I’ve used this Vantrue N2 Pro from Amazon for over a year it’s already withstood one wreck. I have it hardwired so it’s always recording and quite simple to do.

I've got a Vantrue N2 w/ the GPS Mount

Bit on the pricier side ($200), but still cheaper than an insurance deductible, plus it records the front, and inside as well.

With the GPS mount ($20?), it gives your location, and speed as well.

FTA:

> Battery: 250mAh

Most likely this component went bad. Let me explain what happened.

  • Vehicle on. Dash cam turns on, starts recording after X number seconds of booting up.

  • You get in accident, turn vehicle off. Dash cam turns off. - This is the problem.

  • You get in vehicle again, turn vehicle on. Dash cam turns on.

What happened?

Your LiPo battery is likely dead, and the dash cam did not finish writing the last file before you turned off your vehicle.

This likely has been happening for a while.

  • LiPo batteries - Crack/Swell/Leak/Otherwise fail to supply the dash cam with power. - Especially in Heat, and Cold. Lasts 1-2 summers tops.

  • Capacitors - Serve the same purpose as batteries, but hold less energy. - Capacitors can still fail, but generally last longer and are more durable - especially in heat and cold.

The way to detect this type of failure is to once every 30-45 days check the recordings of the dash cam, and look for the last file to be corrupted.

Dash cams record in 1-3 minute segments to prevent this type of loss of data/corruption of the file.

As a note:

If it was recorded: /u/techtornado - could likely help recover it.

Thanks! It’s the Vantrue N2 Pro. I got the hardwire kit so it’s on 24/7 as well. https://www.amazon.com/N2-Pro-Infrared-1920x1080P-2560x1440P/dp/B0742J69SQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=vantrue+dash+cam+n2+pro&qid=1604944278&sprefix=vantrue+das&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE0M0VWSjYxUU5WSVgmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAxNTMwNzg4UFQwMlBOM0M4SVImZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDkwNjI3MjJZVEI1N0lXRFdKV08md2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

I’ve got this one and I really like it. I probably wouldn’t have bought this particular one on my own (wife got it for me for christmas) as I was looking at the $100 range.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0742J69SQ/

What’s nice is it has front and back cameras, which is great if you drive for Uber/Lyft. I don’t, but it is able to pick up most of what happens out the back of the window. Not as good as having a camera mounted back there, but better than nothing.

You'll probably want to get a dash cam that's on a pivoting ball joint mount. The one you link to wouldn't rotate in the right way to mount on flat surface pointing forward.

Here's an example of a dash cam, similar to the one you linked to that uses a ball join that can rotate in any direction:

https://www.amazon.com/N2-Pro-Infrared-1920x1080P-2560x1440P/dp/B0742J69SQ/

You could also buy an adapter mount with a ball joint for around $10 for the one you liked to

You may still have problems though, as it might not fully lay flat to point straight ahead

There is no cam that faces interior that only captures the back. But the Vantrue N2 Pro is probably closest to exactly what you're looking for. It's a great deal and I'd snatch it up.

It’s a Vantrue N2 Pro I got a few years ago when I was doing Uber/Lyft. Now I use it just because I paid almost $200 for it and have no reason not to. It does take pretty good video.

I've had a Vantrue N2Pro for about a year and a half.

  • wide angle HD cameras facing the windshield and the cabin
  • Good night vision (including 4 IR LEDs that light up the cabin so you get video of people who make a mess in your car in the dark... so there are no "that was there when I got in" claims)
  • Update the firmware to the latest version before use
  • Get 2 or 3 MicroSD cards and swap them out. They're cheap on Amazon. A 128GB will easily hold an 8 hour shift worth of HD video. A 256GB card will hold a couple days so you don't have to swap it out as often. This way if someone makes a complaint three days after the ride, you haven't overwritten the video yet. Or you could use Handbrake on your computer to transcode the video to a format that takes about 1/40th the space on a hard drive at home from one card while you're out driving with another card in the camera. That way you can store months of video if you're worried about liability.
  • Get a longer USB-B cable (like 10 feet) to run along the headliner of the car and down the A pillar so you don't have the provided cable hanging straight down, or if you're feeling adventurous, buy Vantrue's kit to wire the camera directly to the fuse box so it has power even when the ignition is off and you have one less cable going to your accessory outlet.

I use this one, Dual Dash Cam with Night vision. It’s pretty good, I put a 256 GB card in it and it can record about 8hrs before it starts writing over the oldest recordings (records in 5min chunks).

Unless the cam has night vision, it won’t really capture inside the cabin well if it’s not daytime. I watched some review on YouTube comparing the one with and without night vision, and the NV really makes a difference.

What I also like about this one, is the small footprint and shape. It’s not so obvious and intrusive. I had one with the exact shape before (I think the company got acquired by the new one), and someone broke into my car, and because of the tiny footprint, they did not even notice it behind the rear view mirror (from the driver seat angle).

It goes on sale (lighting deals) often enough; I got mine for $80 off the regular price, and it was on sale again just yesterday for the same.

Sounds like what you're looking for is commonly referred to as "Uber/Taxi Cam" since it records both in front of the car and the interior. There are a few options out there, including the Vantrue N2 Pro which is probably one of the more popular good ones. But to be honest, few people outside of uber/lyfts use these because there isn't a great reason to need to have video of your passengers for most drivers. For most people, they are happy with something like the A119 V3 which has parking mode, turns on/off with the car.

No cam on the market currently sends alerts to your phone. The only one with good cloud capability is the Blackvue DR950s, which comes out to like $500 after all is said and done.

I have invested in some gear that makes things much easier than just relying on the little red lunchbag DD provides. This is the order I upgraded and found useful to me. Your mileage may vary.

  1. The $5 Walmart bag. This should be the first thing you upgrade to, and at $5 it shouldn't be a dealbreaker. It's bigger, sturdier and better insulation than the default DD bag.
  2. A larger catering bag. I use this one a lot. Especially for places that tend to have bigger bags and larger orders like CPK and Red Robin.
  3. Magnet car sign. I do a lot of residential and apartment deliveries, so I've found this keeps me from getting strange looks as I creep through the neighborhood squinting at houses. I'm here to deliver food, not casing your house.
  4. Drink holder. I have this strapped to my front seat with a bungee cord. Much easier to carry multiple drink orders than those flimsy cardboard things.
  5. The stupid car tray. This thing is useful for more than just DD. What I like about it, when combined with the drink holder, it keeps the drinks level. Seems silly, but I don't like having Dr. Pepper spilled on my front seat. The velcro strap is also very handy for securing smaller bags or even drinks if you don't have the drink holder.
  6. A dashcam. I got a good one, but you can find them much cheaper. Good to have extra evidence for security, safety and the inevitable "My food wasn't delivered" complaint.

Now before I get dog-piled by folks saying I blew all this money just for DoorDash driving, chill. I use the catering bags every time I grocery shop to keep my frozen stuff cold and lug into the house in one trip. The $5 bag is great for camping trips. The car tray and dashcam I also use all the time, the latter is just a smart investment/insurance for safety. I've caught street racers, near-miss accidents and the random meth-head yelling at cars stopped at the red light.

And yeah, 100% deductible as a business expense. Save your receipts.
