I take your headphone jack has 4 poles? you'd need an y-cable/adapter, eg: https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

Another guy posted earlier, needed the other type of adapter. Are you needing something like this? Just an Amazon link.

Yup, you just need a 4 pole to dual 3 pole splitter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NDLCGC/
2 points • k_rich10
You need the opposite of that one.

Should have a plug for the headphone jack and the mic jack which would allow him to plug in his earbuds technically to both ports at the same time.

You need to buy a splitter that was made to separate the headset signals. I suspect you got one that duplicates them.
Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NDLCGC/

the green port is usually for headphone jack or speakers. red is for mic. if you still don’t have sound from your mic, i’d also reset any audio settings to see if something was switched off.
also, if your headset won’t work you may need to split it. this is the cable I used to do it for my gaming headset : MillSO Headset Splitter 3.5mm for Computer - 8inch/20CM Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NDLCGC/

Ok so a lot of mobos don't support 4 ringed headphone mic combo your gonna need a splitter like this one. https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

unless the port you are plugging your headphones into is a combo headphone and mic port, you will need a splitter. like this . 99% of computers have a mic port and a headphones port, not a combo, so a splitter is required. this would explain why your headphones work, but not the mic. i am guessing you are plugging them into the headphone output (audio) port that doesnt do mic stuff.

If the headset didn't come with an adapter (the console ones usually) to plug to split into two cables or a USB port then you'll need one of those adapters that split the audio and microphone to two 3.5mm audio jacks which plug into the pink and green port (mic and speaker port).
Basically you'll need something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-MillSO-Female-Compatible-Headset/dp/B071NDLCGC/

If it only has one plug and you have a desktop there's a good chance the port you're using only does audio out, not microphone in. So you'll need to get a splitter that can send the mic to one plug and the audio to another.

This style.

If you want to use your headset's microphone with your PC, you'll have to get a headphone splitter. The type of splitter/adapter is one female 4pin (TRRS) to 2x male 3pin (TRS) plugs.
The way you plugged it your headset into the mic port resulted in you using your headset's speakers as a microphone. Due to similarities between speakers and microphones, you can actually use speakers as microphones, but as you heard, it's very quiet and the quality of the sound isn't great.

For your headset, you'll need an adapter like this, if I'm understanding you correctly:

Do the USB ports recognize other devices just fine? Are you going to the back of the MOBO or on the case?

Yes, you'd need something to split it into different plugs. https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

Does your Bose headset have the iPhone cable? That cable doesn't work with anything other than Apple devices. I have a QC25 that I use when travelling. I had to order the Android compatible cable so it'd work with standard headset jacks. You also need a special splitter for headsets like this one. Desktop PCs typically need that special splitter, laptops can change the jack's functions in software.

So your headphones have a built in microphone, and have only one cable coming out of them? If so, you need a splitter like this. Why? Because the the standard for mobile devices is to have a single 3.5mm port with four contacts, left channel, right channel, ground, and microphone. While the standard for computer audio is to have separate 3.5mm jacks for both.
1 points • travellingmonk
Yes, here's a similar one on Amazon. Green goes into the microphone jack, red goes into the headphone jack, and you plug your headphones into the adapter.

There headphone jack is not a headphone/mic combo jack. You needa splitter adapter in order to use a smartphone headset. Example: https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC // Tom

unless your audio card is terrible, what you need is a 3.5 mic in and 3.5 line out to 3.5 trrs. a good one on amazon is this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NDLCGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_9RCFFbN49E99H

>Sound system is MSI, though i don't really know what that means or if it has any impact on this.
Not sure what you mean. MSI is a motherboard manufacturer. Motherboards normally have an output for the headphones and a separate input for the mic.
The wired headphones have a single plug, or does it have two plugs one for the phones and a second for the mic?
You might need this if your headphones & mic have a single plug.

If it comes with a USB adaptor in the box (it should), just use that. Then your mic will work.
Otherwise, get one of these headset splitters:

Most likely the issue is that the port on your computer is set up to only accept speaker input, and there's a separate port for microphone input. Conversely I bet if you plug it into your phone it works totally fine, since that Port was made to do both at the same time. If you get a 3.5 millimeter splitter, that should correct the issue. Here's what I found on Amazon that should fix it:

Do your headphones only have one 3.5mm plug? if yes you have to split it, one for the mic the other for audio. A splitter looks something like this, and when you plug it on the back of your PC, the mic jack goes to the pink 3.5mm and the audio jack goes to the green one.

I have this headset. The mic doesn't work because it's not actually connected when you plug in that way.
You need to use a 4-pole splitter to do what you want to do. Like this: 4 pole splitter
You will likely have to order one (Amazon, target, ebay, etc.). I've never seen these in the stores anywhere.

So, you mentioned being willing to spend about 125$ for the speaker upgrades (50$ per speaker and 25$~35$ for the crossovers), and that you couldn't afford the stuff to measure them. But here, grab this: https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-iMM-6-Calibrated-Measurement/dp/B00ADR2B84/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=imm6&qid=1582398078&sr=8-1
and this: https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=130FF9J7YN8UR&keywords=headphone+mic+splitter&qid=1582398111&sprefix=headphone+mic+%2Caps%2C254&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&smid=A1VJX9TVQ0U51X&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzN0RRQVZUWjg1NEtXJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjM2ODMxM0hZMlJMNERGQkFWVSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTA4NTM3MjlZTlNSUTNYNVYxWSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
And then you could use REW for free to measure if you've got any kind of computer at all.
That leaves more then enough cash to grab a minidsp kit say, and while that will only let you run eq assuming you've got a conventional stereo amp hooked to them, that'll be a lot to play with. It would also let you eventually add a second amp and actively crossover the subs to the mids/tweets, which should make a pretty big difference right off the bat.
I did effectively that with a set of Hitachis, and what I ended up discovering the mids and tweets were so bad that an upgrade there was really the better move. Doing so with nothing but some old car speakers and then crossing the subs using an AVR made them actually sound decent. Had I gone straight to the mini off the bat, which I now have, the difference would've been more immediate.

If your headphones have a detachable cable you can often get an inline microphone built into a replacement cable. These are designed for cell phone use. This is the one I use for my Sennheiser's. Microphone quality is good enough for comms and I use it for conference calls. It doesn't have any microphone compression so it will pick up any noise in the room but makes your voice sound more natural. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MX4D9H5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You might need a splitter cable to split the microphone output with a system that has separate ports for audio and mic. There are different standards so be sure to get the correct version. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071NDLCGC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Does using a 3.5 mm splitter degrade sound quality or cancels my mic?
HD598CS with a GSX 1200 for virtual 7.1 for gaming and etc.
The HD598CS come with a 3.5mm cable with mic.
Trouble is the GSX 1200 expects a separate mic input.
If I'm using a 3.5 mm splitter, will I be degrading the virtual 7.1 or making the GSX 1200 not recognise my mic?
I have this splitter: https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

That's a good idea - might be able to accomplish the same thing with an audio splitter
- then obviously NOT connecting the jack for the mic to anything. This might trick the headset into thinking the external headphones don't have a mic, and revert to Onboard. I think I have one at home and will try and remember to try it tonight.

The splitter is the issue. The headset jack you are using is TRRS (tip ring ring sleeve) and the splitter is just turning TRS into 2 x TRS. You need an adapter cable to change TRRS into two TRS 0- one each for mic and headphone. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-3-5mm-Jack-Adapter-CTIA/dp/B071NDLCGC?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_3
If you are already using such a cable (more of an adapter than splitter) then we still have a problem.

Alright you will need something like this to connect it into the mainboard. The ports on your mainboard should also be colour coded or have at least a similar print on them:

In that case you need a splitter. They are really cheap and easy to get on amazon.

I have multiple headsets. I got this one for my non-gaming headset to work on my pc.

This is an example, I have not tried this specific adapter, but any "Female to 2 Male" should work
