.
However
Since they're stored on your switch, they take up memory/space (just like apps on your phone... there are a lot of similarities). Your switch comes with 32GB, and the games all vary in size. As an example, Mario Kart 8 is ~7GB, so you'd be able to fit 4 Mario Kart-sized games on your switch, before having to delete something.
Now, you're not strictly limited to that 32GB file size... which brings me to my next point:
MicroSD cards.
These are little memory cards that go in your switch and increase the storage capacity. Simply put, buying a microsd card and putting it in your switch means you can store more games on it at once. The type of card you need is complicated, so suffice to say if you're going to buy one, just buy one that says "for nintendo switch" on it. That'll make it easier.
Something like this. As you can see, that's 256GB... eight times as big as the storage space your switch comes with. That's a lot of games you can fit on there. Realistically you'll likely never run out of space with a card like that (the largest switch game so far is ~27GB, so you'd be able to fit just under TEN of them. And that's the absolute biggest one there is)
The MicroSD card goes into your switch in another slot under another flap, just like your game cartridges do, but smaller.
There are tons and tons of discussions on whether physical or digital is better, I'll let you figure it out for yourself. Personally, I prefer digital by far, because it's way more convenient, but each side has its pros/cons.
Okay, what's next... yearly memberships. Sure.
Annual Membership/Nintendo Switch Online/Online Gaming
So Nintendo offers a yearly membership for its online service. This does not mean you have to pay for the membership to hook your switch up to the internet. Even without the membership, you'll be able to buy/download games and install updates. But Nintendo Switch Online is a specific service Nintendo offers to enhance your online capabilities.
It gives you the following benefits:
-
Play games online with other people (most games will require you to have the membership to play online with other people)
-
Store save data online (more on this later)
-
NES/SNES emulators (more on this later)
-
Exclusive product deals, like being able to buy recreations of the original SNES controllers
-
Probably some other stuff, I don't remember
That's... not a lot. There's not a lot of incentive to purchase the annual membership, and I got by without it for a long time.
That said though, it's also dirt cheap. It's $20 for an entire year.
An entire year! That's super cheap. For me, it's definitely worth it.
But let's look at those benefits a little more closely:
Saving data online.
That's one that won't be important at all... until it is. This will allow you to save your game save data for most games on the internet. This will happen automatically if you have the service. "Game save data" doesn't mean the game itself, but it means your specific progress in the game. So if you play a Mario game and get to level 8 and save, then you come back later and you'll still be on level 8. Saving it online (called saving it to the cloud) means that even if something happens to your switch-- if it breaks and you have to get a new one, or it gets reset, or anything else-- you can download your save game data from the internet and all your game progress will still be there. Also, any specific characters or profiles you create in-game will be saved online (if that game allows online saving).
So it can be pretty useful. You won't think it's important, until you have to reset your switch for some reason and have to delete all your data.
Super Nintendo/Nintendo Entertainment System Emulators
Next benefit offered through the annual subscription is the SNES/NES emulator. This means that you can play a ton of old, retro 80's and 90's nintendo games on your switch. This is a lot of fun! There are a lot of great games on there. IMO, well worth the $20 just for this.
Okay, enough about the annual subscription now. You get the idea.
I think I've probably now covered everything you need to know, as well as everything you should know. There are a few topics I haven't quite covered that you asked about, but they're not terribly important. You can ignore them, and they probably won't impact you anyway. If you do have any questions, please feel free to ask.
So I think that about covers it. I hope you have fun playing with your daughter and everyone enjoys the switch!
Remember, a lot of this stuff seems very complicated if you're new, and seeing my GIANT WALLS OF TEXT maybe made it sound worse, but there are a lot of people out there who are super willing to help you with any problems you have.
Have fun!

Most emulation will work on a mac; /u/TJLook hit the nail on the head. All you need is a controller that you can play with - This Guide on the OpenEMU website says that Wii controllers can be used. Are you able to use Wii Controllers?
Here's a link to a thread here on reddit that describes how simple it is to setup a new controller, and describes the nintendo switch pro controller.
You may be able to use the regular nintendo switch controllers, but I don't know if OpenEMU will be able to "see" them or not.
What kind of macintosh do you own? Does it run the newest version?
And if you can trust a seemingly benevolent stranger on the internet, I'll help you install it without even coming to your house, if you don't feel comfortable or confident doing it yourself. DM me if you're interested.

Also, instead of getting extra Joycons, I would look at getting a Pro Controller or a Magic NS Stick and a Playstation 4 controller. The Joycons are pretty garbage.
Pro Controller: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Pro-Controller/dp/B01NAWKYZ0
(You'll need 2 of these if you get two playstation controllers, but considering that they are kids and they might wear them out, the replacement of a PS4 Controller will be cheaper than getting a Pro Controller. You will also need to buy PS4 controllers)

If you are looking to save a little money, I have had good luck with these: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Controller-Nintendo-Bluetooth-Raspberry/dp/B07WRCHV8S/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2R1H8FQQBAJN&dchild=1&keywords=sn40+pro+controller&qid=1606546905&sprefix=SN40%2Cvideogames%2C516&sr=8-2

Hey there, /u/Linkonu!
Thank you for your submission, but we are removing your post:
Please ask accessory suggestion questions in the daily post. Thanks! You want a Nintendo official pro controller. All of the other controllers are pro controller knockoffs or pro controller-like controllers. The retail is $70, but they're on sale for $60 pretty regularly including right now on Amazon. -Michael

Hi, I'm in my mid 30's and I have rheumatoid arthritis. I have limited grip strength/severe pain in my hands, but predominantly in my right hand. They did think it was CRPS with fibromyalgia for ages, but I showed an elevated Rhumathoid Factor. The 'official' diagnosis has not happened yet due to Covid-19 and being unable to safely go into a specialist (I would have to go around where the Smithfield plant outbreak was and the area never really fully closed and has been open full-stop with little restrictions since early May. So, being in the autoimmune category, as my primary doctor puts it, she does not want to risk me traveling there currently, as the doctor I would see is attached to a hospital that has Covid-19 patients in it.
Whew, that was a long way to say that, I would like to participate. I predominately play Animal Crossing honestly, but have played several other games in the past. I used to be an avid WoW raider that was in the top 50 US guilds in Vanilla and BC. I have a Switch that I like to use primarily. I have several other games for it such as Fire Emblem Heroes, Pokemon S&S, Attack on Titan 2, Mario Odyssey, and a few others that I have been unsuccessful in playing. However, I have been a massive Animal Crossing fan since 2002. I have wanted to play non-stop to forget about this pandemic and to relax. But it has been hard with the pain and frustration of not being able to find a controller that works.
I have tried the following (I will just link and describe why they haven't worked):
https://www.etsy.com/listing/590564483/one-handed-joy-con-grip-leftie-nintendo
It did not work because my hands are too small for this grip. It was very hard to manage and I could not hold the joycons well at all. I tried having my husband screw in a way to put an old Wii strap on the bottom, but it still was very hard to control after several hours of trying.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AJSAAV6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
While this worked with the Switch itself, it did not work with most games that I wanted to play, including Animal Crossing.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T5QKKVP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This was the literal definition of painful.
This with:
Has actually been the best fit so far, but it is still massively painful.
The other thing I tried was taking the left joycon and holding it correctly. But laying the right joycon and laying it flat and playing it with my right hand laying flat and just pressing buttons. However, after prolonged play with that, it hurt massively as well.
Lastly, I tried button remapping to where you would remap everything to the left joycon and put the right one to the side. However, in Animal Crossing there are not enough binds to do all the tasks and it hurts your hand after a while as well. I used these grips with the joycons when playing as well:
So that is pretty much that. I live in the states and would like to take part. Mostly the Switch, but I am willing to try other controllers as well. I have a 360 and PS3. If you have anything for PC I would be available for that as well.
Thanks so much for reaching out and doing this!
