You should get an official Nintendo controller, as the 3rd party ones are often pretty bad. They sell them on Amazon and you can also probably find on Nintendo's website, eBay, etc.

I recently bought a new gamecube ultimate controller from amazon for 64 bucks brand new, it’s a japan import that’s shipped with amazon. When you order just make sure you get a trusty seller and that it comes from the amazon warehouse here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Controller-Super-Smash-Bros-switch/dp/B07HC2F97Q

Let me know if that doesn't work

Why not just get the Japanese import on US amazon for $42?

Idk how y'all keep missing it, I see post's all the time asking about where to get controllers and this is like the 2nd link I always see when I search "GameCube Controller" on amazon.

If you want to avoid the controller lottery, just buy a brand new one off Amazon. Says they'll be getting more in stock in a couple days, so order now. There's also Amazon Japan and PlayAsia which usually have new ones in stock.

If you don't want to spend $60 you can try eBay, but make sure it's a legit Nintendo GC Controller. Generally most have "Nintendo GameCube" written on front (if it has no writing or logo on the front whatsoever, it's a cheap knockoff). All should have the model number DOL-003 on the back, no matter what color. If it has tons of wear on the analog sticks or look grimey, I'd avoid them.

Unfortunately, that's still a licensed controller by Power A. OEM Nintendo gamecube controllers are in short supply and they're $55 on amazon.

I'm not sure why but overall it seems to be easier to short hop in Ultimate. With my Gamecube controller I can do it flawlessly in Ultimate, but in Melee it's harder for be to be consistent even though the jump squat animation time for the faster Melee characters is supposed to be the same as in Ultimate (3 frames). If you're going to get a controller for yourself, I got a few used controllers through Gamestop's website but it seems that they aren't doing delivery on them right now for some reason, you could check to see if any of the stores in your area have one though. The benefit to buying through them is that you can return it if it doesn't work right. Alternatively, I would say you should just buy the Japanese import on Amazon rather than risk something off ebay. This way you know the controller you're getting is brand new and will work properly. I have two imports, one that I've used slightly and works great but I have a hard time letting myself use since my older controllers work fine still, and one that I haven't taken out of the package yet as an emergency backup for the future. If you ever plan on doing IRL events I think the Gamecube controller is definitely the best way to go, sorry that I couldn't help you make the pro controller work.

Like other people have said, the most important thing is that you buy 1st party (Nintendo brand). The smash ones (https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Controller-Super-Smash-Bros-switch/dp/B07HC2F97Q/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=smash+gamecube+controller&qid=1582003161&sr=8-3) are completely fine.

They sell a USB-Gamecube adapter. The Wii U had the same thing. Here's the product, although I'm not sure if they still produce it since it was only like $20 when I bought it a few years ago

I'd try to get an official wired gamecube controller. You can get a japanese import one from Amazon here

Here it is: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HC2F97Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My personal review on this is it really feels like great quality, plastic doesn't bend (like the Hori battlepad). Sticks feel great, left analog being slightly larger than the Hori, although I encountered some snapback but that may be due to my stupid ass being too aggressive with the stick.

This one?

Its fulfilled by Amazon, so if its a fake you would have plenty of recourse for a refund.

But UJC Mart Japan looks to be a legit importer so I wouldnt worry about it.

Here's the official smash ultimate GC controller: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HC2F97Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_9-xVFbG293XTN

Here's an adapter for it (any will do, I think there's an official one? But I'm not sure. Something along the lines of this though): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DJ5KTCZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_2.xVFbS7CMETA

EDIT: Here's the official adapter. It's a lot more expensive and as far as I'm aware it doesn't make any real difference, but you could probobly google that. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HC15QNZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_QbyVFb0PDVAPC

if you want official quality controllers and not the cheap low quality controllers that there are so much of i would recommend purchasing online from one of these links or going to a retro game store

Amazon smash controller: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Controller-Super-Smash-Bros-switch/dp/B07HC2F97Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=gamecube+controller&qid=1607728653&sprefix=gamecube+&sr=8-3

Amazon wavebird (wireless and compatible with original gamecube but a bit expensive and when you choose between the price options make sure it has dongle/receiver included): https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Controller-Super-Smash-Bros-switch/dp/B07HC2F97Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=gamecube+controller&qid=1607728653&sprefix=gamecube+&sr=8-3

Gamestop normal controller (out of stock atm :/): https://www.gamestop.com/video-games/retro-gaming/gamecube/accessories/products/nintendo-gamecube-controller-assortment/10131394.html?condition=Pre-Owned

hope this is helpful

Most (but not all) serious competitors use either an analog gamecube controller with an adapter (get this one or the official Nintendo one), or they use a USB plug-in controller with the gamecube layout like this. A pro controller also works, but the gamecube button layout really is best. Also, don't buy any third party controllers. They don't work as well and are much less durable.

My two biggest tips to start out are to 1) Keep playing and 2) Be patient with yourself. Getting good at this game is HARD, and takes time. It took me a year and a half until I got my main into elite smash for the first time. Sometimes you might feel like you aren't improving or that you'll be forever stuck at your current level, and neither of those things are true. Keep at it.

GameStop has a lot of good options on the terms of which controller you want to use.

Walmart has the cheaper Power A Wired GC controller, which I don't recommend all that much. It's feels cheap and plasticky and not really how a controller is supposed to feel. It can only be found in stores or on Amazon.

You can get the official wired GameCube controller here on Amazon. It costs a pretty penny to get again, but it's incredibly worth it in the long run.

Hope this helps out.
