Okay, question, what is better, Bluetooth or wireless adapter? I already have a bunch of Xbox one controllers, but will be building a gaming computer soon. Should I just buy the adapter or just use the inbuilt Bluetooth?
Edit: so consensus is adapter is better. Follow up question,
Is the adapter sold by itself still, like I said I have several (6+1 elite 2) controllers, and would just need the adapter.
Edit 2: found the adapter for $25. Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KZqdEb2D74XVW

I use an xbox one controller on some PC games and just use the official xbox dongle and it works flawlessly. https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU

Microsoft Xbox adapter for win 10 and a pi Zero?
Hey all, setting up RP and was looking for a way to use my old Xbox 360 controllers. I came across this for $25:
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU
Will it work, or should I go with the larger generic usb adapter? For the cost of the genuine Microsoft one, I'd rather just buy a new Xbox One controller. . .
Thanks

Yeah I think it's funny how people still argue couch gaming as being a console plus. You have been able to plug a computer into a TV since forever. Steam Big Picture was literally designed to be a couch gaming experience on PC...almost ten years ago.
Also if you want to even do pretty serious keyboard and mouse gaming there's things called lapboards: https://www.ign.com/articles/best-lapboards-for-gaming
For just media highly recommend this keyboard by the way: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014EUQOGK
For controller just get an Xbox One controller adapter and any Xbox One controller, it works basically natively in Windows no special configuration and would say most big PC games support controller (unless they absolutely can't): https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/
You can even plug a headset into the Xbox One controller and it works just fine for chat and audio.
Someone really needs to make a "couch gaming PC bundle" or advertise this more. People are always so shocked when they come to my house and see my setup. It was incredibly simple to set up and wow it's just like such a great experience.

Why the fuck did I get downvoted. I'm talking about this https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU
Much more reliable than Bluetooth. People are stupid

If you can’t figure out Bluetooth, these work really well: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU
I’ve had mine for a few years and never have any connection issues.

If you want spend extra money, buy the dongle .
If not your only option is to use a cable

You need one of these: -
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/
You can also get a controller and adapter together as a bundle, but if you buy one of those, make sure it comes with the latest version of the controller, not an older version.
The controller will also work via Bluetooth, so if your PC has that built in, you don't need to use an adapter at all.

I didn't pay $40 for mine though, thanks pandemic for making electronics impossible to find unless it's from shady resellers.

AFAIK, XBone drumsets released before Xbox controllers got Bluetooth. There is a Wireless adapter for the PC released by Microsoft, let me see if i can find it.
Edit: Here ya go.

Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_VK3lEbRKDRCHV
This pretty much works with almost any Xbox one controllers

Yes that's the one. There is also a newer smaller version as well (about half the size) that has an easier to access pairing button

But either one is fine, I have tested xow with both

The xbox console will always use wifi direct by default, for other platforms you need the special dongle.
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU
It works on windows for sure, but I don't know if it will work on the shield tv, or any android/linux systems.
-edit- 8bitdo also offer some really great wifi-direct controllers/receivers that work on basically everything

No problem at all! Keep in mind you can use your Xbox controllers on PC as well (though I'm sure you knew that). Be sure to buy an xbox wireless adapter for windows. Though you can also connect them via USB.
Anyway, welcome to PCMR!

You could also give this a try.
My experience with BT on the xb1 controller hasn't been great, tbh.

I have to do the delete and re-pair stuff with an Xbone controller on an Android phone when the controller shuts off too. It acts like it's paired when turning it back on, but just stops responding to anything until being forgotten and re-paired.
I heard lots of bad stuff about bluetooth and Xbone controllers in Windows in various places, so I decided to go with the newer slim version of the Xbox Win10 adapter. It was a few bucks off for Prime members when I grabbed it. It's worked as seamlessly as being wired; just hold the guide button to turn the controller on and it connects to it in a second. Haven't had to pair it again since I first got it. Also, I think it's supposed to have less lag than bluetooth since it uses wifi direct and you can connect multiple controllers at once to it.

You can pick up any bluetooth 4.0 (or higher) adapter and it will work. For the best results the official xbox one wireless adapter is recommended but it's not essential.

Microsoft sells a USB adapter to wirelessly connect your controller to your PC. I have it and it works great, no problems whatsoever.

This is an example of the dongle: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=xbox+one+dongle+for+pc&qid=1593182363&sprefix=Xbox+one+dongle&sr=8-5
Yes, it is the same thing as an adapter, but this is specifically for Xbox One controllers.
The advantages of this over the Bluetooth adapter is that it can handle up to 8 Xbox one controllers. The disadvantage is that it cannot handle other Bluetooth devices.
If you only need to use one controller, the Bluetooth adapter may be a better buy since it can be used for all kinds of devices.

Are you talking about a wireless adapter like this?
Do you know if Xbox controllers can still work while charging off a separate power source?

Buy the official Xbox controller adapter for pc.. the easiest way to connect an Xbox controller, it just works like it would on console man. Can’t go wrong. Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10

Off the top of my head, your choices are the Logitech F710 -- I personally own the the F310, so I can't comment on performance at that distance -- or using an X-Box controller with the Wireless Adapter USB dongle, although I don't know whether that would work with the Shield or obstructed at that distrance.

Yes. Steam VR will recongnize the xbox controller. I used this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZB7W4QU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Windows also has a built in xbox controller application that should make it recogonizable if you are not using steam. I only played subnautica through steam so cant verify the controller 100% if you play it some other way. In theory you should be able to though.
I used one of these usb extenders so I could sit it up on my desk for better line of sight to my play area https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7SA21U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
